Two days after the incident with Hu and still Sumi could feel the unrest within the Shanghai mafia. It put her on edge, while always watching Enishi's back. He felt it too, however wasn't that concerned. If someone could survive taking him on, then that person deserved to be the new boss. Everyday, both he and his wife wore their metal plated vests, mostly as a precaution. There were many sectors that the mafia had their hands in. During a walk through of the prostitution alley, Lei came to greet them. Sumi noticed he was visibly upset.
"Lei, what's wrong?"
"My sister, she's really sick."
"Show me."
Because his wife took interest, Enishi also went with the boy. The sister seemed so fragile and she had a bad fever. Enishi said, "bring her to the house. Go get Sumi's horse." The boy obeyed and quickly brought the white mare down the alley, holding the horse steady. Enishi waited until Sumi had mounted and then handed her the little girl. "I'll send a doctor to the house, with Lei."
Sumi cantered off, carefully holding the sick child. On arrival back at the house, the doorman handled the horse, while she took the little girl inside. She put the girl on a daybed and had Feng bring cold water and a cloth, to wipe the child's head. The doorman brought Lei and the doctor.
"Feng, stay with the kids and help the doctor, I need to get back to the port."
"Yes ma'am."
"Oh and set Lei and his sister up to stay in one of the guest rooms. They'll be living here for a while, I'll discuss it with Enishi when I see him." Sumi didn't wait to see if her orders were obeyed.
Riding back to the alley she'd last seen Enishi, Sumi came to the street with the brothels. Seeing the men and women of these establishments brought back bad memories and she was on edge. The mare she rode pranced and when a man suddenly darted in front of her, the horse reared. Sumi kept her seat and put a calming hand on the neck of her horse.
"I know Pearl, I feel the same way." She saw one of Enishi's men and called to him, "do you know where he is?"
"The Boss is talking to Daiyu, in that one," he pointed to the brothel.
"Can I tie my horse here?" Sumi asked.
"If it would please you, I can hold on to her."
"Thanks... what's your name?"
"Pan Chang."
She gave him a nod and then made her way into the brothel. The air inside was heavy with smoke and perfume. The other scent was opium and it made her feel sick. It was her nature to stick to the shadows and conceal her presence, so she went unnoticed as Sumi sought out Enishi. From gossiping whispers, she learned that he was in the office of the Madam. Finding the room, she entered and froze. A beautiful woman served Enishi wine and then sat down on his lap, making sure he got a good eyeful of her chest. He seemed to be ignoring her, reading a rolled up parchment. The woman saw his new wife in a mirror and smirked devilishly, then kissed him.
Sumi couldn't breath, her chest hurt like it had been stabbed with a red hot knife, a cold chill travelled the length of her body all in a few seconds. A million thoughts ran through her head and one became anchored; she had to escape the pain. Without a word, she ran out of the brothel and leaped on to her horse, startling Pan Chang. He let go and she spun the animal and took off. Sumi had to get out of the city. Tears blinded her and so she rode, urging the mare faster and faster. The mare called to Black Devil repeatedly, hearing his screamed reply. Chaos was left in her wake, as horses from carriages spooked, carts were overturned and people yelled.
Because of her sudden departure, Sumi didn't see Enishi dump the woman on her ass. When Pan Chang came to tell him about Sumi leaving in a rush, Enishi lost his temper. His hand latched onto Daiyu's neck and he squeezed until she became panicked. "If I can't find my wife, I'll break your neck."
"I'm sorry, I didn't see her there," Daiyu lied struggling to get free.
Enishi turned to Pan Chang, "take her, I'll deal with this later." He found his horse fighting its bridle rope. Enish pursued his wife on his own horse, calling to it for more speed. "Black Devil find her!"
He saw the people trying to sort through the damage from what Sumi and her horse had caused. Shanghai's citizens automatically pointed in the direction she had gone. The stallion had a big stride and even though Enishi didn't know it, they were gaining on the fleeing pair. Sumi seemed to be riding northwest, which would mean she'd come to the Huangpu River eventually and it was too wide to cross without a boat. His horse suddenly shifted to the left and Enishi knew he'd smelled the mare. He gave the stallion free rein and it ran ever faster, releasing a shrill call. Its ears pricked sharply forward as it picked up the mare's reply. It wasn't long before Enishi could see the white horse running ahead of them. He rode up alongside Sumi and took hold of the mare's bridle, pulling it to a stop. Only his superior skills, kept him from being stabbed by Sumi's curved dagger. Standing in a crouch on the back of his horse, he got behind her and put Sumi in a choke hold. The horses stopped automatically, happy to see each other. Enishi pulled his angry wife from her saddle on to the ground. He pinned her and she tried to bite and head-butt him. She was being very vicious, but he was surprisingly calm.
"Take your anger out on Daiyu."
"I'll kill her!" Sumi snarled, while tears poured from her eyes.
Enishi captured her lower lip between his teeth, staring into Sumi's eyes, waiting for the rationality to return. Eventually she stopped struggling against his hold and he licked the lip, before giving her a kiss. They'd gathered a crowd. He released her and she sprang to her feet, both blades in her hands, circling him. A few women in the crowd screamed, when Sumi tried to cut Enishi. Police came to break up their fight, but one look at who was causing the commotion and they backed away, taking the crowd with them.
"Pearl!" Sumi called to her horse.
But Enishi used the stallion to prevent the mare from getting to Sumi. With a voice devoid of warmth and patience, he said, "come home."
He got on his horse and turned to head back, completely ignoring his wife. If she really wanted to leave, he wouldn't stop her again. The stallion didn't fight him, which meant the mare was following, as expected. Satisfied, Enishi urged Black Devil into a trot and then canter. He looked around, impressed at how far they had come. It was sunset when they finally rode through the gates and dismounted at the front of the house. Their horses were taken away immediately to be cooled down, groomed and eventually fed. Feng and Pan Chang were with the doorman, to give their reports.
Sumi swore in Japanese, when she realized in her flight, the children had been forgotten. Switching to Chinese she asked, "Feng how is Lei and his sister?"
"Both are asleep in the guest room as you instructed. The boy remained vigilant by his sister's side, caring for her. Doc said she's got a fever, but mostly it's due to malnutrition and dehydration. He left some medicine."
"Take me to them please," Sumi ordered politely.
As Feng lead her up the stairs, she heard Pan Chang give his report. "I tied her up and dumped Daiyu in the stable."
"Sumi?" Enishi asked.
"I'll deal with you two after I see the children."
Enishi smirked. "Bring her here."
Pan Chang offered, "Lady Killer, a maid of the brothel is waiting to give her account of what happened. Should I have her brought here too?"
"Yes, thank you Pan Chang."
Enishi raised an eyebrow at the man, but didn't say anything and dismissed him with a head movement. His wife kept making friends with his men, it was amusing how easily she made allies.

Sumi had just finished listening to the woman's report of her husband's behaviour. "So she saw me. Understood." The anger had not yet left her, but she paid the woman and Pan Chang for their assistance. To Enishi she asked, "do you need Daiyu alive?"
"Your choice." He sat in a chair, with his feet up on a coffee table. His arms were crossed within his sleeves, but his eyes were almost laughing.
"I should cut her throat," Sumi grumbled. "Pan Chang wait."
"Ma'am?"
"Has Bolin returned yet?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Have him come here immediately please." Sumi gave a challenging look to Enishi, but he had his eyes closed.
Pan Chang left quickly, to carry out her request. He told anyone who asked, that it was the Boss's wife who was in a killing mood. He found Bolin and filled him in on what he knew. Enishi's enforcer had been dealing with the aftermath of Hu's death and knew he'd have to be careful around his Boss and even more so with the volatile wife. Pan Chang went with Bolin to the house, but stayed outside.
"Ma'am, Bolin has arrived."
"Send him in."
Bolin glanced at Enishi, but his Boss looked like he was sleeping. He knew that wasn't the case, but turned his focus on Sumi.
"Where's the next shipment of Opium going?" She asked.
"Japan."
"Tokyo?"
"Yes."
"Take this woman and tell Jiro she's a gift from me, use and discard her as he sees fit." Before he could answer, Sumi put a blade to Daiyu's throat. "If you even think about my husband, I'll find you and rip out your jugular with my teeth." She snapped her teeth and smiled putting the light of insanity in her eyes.
Enishi opened his own eyes and smirked, "she did that to a guy, when I first met her. Painted the world red."
Even Bolin was unsettled from learning that fact. The Boss had married a woman as equally lethal and unstable as himself. Bolin bowed deeply to Sumi, careful to show the utmost respect.
"Also Pan Chang has been very helpful today, he seems loyal. Assign him something on this estate." Sumi stood and came towards Enishi. She tried to kick the chair out from under him, but he had felt her coming and leaped out of it, while laughing at her.
"Report when that's been handled," Enishi told Bolin. "Now get out."
Feng returned to the kitchen hastily. Bolin took the woman and with the doorman, leaving just as fast. Bolin and the doorman exchanged worried looks with each other, when they heard something shatter behind the closed door.
