Kaiya POV
"Oh, you're preparing breakfast today?" Shuichi asked as he came downstairs.
I nodded while getting out some eggs. "I'm trying out Hakase's new invention, the 'Automatic Ham and Egg Maker.'"
"Didn't the professor distribute that invention to the neighbors as well?" Shuichi recalled as he made some coffee.
"I think so. Now let's see how this thing works." I read over the manual and pushed some buttons. Soon enough a pleasant aroma filled the kitchen. I was amazed at how fast the machine cracked the eggs! Within moments, however, the machine started shaking violently. Bam! It suddenly exploded. Shuichi quickly opened all the windows to disperse the smoke.
"So much for breakfast." he sighed.
"Hakase!" I called Agasa while wiping soot off my face.
"Kaiya-chan, you're calling me about the 'Automatic Ham and Egg Maker' right?" he replied over the phone. He sounded in a rush. "It seems like the other machines exploded as well!"
**********
(in the afternoon)
"What? There's a defect in the invention?" I asked Hakase. I inspected the broken pieces of the machine.
"Yeah and I have received a lot of complaints about the product." Agasa said sheepishly. "But I still haven't figured out what's wrong."
"Maybe the Detective Boys can help you. They are pretty resourceful." I suggested.
Agasa shook his head. "They are out fishing. Ah that's right! I was supposed to pick them up from fishing later!"
"Jeez Hakase! How could you forget something so important like that!" I scolded him.
"Subaru-kun do you mind picking them up? It seems like it's taking longer than expected to fix." Agasa asked.
"No problem." Subaru said.
********
"I see them on the fishing dock!" I pointed out. Shuichi and I were on a ship.
"Professor!" the detective boys waved and called to us. "Professor...?" they trailed off when they saw us. Subaru and I explained what happened to Agasa's invention.
"Alright resume your chat after boarding the ship. Otherwise we'll be caught out here when the sun sets." a fisherman (Iwao) said.
"Let's get on the ship." I told the detective boys and started helping them board the ship.
"Come on, you guys need to get on as well." the other fisherman (Futoshi) said to Conan and Haibara.
"Ai-chan!" Ayumi exclaimed as Haibara suddenly tripped over.
"We can't have that. Keep an eye out." Subaru caught Haibara before she fell in the water.
"Y-yeah." Haibara stuttered and stared at Subaru.
*********
"We caught so many, but we won't get to eat them!" Ayumi peered into her bucket of fish.
"The professor is busy after all." Mitsuhiko sighed.
"Well then, how about I prepare it for you?" Subaru offered.
"You can cook?" Genta asked in surprise.
"Well just a little bit. I'm not up there with the professional chefs, but I can manage home dishes. If the professor would let me borrow his kitchen, then I'll treat you guys to it." Subaru told them.
"I'll help too! Maybe we can grill the fish. Or make some tempura." I started to think of ideas.
"I want eel over rice!" Genta insisted.
********
"Hey guys! Look at this pretty sunset!" Iwao motioned. The view was certainly breathtaking.
"Wow!" Mitsuhiko exclaimed as he and the other kids got a closer look.
"It's so pretty!" Genta agreed.
"What's the pointy thing coming from the surface of the water?" Ayumi suddenly asked.
"That's Ikkaku Rock. Long ago, there was a sea dragon with a horn on its head, which is why it was known as the Ikkaku Dragon. The dragon grew angry when the fisherman caught its young, so it placed its horn above the water to protect its home, or so the legend goes." Iwao said. "Fishermen only view the rock from a distance since it is said that any ship that approaches it sinks. Do you guys want to take a look at it?"
"But won't our ship sink?" Mitsuhiko said.
"It will be fine!" Iwao chuckled. "They also say that kids who visit the rock will develop into perfect swimmers. The dragon loves kids."
"Then let's go!" the detective boys shouted eagerly.
********
"It's huge!" I said as we approached the rock and everyone else agreed as well.
"Hey what are you guys doing? That's Ikkaku Rock!" a man in a nearby ship shouted.
"It's fine! They are kids anyways." another person replied.
"I wonder what that was about." Ayumi said as the boat left.
"Who are they?" Genta asked.
"They started diving here recently. They are friends with some company president's daughter I think. Anyways, Ikkaku Rock is also known as the children's rock, so enjoy it to your heart's content."
********
"Alright! Smile!" I told the detective boys as they posed for a picture.
"Could I borrow that for a moment?" Subaru suddenly asked and I handed him my phone. He held the phone and walked closer to the detective boys before pausing in front of Haibara. "There's something written on the rock behind you."
"Mackerel, carp, sea bream, flounder?" Conan read off the letters.
"There's something sticking out of the rocks here." I noticed. It was a pink fin. I pulled it out from the rocks. Conan ran to the other side of the rock and we followed him to find a woman laying on the floor.
"What happened to her?" Ayumi asked.
"Is she sleeping?" Genta asked.
Conan felt the woman's pulse and shook his head. "No, she's dead."
I immediately called the police while Subaru found the other fin and pulled it out. Soon enough, Inspector Jugo Yokomizo arrived and we explained the case to him. Conan also figured out that the body belonged to Hikari, the daughter of a company head.
"Lady Hikari!" we heard a voice call as a ship approached us.
"What's going on?" another voice said.
**********
"We were on a diving trip together when she got separated from us. We searched for her, and she sent me a text saying 'Take care of the rest.'" one of the men (Shuhei) explained.
"And you stopped there without any confirmation?" Jugo asked.
"We would have looked for her sooner, but a similar event happened before." another man continued the story. "We thought she was lost and called a search party, but it turns out she was just picked up by a cruiser and stayed with them that night."
"I didn't hear anything about a search party." Jugo thought.
"She was mad at us for calling a search party, so we didn't call one this time." another man (Rokusuke) continued the story.
"But after three days we decided to go look for her." the third man (Yasuji) said. "We never thought we'd find her on Ikkaku Rock."
"But mister," Conan piped up "when you go diving, don't you usually go with three or more people?"
"She always liked to go off on her own." Yasuji replied. "Because of that habit she got carried away by a current last time. And Yoshirou too."
"Stop! Don't mention Yoshirou!" Shuhei interrupted.
"Yoshirou?" Jugo asked.
Afterwards, Jugo questioned why Yasuji had an eyepatch. Yasuji replied that he got into a fight with Shuhei when he suggested that the woman might have been picked up by another cruiser again. Ryosuke also explained that he was wearing a mask since he had a slight cold.
"And what's with the bandage?" Jugo asked Shuhei. "Did you get injured?"
"Oh this? Acne. I popped it while at an internet cafe last night. I was searching for blogs to see if anyone had picked her up on their boat." he replied.
"Say misters." Ayumi interrupted. "Could you tell us your favorite fish?"
"What a strange question to ask." Jugo said.
"It isn't strange!" Mitsuhiko retorted. "We found the names of fish carved into the rock."
"It might be the favorite dishes of the culprit." Genta insisted.
"The point they are aiming for isn't a bad one. Oftentimes innocence unbound by common sense has been instrumental in wading through pieces of a puzzle. In addition, haven't the hints given by that boy been helpful in solving many cases?" Subaru looked at Conan.
"That's true...what are your favorite dishes?" Jugo asked the three men.
"The three of us practically love all fish." Ryosuke responded.
"And we don't dislike any either." Shuhei replied. Then he looked at his watch and grumbled. "How much longer must we stay here?"
"Mister, that watch you're wearing..." Conan approached Shuhei.
"Yeah. Lady Hikari had them custom made for us. She thought we should have a connection as a diving team, and she named us the Akamine Angelfish Club." Shuhei replied.
*******
We all thought hard, trying to figure out the meaning of the words. Conan suddenly smirked and realized who the culprit was.
"We should continue the conversation down at the station." Jugo insisted.
"Wait just a little longer!" I said. "If we leave now, then the evidence will be destroyed." The clue was in the names of the fishes carved in the rock. Conan explained how the woman's watch had "fish" removed.
"So in other words if you remove "fish" from the names carved on the rocks..." Haibara wondered. The detective boys tried different combinations with the words and Iwao suggested that it might be the kanji that was removed.
"And if you remove the kanji for fish from mackerel, carp, sea bream, flounder, you get Aosato (as in Shuhei Aosato)." Conan summarized.
*******
"Idiots!" Shuhei exclaimed. "Are you suggesting that I'm the culprit?"
"It's a little too convenient how that is spelled out." Jugo noted.
"If I were the criminal, then why didn't she just write my name?" Shuhei argued back.
"Because she thought you might have come back to erase it." I explained.
"I also knew the other reason you came. You severed her regulator with a knife, forcing her to surface at Ikkaku Rock. Under the pretense you would get help, you left her there to die since she couldn't swim and no one would come near Ikkaku Rock. It was easy for you to switch the regulators and make it back by sealing it with tape." Conan said.
"In addition, you said you were at an internet cafe last night. The mouses are usually on the right side, so by that logic, the acne burst must have been on the left side." Subaru approached Shuhei. Oh I see what he was getting at.
"Judging from the position of the regulator, it must have come off there right?" Conan said.
"If you would excuse me." I went up to Shuhei and removed the bandage. There was a lipstick stain there!
"I see, you move your bandage up there to conceal it." Jugo said in realization.
"But still, even beginners know not to wear lipstick while diving." Iwao looked at Hikari's body.
"It was on purpose. I put on her regulator by accident once and got lipstick all over. She thought it was funny and felt the need to wear lipstick when diving." Yasuji explained.
Then Shuhei revealed that his motive for killing Hikari was because when both she and Yoshirou were trapped in a current, she had left Yoshirou to die. She was only concerned about getting back onto the boat.
*********
"Then I'll leave you guys at Ikkaku Rock as well!" Shuhei smirked.
"Shuhei!" Ryosuke shouted as Shuhei suddenly grabbed me and held a knife to my throat.
"Kaiya-neechan!" the detective boys cried.
"I'll use her to escape!" Shuhei declared.
"Don't act so rash!" I told Shuhei.
"Cop! Tell your colleagues to leave and head back." Shuhei ordered Jugo and pressed the knife closer to me.
"And you! Cut the ropes of the boat." he told Iwao. "When the fisherman's boat disappears, I'll take her and make my escape."
Subaru made eye contact with me, signaling me not to move. "0.12%. That's the probability an offender's flight will end in success." Subaru walked towards us. "Of those that fall under the influence of the devil, many grow tired of leading a false life and living in fear. The amount that does successfully escape amounts to almost zero. Are you prepared to -"
"Shut up!" Shuhei interrupted and brandished his knife. In a flash, Subaru knocked the knife out of Shuhei's hands.
"Wow! So cool!" the detective boys cried.
"How dare you do that to me!" I tripped Shuhei when he tried to escape. Hmph.
"How about we make our escape to the police station buddy?" Jugo grabbed Shuhei by the collar.
"Thanks for earlier." I told Subaru.
"But is it true? That the probability is 0.12%?" Conan asked Subaru.
"It was random. I thought it was best to provoke him in order to get the knife and free Kaiya." Subaru replied.
"I could have handled him." I pouted.
"Yes, but the other kids could have been in danger if the situation got out of hand." Subaru explained. "It just happened that you were the one closest to him at that time, so he took you hostage."
***********
"Seconds please!" Genta held out his bowl.
"Genta-kun! I think you ate too much!" Ayumi exclaimed and we all sweatdropped.
"But Subaru-san's cooking is so good!" Genta replied, taking another bite of fish. It was actually surprisingly good.
"Subaru-san, can we try more of your dishes sometime please?" Mitsuhiko asked.
"Hey hey what about my dishes?" Agasa asked.
"We like Subaru-san's food more." the detective boys chorused. Agasa slumped in defeat.
"Now now Hakase, don't look so depressed." I patted his shoulder. "At least you fixed your 'Automatic Ham and Egg Maker'."
"In this case, would you like to try some of my curry next time?" Subaru asked the detective boys.
"Yes!" they nodded their heads.
I facepalmed. He's making curry again?
