Kaiya POV
"Alright, class is dismissed!" our sensei said. "Make sure to research a future career you are interested in and write a report on it."
"What are you going to write about?" Ran asked.
"I want to be a fashionista or model!" Sonoko nodded.
"A detective!" Masumi grinned.
"I don't know yet..." I admitted. "What about you Ran?"
"I'm not sure either... but I could always ask my dad about his detective job if I can't think of anything else." Ran replied.
Out of the corner of the eye I saw a familiar man outside the school gates so I waved goodbye to Ran and the others.
*************
"Kaiya Matsuki?" a man approached me as I exited the school gates.
"Agent John! It's quite a surprise to see you here. Is something happening?" I asked as we got into the car, glad to get out of the rainy weather.
"Akai-san told me to bring you to one of the FBI hideouts. The Organization has been active lately so it will be safer there." John said while driving.
"Is that so..." I frowned. Is that why Shuichi has been so busy lately? Getting out of the car, I suddenly paled as I saw a red dot on John's forehead. It was from a sniper! I gasped to see Chianti on the roof. "Duck!" I shouted.
The bullet grazed his shoulder, causing John to grab his arm in pain. I screamed as the car swerved and he lost control of the vehicle. I quickly pulled him out of the car in time.
"We need to get inside the building quickly!" I shouted.
***************
Leaning him against my shoulder, we quickly ducked into an alleyway and took another route inside the building.
"Let us in!" I banged on the back door. "Agent John needs medical attention."
"Another one of our hideouts has been compromised." the agents explained as John was given first aid.
"We can't stay here for long. The Organization will enter the building and kill all of us." one agent said as we hid from the storm of bullets from the Organization trying to break the entrance. We tried barricading the door but it wasn't helping much. Peeking out of one of the windows I could see Gin outside.
"I know a safe place to hide for now." I said. The Kudo Residence... "But first we need an escape plan. We need to shoot down the power lines in the front of the building and escape through the back."
With the rainy weather and power lines, the Organization will leave the hideout alone...
I covered my ears as the power lines fell and we retreated.
***************
"Will Agent John be alright?" I asked Shuichi as I made it back to the Kudo Residence. James, Jodie, and Camel were there as well.
"He's being taken to the hospital." Shuichi reassured me. "You saved his life in time."
I sighed in relief.
"But we have to evacuate the other FBI agents from the remaining hotel base as our meeting locations have been compromised." Jodie said, her voice laced with concern. "We've only been using a code to communicate." she explained, showing me a picture on her phone.
"There's no other safe place besides here though..." I trailed off.
"The FBI can stay here until another safe house is found." Yusaku told Shuichi.
"Yu-chan we need to prepare the house then." Yukiko said she left with Yusaku to purchase groceries.
"Akai-san, won't it be too obvious if more FBI agents enter this house?" Camel asked.
"I-I can bring them here through the back door again." I piped up. "It's too dangerous now for you guys to show your faces now anyways."
Jodie, Camel, and Shuichi exchanged looks before Shuichi nodded. "I'm counting on you then."
I blinked as I felt a cap placed on my head. It was Shuichi's!
"Wear this to disguise yourself." Shuichi said.
I nodded and headed out the door, trying to blend into the crowd on the streets.
************
I looked both ways from the streets before I motioned for the agents to follow me into the bushes that led to the back door of the Kudo Residence. The agents then congregated in the study for an emergency meeting.
"Conan-kun?" I turned around when I heard the door open.
"Oh cool-kid!" Jodie greeted him.
"Are all these people FBI agents?" Conan asked.
"Yes everything started three days ago when we lost contact with one of our agents Aaron." Jodie replied. "Since then, the Organization has ambushed our meeting places in the past two days. We used a code to exchange rendezvous points, so we suspect that Aaron must have revealed how to decipher the code. We decided to take temporary refuge here until we found another hotel base."
"I see." Conan replied. "Then where's Yusaku-san and Yukiko-san?"
"They went to get groceries, since it would be too conspicuous to order take out for this many people." I told him.
"But did Agent Aaron really reveal how to decipher the code?" Conan pointed out.
Shuichi shook his head. "No, the probability of that is lowered."
"I didn't see anyone staking out the hotel base when the FBI agents and I came here." I told Conan.
"Have we heard any word from Jim and Chen ever since they volunteered to check on the coded meeting place?" Jodie asked.
"About Agent Jim..." Conan piped up. "He fell to his death from an abandoned building and I saw Vodka there earlier... that's why I came to inform Akai-san."
I gasped at the news.
"They probably deciphered the code and ambushed him since it contained the date, time, and location of the meeting." Conan continued, and asked the agents to print two copies of the code. Then he explained how he deciphered the code by mirroring the letters and flipping them horizontally.
"It reads Beika District 3, Block 5, Cafe Guava!" I looked at the paper. "And the meeting time is today at 4 pm!"
"So to solve the code, you printed it out?" Camel asked.
"Nope! I solved it mentally earlier when I took a picture of the code on Agent Jim's phone." Conan revealed.
"To solve it mentally, I expect nothing less from you kid!" Shuichi praised. Conan also wrote down the code that corresponded to the English alphabet.
"This could be our chance to lure them in if we sent another message." Camel proposed.
Mark and Camel volunteered to go to the meeting place and Shuichi handed Camel a cap to hide his face.
***********
"There's no one at the hiding place!" the agents shouted before we heard gunshots over the radio. "Retreat!" the agents shouted.
"Is something happening?" Yusaku and Yukiko returned.
"How could they have realized it was a trap?" Jodie wondered.
"Who wrote the code this time?" Yusaku asked.
"It was Jodie-sensei!" Conan replied.
"Does the fact that he addresses you with "sensei" mean that you worked as a school teacher before?" Yusaku asked Jodie.
"Yes, I was an English teacher at Teitan High before..." Jodie responded. I nodded in affirmation. She was my teacher, although for only a short while.
********
"Jodie-san, you used Romanji in the academic way to write the cipher." Yusaku pointed out.
"In Romanji the letter Fu is written the same way Jodie-sensei did, but the way the other agents wrote it spelled out the letters." Conan explained. "In other words, 'Kadefu' the name of the district designated as the meeting place, should have been written as 'Kadehu.'"
The agents were shocked at the blunder, but our attention was quickly drawn by the fact that Camel was being chased by Gin as he headed to the meeting place. Camel was able to drop off his partner Mark at a nearby street since Mark got injured. After a high speed chase from Gin and Vermouth, Camel crashed into the water and swam to a nearby island.
***********
"Can you describe your whereabouts Camel?" Shuichi asked.
"There's some sort of building, what seems to be the ruins of a fortress" Camel replied.
"Could it be a sea fortress?" Conan wondered.
"I found a brick building!" we heard Camel say.
"Can you describe the pattern of the bricks in detail?" Yusaku asked.
"Each row has large and small bricks alternating with each other." Camel described.
"Then it's Umizarujima Island!" Yusaku realized. "It's the only island with a brick pattern that Camel-kun saw."
"It's difficult to rescue him while the Organization is there though..." Jodie pointed out.
"I'll go!" Shuichi said.
"But if they see you..." James said.
"Don't worry, I'll be going out like this." Shuichi was in his Subaru disguise.
"Even if he tries to swim to the coast without being seen though... he'll have to hold his breath for a while, which would be difficult in his weakened state." I worried.
"She's right." Conan agreed. "Someone has to give him a breather as well."
"Right, let's get going then. If you don't mind, I'll bring Conan-kun and Kaiya with me." Shuichi said to Yusaku.
Conan and I grinned and nodded.
*************
"I'm on Yokosuka's coast." I reported to Shuichi, after using Yukiko's motorcycle to get there.
"We've just arrived at Namikaze park, it has a panoramic view of the island." Shuichi replied.
"How's the status on Agent Camel?" I asked.
"We instructed him to hide underground to keep his body warm." Conan replied. Clever...
I gasped as I saw a fire on the island. "Umizaru Island is burning!"
"Camel, get out from underneath!" Shuichi ordered.
"I'll start swimming to his location." I told him.
***************
Conan POV
Shuichi had his rifle aimed while I gave him wind speed and direction from his tool.
"Run, Camel!" Shuichi ordered, and I gasped as a bullet pierced Camel's chest and he fell into the water.
Shuichi gave me a thumbs up to indicate that the plan was going accordingly.
"A hand grenade!" I exclaimed when I saw Gin hold one. The blast from the grenade would injure both Camel and Kaiya!
"I saw it." Shuichi replied, and shot the grenade out of Gin's hand, causing them to retreat.
***************
Kaiya POV
(underwater)
I gasped as there were bullets underwater, and Camel emerged through that chaos. Remembering the plan, I handed him the breather, and we swam to shore.
"Agent Camel, are you alright" I panted.
Camel nodded. "Still freezing."
"Agreed." I said, teeth chattering, and I pulled out some body warmers for us while we waited in the rendezvous location to be picked up.
"That was close." Camel sighed in relief.
*************
(back at the Kudo house)
"To achieve something... there must be a sacrifice..." Shuichi commented. The FBI agents stood solemnly as Yukiko gave Camel a haircut.
"Agent Camel, if it is any consolation, ummm...I think the new haircut suits you." I tried to lighten the mood in the room.
"Still...what exactly happened back there?" Jodie asked.
"After Camel was shot in the back, in the bag with the fake blood he had, his pen light, so it was easy to aim at." Shuichi explained.
"And the timing of the blood spattering was perfect since it made it look like the bullet pierced through the body." Conan said.
"I actually thought I was hit then... I really did throw up blood though due to the impact on my back." Camel said.
"I see... they wanted to aim for Camel's back since they wanted to see his face." James realized.
"Yes, and closing the fence at the pier ensured that they wouldn't aim for his legs."
"But if Akai-kun had shot first, wouldn't they have retreated?" James asked.
"In that scenario, they would have killed Camel-kun no matter what." Yusaku observed. "They would not retreat unless they believed Camel-kun was dead, and they were uninjured. And if Akai-kun shot poorly and kept them retreating, then there would have been a shootout between them and the people on the fireboat. So Akai-kun's plan was the best scenario. As expected of you, Akai-kun."
"No...it was all Conan's strategy! I'm glad I brought him along." Akai revealed.
I cheered and ruffled Conan's hair, much to his annoyance.
"But on our side, 7 agents were killed, and Mark is still heavily injured, and we drove away without any results." James concluded.
"Not exactly... I heard Vodka say that Rum has changed his face and adopted a silly name for himself." Camel piped up.
Rum... I knew who he was disguised as...Kanenori Wakita... who posed as a chef at the restaurant Beika Iroha Sushi.
"That complicates things..." an FBI agent commented.
I shook my head. "I think he would actually be a familiar face..." I covered my mouth, realizing my mistake too late.
"What do you mean by that Kaiya?" Shuichi asked.
Seeing as I could not come up with any excuse, I decided to sketch a picture of Rum's real appearance.
"He's the old man in the warehouse from two years ago!" Camel realized.
********
"Kaiya, wake up or you'll be late to school!" Yukiko came into my room. "Are you feeling alright, Kaiya?" Yukiko asked. "Usually you are diligent about waking up on time."
"It feels hot." I replied with a stuffy nose. My throat also felt dry and sore.
"Oh dear, you have a fever!" Yukiko placed her hand on my head. "You should stay home today."
"But-" I began.
"Nope, you're staying home and that's final." Yukiko ordered, and went to get a cold compress and some water for me.
I nodded, too tired to reply. My eyelids felt heavy and I soon fell asleep again. It was probably a bad idea to swim in the cold ocean water ...
*********
"You barely ate any of the porridge I made this morning." Shuichi noted when he came to check on me later.
"You made the porridge?" I asked. "I guessed as much." I laughed weakly.
"Is the porridge that bad?" Shuichi pouted.
"No its fine..." I lied. "I just didn't have much of an appetite."
"I'll try another recipe then." Shuichi sighed.
"Akai-san..." I sat up on the bed, wanting to ask the question that had been on my mind for while. "What made you want to become an FBI agent?" I asked.
"What a sudden question." Shuichi said.
"My school wants us to write a report about a career we're interested in." I explained.
"And you want to become an FBI agent?" Shuichi asked.
"I'm not sure..." I admitted. "Back then... seeing the Organization terrified me..., but I want to be able to help people."
"I see. Well it's a long story... maybe I'll tell you once you recover." Shuichi told me.
*********
(later in the afternoon)
I sighed as I looked at the amount of used tissues in the trash. Being sick is really miserable...
"Masumi-chan? Ran-chan?" I trudged downstairs sleepily and opened the door when I heard the doorbell ring.
"Kaiya-chan!" they greeted me.
"We heard you weren't feeling well so we brought your school materials here for you." Ran explained.
"That's very kind of you guys." I thanked them.
"May we borrow your kitchen?" Masumi asked me. "We were planning to make you some veggie soup. My mom always cooked that for me when I got sick."
"What a coincidence." Subaru came from the kitchen. "I was about to make some veggie soup as well. It's one the few things I know how to make... besides curry." he said sheepishly.
"We would be happy to help!" Ran offered and dragged Masumi into the kitchen with her.
"That sounds delicious!" I smiled and they busied themselves in the kitchen while I curled up on the sofa.
**********
Masumi POV
As I helped cut the veggies, my thoughts drifted to that Subaru person. I have a feeling he's hiding something...he resembles Shuichi a lot. They both use the 50-50 catch phrase, and the ingredients he picked... it's almost the same as mama's recipe!
**********
Kaiya POV
"I feel much better now." I smiled after drinking a small bowl of warm soup. "It's the best veggie soup I've ever had."
"See, I told you, the soup does wonders!" Masumi grinned.
"There's more soup in the pot if you want more." Ran told me.
"I'm really glad you guys are here, but I'm worried I might get you guys sick as well." I admitted.
"Nah, we'll be fine!" Masumi brushed it off. "Now, drink more soup so that you can get better soon!" she urged.
"I don't think my stomach can handle it..." I politely refused.
"But you've only finished one bowl." Ran noted. "You should try to eat some more." she said gently.
"Here comes the choo choo train!" Masumi said playfully and held a spoon of soup towards me.
"Masumi-chan, how old do you think I am?" I crossed my arms.
"Come on, Kaiya-chan, open up!" she grinned toothily.
"Noo!" I shouted and ran away. "Subaru-san, save me from Masumi-chan!"
Subaru looked up from the book he was reading and sighed.
