Kaiya POV
(at school)
"As you all know, Sports Day is coming, and I want you all to do your best!" our sensei announced.
"What's Sports Day?" I whispered to Ran, who was sitting next to me.
"Eh? You don't know?" Sonoko blinked. "It's a sports competition between different classes at school."
"This year, it will be different as our school will have a joint competition with Ekoda High School" our sensei continued.
Ekoda High School... does that mean he will be there too?
"Kaiya" Masumi lightly bonked me on the head with her textbook. "Whatcha spacing out for? Sensei just dismissed us."
"She had such a dreamy look on her face." Ran laughed lightly.
"Now that I recall, doesn't that Saguru Hakuba guy attend Ekoda High School?" Sonoko wore a smug expression.
"W-What are you talking about, Sonoko? Why would I ever think about that detective freak?" I turned away slightly embarrased.
******************
(next day)
"Akai-san, are you going on a mission?" I asked during breakfast, noticing the packed bags by the door.
"It seems that I'll be gone for a few days." Shuichi glanced up from a stack of papers. "Will you be alright alone?"
I nodded. "I can also go to Dr. Agasa's place if necessary. Umm do you think you'll be back by next Wednesday?" I asked.
"I'll try to return as soon as I can. Is there something important happening that day?" he wanted to know.
"Ah it's nothing..." I trailed off glancing at a digital flier for a school event for families on my phone. It's probably too risky for Shuichi to come anyways... "I-I'll be heading off to school now."
The Kudos were away on a business trip as well...
******************
(after school)
"Are you excited for Sports Day?" Sonoko asked as we packed up our belongings.
"Well... I asked Dad and Mom to come, but I don't know..." Ran said. "I wonder if Shinichi will come..."
"My parents can't come since they're uh overseas..." I replied sheepishly.
"Neither can mine." Masumi explained.
"Still... let's go look at the team assignments." I suggested.
"Kaiya, Masumi!" Sonoko pointed. "Look, you guys will be representing the class in the relay race!" Sonoko slammed a piece of paper on the desk. "And Ran has a solo sprint race!" We looked at each happily when we saw our names on the roster.
**************
(at Agasa's house)
"You guys sure seem excited!" I carried a tray of snacks for the detective boys into the living room.
"Sports Day is coming up!" Ayumi cheered.
"Oh right, you guys have your event the day after mine, right?" I looked at the flyer they were passing around.
"Can we come watch yours?" Genta asked.
"I want to come too!" Mitsuhiko and Ayumi insisted.
"Might as well." Haibara said, and Conan nodded.
**************
(later that night)
I closed my textbook and stared out the window at the night sky.
"You miss them don't you?" Haibara approached me. "Your parents."
"You could tell?" I turned to her. "Everyone's family will be there for Sports Day, b-but..." my voice wavered.
"We're in the same boat." she sipped a hot drink. "I've gotten used to the loneliness. It's not so bad having the detective boys around."
"Thanks...Shiho." I hugged her. It was one of the rare instances she didn't protest about me calling her by her real name...
**************
(day of the event)
I sat on a bench with Masumi, watching our classmates interact with their families before the event started.
"So..." Masumi asked. "Are you ready for the relay race?"
"I hope so... it's my first time participating in this type of events." I said.
"I've been in a few... they were quite fun." Masumi reminisced. "Look, the detective boys are cheering you on." she nodded in their direction. I stifled a laugh at them pestering Agasa who was holding a tripod. Conan and Haibara wore exhausted looks.
"Even so... but it's not as fun as I imagined right now though..." I sighed.
"We can't have that, can we?" A voice said.
"S-Subaru-san?" I turned around in surprise. "You made it! How did you know about the event?"
"Agasa happened to show me a flier since Teitan Elementary also had a similar event, so I decided to drop by..." he explained.
"It means a lot to me." I wore a grateful look. His expression turned to one of surprise as I gave him a hug. "Masumi and I are doing a relay race today!" I said with a grin.
"I'll be sure to capture all of that." Subaru pulled out a camera.
"Alright Masumi, let's do this!" I grabbed her arm, running towards to the field.
***************
First up were the solo races where students drew a random slip of paper with a description, and ask a person to run with them.
"Someone who cares about me..." Masumi muttered looking at her paper.
"Kaiya, would you run this race with me?" Masumi asked.
"Hmm... I have someone better in mind." I grinned, calling Subaru over.
He wore a surprised look as Masumi eagerly dragged him to the race.
"I wonder what that paper said." Conan asked.
I showed him the piece of paper Masumi had.
"I see." Conan smiled.
***************
Soon it was time for my relay race.
"I can't believe we're in the same relay race." a voice said as I finished tying my shoelaces.
"Kaito, you're in this race too?" I blinked.
"Of course, its a race between Class 2-B from both schools. I had to be paired with him out of all people." he glared at Saguru with an annoyed look.
"No way, we're both running first!" I realized. It would be me vs Saguru and then Kaito vs Masumi.
"I should be rooting for my own team, but run faster than him for me, will ya?" Kaito told me.
"Baka Kaito!" Aoko bonked him on the head and looked at me apologetically. "Just ignore him."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Saguru sighed at Kaito's statement.
I turned around to see Saguru. "Oh, you seem pretty confident." I raised an eyebrow at Saguru.
Saguru and I shook hands and wished each other luck.
************
"On your marks, get set, go!" the announcer blew the whistle. "Teitan High School's Kaiya Matsuki is in the lead, with Ekoda High School's Saguru Hakuba close behind." the announcer shouted. "The distance between them is rapidly closing."
Approaching the line, I could see Masumi extending her hand for the baton. I can't lose to Saguru!
"How dare she run in the same race as my beloved Kaito.... " Akako thought, moving her fingers to perform magic to move a small rock.
My foot suddenly slipped on a rock, causing me to stumble, but I managed to pass the baton to Masumi around the same time Saguru handed off his baton to Kaito.
"Kaiya!" Masumi turned to me with a concerned look as I fell to the ground.
"Just run, don't worry about me!" I shouted. Masumi began to protest but eventually focused on the race.
"You've scraped your knee." Saguru helped me up, only for me to fall back down again.
"Ouch." I winced, rubbing my knee. "I might be imagining things but somehow I felt the ground move beneath me."
"It must be Akako's doing" Saguru muttered. " Anyways, get on, I'll take you to the nurse's office." He knelt beside me.
"B-But Saguru a piggyback ride in front of everyone..." I hesitated.
"Stop complaining and get on already!" He said with a slight blush.
"T-Thank you." I said he took me to the nurse's office. I turned away, unable to face the glaring daggers from the other girls. Saguru is really popular, isn't he?
****************
Ran POV
Sonoko squealed and took pictures as Saguru carried Kaiya off the field. "Oh, they're so cute together! If only Shinichi was here too!"
"What are you talking about?" I scolded her lightly. But still... I did wish Shinichi was here.
After my race, I also had to pull a slip of paper from a box and ask someone to run with me.
"Someone you love" I read the contents.
"Say, Conan-kun, would you like to run with me?" I smiled.
"S-Sure Ran-neechan!" he jumped off his seat happily.
*****************
Conan POV
"Someone sure seems happy." Haibara smirked at me, holding the paper.
Huh... the paper said "someone you love"?!
"Conan-kun, are you alright? Your face is all red." Ran worried.
"I-I'm fine, Ran-neechan."
*****************
(after the event)
"Subaru-san, Kaiya-neechan told me to tell you that she went out to lunch with her friends." I relayed her message.
"I see." He replied with a thoughtful expression.
"Sonoko, you can't do that!" our conversation was interrupted with Ran arguing with Sonoko in the background.
"What does Sonoko-neechan want to do this time?" I asked.
"She wants to follow Kaiya to the restaurant she's hanging out at!" Ran explained.
"Of course I have to, that Saguru Hakuba is there too." Sonoko retorted.
*****************
Masumi POV
"You did well, Masumi" a young girl with blond hair hopped down from a tree.
"Mama, you watched the whole event?" I asked happily.
"I wouldn't miss it for anything." she replied.
*****************
Kaiya POV
"How about the four of us go out for lunch?" Kaito suggested.
"Would you like to pick the restaurant?" Aoko asked me.
"Since you don't come around here often, you should be the one choose!" I told her.
"Then... how about sushi?" she had a mischievous grin. Kaito wore a scared look, and I stifled a laugh knowing his dislike for fish.
"Good thinking Aoko, sushi sounds good." I replied.
Saguru nodded in agreement.
"Then I know the perfect place! There's a restaurant I've been wanting to try!" Aoko clapped her hands in delight. "Ta-da!" Aoko smiled proudly. "It's Iroha Sushi!" we stopped at the entrance.
************
"The food was amazing!" Aoko clapped in delight as the food was served.
"Mhm, this sushi is delicous!" I savored each bite.
"I'm glad you enjoy it. Afterall I'm learning from the best sushi chefs here." we heard a voice from behind us.
I turned around to see a man with an eyepatch and a funny mustache and large teeth nod at us. I should have realized... this was the Iroha Sushi restaurant Kaneori Wakita worked at...
"Kaiya, what's wrong?" Saguru noticed my shocked expression.
"Oh it's nothing" I brushed it off. To see Kaneori Wakita in person was bit unnerving, given his true identity...but for what it's worth... he was a surprisingly good chef.
**********
"I'm stuffed, that sushi was delicious!" Kaito exclaimed.
"Didn't you just say you were stuffed?" Saguru reminded Kaito.
"There's always room for dessert!" Kaito insisted.
"We'll definitely come to this sushi place again." Aoko said.
Wakita nodded and resumed his preparations for making a delivery. However as he made his way to the entrance, a big surly man bumped into to Wakita causing him to spill his coffee on his shirt.
"Now look what you've done!" The man roared. "Do you know how much it costs to dry clean this suit? You owe me 8000 yen!"
"Mister, it was you who bumped into Wakita-san in the first place." I piped up, surprising myself. It just didn't feel right to stand by and do nothing.
"What did you say, brat?" He man grabbed me roughly by my collar.
"Kaiya!" Aoko exclaimed.
"It wasn't his fault." I repeated. "Besides you're a scammer."
"8000 yen is an unreasonable price." Saguru argued.
"He's right you know, dry cleaning would be no more than 2500 yen for the suit." I told the man.
"You brat this is Ralpho Lauren!" The man proclaimed.
"Your suit isn't a luxury brand." Kaito pointed out. "I'm an expert in distinguishing fake from real things."
"Besides it's Ralph Lauren, not Ralpho Lauren." Saguru corrected the man.
"Don't try to scam us and release Kaiya at once." Aoko ordered.
"How dare you guys for making a fool out of me!" The man growled. "You owe us money kid if you want us to release you." He tossed my purse to one of his men, who began rummaging through my purse.
"Look what I found, a weird medicine box." The man's subordinate took it out of the bag. My eyes widened. The antidote is in there, I can't let him open it.
"Don't touch stuff that isn't yours!" I twisted the man's shoulder and twisted his arm behind his back pinning him to the ground and threw him towards the man holding my purse, causing him to drop it. Dusting my hands, I retrieved my purse.
Saguru whistled.
"She warned ya." Kaito shrugged.
"Who do you think you're messing with, kid?" The rest of the man's accomplices began to surround us.
"Kaiya, perhaps now is a good time to leave." Saguru pulled my hand.
"I agree with him for once." Kaito grabbed Aoko's hand.
"On the count of three, run!" Saguru dashed out the restaurant, dragging me behind.
"Hey Saguru, Kaito and Aoko went the other direction!" I told him.
"It's alright they will be fine if they stick together." He replied.
"Well for now let's hide in here!" I pulled Saguru inside Poirot Cafe.
**************
Wakita POV
"I must ask you to leave, as you are disturbing my patrons." I told the men.
The man began to protest but one look at the dangerous look at gave him, he ordered his men to leave. I put on my facade as I turned around.
It would be have easy have stopped them earlier, but I was curious as to how the events would play out. In the end I did see something worth investigating... the girl Kaiya Matsuki had an interesting looking medicine box.
**************
Kaiya POV
"Welcome to Poirot!" Azusa greeted us. "Erm are you guys alright?" She asked, noticing us catching our breaths.
"We got into some trouble earlier." I replied sheepishly. "So we're just hiding from them." I explained, as some men rushed past Poirot, most likely looking for us.
"Why am I not surprised?" Amuro sighed. "I'll get some ice for your knee." he noticed my injuries.
"Say Kaiya, is he your boyfriend?" Azusa whispered to me, glancing at Saguru.
I shook my head. "It's nothing like that."
**************
"Despite everything that happened it was still a fun day." I said, icing my knee.
"I suppose it was." Saguru agreed, fiddling with his pocketwatch.
"The pocketwatch must have some sentimental value for you to carry it around." I looked at the pocketwatch curiously.
"It's a gift from my mum. My parents are always busy so it's just mostly Baaya around." He explained.
"I understand." I placed a comforting hand on him. "Subaru-san, Professor Agasa, and the detective boys came to cheer me on today in place of my parents."
**************
Saguru offered to walk me home, but as we were about to leave, we saw three figures hiding behind newspapers, causing me to deadpan. Of course they would be there.
"Those three look familiar don't they?" Saguru laughed.
"What are you three doing here?" Saguru and I approached the table.
"Hi..." Ran, Sonoko, and Conan lowered the newspapers.
"How did you guys manage to identify us so easily?" Sonoko asked.
"Well your outfits are quite conspicuous." Saguru pointed out.
"It was her idea." Ran and Conan looked at Sonoko pointedly, who laughed embarrassingly.
**********
(the next day)
"Are you guys ready for your races?" I asked the detective boys, who were very excited. Ran, Sonoko and I watched the race along with Wakasa-sensei and Kobayashi-sensei from the sidelines.
"We'll do our best!" they cheered.
After their races, they came to grab some water from the stands. As Haibara twisted the lid on her bottle water, she gripped my hand in fear.
"What's wrong Ai-chan, you can sense them right now?" I worried. I turned to see a delivery motorcycle from Iroha Sushi pass the gates of the school. Coincidentally, Wakasa discreetly adjusted her hat lower to cover her face.
"Did you see anyone?" Conan noticed my expression.
"Not in particular." I shook my head.
**********
Mary Sera POV
"Mama, my friend gave me some pictures from Sports Day." Masumi handed me some photos. "I thought you might want to take a look."
I had a small smile as I flipped through the photos, pausing on a photo of the man Subaru Okiya and Masumi competing in the race together. There's no doubt about it... he must be Shuichi...when the time comes I will approach him, but its more than enough that he seems happy in this photo...
