"Jesus." I was jolted out of my sleep as the door flew open. "A little quieter next time?" I looked up at the door, getting used to the light.
Still here, I see. When did I even fall asleep?
But I know one thing. This chair is not ideal for sleeping. I don't recommend this one.
Without saying a word, a blonde walked over to me with something in her hands. Since I had just woken up, I didn't have time to register what it was.
But when she stood behind me, I was waiting for a knife. That didn't happen though.
I watched her shadow on the ground, and noticed that she bent down to my bound hands. I felt something cold on them, and then suddenly the ropes loosened.
What's going on?
"Step out of here and we'll find out. Run, and the moment you step on the grass you'll get an electric shock that will take you a day to recover from." She freed my hands and I immediately grabbed them.
In addition to the red spots, they also had new bracelets. They were black and didn't look like they could be taken off just like that.
"What is it?" I raised my hands in front of her.
"I litteraly told you just a second ago. It's not my fault you don't listen to me." She started walking towards the door and I immediately untied my legs from the chair.
"Hey!" I stood up and the blonde stopped in the doorway. "Why are you doing this? Why don't you just kill me?"
She snorted. "If it was up to me," she turned her head to the side, "you wouldn't be here anymore."
"So why am I here?"
"Because Killian thinks you're still Lyssa."
"But you don't." I crossed my arms over my chest and smiled.
"Don't try to take them off, it'll hurt like a bitch." She walked out the door and slammed it behind her.
"Have a nice day too." I said, looking at the door. "Now what the hell is this?" I looked down at my wrists.
It must be some kind of technology. But it doesn't seem like something they should have access to.
If it does what she said, I have a problem.
These wristbands cannot be taken off without a device controlling them.
This doesn't help me much.
I'm screwed a little.
"Where are you going?" Luna entered the office.
"Theo found where Lyssa left before she came to us. We'll go look there. Maybe we'll find something."
"Great, I'm coming with you." She turned on her heel and went out the door. "Oh and by the way," she peeked in, "I gave her the bracelets. I'll be here in a minute." She left.
"Do you think she's okay?" Theo asked after a moment.
When I looked up at him, I noticed that he was still looking at the door where she had been a moment ago.
"She looks cool." I shrugged.
"No, she's acting strange." He breathed heavily. "I thought when I got back..." He trailed off.
"That when you got back, what?" I looked up at him and noticed a red box in his hand. "Oh." I stared at the box in amazement.
"I thought it was about time, but it doesn't look like it right now." He hid it back in his pocket. "Maybe it's a sign."
"Since when do you believe in signs?" I frowned. "Do what you think is right. Buy flowers or something, what do I know?"
"Have you ever thought about it? Wedding?"
The only person I could stand being with for the rest of my life is down right now and doesn't remember me. "No."
"Not even with..."
"Are we going?" He was interrupted by Luna in the doorway.
"Yes, we'll be right there." I stood up and started walking around the table to the door.
"Killian." Theo stopped me and took a breath. "Nothing. Sorry."
*****
"Is this supposed to be it?" Luna asked from the back seat.
We pulled up in front of a building that looked abandoned, but not neglected. It looked like any other on this street.
"That's the camera." Theo pointed at a pole a few meters away. "It caught her coming out of this building."
"Then let's go." Luna got out of the car and us with her.
We stopped in front of the entrance as Theo took his cell phone out of his pocket. "Two floors, but there's a room underground. We should go from the bottom."
"Or split up." Luna crossed her arms over her chest. "It would be faster."
"And more dangerous. We're going together." I started walking towards the door and entered the building.
"The plan says we need to go through here." Theo slipped past me and walked leading us.
"What do you expect to find?" Luna was walking next to me.
"Anything." We went down the stairs carefully.
"That could be a lot of things."
"Shit." We both turned our attention to Theo standing in front of the open door.
We walked over to it and looked inside.
"You probably didn't want to find this, am I right?" Luna asked.
I didn't hesitate and went inside. I don't know if I expected it to disappear when I entered, but it didn't.
There was a body.
Dead for a few days now. There was blood all around the table where the body was placed.
It was cut down enough to make it difficult to identify the person.
The photos that Luna brought me are much different than seeing it live.
"You still think it's Lyssa?" Luna came up to me.
"I..." I stopped.
"She's gone, I hope you can see that now."
"Guys, you should see this." Theo spoke from behind us.
I turned away from the body and walked over to him.
I was looking at the wall full of photos he was standing in front of. Next to some was Lyssa's writing. Addresses, times and names.
"She's been following Nyx for quite some time." He pointed to the photos that Nyx was in.
"And she watched Charles even longer." We both looked at Luna at the other table with a book in hand. She walked over to us and handed it to me.
It is not a book, but rather a diary.
I quickly went through it and came across Charles' name many times. But the things she wrote about him were not what I expected.
She is trying to find him to kill him. She doesn't remember who he is, she's just looking for him.
"It looks like she's taking notes so she doesn't forget." I frowned.
"Whatever it is, we're taking it with us. Theo, could you..." She turned to Theo, who was photographing the wall. "Oh." She smiled. "Nothing." She looked back at me. "You should check out the last thing she wrote.
I turned the pages to the last one written. There was some dried blood on it.
"Read." She instructed me.
I shouldn't have. I shouldn't have read it.
Subject 372 lasted four hours and twenty-six minutes with injuries. She stopped talking after three hours and twenty minutes. The struggle stopped after half an hour...
"You see?"
I closed the book and looked at Luna. "Are you glad you're right?" I snorted. "Con-fucking-gratulations." I turned and started walking away.
"Killian!" She shouted after me. "I didn't mean it. Killian!"
*****
I threw the book on the ground at her feet. "Where did you get that?" She frowned.
"You forgot to get rid of the body."
"Maybe I expected you to find it. Have you finally realized that I'm not who you think I am?" She crossed her arms over her chest.
"Who are you working for?"
"Nobody."
"I'm not in the mood for your games. Who do you work for?" I said more sternly.
"But I like games." She smiled. "Everything would be boring without them." She winked at me.
"Can you be serious for just a few minutes?" I raised my voice.
"And why would I do that?"
"It's killing me, Lyssa. The way you look at me like I'm nobody. I know you, and I know there's still Lyssa in there somewhere. I won't stop until I get you back."
"It was fun at first, but now you're like a broken record. I'll get you back, Lyssa. I won't give up. Aren't you tired already?" She frowned. "How many times do I have to tell you I'm not Lyssa? I may look like her, but I'm not her."
"You have a snake tattoo on your arm. A birthmark at the back of your thigh. A stab wound scar on your stomach. Is that enough for you? Because I can tell you where every mark is if that's not enough."
"I don't have a tattoo." She finally spoke and rolled up her sleeves on both arms which she showed me. "See?"
The tattoo was no longer where the mark of the white snakes had once been. But instead there was a burn.
"What happened to you?"
"If you know my body so well, shouldn't you know?" She snorted.
"You know I'm telling the truth. Why don't you trust me?"
"Trust you?" She snorted. "Look where I am. Should I really trust you?" She pointed around.
"You wouldn't be here if you tried to remember!"
"There's nothing to remember!" She screamed and took a few steps towards me. "I'm not your Lyssa, get that into that fucking stupid head of yours!"
"Look me in the eye and tell me you don't give a damn about anyone from here."
She took another step towards me. I could feel her breath on my face.
"I don't give a fuck about anyone from here. Not you, that blonde, anyone in or out of this building. There isn't a single person I care about in the whole world!"
"Okay." I swallowed hard. "Then you will have no problem killing me." I took out a gun from my belt and handed it to her. "Come on. Do it. Kill me." I took a step back. "You don't care about anyone, so do it."
"You think I won't do it?" She snorted and pointed at me. "You're really stupid. I pulled the trigger once, I'll do it again."
"Then why am I still standing?" I frowned. "I think you knew that the gun was empty. That's why you had no problem shooting. But this one is full. Come on, shoot if you can."
"You know, I even liked you. Shame on you, but you gave me a loaded gun. What did you expect?" I released the safety on the gun. "Last words?"
I don't know why I'm even giving him that chance. I should kill him immediately. What's wrong with me?
"You may not be Lyssa, but you have her face. I wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't say it. I love you, Lyssa." He smiled. "I fucking love you."
"They could have been better." I shrugged my shoulders.
My finger dropped to the trigger as I looked into his eyes. I have always considered the eyes to be the window to the soul. I loved when life was drained from them. There was just something about it.
I pressed the trigger in my head. But only in my head. As if the order from my brain didn't reach my hand.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that my hand started shaking slightly.
What is going on?
I grabbed the gun with my other hand as well.
What are you doing, Eris? Fucking shoot.
I'm really trying.
"Lyssa..." He took a step towards me.
"No." I cut him off and stepped back. "Eris. My name is Eris." I said between my teeth. "I always have been and always will be." My breathing suddenly quickened.
"Please..."
"Stop it. Just stop it." I feel like I'm going to throw up all my guts in seconds. That must be bad, right?
"Just try to remember, please."
"No." I let go of the gun and it fell to the ground. "No, no, no." I grabbed my head.
Come on, Eris. Get it together. This is not you.
"Get it together." I whispered to myself.
"It's okay." He came closer to me and tried to grab my shoulder. But before his hand could even touch my shoulder, it retreated.
"No! Leave me alone."
Kill him.
I can't.
Kill. Him.
"Those voices." I hit my head with my palm. "Stop them. No. No. No." I backed away until my back hit the wall.
Kill him. You have no choice. Kill him or they'll kill you. They'll come for you.
"Please stop."
"Lyssa, please tell me what to do." I heard his voice, but the ones in my head were louder. They started shouting. So loud.
So much that it felt like my head was about to explode. "Please." I was clutching my head. "Stop it."
One second they were shouting and the next there was silence. Peace.
I felt a slight pain that went from my hands to my whole body.
The pain stopped the voices, but I felt nothing after it.
I guess I must have passed out.
