3rd POV (Y/n) couldn't stop now. She had to reach Cherry in time. She had to make sure he was okay. She was almost at the spot where Adam struck the AI skater in the face. There were just so many things going on in her head. Her mind was racing almost as fast as how she was skating.
"Ch-Cherry."
At that moment, (Y/n) saw the two skaters, one standing and one laying on the ground, in the distance. She felt her heart skip a beat as she gained more speed. Once she was at a good distance, she stops her skateboard and runs in their direction after picking up her board.
Cherry didn't look too good. His mask was ripped and he practically looked as if he could pass out at any moment.
"Cherry!" the child yells in his direction, which catches both the AI skater and Matador of Love's attention. Cherry slowly and shakily turned his head in the direction of the Phoenix skater with a look of worry as she kneels down beside him. "Cherry, are you okay?"
Cherry's breath hitched as he took in a deep breath before exhaling an answer as best as he can. "I-I'm fine, (Y/n)," he mumbles lowly to the (h/c)-haired girl. (Y/n) placed her un-gloved hand on Cherry's masked cheek as she felt tears threatening to well up in her eyes. "Y-you're gonna be okay. Y-you just gotta be," the child says, almost as if she was pleading for a miracle to occur and help the pink-haired male.
But before Cherry could say anything else in response, Adam interrupts the conversation as he takes a step forward. "Look who decided to join us." Upon hearing his voice, (Y/n) looked up at the blue-haired pro skater with a look of fear in her tearful eyes. Adam was just standing there with a very creepy smile on his face, his body almost as if was looming over her smaller frame as she felt intimidated by the person. "Hello, there, my little birdie~"
(Y/n) didn't respond back to him. She just remained quiet as she looked up at Adam with her mouth slightly agape at the sight of him. Cherry let out a groan as he looked back at Adam with hate in his eyes. "Leave her out of this, Adam... Don't involve her in this."
Adam chuckled as he looks back at Cherry, his smile never leaving his face. "Oh, I won't get her involved in this..." he said as he then put his attention back to the nine-year-old girl, his voice getting deeper as he spoke the next thing on his mind. "...Not yet, at least."
Cherry didn't like what he heard. He sent one more glare towards the Matador of Love before he closes his eyes and he passes out.
(Y/n) hardly understood what Adam just said, but didn't bother to ask what exactly he said. It's not like she wants to find out anyway.
But right at that moment, the girl heard the sound of running footsteps and heavy panting getting louder. She breaks eye contact with Adam and looks back in the direction she came from and sees Joe running in their direction.
"Kaoru!" he yells as he knelt down beside his childhood friend with (Y/n) moving over a bit so that he could have room to check how Cherry was. "C'mon, get up," Joe tries encouraging the AI skater to get up, but the said male was already passed out on the ground. The green-haired male wanted to say something else, but Adam interrupted him before he got the chance to.
"You know, I really thought this would be more fun. But that little race against Cherry turned out to be a bomb," he tells Joe as the said male and (Y/n) look up at Adam, one looking pissed and the other looking more fearful than before as more tears welled up in her eyes.
Joe sends a glare to his rival as he speaks with venom in his tone of voice. "Seriously? Son of a bitch."
Suddenly, the sound of a car engine rolling up into the scene could be heard behind Joe and (Y/n). They both turn around and see a familiar-looking pink car with a familiar-looking clown-faced skater in the driver's seat of the vehicle. Shadow lowers his window and pokes his head out so that he could speak to them. "Get in! We gotta jet to the hospital! Wrap it up!"
Joe didn't hesitate to pick up Cherry's unconscious body in his arms in a bridal style as he carries him to the back seat of the car. (Y/n) had also stood up from her knelt position and hopped into the passenger seat of the car. As soon as everyone was in, Shadow puts the metal to the pedal and sped off to the nearest hospital just outside of "S."
Upon arriving at the facility, Joe runs in while carrying Cherry as Shadow remains in the car. (Y/n) follows after them as best as she can as she holds her skateboard close to her chest. She puts her hood over her head as she grew nervous. She was worried for Cherry and was hoping that he would turn out okay.
After Cherry was given the medical attention that he needs, Joe and (Y/n) sit down on two chairs by the room the AI skater was currently in. They were waiting patiently to hear the results of Cherry's condition. Well, one of them was.
Joe lets out a sigh as he sits back, but he notices that (Y/n) was still there. It was very late at night and he was worried about her well-being. She is still a growing child and needs her sleep. He also noticed how tense she was with her (2/f/c) hood over her head. Her eyes were fixated on the smooth surface of the hospital floor, but they were trembling ever so slightly.
He now focuses his attention on her with a concerned look on his face. "(Y/n), you should probably go home. You look like you need rest after everything that happened tonight," he tells the girl.
(Y/n) shakes her head as she continues to look down, her worried expression never going away. She felt more anxious at the thought of leaving Cherry behind in the hospital without knowing how things would turn out for him. She places her gloved hand over her non-gloved hand and starts to fidget.
"No. I need to know if he's okay," the child says in a low voice but loud enough for Joe to hear her speak. The green-haired male could see how much the (h/c)-haired girl cares for his childhood friend and smiles. His expression turns to a warm and reassuring one as his gaze never leaves her.
"I get it. You want him to turn out okay. I feel the same way." He sits back as he looks up at the ceiling and goes deep into thought. He inhales deeply and then exhales, which helps him to calm down. "I've known Kaoru for so long that I would grow worried if something like this ever happened to him. I just hoped it wouldn't happen this soon... or ever."
(Y/n) switches her gaze from the ground and looks in Joe's direction as she lifts up an eyebrow. "You're worried about him? You seem really good at hiding it. I always see you two fighting almost all of the time, which could look like you guys hate each other's guts."
Joe chuckles at the child's observation of the relationship between him and his pink-haired friend. He also notices how her expression changes a bit, which meant that he was distracting her from the situation at hand. He just needs to continue the conversation so that she feels better. "Yes, we may be fighting and arguing most of the time, but that proves to show how strong our bond is. It may appear like I hate him, but it's really because I'm worried about him. We both went through hard times regarding Adam." Joe's smile grows brighter at the memories they had of arguing over things that probably didn't even matter now, but the thought of Adam causes him to become a bit more serious. He brushes that thought away as he goes back to the topic of the injured skater. "Besides that, Cherry wouldn't want us to be this way, especially if it was in front of him. He would want us to stay strong for him and just hope for the best."
The girl nods her head as she thinks about everything Joe said so far. His mentioning of Adam gets her to wonder what the Matador of Love was like in the past. She just had to ask and know more about him. "Hey, Joe? You and Cherry both knew Adam in the past, right? What was he like?"
Joe was sort of taken aback by the question. He was trying not to get into the topic of Adam s that she wouldn't feel overwhelmed. But if she wasn't feeling that way, then he wouldn't see why he shouldn't talk about that psycho skater. He takes a deep breath before practically explaining the backstory of how he and his childhood friend met him:
"We met Adam when Kaoru challenged him to a 'beef.' After that, we became inseparable. Adam showed us a whole different view of skating and even told us how special and different we were from everyone else he knew. At some point, we formed 'S' together. It was during that time that Adam began to spiral out of control, which concerned me as Kaoru and I kept stumbling across him injuring other skaters during 'beefs.' What affected us the most was when he left for America, leaving and abandoning us in the dark."
(Y/n) was so surprised to hear all of this new information. She was so intrigued to listen to more of the story, not even realizing that it was distracting her from thinking about Cherry at the moment. Joe pauses before speaking again, this time closing his eyes as if imagining the new person Adam is now.
"I guess this is one reason why Kaoru and I-- mostly Kaoru-- want to beef against him so badly. We felt betrayed by our former friend. I noticed how much he tried to avoid us when it came to accepting our challenges to a 'beef.' At first, I thought he was just afraid to get his ass handed to him, but now I see why he never did want to race us."
The child thinks for a bit before answering. "Didn't he say it was because he saw you guys as boring people?" she asks, recalling what she heard Adam say to Joe before they got to the hospital and then translating it in her head. The six-pack skater nods his head as he opens his eyes again. "Yes. Adam is like a predator targeting its prey. He looks for the skaters that take his interest and goes for them. Almost like how it is for you."
(Y/n) didn't need Joe to clarify what he meant by that. She knew what Adam was like just from her first encounter with him. And after hearing what Joe explained about him, it all ties together now. She looks down at her hands and clenches them into a fist, feeling as if she had some sort of power that she hoped she would never lose.
"He sees me as someone with great potential. Someone who is a great skater with talent considering that I'm only nine years old. The same goes for Langa. I can see why he's targeting us," (Y/n) says to herself as she looks down, pulling her hood over her head even more so that it wouldn't slip off.
Joe notices the gesture she did and saw how nervous she was. If anything, he didn't want her to feel like she was doing something wrong just because she was good at skateboarding. It's something to be proud of. He lifts his hand and pulls her hood down so that her beautiful (h/l) (h/c) hair was now revealed. (Y/n) looks up at Joe with a confused look, but all he does is smile in a fatherly-figured way.
"Don't see it as something you should be ashamed about. Your love for skateboarding makes up who you are. Embrace that talent and don't let go of it." he tells the child in a tone that really put her nerves to ease. "You're not alone, (Y/n). You have us. We would never leave you." Just hearing those words leave his mouth causes a small smile to form on her face. She remembers that she is indeed not alone out here in this world. She has people she could count on and she's happy about that.
At that moment, all of her fears and worries seemed to have vanished into thin air. She nods her head as a way to show that she appreciates Joe's advice and comfort. "Thanks, Joe."
The green-haired male smiles warmly at her as he reaches into his pockets and takes something out of it. (Y/n) grew curious about what he had until the item was now in view. He was holding her other skating glove that slipped off her hand when he tried to stop her from running off when Cherry got injured. Her eyes sparkle when seeing it. She takes it from him and puts it back on, flexing her fingers so that it fits perfectly on her hand.
She then looks back at Joe with a thankful smile. "Thanks, again," she says, feeling like the missing piece that she forgot she lost was now found. Speaking of "missing piece," her thoughts seem to wander to the present time and not the past from when she first arrived in Japan. The one person she was trying to find in the first place was still not found, but she didn't seem to worry about that now. She was just looking forward to how things are going to turn out in the future.
~~~~~~~~~~
In the Shindo manor, a certain blue-haired man is sitting in front of his desk as he looks down at his phone, no longer in his skating outfit. Ainosuke was rewatching the race he just had with his former skating friend over and over again with a sadistic smirk on his face. The screen now shows what the drones caught right as Phoenix arrives at the scene.
The said girl kneels down next to the AI skater to check if he was alright. He zooms in to get a better look at the girl's face and sees the worry and fear being expressed when she looks at the Matador of Love. He thought it was funny to see that look on his victims.
"What's with this face, love? You look like you just saw a ghost. Am I really that scary~?" he says out loud in a playful tone of voice almost as if he was talking to the child on the screen of his phone. A look of pleasure and desire is expressed on his face as his eyes are locked onto her (e/c) eyes.
But at that moment, the door to Ainosuke's office opens, and a familiar purplish-black-haired male now in his formal suit walks in with a file in his hands. Ainosuke looks up at his secretary and smiles. All of the negative thoughts he had toward that snake-like skater seemed to have left his mind as his focus was now on what the male had in his possession.
"Oh, Tadashi, you're back. What is it you have there?" Ainosuke asks the male, sounding curious to know what he has to say.
Tadashi places the file in front of Ainosuke on his desk as he explains what he has. "It's from the case Inspector Kamata was assigned to investigate... and also the case you told me to find out about. It all comes down to this fugitive," he tells Ainosuke.
Now feeling intrigued, Ainosuke puts his phone in his pocket and picks up the file. He doesn't waste any time opening the flap and looking at the first sheet of paper that is presented to him. His eyes scan the printed words until they land on a small photo of the said fugitive. He immediately recognizes the person's profile as his serious gazee turns into a mischievous one.
"Hm, interesting. Kiriko really has her hands full on this one, doesn't she?" He thinks to himself for a few seconds before an idea comes to mind. He looks away from the file and faces Tadashi who was standing there with his hands behind his back and a blank expression plastered on his face. "Ready the car, Puppy. There is someone we must have a word with. You know where to find them."
Tadashi bows his head with the same expressionless look as he speaks to the higher-ranked man. "Yes, sir. Of course." Ainosuke stands up from his chair as he along with his servant walks toward the doorway of the office, leaving the file and stack of papers on his desk. Some part of him felt excited to see this person, almost like a spark has lit up inside of him.
He had to hide that feeling for now, but his smirk never faded. In fact, it seemed to have gotten brighter.
~~~~~~~~~~
It's been more than half an hour or so at the hospital and Kojiro and (Y/n) are still waiting on the chairs. The child had her head resting on Kojiro's arm with her eyes closed, getting tired after each minute. To her, waiting felt like an eternity and her worries seemed to have come back the longer she waited. The only thing in the back of her mind was Cherry.
'Cherry... Please be okay.'
And almost as if her prayers have been answered, the door to Cherry's room opens and a nurse walks out with a clipboard. Kojiro immediately sits up, which causes (Y/n) to shift back in her seat as her eyes fluttered open. The sight of the nurse catches both of their attention as she looks in their direction.
"He is going to be okay. You can go see him if you would like," she says, mostly to Kojiro, in a kind voice. The said male's eyes brighten as he lets out a sigh of relief. He looks down at (Y/n), who confusedly looks up at him. The nurse had a calming tone in her voice when she spoke along with a smile on her face, so she assumed that Cherry was alright, but she wanted to make sure.
Kojiro nods his head as he gestures his head toward the door of Cherry's hospital room. "He's okay. We can go see him now," he tells her in English, to which she immediately gets up from the chair and runs to Cherry's room in response. As she does, she runs past the nurse like a bullet and Kojiro follows after, not running of course. The nurse smiles sweetly as she watches the two go into the room, thinking to herself, 'What a lovely family.'
Upon entering the room, (Y/n) sees Kaoru resting on the hospital bed with his head laying against a pillow. He had a cast on his arm and a bandage was neatly wrapped around his head and neck, along with a bandaid on his right cheek. Noticing her presence, the pink-haired male looks in the girl's direction, and a small smile appears on his face. "(Y/n)," he says, to which the said girl's eyes fill up with tears of joy and she rushes to him, throwing her arms around him as best as she can without hurting him.
"Cherry! You're okay!" she says out loud as she buried her face in his clothing. Kaoru's eyes soften when he hears that as he rests his hand on her head and strokes her hair with it.
"What did we say about using my skater name out in public, hm?" Kaoru tells (Y/n), but not in an angered or upset way. It was more of a teasing manner. The (h/c)-haired girl realizes her mistake as she giggles lowly to herself and looks up at Kaoru's gold eyes. "Right, I forgot. I call you Koaru outside of 'S,'" She says to him.
Kaoru nods his head as he continues to stroke the child's hair. "That's right. You are a smart girl," he praises her in a motherly tone of voice as his gaze never leaves hers. He only did when he saw Kojiro walking up to the two with a smile on his face.
"Man, you look awful," the green-haired male comments to his childhood friend. Kaoru shakes his head as he lets out a sigh before speaking. "And coming from an ape such as yourself, I'm not surprised." A smirk appears on Kojiro's face as he looks at Kaoru dead in the eyes. "And there you go talking like that. You never seem to change," he tells him.
Meanwhile, (Y/n) looks back and forth between the two with a confused look on her face as she hears their Japanese dialogue. Just by hearing the tone of their voices, she concluded that they were doing one thing: 'They're flirting with each other.' With that thought played out in her mind, a small smile forms on her face as she nods her head, agreeing with herself on that.
Everything seemed okay between the three, but their thoughts were soon cut off when they hear a knock at the doorway. They all look in the direction of the doorway and see a woman with long, dark red hair in a black formal suit.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but is this Kaoru Sakurayashiki's room?" the woman asks, to which the said male on the hospital bed nos his head. "Yes, this is. What is it that you need?" Kaoru asks her with a lifted eyebrow. "I am Inspector Kiriko Kamata. I've come here in search of--" Kiriko stops mid-sentence as she walks into the room and her eyes land on the nine-year-old girl. Her eyes widen a bit as her facial expression brightens a the sight of (Y/n).
(Y/n), on the other hand, was very confused about who this lady was and why she was looking at her like that, almost as if she recognizes the young girl. The only thing she did understand from her statement was that her name was Kiriko Kamata, but something about her being here gave her a bad vibe. To any child, seeing someone in a business suit means that there must be something important going on.
It surprised the girl even more when the inspector walked over to her and knelt down to her eye level. She spoke to her, but this time it was in English. "Hello, there. Are you (Y/n)?" The child's eyes widen when she hears that, but she still nods her head nonetheless. "Y-yes," the child responds back in the same language, which concludes to the inspector that she was, in fact, the girl she was looking for.
"Oh, that's good to hear. I'm so glad I found you," she tells (Y/n), which confuses both Kojiro and Kaoru as they hear what Inspector Kamata says. Kaoru, growing a bit protective of the situation, speaks up and asks the woman a question. "Excuse me, but why is it that you are looking for (Y/n)? Is there anything that I should be aware of?" he asks her.
Kiriko looks back at the male as she stands back up before speaking. "Yes, in fact, there is. The office has been informed that there might be a fugitive who goes by the name (Y/n) in Okinawa. I assigned myself to work on the case and found out a few interesting things about her."
(Y/n) tilts her head to the side as he wonders what the inspector is talking about. The only things she was able to understand were something about herself being in Okinawa... and that's somehow important? The girl's mind was racing at this point and needed to know more.
Kaoru, being curious himself, lifts an eyebrow as she speaks again, asking another question. "What is it that you found about her?"
"I am sure you are aware of what happens to children who are not from here when they are found without a parent or guardian," Inspector Kamata assumed, pausing for a moment before speaking again. "In her file, it does reveal that her mother, who is unknown to the system, has severely died in a car crash just a few months ago when she and her daughter moved here. Unfortunately, her father is also unknown, dead or alive, we are not sure."
Kaoru and Kojiro were both shocked to hear this sort of information coming from the inspector. They were speechless and didn't know how to respond to this. (Y/n), on the other hand, was still acting confused about what is being said. Seeing the shocked faces of the two male adults and the thought of her being involved with this made her feel a bit anxious. It made it seem like they were talking about things regarding her behind her back even though they were standing right there in front of her.
Letting out a sigh, Inspector Kamata continues. "And because of this, I'm going to have to take her back to the station with me and ask her a few questions."
(Y/n) was the first one to talk after that as her nerves were getting the best of her. "Uh, sorry, but what are you talking about? Am I in trouble?" she asks with an innocent tone of voice as she looks up at the woman. Kiriko looks down at the girl and gives her a reassuring smile. "Of course not, sweetheart. We just need to ask you some questions that have to do with your mother. I'm sure you've felt alone ever since she died but don't worry. We'll be taking you back home."
At that moment, time felt like it stopped for (Y/n) as her heart sank. Her secret... the one thing that she tried to keep hidden this entire time, has finally been revealed. She was hoping it wouldn't happen this soon, but it did. Now her heart started to pound in her chest as her eyes widen. "W-what?" Kiriko notices her tensed-up poster and tried to calm her down a bit as she spoke to her.
"It's alright. I know it's sudden, but things will get better once you return back to where you came from," she tells her, hoping to relieve some of the stress she was currently feeling. But it didn't. (Y/n) didn't think that this would happen. She remembers the day Langa told her that she would be taken away if someone was to find out that she had no one to stay with in Okinawa. Now her fear was becoming a reality.
Kojiro couldn't believe what he just heard. It was hard to believe that the (h/c)-haired girl he was close with practically had no parents this entire time without even realizing it. He was feeling many things at the moment. Confusion, disbelief, sadness, pity, etc. He didn't have the words to say what was going on in his head.
Besides that, there were so many things going on in Kaoru's head. It was the fact that (Y/n)'s mother was dead and (Y/n) was keeping that a secret this whole time, and also the fact that he felt he was somehow being a part of this case. He remembered the inspector asking if this was his hospital room and wondered how she knew to look for him as well. "I'm sorry, but you mentioned my name earlier before you walked in here. How does this involve me in this situation?" he asked, sounding curious yet cautious at the same time. His mind was only on asking that as he would save the questions for (Y/n) for later.
Kiriko looks back at Kaoru with a confused look on her face. "Sir... You were the one who called the office about this."
.
.
.
The pink-haired male was taken aback by what she said. He thought back if he ever did such a thing but couldn't remember anything related to that matter. "Since when did I...?" And at that moment, his eyes widen when he realizes something...
That night when Langa and (Y/n) raced against Adam, also the same night when he dropped (Y/n) off at the skatepark to head home, he grew suspicious when he came to the topic of the girl's parents. He remembers the conversation they had as if the whole scene of that night was being played in the back of his mind:
"Is your mother a skateboarder?"
.
"Is your father a skateboarder as well?"
"Yeah, but... h-he's no longer with me and my mom."
.
"Get home. And get some sleep."
.
'Who are you, Phoenix?'
It was after when he got home that his suspicions grew even more and wanted to know more about that girl. He came in contact with the station to find out more about her, he just didn't know that it would lead to this... With her leaving.
(Y/n) hears the two adults speak with one another until Kaoru was the one who paused. The only words she was able to understand were, "You... called..." She put two and two together and came to a sudden realization. Her eyes go wide as she slowly turns her head towards Kaoru with a look of shock and betrayal. She didn't want to believe this and hoped that she didn't hear it right, so she asked the man himself.
"K-Kaoru... You... called them?" As soon as she asked that, Kaoru breaks out of his own shocked state and looks down at the child. The only thing he felt was shame and regretfulness. He stumbled to find the words to answer but had a hard time doing so.
"(Y/n), this isn't what it sounds like. I just had the urge to find out more about you. I needed to know. But... now I know the truth," he tries to explain himself the best that he can. (Y/n)'s heart rate started to increase the more she stood there on those trembling knees. She took a step back away from the hospital bed as she tries to regain everything.
"You 'had' to? So you didn't stop to think that maybe I was keeping the truth from everyone because I was trying to save myself from leaving? I don't want to go back to my hometown! I want to stay here with you guys." (Y/n) takes a deep breath before speaking again, trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to spill from her eyes. "I actually felt happy here and thought that I could go to anyone if I needed the support. Meeting you guys helped me know what it felt like to be in a family again... But after everything that's happened so far, I don't know what to feel."
Kaoru and Kojiro could see the pain (Y/n) was feeling just by looking at her eyes. Kaoru knew he messed up and wanted to fix this, he just didn't know how. "(Y/n), I know I was foolish to have done that, but I just... I... Something about you stood out to me and I became suspicious of it."
The way he worded that last statement made (Y/n) think of the worst as her breath hitched before she spoke again. "So you never trusted me to begin with?" Everything was going too fast for her to comprehend the main point of this situation. First, it was Reki telling her those hurtful things to her about her not belonging. Then, someone was going to send her back to where she came from. And Cherry got hit in the face by a skateboard only to find out that the same man she grew close to was the reason she'll be sent back to her previous home.
The pink-haired male's eyes widen a bit after hearing (Y/n)'s question. "No no no, (Y/n). It's not like that. It's just that..." he started to say as he paused for a moment, trying to find out what else to say to the girl. The said girl saw that pause as a way for him to rethink everything that he said and made her think that he was trying to make up an excuse.
The silence was cut short though when Inspector Kamata spoke up, catching everyone in the room's attention. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but I'll have to take (Y/n) with me now." The inspector's words were not heard through the child's ears as she practically blocked off any words. At that point, she felt something she never thought she would feel. She felt as if she couldn't trust anyone she knew anymore. She felt that maybe Reki was right and that she wouldn't fit in.
Not wanting to be in this situation any long, the girl did the first thing she could think of.
.
.
.
'Run.'
The child sprinted for the door, running past the inspector and Kojiro while doing so. She picks up her skateboard that she left by the chairs outside of the room and runs down the hallway as the voices of both Kaoru and Kojiro are heard calling out to her. She tried to ignore it as she darted toward the exit of the facility until she was now outside.
She ran as if her life depended on it, blocking out anything that could be seen or heard around her. The thought of her friends coming back to her brings a tear to her eye as she thinks of what might happen to her now that she knows that an inspector is trying to take her away from the place she thought was her new home. A tear runs down her cheek, but she quickly wipes it off just as she was about to cross the street, being blinded and deaf at the moment due to many thoughts being played in her head.
'Where do I go from now?'
'Do I have to go into hiding now?'
'Can I trust anyone anymore?'
'What am I supposed to--'
Her thoughts are cut short as soon as her foot touches the asphalt of the street as the sound of tires screeching snaps her back to reality. She turns her head to the source of the sound and was met with a pair of headlights before everything turned black with her now laying unconscious on the ground. But whose car was it that hit her?

"Wasn't expecting to meet up with her like this, but this will do~"
