I was about to make my way down to the pantry to get some food until I saw Kili come out our chamber at the corner of my eye. He was wearing a tunic with his heavy coat ontop, on his feet he wore his boots and he was holding a piece of bread, no idea where he got that from but oh well.
"Morning, (Y/N)." He walked towards me and kissed me on my head. "Morning." I smiled. "I was about to head down to Lake-Town, I have a meeting with Bard, you can come with me if you like." He offered. "Yeah sure."
Suddenly, in the few seconds of silence my stomach rumbled...loudly. I felt myself go bright red, I looked up to Kili who had a small grin on his face. "Sorry, im just hungry." I awkwardly chuckled. Without hesitation Kili handed me the bread in his hand. "Here, you have it." He held it out to me.
"Oh no," I shook my head whilst pushing it away "It's yours, you have it." "Your hungry, it's yours." He shoved the bread into my hand and walked past me. "I'll get the ponies ready, meet me by the gates in 20." He called back to me. I watched as he turned the corner, I could hear the heavy footsteps of his boots as he walked down the stairs.
As I bit into the soft bread I shivered. God it's cold. I was only wearing a skirt and tunic so my arms and legs were bare, I needed to change into something warmer. I turned around to walk into our chamber as Balin came out his chamber. "Morning, lassie." Balin bowed his head. "Good morning Master Balin." I returned the bow. Balin smiled before excusing himself and making his way downstairs.
I opened my chamber door and went inside. I rummaged through my drawers to try and find some warmer clothes. I managed to find something a little less revealing so it may keep me a bit warmer, nothing a good old cape can't do.
(Y/N)'s outfit:
I put on some black tights under my outfit and slid on of my boots, which were snug and had wool inside of them. I also threw on one of my black capes, I even managed to find a pair of fingerless gloves which kept my hands nice and warm. I looked at myself in the mirror and tilted my head.
Something doesn't seem right. I looked over to my vanity where there was a dark green ribbon. I found it when i first came back, found it wrapped around Kili's hair to keep his hair off his face. I must have left it behind. I picked it off the vanity and tied a bow at the back of my head so my hair was a half up, half down, sort of look. There. That's better. I picked up my messenger bag which only had a few bits and bobs that I didn't really need but I took it with me anyway. I figured I would buy some stuff in Lake-Town with the new market up and running.
I made my way towards the end teenage of the mountain until Ori and I crossed paths. "Good morning (Y/N)." Said Ori. He held his hands in front of him and smiled with small innocent eyes. "Good morning Ori. Any plans for today?" "Well, i'm supposed to train with Nori but I...can't seem to find him." Ori looked around him with his slingshot in hand. "Oh well I do hope you find him soon. I'm going to Lake-Town with Kili, I shall see you later?"
"Of course, my lady." Ori said bowing. "So formal, master Ori." I joked, he slightly smiled and looked at his feet. "Bye, Ori." "Bye!" I placed a hand on his shoulder before continuing to walk down the stairs. On the way down I found the rest of the company sitting at a dining table, I said hello to them as I passed and they all said it back, some with food stuffed in their mouths.
I eventually was out the mountain and saw Kili standing by his pony. He was holding the reigns of his pony and another one which i'm guessing was mine. I clutched onto my messenger bag and walked across the bridge. Once his gaze met mine his face lit up and he smiled.
"You ready?" He asked handing me the reigns of my pony. "Yep." Kili held out his hand and helped me hop onto my pony, considering I was riding a pony I still struggled to climb up as it was still much larger than me. Kili climbed onto his pony and we began to ride off. We couldn't bring the ponies over the lake so we decided to take the long way, it would take us about 2 hours, possibly even more, but we didn't mind the ride as long as we had each other's company.
—————-
2 hours later:
We rode side by side and talked the whole time, we discussed plans for Lake-Town, we talked about Dain's coronation and even discussed our wedding. I am still yet to pick out a dress but I'm guessing that Dís could help me out with that. We are still not sure if we want to hold the wedding back in the Shire or in the mountain, i'm kind of leaning towards the mountain so I think that's where it's going to take place, we will also have the party in the mountain.
Due to Kili being the prince many will come to the wedding and it will be known across middle-earth so that is also another reason why we should hold it in the mountain, I don't think the hobbits back at the Shire would like it if hundreds of dwarves showed up and...well acted like dwarves, I don't think they would be too fond on that. We certainly weren't.
I could see Lake-Town come into view. It looked similar to how it once did but much grander. They even managed to link it around to the land so they had access to the forest and more food apart from fish. Everything was made out of the same wood but this time it wasn't rotting or close to snapping, the women were sitting in small circles and sowing new clothes and blankets and the men were running around with planks of wood in their arms or heaving things us by ropes.
As we rode closer I could see Bard and his children, Dain was banging a nail into the wall, Bard was doing the same behind him and Tilda and Sigrid were giggling as they read a book. I watched as the family giggled and laughed with each other as they all helped each other, I couldn't help but feel warm inside.
"We can leave the ponies here, they can eat and we will return for them in the morning." Kili said jumping off his pony. "In the morning? You didn't say we were staying overnight." "It is already the afternoon, we will be here for a while I supposed we could stay overnight and leave at sunrise, but if you wish to go back then we can do just that." "No," I hoisted myself off my pony "Tonight will be good."
"Ready?" Kili said. I nodded before we made our way closer to the town. "Good afternoon' your majesty." A women with a basket of fish in her hands said to Kili. She looked much older than me and Kili, roughly 50 in human years, she had short, curly ginger hair and had bangs under her eyes. Her outfit was made out of worn out fabrics, all different shades of green. She looked like little average hobbit.
Her eyes softened and her smile was welcoming. She faced Kili again and bowed her head. She turned to me. "My lady." She bowed her head and I did the same. She adjusted her grip on her straw basket and scurried off.
"How long will your meeting be?" I asked Kili. "A few hours unfortunately. As soon as i'm done I will come and find you. Where should I expect to find you?" Kili asked, he held out his arm and I linked mine around his. "Oh I don't know, guess you'll have to take a guess." I smirked. "Alright then, your on." He grinned, looking down at me.
We had made it into the town and we are now approaching Bard and his children. Bain was rolling some barrels into a house and Tilda was giggling in Sigrids lap who was tickling her. People were darting around and saying good afternoon to Bard as they passed. He looked like a true Master. The docks creaked as the two of us stepped on and that caught Bards attention. His head shot up but his eyes softened when he saw us. He placed the tool in his hand and approached us.
"Kili, (Y/N)," He bowed his head and turned to me "I am so glad you have come to see us again, it has been a while since our last interaction, my lady. I hope you have been enjoying your stay in the mountain."
"It's good to be back, and it's been very well in the mountain. I love what you have done with the town, it looks much better than it ever did." Bard chuckled. "It's been hard work," he said "But with a bit of help, it could be done easily. Come, it has been a while since you have seen my dear children."
"(Y/N), Sigrid, Tilda, Bain, my three beloved children. Although I do believe you have all been acquainted before." Bain bowed his head to me, Sigrid pulled Tilda off her lap and curtsied with her. They both help us their dresses, which looked new, and bowed.
"It's good to see you again, (Y/N)," Sigrid said "It has been a long time." "It has," I agreed "But nothing a big of catching up can't fix." I smiled. I felt Kili behind me as he wrapped an arm around my waist. I looked up at him. "I must leave for my meeting with Bard, I'll find you later." He kissed my head. "Okay, bye." "Bye." He took his arm away from my waist and walked off. I watched Kili as him and Bard walked down the dock until they were out of sight. I blew out a breath.
"Is it true?" I heard Tilda say, excited. She wasn't much shorter than me so I didn't have to look down at her. "Is what true?" "That your marrying Prince Kili. That your becoming a princess!" She was jumped up and down with excitement. "It is, you seem more excited than I am."
She stopped jumping and stared at me with a puzzled expression. "Are you not excited," she twirled "Oh I would love to be a princess, I would do anything to wear the pretty dresses and tiaras and live happily ever after with my prince."
"Of course I am excited. However it scares me," I sat down with her on two stools, Sigrid had left a while ago with her friend so it was just Tilda and I, I carried on "It's a big role to fulfil, I have no idea how to do it without messing up. I know absolutely nothing about being a princess."
"But everyone messes us," Tilda said "But you will learn on the job, i'm sure you'll be great at it. You were born to become a princess." I giggled at Tilda's compliment. "It's very different to my old life back in the Shire." "You lived in the Shire," She inched forward clearly interested "Ive only read about that place in books," She paused "Wait, so are you a hobbit?"
I tilted my head with confusion. "Did you not already know I was a hobbit?" "Well I don't know," she looked down and crossed her ankles, she's embarrassed to say what she wants to "I though hobbits had...well...big feet? Yours are just like mine."
I looked down at my feet. She was right, I don't have hobbit feet. I am full hobbit so I have no idea why I don't have them, maybe my mother never did, she was also a hobbit, or maybe I was, in a way, blessed without any hobbit feet. As much as I love my kin, our feet aren't the prettiest. "I wasn't born with them, it been a mystery to the whole Shire."
Tilda smiled whilst looking at my feet. But she frowned. "I wish I was a hobbit, an elf, anything but a human. It's boring." "Hey," I grabbed her hands "Your kin is amazing, never be ashamed of it. There are no cons to being human, no hobbit feet, no big elf ears, not too tall, not too short, it's the perfect kin."
"You think so?" She looked up at me with sad eyes. "I know so, never be ashamed of your kin, can you keep that promise?" She nodded. "Great," I said "Now, can you please show me the way to the market, I have a few things I need to buy." "Okay!" She grabbed my hand and pulled me "It's this way!"
She zoomed me all through the town, all the buildings around me were still made out of wood but they were larger and the designs were much better than before. Tilda pulled me and we ducked as we ran under a woman's washing line, my head just skidded a pair of trousers. However, Tilda accidentally took down a dress and knocked over the lady's washing basket.
"Hey!" She came out of her house and held her fist in the air "Come back here!" "Hurry!" I giggled, we picked up the pace and turned the next corner. With the hair running through my hair and the adrenaline of running out of trouble, I felt like a kid again. God it's been a long time since I was just a kid.
After a bit more of running we made it to the center of the town. There were stalls everywhere with baskets, fruits, fish, wood, jewellery and clothes. Perfect. I let go of Tilda's hand and turned to her. "Thanks for showing me the way, you can leave with your friends now." I gestured to three children, two girls and a boy who were hovering, I'm guessing they wanted Tilda to go play.
Tilda looked to her friends and back to me. She smiled and wrapped her arms around my waist, she pressed herself up to me and hugged me. "Your really fun (Y/N), and kind." She said but muffled by my dress.
"As are you, we should hang out more, your really fun." Tilda pulled away and waved before she ran off with her friends, giggling. Just as they were running off I heard the boy say to Tilda, "Isn't that the girls who's marrying Prince Kili?" Then they were gone. I exhaled and walked into the market.
——————
It's finally dark and i'd managed to buy only a few items such as a new book, some new boots and a new ribbon for my hair, it was a rich shade of purple and oh boy did it cost me quite a lot. Most of the town people have began to turn in for the night and have dinner, I heard some men saying that it was happy hour soon at the tavern and that his friends should come along. Seems like fun.
Kili was nowhere in sight and I haven't heard from him all day. I walked to the outskirts of the town until I found a long dock, which led to now where but the open lake, the mountain could be seen from there. I walked down the dock and sat down, kicked off my aching boots and crossed my legs under me.
I watched the gentle ripple of the lake, I watched the moon as it reflected off the water, it was a half moon but it's light was just as bright as a full moon. I could hear quiet tavern music being played from far away but everything else seemed quiet. It was so peaceful.
I took off one of my gloves and dipped my hand in the water, I was cautious not to lean too far forward so only my fingertips were under the water. The water was ice cold and it turned my fingers a very pale colour. Once my fingers felt they were about to fall off I took them out, shook the water off them, and put my glove back on.
I sat there, listening to the quiet moaning of the wind. I closed my eyes and inhaled the fresh winter air, god it's such a good feeling. My hair gently swayed in the breeze, I pushed a small strand off my face. Everything was quiet until I felt someone walking down the dock. I stayed sitting and didn't look to see who it was. I could hear the footsteps of boots approaching me and they stopped just beside me.
"I knew I would find you." I recognise the voice and looked up to see Kili. "Hey." I smiled. I looked up at him to the open spot next to me, telling him to sit. He did what I signalled and sat down next to me. He seemed exhausted, he's been working all afternoon, his eyes were struggling to stay open, he looked like he was about to pass out any second.
"I'm sorry I was gone for so long, the meeting went on much longer than I anticipated." He apologized looking out to the lake. "It's fine," I said "I had fun. I talked with Tilda, and she showed me the way to the market. I just shopped for the rest of the afternoon and came down here, I've only been here for less than ten minutes."
"Well, sounds like you've had a better day than me." He groaned from the lack of energy he had. "I can tell, your exhausted." He rubbed a hand down his face and exhaled. "I'm not surprised you can tell, I am ready to turn in for the night. Will you join me?" "Sure. Come on, help me up." I reached out my hand.
Kili pulled himself up with a groan, he grabbed my hand and pulled me up. I was about to reach down to grab my stuff which were still on the dock, but Kili swooped down and grabbed them before me. "I can carry them myself." I grinned. "I wouldn't doubt it, my One."
"That's a new one." I smiled as we walked down the dock, arms linking. "Eh, i'm trying it out. You like it?" He smirked looking down at me. "I do." "Well that's simple enough. Here," He pulled us around a corner "Our accommodation is somewhere around here." "Where are we staying?" "In the masters house, Bars has a special guest room waiting for us."
We continued to walk through the town until I could hear the tavern music again. I looked ahead and saw a large building with warm lighting shining out of the windows and lots of music and laughter could be heard. I slipped out of Kili's arm and ran forward. I pressed my face up against the glass.
The tavern was packed. Men and women were dancing to the music, most of the people who weren't dancing are holding a jug of what I think is Ale, possibly beer. There were people in the far back was a group of people playing instruments, the music was loud and could be heard all the way from the docks. It reminded me of the parties back of the Shire. God how I miss it.
The song had ended, everyone was clapping, cheering, whistling and chugging their drinks. "Do you want to go in?" I felt Kili right behind me. "No it's fine, your tried we can go another time." I began to walk away but Kili pulled me back by my hand. "Now, don't let me get in the way of you having fun. If you want to go in we can, there's no rush to get to our room." I looked from him to the door ahead. I inched open the door and walked in with Kili following behind me.
