The path was long, narrow and extremely tiring but once we made it we stopped in our tracks. My jaw fell at the beautiful view. The air was clean, fresh and the sun was setting behind the mountains where we were in a valley of waterfalls, greenery and beautiful architecture. I inhaled in the fresh air and let it fill my lungs, it was better than a crisp cold winters air. "Where are we, Gandalf?" I turned to him. "Well, in the common tongue, it's is-" "Rivendell." Bilbo finished. "It's beautiful."
I was so taken back by the land in-front of me I hadn't noticed that the dwarves had made their way down the steps made from cobble and down the mountain. "Come on, Father." I grabbed into Bilbo's arm and we held each other walking down the steep path that had a large drop that made my head slightly spin.
We had made it down to the centre, the entrance, to be greeted by a young elf. "Mithrandir!" He practically guided over to us which his hands held behind his back. "Ah, Lindir." Gandalf held out his arms. The elf said something in elvish to Gandalf which I did not quite understand. "I'm must speak with Lord Elrond, Lindir." Gandalf said. "My Lord Elrond is not here." "Not here? Where is he?"
A horn in the distance blew and elves on horses were approaching us. All of the dwarves formed a circle and pushed Bilbo and I into the middle. I could barely see over everyone's head, but all I could see was horses galloping circles around us. "Gandalf." An elf with long black hair and a beautiful head piece with amour was riding a different horse from the others. This must be Lord Elrond.
"My Lord Elrond." Gandalf bowed his head. They began speaking in elvish again so I didn't understand. But I believe it was a greeting as the two embraced each other in a hug. "Strange for Orcs to come so close to our borders." Lord Elrond began to speak in english again. "Something or someone has drawn them near." He continued. "Ah, that may have been us."
Gandalf with his staff gestured to us. Thorin stepped forward. "Welcome, Thorin, son of Thrain." Elrond welcomed Thorin to his land. "I do not believe we have met." Thorin frowned. "You have your grandfathers bearings. I knew Thror when he ruled under the mountain." "Indeed, he made no mention of you." He looked the Elf Lord up and down.Would it hurt Thorin to be kind?
Lord Elrond said something in elvish to Gandalf whilst keeping eye-contact with Thorin. Then Gloin began to pipe up. "What is he sayin'? Does he offer us insult?" Noise erupted from the dwarves but Gandalf stopped them. "No, Master Gloin. He's offering you food." All of the dwarves came together and mumbled between each other if we should trust the elf-lord. We came to an agreement. "Well in that case, lead on."
We were led throughout Rivendell by Lord Elrond and other elves who's beauty was nothing like i've ever seen, both man and woman. I admired the kingdom around me. The calming sound of the waterfalls and the chirping of the birds, I could hear the harp being played from a platform not far from us. The golden colours in the sky and the gentle breeze gave me a warm feeling inside, the land was breathtaking and there was no doubt about it. It was like I was in a dream.
We were brought to this long dining table which was filled with food. The elf-maidens wore the most graceful dresses and played the most calming instruments. The sounds of the harp and flute filled my ears with delight. "Please, all of you sit down and eat." I sat on the long bench next to Bilbo. The table was perfect for our size, and they even had little stools with fancy, blue cushions prepared for us, it concerned me why they had these on standby.
" I don't know about you, Father but I am starving." Me and Bilbo laid down the silk cloths on our laps, the other dwarves did not. I don't know what I expected. But none of us waited around before we tucked into our food and enjoyed the elvish food that i've never tasted before.
—————
"Go on, just try it." Dori was trying to convince Ori to eat the vegetable in his hand. "I don't like green foods." He frowned. Ori sat there like a child being forced to eat the vegetables on his dinner plate. Dwalin was digging his hand around in a salad. "Where's the meat?" Bilbo and I were happy with the food we had so we didn't complain. Some of the dwarves ate their food but many didn't.
The dwarves began to create noise as they hated the music. Oin stuffed a cloth into his ear thing that coincidentally helped him to hear anything. "I feel like i'm at a funeral." Nori said. Bofur then thought it was a good idea to stand up on the table and sing a good old, cheerful song. All of the dwarves tuned in and then began throwing food at each other. A piece of food just missed Lord Elrond's head, hitting his "throne chair". Well that escalated quickly.
All of the elves looked at each other concerned. But the dwarves, including myself, sang along, cheered and smashed our fists on the table creating a beat to his song. Laughter erupted once the song was finished, Bofur climbed back into his chair leaving a smile on everyone's face, well, all but the elves who clearly didn't like our loud singing and the loud noises we made.
"I'm done. Would you like to come on a walk with me, Father?" I asked, wiping my mouth if my napkin "I would love too." As Bilbo stood up from the bench he accidentally bashed his knee under the table. "Ow!" "Oh my God. I can't take you anywhere." We both chuckled as we walked down the stairs onto a long bridge where we were alone.
We were walking side by side. It was quiet, the only noise's were the birds singing and the gentle breeze flowing through our hair. It's what the two of us enjoy most, each other's company yet quiet to gather our thoughts. "God, this place is just breathtaking." I said looking at the sunset over the border of hills. Bilbo didn't respond to me."Father?" "(Y/N)." "What is it?" I asked concerned at his quick change of tone. "Do you..." he paused "Do you ever miss The Shire? Home?"
I wasn't prepared for that question. I had to think before I answered. "Well, I guess. But I love it out here. Obviously I miss home, our books, food and my bed. But I love seeing all these new places and meeting these new people. I love the dwarves and I know you do too." "That is exactly how I would explain it. But, the thing is I just-" He couldn't finish what he was saying.
"You just, what?" I pushed for the answer. "I just...I just don't feel like I belong here, with the company." I looked him in his eyes. "Of course you belong. We both belong here." "No- you have Kili and- and I don't have anyone." "You have me. You have me, Father. Why on earth would you think that?" Tears pricked at my eyes. I broke me to think that my own father felt like he didn't belong.
"Well I guess your right. Look, i'm sorry. I didn't mean to ruin our walk." I laughed and a tear fell from my left eye. "You didn't ruin it. I love you, father." "I love you too, (Y/N)." He said whilst brushing my tear off my cheek. "Come on, (Y/N). Let's go back." "Okay." I sniffled.
By the time we made it back the moon had come up and the stars were shining in the sky. The dwarves were sitting in a lounge on a balcony with a small fire pit. Bombur was sitting on a chair stuffing different meats into his mouth and Kili was laying on a comfy bench, smoking his pipe. "I'm going to go sit next with Kili." "Okay." Bilbo grinned. "What?" "Nothing." He said almost too quick. "Father?" "Yes." He stuck his chin in the air and put his hands behind his back. ".....nevermind." "Okay." He rocked on his feet as I walked off confused. Weird.
"Hi." I sat on the edge of the bench. "Heyyy. Where did you go? I couldn't find you after supper." He lifted his head from where it was back and resting with closed eyes. "Oh yeah don't worry I just went on a walk with, Father." "Ah." I was so far off the bench I almost slipped off. "Here." Kili sat up leaving my enough room to sit next to him. "Thanks."
I rested my hands on my lap. The night was cold but the candles next to me warmed up the left side of my face. A shiver went up my spine."Your cold." Kili told me. "No i'm fine." I fanned my hand down. However, I was not prepared as Kili wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me up close to him. I was pressed up against his chest. "Would you like my coat?" "Oh my God, no i'm fine. Honestly."
I tried to stop him but he took off his coat and put it on me. It was much larger than me so I was just drowning in furs and fabrics. "It's a bit big." I chuckled holding up the way too long sleeves. Kili laughed. "Nah it's fine." I couldn't help but smile as his arm remained around my shoulder, I was nervous to see everyone's reaction but no one seemed to notice.
From below us Bofur had a sausage in his hand, debating something. Then he made his choice. "Hey Bombur!" Bofur threw a sausage at Bombur, which he caught. The chair creaked under him and then collapsed, everyone erupted into a huge laughter. Tears were falling from our eyes, my chest hurt I was laughing so hard and I bet the rest felt the same. Even Bombur himself was laughing from where he was lying on the floor on-top of a snapped wooden stool.

We were all having small conversations with each other whilst watching the night sky and the crackles of the fire. I watched as an ember rose out the fire and into the sky disappearing into the starry blanket laid over us. I could hear the waterfall in the background and the trickling of water down the stream. The familiar sounds of the river reminded me of the nights in the Shire, not a single noise. It seems the dwarves do have their wind down time which reminds me all too well of home.
"I love it here." I, in some way, said to Kili. "Do you?" He turned to me still with an arm slung over my shoulder, keeping me warm. "Yeah." I smiled. I was digging around in my pocket until I pulled out my Rosa Peace which I bought the day we met Gandalf, and later on the company. "What's that?" Kili asked. "It's my flower. A rosa peace."
"It's beautiful." He said looking at me. I twirled the flower in my fingers by the stem and admired it and it's vibrant colours. "I buy it from the market on the third day of the week, each week." "Just one each week? What's the point? You can just buy them in bunches." Is what everyone says to me.
"Why buy them all in one go when I can have an excuse to go back every week to buy another. I know it's stupid, i feel stupid when people ask and I tell them that." I always feel silly when I say this. He gently took the flower out my hand and too admired it. "I don't know why you think it's stupid. Ive never really had a favourite flower." "Never?!" I was shocked. "I'm sorry!" He gave me back the flower whilst shrugging.
"But you literally travel the world! Have you not seen at least one flower that you loved?" He just shrugged. I turned back to the fire and reached my hands out so they could warm up "Chrysanthemum." He said. "What?" I angled my head at him. "It was my mothers favourite flower." Was. I suddenly felt rude even though I didn't say anything.
"Oh...is your mother still with us?" I looked down at my hands in my lap. "Oh yes! She is still with us, I love her to bits. I promised her I would come back home, and I'm going to keep that promise." "That's sweet." I slightly smiled. The fire warmed up my face and made it glow an yellow colour, however the pink quickly overpowered it.
"What about your mother?" He accidentally made the mistake of asking. "I've never met her." I shrugged. I'm not really that bothered that I never met her, it doesn't affect me, but when people ask I suddenly realize what I'm missing out on. He awkwardly brought the pipe to his mouth and blew the smoke out his mouth, clearly embarrassed "Oh...i'm sorry."
"Oh no! I'm not bothered, yeah I would have wished to have met her but...but it's fine." I fiddled with the stem of my flower. All of the dwarves were making their way to our sleeping chambers for the night. "Come on, let me bring you up to your chamber." Kili stood up and looked down at me. "No, its fine." I tried to walk away but he pulled me back by my hand which made my eyebrows fly up. He's holding my hand.
"Please let me." He looked up at me, how could I say no to him? "Okay," I said "You can walk me to my room." He followed my gaze to our hands holding each other, my face dropped when he released my hand thinking he made a mistake. But it wasn't.
"Kili, (Y/N)," Thorin approached us "We are leaving at dawn. Be ready. Goodnight." "Goodnight." Kili and I said at the same time. Kili brought me up to my chamber. I got changed into a pearl coloured, silk robe that the elves gave to me and fell into a deep sleep. I've never done this much walking in my whole life.
