[2 Years Later..]
"Papa!" A little boy with wavy light brown hair and almond-shaped dark brown eyes, dressed in nothing but a diaper ran towards the front door as Kaito walked into the apartment. He smiled at the child and kneeled to the boy's height.
"Hey, buddy!" Kaito reached one arm out and pulled the child into his arms. The toddler grabbed onto a small paper bag that Kaito was carrying, but Kaito snatched it away before it would be torn.
Inside the bag were cookies he got from the Cafe. Often, he brought some home for his son and Samantha. But it seemed like Samantha wasn't here. It was very quiet, although he knew she was somewhere in the apartment. "Where's mommy, Keiji?"
Keiji ignored him and reached for the paper bag again. Kaito sighed, realizing that Keiji wasn't going to listen until he got a cookie. Kaito scooped him up in one arm and placed the bag on the kitchen counter. Then he placed the car keys, of a car he finally bought for himself on a rack that hung by the entrance of their apartment building.
He took his shoes off and walked into the living room, only to find Samantha sprawled across the couch in a deep sleep. He chuckled and playfully brushed his hand over Keiji's hair. "You've tired her out." He raised Keiji and smelled him before scrunching up his nose. "You need a diaper change too."
He glanced at the time on the clock and hovered over Samantha's body. It was 7 PM, and yet there was no dinner on the stove or anything for him when he got back. Kaito thought about ordering delivery food, but he didn't want Samantha to complain about him wasting his money.
He leaned over and pressed his lips against her cheek, and her eyes flicked open. Then she jolted up as if she forgot something and stared into the air. "Oh god... how long was I out for?" She whined.
"You tell me. I just got here." Kaito snorted in response.
"What time is it?" Samantha rubbed her eyes and yawned. "After 7? Shite, I forgot to make some dinner. I'm so sorry, Leo." She grumbled and pushed herself off of the couch. "I picked him up from daycare after work and I was just so tired."
"It's okay, I'll just go pick something up from the store, or order delivery if you're okay with it," Kaito suggested.
"Might as well. I'm not going back to that kitchen tonight. After Keiji eats and I bathe him, I'm going straight to bed."
"I brought some cookies from the shop today." Kaito hummed and placed Keiji down. He pulled out his phone from his pocket to make an order at the nearest fast-food chain while Samantha rushed into the kitchen and came back with a cookie in her hand.
"Correction." She giggled. "That was officially my last trip to the kitchen tonight." She took a large bite out of the soft chocolate chip delicacy. Kaito leaned over and took a smaller bite too, and the look on Samantha's face made him laugh. "If you wanted a piece you could've gotten your own!"
"I like taking a piece of yours though. It always tastes sweeter."
"Your cheesiness is starting to get old." Samantha rolled her eyes at him, and Kaito's face turned serious. Was she saying she didn't like him being a sappy husband anymore? He studied her expression for a while longer, but when she smiled at him, he relaxed. "You're cute though. What did you order?"
"Pizza."
"Ugh, no why?" Samantha frowned. "You should've asked me what I wanted."
"I got you some breadsticks and a deep dish. Relax." He kissed her forehead.
"What did you get for the baby?"
"He'll share the pizza with me, right Keiji?" Keiji jumped and down at his voice and smiled wide. Kaito felt his phone buzz so he took it out to see who was calling. It was Wilson.
"You know, I was thinking.." Samantha scooped Keiji into her arms, bringing Kaito's attention away from his phone. "Maybe you should start teaching him your native language. I want to travel to Japan someday."
No, you don't. Not with this guy, Kaito thought. He was still a wanted criminal back in Japan. Although some of the stations knew of his undercover work with Haruka, there were still Yakuza families there that wouldn't be too happy if they found out.
"I have to take this call, Sam." He smiled at her and she nodded at him. He excused himself to the bathroom and answered the call after shutting the door behind him. "Yes, Wilson?"
"What's up Leo?" Wilson chortled.
"Cut the crap and tell me why you called." Kaito huffed.
"I can't even check on a friend to see how he and his family are doing? How's the little squirt of yours, huh? Does he miss his uncle Wilson?" Kaito rolled his eyes and remained silent. Wilson cleared his throat awkwardly. "Sheesh! You're a tough audience to crack a joke at. Anyways, I've been searching for the exact type of USB drive that fits in that empty case you found, and I've finally come across some images that look like it!"
"Go on."
"The flash drive that matches the case is extremely expensive. There are only 10 designs just like it, so I don't think Oliver the Publisher was the one who owned it originally. It has to be someone who helps run the company or someone who partners with them."
"Do you think it could've been owned by one of the managers?"
"Perhaps." Wilson coughed and cleared his throat. "8 of the designs are in the hands of certain people across the world. 2 were sold in auctions. I could look up who the buyers were to see if we could get a clue if you'd like?"
Before Kaito could respond, there was a knock on the door. He opened it slightly with his phone still pressed against his ear. It was Samantha, and she was smiling nervously. "Honey, do you have any cash? I can't find my wallet and the delivery guy is here."
Kaito fumbled through his pockets and pulled out his wallet. He opened it and handed her some money. Samantha counted it and tilted her head at him. "This isn't enough for a tip."
"Kaito, you still there?"
"Shite, hold on." He snapped at Wilson on the phone.
"Excuse me?" Samantha narrowed her eyes at him.
"Here, tell him to keep the change." He shoved a wad of cash into her arms and began to close the door, but Samantha stopped him.
"This is too much money to be giving out like that, Leo." She fumed. "I hope you don't waste this much money daily, we can't afford that. We're still paying off your car—"
"Just take what you think is suitable for a tip and give the rest back, I'm on the phone." He hissed but caught himself. "Crap, I didn't mean it like that. I'm sorry, love you." He tapped her on the shoulder and nudged her away from the door gently before shutting it.
"You love me?" Wilson laughed on the other line.
"Listen you piece of filth, don't test me. My mood is not getting any better. Go ahead and search for those buyers. We need all the information we can get—" The knob to the bathroom door opened and Kaito groaned. It was Keiji, and he was trying to get in. "Keiji, go back to Mommy." He grumbled.
Wilson was laughing so hard he could hear the echo bouncing off the walls.
"Papa!" Keiji whined.
Kaito nudged his son out of the bathroom with his foot, and Keiji whined even louder. "No, don't cry, go back to Mom."
"Should I call you back, you seem busy." Wilson snorted.
"Don't bother. Do what I said." Kaito snapped and hung up. He opened the door completely and grabbed onto a Keiji. "You're so clingy." Kaito glared at the boy, who only wrapped his arms around his neck in return.
The family of 3 ate together and after finishing their meal, Samantha went to go bathe Keiji and put him in some new clothes. After about two to three hours, everyone had settled in bed. Kaito had waited for Samantha to fall asleep.
When he heard her breathing soften, he slowly uncovered himself and made sure she was tucked in properly. Then he reached for the drawer of the nightstand and pulled out his hidden pack of cigarettes. It had been a while since he'd smoked, it was a habit he knew he should break.
The night was the best time for him to get away from the two to think. He crept past the crib slowly, so he wouldn't accidentally wake Keiji and left the bedroom. He snatched his cellphone off the dresser in the living room and dialed Haruka's number.
It rang a few times but went straight to voicemail. He groaned and paced for a while. Haruka had been harder to reach ever since he's been assigned other cases. Katashi had been missing for a long time, so Haruka told him that the case would be dropped if they didn't find any evidence of Asuka's presence.
Usually, it wouldn't have taken him this long to find him, but someone was helping Asuka very well. He was in hiding. It seemed that while he was hard to search for, there was constantly always something happening in Cartersville that directed the attention off of that Yakuza boss.
The Watanabe family was very influential, so Kaito strongly felt that whoever that imposter was, they were pushing all the recent murders on him purposefully. He wanted to find the imposter, but as of recently, things have gone quiet.
Kaito groaned and pulled a cigarette out of his pocket. He reached for the front door, but a knock on the door stopped him. He stiffened and blinked at the door. Who the heck was visiting so late at night?
He opened the door slowly and peeked out the crack. It was Nina, that detective who was a part of Haruka's team. He relaxed and stepped out of the apartment. Nina rolled her eyes when she saw the cigarette poking out from his lips.
"You still haven't gotten rid of that bad habit, I see." She fumed.
"I will eventually," Kaito replied with a sly smile. He was planning on it, for the sake of his child. Kaito could care less for the whole family arrangement, but children were people he wouldn't want to cause harm to. "What brings you here so late?"
Nina handed a sheet of paper with squiggly lines on it. He took it and studied the sheet. It appeared to be a record of a polygraph, a lie detector test. Kaito raised his head back up to look at Nina. "What's this?"
"Haruka is in Japan right now." Nina coughed lightly. The air outside was very cold, it was almost wintertime.
"What?" Kaito clenched his jaw. He wondered why Haruka was across the world when he was supposed to be solving cases here. That's what he thought at least.
"He knows you've been trying to reach him. But he decided to go to Japan to conduct some additional investigative methods to find out where Asuka is. But in the end, what we found was quite unexpected."
"You don't think Asuka went back to Japan, do you?" Kaito gritted his teeth.
"We don't think so. But during the investigation, Haruka visited your mother. Hana has been acting very suspicious lately."
Kaito balled his fists angrily. His mother was a sensitive topic for him. The fact that his father even went back to Japan to confront her made him livid. Nina felt the change in mood from Kaito. He leaned against the railing of the stairs and lit his cigarette. She knew if she didn't choose her next words carefully, Kaito would probably kill her then and there.
Kaito brushed a hand through his hair and took a deep and long breath.
"He told her they wanted to ask a few questions for the investigating, and he noticed that she was stuttering. So he asked her to take a polygraph test."
"These are her results?" Kaito looked at the sheet again, and Nina nodded in reply. "What the bloody murder did he ask her?"
"We think she knows where Katashi went." Nina crossed her arms. "Did your brother ever travel outside of the country often?"
"He went to New York once." Kaito stared at the paper intently. "I doubt he would've run away to another country. If Asuka has anything to do with my brother's disappearance, the Watanabe clan would be keeping him, hostage, in Japan, awaiting their boss's command."
He reached for his lighter and lit the paper on fire. Nina frowned at him.
"What the heck are you doing!?" She hissed and tried snatching the paper away, but Kaito held it high so she couldn't reach it.
"I'm sure you have copies." Kaito snorted.
"Your brother's passport is missing, Kaito—"
"You tell that dastard to stay away from my mother." Kaito snapped at her. He snatched her up by the collar of her shirt and held the lighter close to her face. "You know I'm a crazy man, right? I won't hesitate to kill you."
Nina smirked at him. "Your threats don't work on me.." She snickered. "Kill me, do it. I'll scream and wake your wife, she will find out who you are the moment you set me aflame."
Kaito shoved her away angrily.
"You've gone soft, Kaito." She tapped his shoulder arrogantly. He didn't. She didn't realize that Kaito didn't kill women or children.
"Relay the message to Haruka. My mother has nothing to do with the case." Kaito barked. "Let her live happily and in peace while she still can."
"I will. Oh, and one more thing," Nina fixed the shirt on Kaito. "He wants to see his grandchild."
"He didn't want anything to do with him at first, and now he suddenly wants to meet Keiji?" Kaito laughed. "I'll consider it." Kaito was more than livid. He was craving for Haruka's blood to spill. Of course, by saying he'd consider letting Haruka meet his son, he was meaning that it'd never happen.
He trusted Haruka for business purposes, but when it comes to family situations, nothing could repair their relationship. The word father was just a title to Kaito, nothing more.
"Great. Then my work here is done. Stop smoking and get some rest. It's cold out here."
"I'll do whatever I please."
