Kaito nudged Samantha roughly and she jolted awake. Samantha stared at him briefly and sat up. The plane had landed, and it was time for them to go. Kaito reached up for the top compartment and grabbed his backpack. Then he reached in his pocket and pulled out two face masks.
"Put this on. The air here is thick." He handed one to Samantha. She hesitated for a moment because she thought that he was probably hiding from someone now that there were in his country. She took it and placed the mask strings behind her ears and fixed it so it would fit well on her.
The two got off the plane and Samantha was overwhelmed by seeing so many Asian people walking around inside the airport. Everyone spoke in Japanese and she felt completely lost. Kaito stopped walking and placed the backpack on the ground before unzipping it.
Inside of it was full of winter clothes. Scarves, hats, gloves, and there was even one of Samantha's coats that she thought she left back in Cartersville.
He stood back up and placed a scarf around Samantha's neck and a hat on her head. Samantha stopped him when he handed her the coat because she noticed several people around her stop to stare.
"They keep looking at me."
"I know." Kaito snorted. "You're a foreigner. They won't stop looking, so let them." He shrugged and placed a hat on his head.
When they both settled, the two went through the airport. Kaito grabbed the rest of their bags at the entrance and texted Haruka that they had arrived. He also texted Wilson to let him know that Samantha was with him.
Samantha followed Kaito because she was completely confused at everything happening around her. She realized that she needed to get out more. Wherever they were in Japan was a lot more different than back in America. Cartersville wasn't as busy, and it made her feel uneasy.
"Where exactly are we?"
"Osaka," Kaito replied nonchalantly and walked towards the exit with their things. She walked outside and a wave of cold air almost pierced her skin. It was snowing outside. The weather was unfamiliar to Samantha, so much so that she slipped on ice as she walked over to the cab that Kaito was packing their things into.
"Kaito!" She screeched and fell into the snow. A few Japanese people eyed her cautiously when she tried standing on her feet only to slip and fall again. Kaito tried his best to hide his smile. Watching her flop around like a penguin was too comical.
He walked over to her and grabbed onto her from behind before helping her back onto her feet. She was breathing very heavily and clutching onto him. "Don't let me go." She huffed.
"You can walk to the car, Samantha." Kaito rolled his eyes and yanked his hand away from her. Samantha felt her heart sink and she carefully took large footsteps over to the cab. The two hopped in and they were off to where ever Kaito had planned.
"Koko made onegai shimasu." Kaito handed the cab driver a slip of paper. It seemed like the man driving knew who Kaito was. His shoulders tensed and he responded slowly before pulling out of the airport.
"What did you tell him?"
"Don't worry about it, sweetheart." Kaito poked her forehead away from him. She groaned and slapped his hand away, which only earned her a nasty look from Kaito. "You're gonna learn to respect me. Japanese women are meeker than you are."
"Then go somewhere and find a Japanese woman to play around with. Kidnap her and drag her across the world." Samantha responded harshly. "I'm only doing this for my son."
"Our son. He is both of ours."
"But you want to kill him."
"So what if I do?" Kaito smirked at her, and she stopped talking. He was out of his mind, she acknowledged that. She just wanted to get to their location and get to Keiji until she could find help.
The quiet satisfied Kaito. It made the time go by quicker.
The driver pulled into a very nice-looking neighborhood with 4 tall buildings neatly placed across from each other. It was fenced off and the front doors of each building were guarded. Kaito knew that some of them were cops that Haruka assigned to guard his apartment.
He also knew it was for Haruka to make sure that he didn't revert back to Assassinating and working with the Yakuza again.
The cab pulled up to the entrance, and Kaito handed the cab some cash. Samantha was surprised to see that he had Japanese currency on him ready to use whenever it was needed. Kaito muttered something to the driver and he nodded and bowed his head in response.
Samantha observed the tall building in amazement. She knew that this side of the city was a richer area just by looking at her environment. She began to suspect that Kaito was able to afford this place because of the income he received from handling his jobs.
It made her shudder to think that all this was earned by taking the lives of others.
Kaito uttered a greeting to the security guards at the entrance without a bow. They looked at him in surprise as he sauntered in without showing them the proper respect. Kaito didn't care though. He viewed them as pets hired by Haruka. They were his watchdogs, only there to prevent Samantha from roaming around freely, and to report Kaito's doings.
Samantha jogged after Kaito and waved awkwardly at the guards. They watched her, and she felt her chest tighten at their lack of expression. Samantha was from another country but she knew that Japanese people bowed to show respect.
Her action was awkward because she didn't know how to greet them in Japanese properly. She knew how to say thank you from watching anime, but that's about all she could remember.
She brushed off some snow from her coat and ran inside the building and stopped at Kaito's side. The two were in front of an elevator.
A woman approached Samantha while Kaito pushed one of the buttons and began angrily motioning at her. She didn't understand what was said, but it seemed like she was distressed about something.
Kaito narrowed his eyes at the woman and spoke to her. "Kanojowa watashino tsumadesu."
"Okusan'?" The lady pointed at Samantha and looked her up and down. The lady's eyes shone with disgust.
"Hai." Kaito rolled his eyes and placed his arm over Samantha's shoulder.
"Oh!" The lady bowed her head in response. "Gomen'nasai!" She shot another dirty look at Samantha before stepping away and sashaying in the opposite direction.
Samantha whipped her eyes to Kaito as he dragged her inside the elevator. "What just happened? What did you guys talk about?"
"Jealous?" Kaito smirked.
"I'm wondering if you threatened her. She looked like she recognized you."
"It's the landlord." Kaito scoffed. "She said there were no foreigners allowed here, but I explained to her you are my wife."
"Am I?" Samantha crossed her arms.
"Yes, you are." Kaito hissed. He didn't like the sound of it, but it was the truth.
"I married Leo Takemi. Not Kaito Takashi."
"You married me and called me by that name, but on our marriage papers, my real name is there," Kaito grumbled. "Believe it or not, our marriage was legal. I didn't write a fake name on a legal document. I'm a lot smarter than you give me credit for."
"You're insane," Samantha murmured. "I don't know what you plan on doing with Keiji and me, but I hope you will gather some divorce papers soon."
"I hear you." Kaito snickered at her. He stopped in front of a door and pressed a few buttons on the locked keypad. Fortunately, Wilson didn't screw around with the passcode and it was kept the same. The lock flashed a green light and Kaito urged Samantha inside before closing the door behind them.
He shoved their suitcases to the side and brushed his hands together.
Samantha studied the room and was amazed at how much space there was in the apartment. The living room was very modern themed with black and gray furniture. And there were large windows all around the wall so enough light could be let in. On the right were the dining room and kitchen, both very traditional with dark furniture and cabinets.
But as she observed everything inside the first few rooms, she noticed a doorway that exposed the bedroom and master bathroom. But Keiji wasn't there. She turned on her heel and faced Kaito. "Where is Keiji?"
"You don't have to worry about that," Kaito responded harshly and shoved past her.
"What?" Samantha coughed. "You told me that you'd keep him safe if I traveled with you!"
"I said his life depends on your choice to travel." Kaito corrected her. "I never said Keiji was here."
"Where is my son!?" Samantha grabbed Kaito by his shoulder and snarled at him. "What did you do with my baby!" Her voice began to crack as realization hit her that her son was being held hostage by this assassin.
"I advise you to let me go." Kaito slapped her hands off of him. "Behave."
"I've done everything you asked me to! I came here willingly! I even lied to an officer!" Samantha hiccuped. "TELL ME WHERE KEIJI IS!" She nudged him back and sobbed.
"If you keep this up, you won't ever see him again." Kaito snapped at her.
"Why are you doing this?" She huffed. "If I swear that I won't tell anyone who you are, will you let me go? I will swear it on my parent's grave! Just let me and Keiji live on our own in peace!"
"I don't trust you." Kaito leaned forward. His face was dangerously close to hers. The hurt in her face made his heart stir, but he ignored the feeling.
~
Kaito took out a box of cigarettes and pulled one out to light. He leaned against the front wall of the police station, unbothered by the cold chilling air around him. He was there to meet Haruka, and if things went according to plan, he'd be out of the winter weather's way sooner.
A silver sedan parked in front of the building, and a faint smirk appeared on Kaito's lips. He couldn't believe that Haruka still owned that run-down 90s automobile. He put a cigarette to his lips and let out a puff of smoke as Haruka gathered his bearings and sauntered towards him.
"What did I tell you about that bad habit?" Haruka stood directly in front of Kaito. In order to prevent the other officers from understanding their conversation, he chose to speak in English. He shoved his hands into his coat pocket and narrowed his eyes.
"I'll quit when I want to." Kaito shrugged in response. He didn't give a crap about Haruka's opinion on him smoking. He'd been doing it for so many years already.
"Where is Samantha?" Haruka shifted his head left to right in search of Kaito's wife, but she wasn't anywhere around.
"She's at my apartment."
"Why didn't you bring her?"
"Why would I?" Kaito scoffed. "She doesn't know about you or my involvement with the authorities. I don't plan on telling her, or our mission will be compromised. She has a big mouth, you know?" Kaito licked his lips and sighed.
"So, you locked her up in your apartment?"
"She's not locked away." Kaito shook his head. "She's able to roam around freely. I just threatened her a little so she'll know to stay put."
Haruka didn't understand why Kaito didn't just tell Samantha the truth, about him working undercover. To him, it seemed easier if she understood that Kaito wasn't a crazed criminal ready you attack her at any moment.
But Kaito had his intentions based on the fact that Samantha was a liability ever since he stepped foot back into Japan. If she knew he was working for the authorities, the Yakuza would most likely find out through her. Osaka wasn't exactly a safe haven for him, especially for her.
The Yakuza respected Kaito, but that didn't mean he didn't have any enemies that lurked around to gain intel on him. He didn't want to put Samantha or Keiji through that risk. So it was better that she believed he was a lethal Assassin, just until he found his younger brother.
"Asuka is in Japan now."
"We know." Haruka nodded. "There have been some detectives on his case the moment he returned."
"Have you been assigned elsewhere?"
"I'm only in charge of finding your brother, Katashi." Haruka shrugged. "Things are quite heated at the station because of that dastard. Heard that he's been smuggling again."
"I'm going to meet with him." Kaito shrugged. "If you tell me where those detectives are camped, I'll be able to have a discussion with him." Kaito only asked because he knew that Asuka wouldn't be hiding in his usual spots.
Asuka relied on popular traditional restaurants to cover his business. The whole reason why Kaito was caught by Haruka and arrested in the first place was that he was deceived into handling a target for Asuka at a restaurant.
Haruka sighed and turned to look at the busy road across from them. "I think they went to the club next to Teppan."
"Teppan?" Kaito clicked his tongue and put out his cigarette. "He's conducting underground again." Kaito chuckled. "This time using a drunkard's haven to cover his dirty work."
"Make sure not to get caught," Haruka mumbled. "And don't kill anyone."
"Don't worry about me." Kaito threw his used cigarette aside and stomped on it. He took a step in the opposite direction of where Haruka was looking off into.
"Kaito, Teppan is that way." Haruka pointed to his left, completely puzzled by Kaito's action.
"I know." Kaito pointed at a nearby barber shop and then to his long hair. "I let it grow out while in prison. I think it's time for a change." Kaito continued to walk away.
