"Kaito!" Samantha got the call from Wilson and Haruka that they found Kaito's younger brother and that he was sent to the hospital. When Haruka told her that Kaito was at the station, she assumed that he was probably hurt or did something crazy. It was still in the middle of the night, so Samantha had left Keiji behind with his grandmother while she quickly traveled to the station. With the help of Haruka's translation and some pocket money that Hana gave her, she was able to get to the Police station in 10 minutes by bus.
When she arrived, she saw her husband sitting in front of a desk surrounded by Cops and detectives casually. She barged in and rushed inside when she caught a glimpse of Haruka standing next to Kaito. "KAITO!" She heaved and sprinted forward.
Kaito turned his head and his eyes widened in surprise when he saw her. "Samantha? What are you—"
"Are you hurt? Are you okay?" She stopped in front of him and examined his ruffled appearance. His hair was a mess and he had a black eye. There were scratches on his face and a cut on his lip. "Your face! You're hurt!" Samantha grabbed Kaito by the sides of his head and pulled him closer so she could get a better look.
"Samantha!" He groaned. "I'm fine—"
"What happened to your arm!" She gasped and tugged him forward.
"I got beat up a little." He shrugged.
"A little?!" She whined. "You have cuts all over your face Kaito! You look like you were in a fight with an army of men!"
"It's nothing I can't handle on my own, Sam." He hushed her. "Everything is okay. I'm okay."
Samantha didn't trust his words, but she gave in and let out a relieved sigh. Then she wrapped her arms around his neck and stood on her toes to engulf him in a tight hug. Kaito responded by allowing her to hug him and took in her scent. She smelled fresh as if she just come out of the shower, and it comforted him to know that she was safe. He felt bad that she came all the way to see him like this in the night.
The detectives and cops around them awkwardly stared at the two. They couldn't believe that the Assassin before them had a woman clinging to him. Kaito noticed their stares and his face heated up. Samantha pulled away suddenly and glanced at his handcuffs. "Wait a minute, but why did they arrest you?"
"Because he's still Japan's most wanted Assassin." Haruka stepped forward with two cups of coffee in his hands. He sipped on one and handed the other to her.
"But what did he do?" Samantha snapped at him and eyed the cup in his hands scornfully. "Kaito did what you asked for him to do. He helped you solve your case. Wasn't he supposed to get a reduced sentence or something?"
Haruka sighed and forced the coffee cup into her hand. He walked over to his desk and sat in front of them. "If I can get a good lawyer for him, maybe he will get a reduced sentence. That all depends on the Supreme Court of Japan."
"What? But you promised him!" Samantha growled.
"Hey, don't get worked up." Kaito nudged her with his arm. "The deal I made with him never guaranteed the shorter sentence. I just didn't want to be executed."
"I can't just give out shorter sentences Samantha, I'm a detective, I'm not a judge."
"Is there something else you can do?" Samantha frowned. She didn't want to admit it, but she didn't want Kaito to be separated from her so quickly. He would go back to prison, but that would mean she'd have to raise Keiji all by herself. She wanted Keiji to see his father more. "Anything at all?"
"I can't do anything as of now." Haruka shook his head. "I called you here so you could see Kaito one last time before he's transported back to Queenstown. I'll be the one to help you and Keiji get back to the states."
"You... you can't! You can't take Kaito away now! What about his family Haruka? What about Keiji? Do you know how hurt he will be when he finds out that he can't see Kaito?" The last sentence came out as a sob.
"Samantha." Kaito grabbed onto her hand. "It's going to be okay."
"No! It's not!" Samantha cried. "You have a son who adores you, and a wife that loves you! Why are you okay with this?"
"I understand how you feel, but this is the law, Sam." Kaito sneered at her. "You already knew that I was going to go back to prison, so why are you acting like this now? I don't want to go either, but I already told you that I'd make sure Keiji and you are taken care of while I'm gone."
"Taking care of our financial problems is different from being there for your son Kaito!" She whined.
The two stopped their arguing when they heard a laugh. Samantha looked to her right and sitting across from them, she saw a man dressed in a flashy suit whose neck was covered in tattoos. His hands were also in handcuffs. Kaito grabbed Samantha by her chin and shifted her to face him.
"Ignore him." Kaito seethed.
"Who is that? And why is he laughing?" Samantha raised her brow at the man. "Can he understand us?"
"I'm starting to see why you became a big softie Kaito." Inochi grinned. "You must be Kaito's bimbo. I bet she's keeping you running back for more, like a lost puppy, huh Kaito?" Inochi whistled at them.
"Excuse me?" Samantha balled her fist. "Who do you think you are?"
"Samantha, ignore him." Kaito demanded her. "He's not worth your attention."
"But he called me a—"
"He's trash." Kaito spat. "Only garbage comes out of his mouth. That's why I told you to ignore him."
"So you haven't told her about me yet? Or about your past?" Inochi smirked at her. "The reason why you won't be able to see him ever again is because of me. But if the dastard had done what I told him, we wouldn't be in this mess."
"Haruka, if you don't shut him up, I'm going to kill him." Kaito stepped forward, but Haruka yanked him back by the arm.
"You, sit down. Don't start a fight in my office." Haruka scolded Kaito. "And you, zip it." Haruka eyed Inochi suspiciously.
"I haven't finished introducing myself." Inochi cackled. "The name is Inochi, sweetheart." He smirked at Samantha flirtatiously. She responded by scrunching her nose in disgust. "Which part of the US are you from?"
"She's from you better keep those lips closed if you know what's good for you." Kaito sneered.
"Look at you trying to be a boss like your father." Inochi laughed. "Too bad you'll never be as good as he wants you to be."
Samantha took the top off her hot coffee and chucked it at him. She even tipped the entire cup over his hair and dropped it on his head. Inochi snarled at her.
"YOU CRAZY B—"
Samantha slapped him as hard as she could. "I'm sorry, I'm just getting rid of my garbage." She spat at him. "But tossing it away wasn't enough."
Inochi lunged forward to attack Samantha but Kaito blocked him and held him against the wall. Somehow, he had come out of his cuffs. All the cops stood up with guns in their hands and aimed for Kaito.
"Kaito... release him." Haruka tapped Kaito's shoulder. Kaito ignored him and kept his eyes on Inochi. If he hadn't stepped in just now, Samantha would've been seriously hurt.
"Lower your weapons!" Samantha gasped. "Kaito, let go of him. Don't be rash, okay?" She tugged his arm. "I started it, I'm sorry."
"If you ever attempt at touching her, no," Kaito's voice was dangerously low. "If you look at her, talk to her, or even think about my wife, I will rip your organs out and gladly watch you die and bleed out at my feet."
"Kaito!" Samantha slapped his shoulder, but Kaito didn't flinch.
"I'll see you in prison and I will make your life hell." Kaito's words slipped out like venom. He released Inochi and dragged Samantha back over to Haruka's desk. Samantha was shocked that he managed to get out of his handcuffs so effortlessly.
The police all lowered their guns and another came and put a new pair of handcuffs on Kaito's wrists.
"How did you—" Samantha looked at his arms.
"The next time I tell you to ignore someone, just do it." Kaito whispered to Samantha and sat down with a sigh. He was more than exhausted at this point.
"I just got some news about your brother. Katashi had two gunshot wounds to his stomach, but he had them removed and he'll be okay. He is going to need some therapy though." Haruka mumbled. Kaito let out a breath of relief and relaxed his shoulders. "Now that that's over, I've gotta finish this paperwork. Samantha, I think it may be time for you to go back and rest."
"No." Samantha sat next to Kaito and clung to his arm. "I'll wait until they transfer him."
"Samantha." Haruka groaned. "Aren't you tired?"
"Yep." Samantha laid her head to rest on Kaito's shoulder. "I'm not going anywhere until he's about to leave." And in minutes, Samantha fell asleep. Kaito was flustered at her public display of affection, but that feeling quickly went away when he realized that the time left with her was short.
He pressed his lips to her forehead and then glanced at Haruka. Haruka was coughing awkwardly but stopped when Kaito made a sudden request. "Is there a way for me to be able to keep in contact with her when I'm locked away?"
"I'll have to see." Haruka shrugged.
"If not, there's still something I'd like for you to help me with." Kaito frowned.
"Which is?"
"This is gonna sound ridiculous." Kaito groaned. "But I think she will appreciate it."
"You're not gonna ask me to send a love letter are you?"
Kaito gagged in his mouth. "I just want a picture of us together."
"Cheesy." He snickered.
"Just take one and send it to her after I'm back in Queenstown."
~
(6 Months Later...)
The sound of the metal door clacked against the walls. Kaito was being led down a long hallway of Queenstown Penitentiary by two guards who had both of his legs and hands tied to prevent him from escaping. Kaito did have a habit of freeing his hands and feet whenever he was bored.
As they walked with him, they remained silent until they stopped in front of a door. "You have a visitor."
Kaito looked up at the prison guard but stayed quiet. They freed him from his handcuffs and unlocked the door before shoving him inside gently and locking the door behind him.
It had been some time since Kaito talked with anyone. He was isolated away from all the other prisoners because he was known at this point. He used to be an Assassin. But the rumors about him being entangled with a criminal organization circled around, so many of the prisoners wanted to keep their distance.
"Yikes, you look hideous." Haruka crossed his arms and leaned against the table casually. Kaito showed no excitement or disappointment that Haruka was there. "They don't offer haircuts in prison?"
Kaito rolled his eyes. "I can't afford one right now." He shrugged. Kaito was spending his time wisely by saving up for Keiji. He was keeping his promise to Samantha. Days before he was flown back to the States, he asked Wilson to sell everything he owned and contribute it towards raising his son or supplying for his mother and brother.
He didn't feel it was necessary for him to own such things while he rotted away in prison.
"Don't work yourself to death." Haruka snorted.
"Why are you here?" Kaito wanted to get straight to the point. Sugarcoating wasn't his style.
"Impatient much?" Haruka snorted.
"Because I don't see why you're here." Kaito shrugged. "Are Hana and Katashi, okay?"
"Relax, your mom and brother are fine. Katashi served his sentence while in rehab. He's back to studying at his University." Haruka nodded. Kaito was satisfied with that answer. "I came here because I wanted to offer a proposal to you."
"Here we go again." Kaito snickered. "I'm not interested in a reduced sentence Haruka. Just let me live the rest of my life in peace."
"I'm not offering you a reduced sentence." Haruka pulled out a piece of paper and a pen from his coat and placed it on the table. "I'm offering you a job. Of course, it doesn't seem like you'll get a reduced sentence anytime soon, but there is an alternative."
"Isn't it a little late for me to become a cop?" Kaito cackled.
"This isn't that kind of job." Haruka shook his head. "I want you to work for me as an agent, or a spy. Since you've already helped us in the arrest of Inochi and Asuka, our team needs someone like you to infiltrate and gain other illegal intel. You're still associated with Yakuza, right?"
"Maybe." Kaito teased.
"You are the only person right now who can do this job. It doesn't pay much as your last job, but it's your best shot at seeing the outside world."
"What's in it for me? Besides money?"
"A chance of freedom."
"How are Samantha and Keiji?" Kaito changed the subject. Freedom and money weren't important to him. He wanted to know if he'd ever be able to see his family again.
"Not sure. Haven't spoken to them in a while." Haruka shrugged. "But you could find out yourself if you agree."
Kaito thought about it hard. He wanted to know how they were doing, but he didn't want to interfere with their normal lives. "I'll sign it if you promise to update me on Samantha's whereabouts."
"Aren't you curious about seeing her yourself?" Haruka blinked.
"I don't need to see her." Kaito grabbed the pen and signed the paper. "I just need to know if she's well. That's more than enough." Kaito lied.
"Liar." Haruka chuckled. "Don't play with me, your red face is giving you away."
Kaito massaged his cheeks in annoyance.
"Alright then. Since you've signed, let's go." Haruka waved him over to the door.
"What?" Kaito blinked. "That's it? They're allowing me to go?"
"There's a bigger obstacle waiting for you outside of the prison." Haruka smiled. Kaito followed Haruka suspiciously until they reached the entrance of the prison. The guards let them through easily, but before Kaito even got the chance to step out, he felt arms wrap around his shoulders.
In seconds he felt his lips being engulfed by another and his weight was pushed to the wall. His eyes widened when he realized who had attacked him with an affectionate act. It was Samantha of course, and she tilted her head to deepen the kiss, which Kaito immediately returned.
Samantha pulled away and grabbed Kaito before tugging him close. "Kaito!"
"You almost scared the crap out of me." Kaito replied with a laugh.
"I've missed you so much." Samantha dug her face into Kaito's jumpsuit but then pulled away when she got a whiff of his scent. He smelled like dust and cigarettes. Kaito noticed how quick she was to pull away and yanked her forward into another hug to annoy her. "Kaito!" She gasped.
"You missed me, huh?" He placed a kiss on her cheek.
"Ow! Let go!"
"Now you want me to let you go? You attacked me first." Kaito mocked her. Then he relaxed his hold on her and allowed her to pull away. "You cut your hair." Kaito brushed his hand over her head.
"And yours grew long again." Samantha poked him. "We switched styles."
"Only you would say that." Kaito grinned. Kaito was really at a loss for words. This is what Haruka meant by Obstacle. "How have you been?" He leaned forward and studied her closely. She didn't look like she was having a rough time. She looked down and grabbed Kaito by the hands. Kaito felt his face go red and nervously stood there when she entwined her fingers with his.
"Honestly? I've seriously missed you to death. Keiji is doing better but he wants you there. Other than that, I've been trying to find a better place to live. Somewhere with more room and farther away from the city. And finding another daycare has been hectic. I kind of wish your mother was here to help take care of him. He cries about her a lot too. And he wants to go back to Japan to visit her, but it's a lot right now..."
"How's work?"
"At the company? I quit that job." Samantha laughed. "I work as a writer from home now."
Kaito was amazed at how quickly she was able to adjust and change while he was away. "I love you so much." He mumbled, but Samantha heard it loud and clear. Kaito caught himself.
"Did you just...?" Samantha pulled away and gasped.
"Wait." Kaito winced and lowered his head. "Darn it."
"Kaito Takashi, did you just say that you loved me?" Samantha teased him. She always heard it from Leo Takemi, but never from the actual man behind the alias. Kaito was trying to think of every logical reason of an excuse, but none came to him.
"I was talking to myself." Kaito huffed.
"About me?"
"I... uh." Kaito bit his tongue.
"I love you too Kaito." Samantha pecked him and smiled. "I love you A LOT!" She yelled to the rooftops.
"Okay, Samantha lower your voice." Kaito cleared his throat nervously when Haruka looked over his shoulder.
"I'll keep screaming unless you say it again!"
"Samantha." Kaito shrugged her off. "Don't rub it in." He followed Haruka towards the car. "I love you. Happy?" He turned to face Samantha after mumbling it aloud. Samantha clung to his arm.
"Keiji will be happy to hear you say it too."
"Don't get carried away, sweetheart." Kaito laughed.
