Juliana's POV
"So is it true that girl sleepovers are all about hair and make up and boy talk?" Justin asked over his bite of ice cream while he sat on the couch next to me.
"I don't know." I shrugged, shoving a bite of cookies and cream ice cream into my mouth.
"What do you mean you don't know. You're a girl." Elliot rolled his eyes.
"I mean I've never had a sleepover. So I wouldn't know." I didn't look up from my ice cream until I noticed that an odd silence had taken over the room.
Looking up I saw that everybody was now staring at me, either giving me a look of shock or disbelief.
"What do you mean you've never had a sleepover?" Hunter asked, sounding flabbergasted.
"Are you all going to repeat everything I say back to me in question form? Because in that case we are going to have a long night."
"So you're telling me that you have never stayed over at someone else's house, or vice versa?" Massimo asked, seemingly not believing me.
"I know what a sleepover is Massimo." I rolled my eyes. "And no. I really don't have that many friends in New York. Most of them disappear pretty quickly anyway."
"Excuse me?" Uncle Stefano asked, raising an eyebrow at me and I noticed that that comment definitely caught a few people's attention.
"Oh no! Not like that." I exclaimed and they relaxed. "Bad wording on my end. I guess they... dispersed? I don't keep friends for long." I explained.
"Well that's going to change." Elijah said and I along with a few others gave him a questioning look.
"We're going to have a sleepover tonight. All of us." He declared.
"A sleepover? In our own house? With our family, who we see on a nightly basis?" Massimo critiqued, and Elijah simply nodded.
"Yep. Massimo. You and Elliot take your grumpy asses-"
"Language."
"-And go find some board games, Justin come with me, and Hunter keep Juliana up stairs until I say so. Everyone else go get in your PJ's." Elliot demanded and surprisingly everybody listened.
Hunter indeed walked me to my room, made sure I went to change, and then stood guard at my door, not allowing me to leave for the next 15 minutes, while they set up whatever it is they wanted to set up.
When Hunter was allowed to let me loose, I was actually pretty surprised.
When we got downstairs I found that Elijah had set up stations. The coffee table area was for making jewellery, the couch had extra blankets and pillows on it for when we settled down and watched a movie.
What was a little odd to me was the humongous pile of blankets, pillows, and mattresses (yes you heard me right) in the corner of the living room.
Peeking into the kitchen I saw that the counters all had little stations where we could each make and decorate our own pan of brownies, and the dining table was set up for board games.
"Do you like it?" Elijah asked nervously.
"Like it? How could I not like it? You did all of this in fifteen minutes?" I asked bewildered.
Elijah just shrugged but I saw the slight colour that rose to his cheeks and the smile that stretched his face.
"Whatcha wanna do first?" Justin asked, bouncing slightly on his toes.
"I don't know. Suggestions?"
"I say we watch a movie." Massimo said.
"The movie's last dumbass." Elijah said, making the adults glare at him.
"Be nice Elijah, Massimo was never invited to any sleepover's either. This is his first time too." Hunter voiced and I slammed a hand over my mouth to stop from laughing at the look that Massimo was now giving Hunter.
"I have been to sleepover's before, thank you." He said, his voice the sassiest I'd ever heard it.
"With who? Spending all night in the shed doesn't count." Elliot spoke.
"Watch it or I'll cut your tongue out you little shit." He grumbled, clearly unhappy that he had no defence for himself.
"Oh come on guys, leave him alone. I don't think sleepovers were a thing yet." I reasoned and that's when Justin lost it.
Massimo stared at me with his jaw slightly dropped.
"Are you calling me old?" He asked like he couldn't fathom the idea.
"Well I'm not the one who said it but if the shoe fits then wear it vecchietto." I shrugged.
(Translation: Old man)
"You little-"
"Okay," Elijah cut Massimo off before he could say anything else, clapping his hands together. "Let's start with arts and crafts."
So we all headed into the living room, and sat down on the floor surrounding the coffee table.
"To make this more interesting, we are going to do this Secret Santa style. You are going to pull a name out of the bowl, and whoever you pick is whoever you have to make a bracelet for." Elijah explained, and then started around the circle, letting people pull a name.
I was within the first five people to choose, which really didn't mean anything other than that I had to wait even longer to open that little piece of paper.
Finally, once everyone had chosen, I unfolded the tiny slip of paper and just about groaned. It was grandpa.
What am I supposed to make him! The guy had said a total of 11 words to me the entire time I've been here.
I decided that I needed to start if I was going to make it before the 45 minute timer Elijah had set was done.
I messed around with different patterns, colours, and bead combinations for a while, before I gave up, told myself that it was going to look like shit either way, and just started throwing together the first things that seemed right together.
I finished a few minutes before the timer went off, and I realised what I had done. I had done the colour scheme of black, grey, and blue.
When the timer was up, Elijah decided to start where he ended, which would make me one of the last people to give mine.
Can't say I'm complaining, I would like to compare mine to everyone else's. Just to see if I'm about to be embarrassed, ya know?
Justin ended up getting his dad, which meant that he had it pretty easy. He did a randomly coloured bead bracelet that also had Papa spelt on it with a 4 next to it. Which I could only assume was a tribute to the fact that he had 4 children.
Uncle Stefano got his wife, and he gave Aunt Stephanie one that was a simple three strand braid, in yellow, orange, and pink, because she was his "sunshine."
Aunt Stephanie got Elliot, and she did a black beaded bracelet that read "grumpy". Elliot got Hunter and you could tell he put minimum effort into it, he got a bracelet that said "watch it" in the beads. Hunter got Nonna, Nonna got me, I got grandpa and grandpa got Justin.
When it had gotten to my turn, I hesitantly slid the bracelet over to Grandpa, and everyone in the room watched him as he picked it up, examined it all around, and then slid it onto his left wrist.
"Thank you." He said, giving me an approving nod. I gave him a small smile and looked to see a lot of the room looking at him like he'd grown two heads.
Grandpa paid them no mind, instead giving Justin his bracelet, which caused the rest of the room to unlock from whatever trance they were in.
"Well, we've done bracelets, what now?" Elijah asked.
"Let's build a fort!" Justin suggested and he was immediately met with a bunch of groans and people disagreeing.
"How about we play a game?" Uncle Stefano pipped in, and everyone agreed pretty quickly to that.
So we all migrated into the dining room, taking random seats around the table. This time, I opted to sit next to Nonna with Justin on my left side.
"So, what does everyone want to play?" Elijah asked, apparently having been named the sleepover director. And I have to say, I saw a lot of Uncle Stefano in him.
After taking a vote, it turned out that everyone wanted to play something different.
Elijah, Uncle Stefano, and Grandpa voted for a card game.
Nonna, Massimo, and Aunt Stephanie said Monopoly.
Justin, Elliot, and Hunter said Mafia.
"Okay Juliana, looks like you're the tie-breaker." Uncle Stefano said and I quickly thought back to everyone's votes to see if maybe there was a way out of that.
"Oh come on, that's not fair." I groaned, because no matter what I picked, though I already had something in mind, I would still be letting down six people.
"Just pick one Juliana. It's not that hard." Elliot said in a bored tone.
"Fine. Mafia." I said, as it was one of the games I might have a chance at.
"Okay, does anybody actually know how to play that game because I have never heard of that." Massimo complained.
"Because you've been living under a rock." I murmured under my breath and Nonna flicked my ear.
I just shrugged at her and she gave me a little smile.
After we spent a few minutes explaining the game to everyone, we dished out roles. Elliot said that he would be happy being the announcer, aka "referee" of sorts. He would basically narrate everything back to us, and help start arguments.
He also got to decide who was who. He made everyone put their heads down on the table and close their eyes, and then he came around and tapped people on the back. One tap meant townsperson, two taps meant mafia.
I waited patiently until he got to me, and held my breath when I felt one light tap on my back, and a second later another one following it.
I was in the mafia.
