Chapter 33 part 2
Samuel
Samuel didn't know if he should drive away, or stay still, or get out and fight. His adrenaline was so intense it froze him, leaving him sat in his car staring.
The new villain wasn't hurting anyone, not yet, and she wasn't doing any damage to the area around them. She was just lifting herself up into the air and staying there. Doing nothing.
This fact might've brought Samuel comfort. Some kind of reassurance that he had time to think of come up with some kind of plan. I didn't, however, because she was staring right at his car. Right into his eyes.
Even the distance between them didn't seem to blur her gaze. There was no thought, no possibility, that she was looking at someone or something else.
"Shit" Matias mumbled, his chair making a shifting sound.
Samuel became overly conscious of everything. How fast his heart was pounding. How shallow his breathing was. The feeling of his stomach as he moved only slightly. More than anything though, he realized how weak and worn out his powers were.
"Matias" he finally choked, his eyes not leaving Meera.
"We have to get out. She wants to fight." Matias whispered in a hurry, his voice dry and surprisingly monotone.
Samuel wanted to say no. He wanted to say that was a terrible idea. But he couldn't. He knew it was the best option. The only option.
Without another word Samuel opened his door, stepping out. Matias followed in turn, the two standing on either side of the car.
Samuel had begun to break a sweat in spite of the early winter air. He testing his powers slightly in his left hand, the yellow streaks fizzing out and being harder to control then he remembered.
As he glanced around he realized that all the cars around them were empty and the sidewalks had been abandoned. Nobody was here but them. Samuel, Matias, and the new villain.
Out of the corner of his eye Samuel saw Matias begin to walk. His posture was straight and his shoulders were stiff. Samuel knew he must've been scared out of his mind, but to anyone else he had to of appeared confident.
When Samuel began to walk after him his legs were weak. His injuries— primarily his stomach— ached much worse than normal but he had no choice but to ignore it.
As the two approached Meera lowered herself to the ground, but did nothing. No attacks were thrown, and no sudden moves were made.
"Hasn't it been a while?" She asked, seeming eerily happy. Excited, even.
"Since you attacked us? Or the city?" Matias spat.
Samuel bit his tongue. If he could he would've smacked Matias for his smart remarks in such a terrible situation.
Meera hummed with a bitter chuckle.
"Been even longer since you attacked Guzantee" she countered, "if I remember correctly that will be exactly four years ago sometime next week"
Samuel tensed. The fact that she knew such a small detail and date freaked him out more than he'd like to admit.
He managed to glance over at Matias who now had wide eyes and a furious look.
"And the week after that will be my four year anniversary of working at the coffee shop" the new villain continued with a cheeky grin.
She walked closer and closer to Matias with a smug stride and an odd sense on confidence.
"Isn't that funny?" She teased, her face now only inches from Matias'.
Samuel tried to speak up, seeing Matias's clenched fists and tense stance, but by the time he opened his mouth Matias had already landed a quick and solid punch right in Meera's cheek.
She recovered quicker than either of them expected, her bright red powers erupting all around them and causing a ruckus.
"Now why couldn't we have been civil about this?" She shouted over the sudden noise.
Strings swung around Samuel, hitting him like mini whips. He tried to fend them off but his powers were being stubborn and either doing too little or too much. He was stuck in a loop of shocking himself with his powers and not even using enough to fight off the small bits of Meera's.
When he managed to look up Samuel realized how minor his situation was.
Matias was already pulled to his knees by the red and he was just barely keeping his arms free. Pretty soon he would be buried in the strings and wouldn't have a chance of getting out.
Samuel managed to get away from the small bits of power being used on him to make his way over to Matias.
Meera stepped back with a grin, like some kind of easygoing spectator.
"Samuel-" Matias shouted, but Samuel was unable to make out the rest of his words as car windows were smashed and entire hunks of metal were being thrown at buildings.
Samuel used his hands to pull the red strings away from Matias's left arm, still unable to gain control of his powers, but was little help.
Matias was struggling, his entire upper body flailing as his lower body was practically nailed to the ground. His blue powers were doing what they could to contrast the red strings, but were weak and uncontrolled just like Samuels.
"I'll be fine" Matias shouted right into Samuels ear, though Samuel was still barely able to hear him.
Samuel finally looked up to meet his eyes, but all he could do was shake his head. "I'm not leaving you here like this" he shouted back.
Matias's head jerked toward Meera. "Focus on her!" He yelled, his voice growing scratchy and desperate.
Samuel wanted to protest, but knew it was no use. Pulling Meera's powers wouldn't do any good if Meera herself was standing there all the same.
As he stood and gained his balance his stomach yelled at him, sharp pains coming from all around.
He tried to muster up some kind of attack to make Meera hesitate or to give him a second of peace, but it was as if he never had powers in the first place.
"Shit" he hissed under his breath.
By the time Samuel gained enough composure to actually do anything Meera had her obnoxious strings wrapped around his ankles, keeping him a good six feet away from her.
When he looked up her eyes were already on him. In them was a clear intent. A negative intent.
On her face was a calm smile. Her hair blew around in the wind and her eyes narrowed. The sight of it all enraged Samuel beyond belief.
He considered shouting out at her. Calling her all the names he could think of and telling her how terrible of a person she was would've made him happier than ever. But he didn't. He knew better than to even try.
As his ankles were pulled back further and further Samuel began to slip and fall, losing his balance. Eventually he was in the same situation as Matias.
He was on his knees and all the way up to his waist was pure red holding him down, the pressure making his legs tingle and then go numb.
As much as he told himself not to take his eyes off of Meera, Samuel's gaze traveled back to Matias.
The sight made his heart pause and his eyes snap open wide.
Matias's body had disappeared in a pool of red all the way up to his shoulders, his arms not even being out. A pained look was on his face and Samuel could tell Meera wasn't going to let up.
It was up to him. Samuel had to do something, now.
If he didn't, god knows what Meera would've done.
And so he mustered up as much as he could. He did everything in his ability. He ignored all his pain and put all his focus on two things, Meera and his power.
He wasn't sure how successful his attempt would be, but he knew it was all he had.
And so he sent his powers right at her face.
