"I'm going to kill myself." I smashed my head against the kitchen island.
I've been starting at my phone for two whole days, waiting for a message from Jace. What is taking them so long? I know it's not a short drive, but two days? What if something happened?
"Okay, I'm sending him another message." I decided, picking up the phone from the table.
"I think I'll take that." Amadeo quickly snatched it out of my hand, and I looked up at him with wide eyes. "No, I need to know what's going on!"
He placed my phone on the highest cabinet, far away from my reach. "You've sent him fifty messages, just this morning." he chuckled. "Don't worry, your buddies are fine."
I sighed in defeat. I did send him too many messages, to which he responded with a repetitive 'Shut up'.
But how can I shut up? What if they were mugged? Oh, shit. What if Keyla found them?
Ares and his annoying personality will be the first to go. This dude will probably tell Keyla how he enjoyed kissing his girlfriend right under his nose.
And Theo! He-
Well, Theo will survive. He'll become Keyla's jester or something.
"I can see that brain of yours running too fast. Here, take this." Amadeo flicked my forehead and placed a plate full of brownies in front of me.
So that's what he's been doing this whole time.
I left my room like half an hour ago, and immediately headed to the kitchen. I'm a simple girl, okay? I smell something good, I follow it.
"This is so good." I commented, mouth full of chocolate. "You don't look like the baker type."
And I wasn't lying. Let's just get it out there- Amadeo is huge. I mean, the guy even has muscles in his ears.
Who has muscles in their ears?
"Well," he sat down next to me. "Our mom used to make these all the time."
I looked down to the plate.
All my life I used to believe they abandoned me, left me to rot in that place. It's so hard to deal with the fact that none of it was true. I had a mom and a dad who kept looking for me, but eventually died before they could find me.
"What were they like? You know... Our parents?" I whispered, drawing circles with my finger on the table.
He breathed heavily before answering. "Mom was the best woman ever. She had so much love in her, and even though she was hurting, she tried her best to be happy for us." he smiled sadly and nudged me by the shoulder. "You look so much like her, you know?"
I smiled genuinely at him. The way his voice softened when he talked about her... I wish I could meet her.
"And... And dad?" even though this word seems so foreign to me, I felt like I owed him at least that. My hatred towards him wasn't his fault, he wanted me.
Amadeo cracked a sad smile. "Our dad was the strongest man I've ever known. No matter what, with him it was 'family comes first'. I even kept-" He suddenly stopped, furrowing his eyebrows in thought.
"What?" I asked confused. He instantly left the bar stool he was seating on and pointed at me. "Wait here."
I watched silently as he hurriedly left the kitchen. A few moments had passed before he came back, carrying something small in his hand.
"What's that?"
"This was dad's watch." he grinned. "I knew I had to keep it for you." He gently took my hand and put it in my palm. The cold metal and his warm touch made me shiver.
My fingers traced it. The watch was made out of silver and stones decorated its hands. It was so delicate, yet... Rough. That's a rich man's watch for sure.
As I nervously inspected it, I felt a slight bump under my thumb. I looked at Amadeo questioningly. "Press it." he encouraged, nodding his head with a small smile.
I listened to him. The top part opened like a book, and I got a full view to the watch's inside.
Oh my God.
I was looking at a small photo with blurry eyes. There was a small girl, held by her father's arms.
"Is that- is that me?" I stuttered, trying desperately to stop my tears from falling.
"Yeah, you and dad." Amadeo whispered, pulling me to his side. I put my head on his shoulder, not being able to take my eyes off the photo.
I was here once. I had a life with a family who loved me. Everything could've been different. My life could have been here, surrounded by everything I've never had.
"Is that dad's watch?" Santo's voice broke my thoughts, and I instantly turned my head towards him.
He stood by the kitchen's entrance, looking at us with a raised eyebrow. "I thought grandpa had it."
It felt like my jaw hit the floor. "Grandpa?" I uttered, blinking rapidly.
"Yep, he and grandma are still alive. Well, just dad's side." he responded bluntly, making his way to the fridge.
I stared at him, and then at Amadeo. "What?" I screeched. "Why did nobody tell me?"
"We didn't want you to feel overwhelmed or obligated to see them, you did just get here." he laughed at my shocked face.
That's actually... Nice and thoughtful. Shit, in no way am I ready to meet them, not yet at least. It's already weird having brothers, so grandparents?
Amadeo's phone lit up, and he read the message with an annoyed look. "I gotta go, work stuff." he apologized, and looked like he genuinely wanted to stay.
"Oh, before I go." he took his jacket off the chair and turned to face me. "I want you to keep that, okay?"
I looked down at the watch in my hand. I wanted to keep that too. I nodded, and he gave us both a smile before leaving.
"Hey, are those brownies?" Santo made his way to me, and I pushed the plate to him with a sigh. "Enjoy."
"Still no message?" he asked while trying to pick the largest piece. I smashed my head on the table for the second time today. "No."
Just then, my phone rang. My head snapped up, eyes as wide as they can get. "Holy shit! Oh... Oh my God." I rambled, locking eyes with Santo. He looked like a dog with its ears up.
Oh no. That's Santo's 'I'm going to do something that will make you want to punch me' look.
I got to my feet, but it was too late. He followed the ringing, and before I knew it, he held my phone above his head.
"No! Give it back, asshole!" I yelled, jumping and trying to retrieve my stolen phone.
"I don't think so, you see," he clicked his tongue, pushing me away with a hand on my face. "You already showed your cards."
"I'm gonna punch you in the balls. Give it back." I threatened, but every time I took a step towards him, he placed his hand on my face.
I want to kill him.
"All you do is mop around and wait for a message, so if you want it," he waved the phone. "You'll have to do something for me."
I groaned. Having brothers is not fun.
"What something?" I hissed.
He just smirked.
