The wind bit at Evie's skin, sharp and cold, pulling her from unconsciousness. Her head pounded like drums echoing in a cavern, and the ground beneath her felt foreign—cold marble, not the soft carpet of her bedroom.
She groaned, pushing herself up on trembling arms. Her eyes widened.
What the hell...?
Before her stood an enormous courtyard that belonged in some fantasy movie—if fantasy movies had buildings carved from obsidian and glimmering crystal, their spires piercing the sky. Glowing runes etched into stone walls pulsed like living veins. Trees with silver leaves swayed despite the still air, and the sky above was an ethereal blend of twilight purples and deep blues.
But the people... The people weren't normal.
Students walked in groups, dressed in sleek dark uniforms. A girl with translucent wings giggled as she floated past, her laughter like wind chimes. Another student's hair flickered like candle flames. Magic hung thick in the air, shimmering threads Evie could feel under her skin, alive and electric.
Her pulse quickened. Nope. This is a dream. Or I'm dead. Or I finally snapped from party planning stress.
A shadow fell over her.
"Lost, are we?"
The voice was smooth—too smooth—and filled with a lazy amusement that immediately put her on edge.
Evie glanced up—and promptly forgot how to breathe.
The guy standing over her was tall, effortlessly lean with broad shoulders that stretched a fitted black jacket. His silver hair was tousled in an artful way that suggested he either just rolled out of bed or simply didn't care, and his eyes—stormy gray with flecks of silver—glinted with mischief. He radiated confidence. Not the kind you put on, but the kind born from knowing you owned the room—and maybe the world.
His presence sent a shiver down her spine that wasn't entirely fear.
"Well?" His lips curved into a smirk. "Cat got your tongue?"
Evie snapped herself out of her daze. "Who—Where—What is this place? Who are you?!"
"Questions, questions. First As far as I can guess, those magical portals are getting rusty ,that explains your bumpy ride to academy. I was supposed to receive you as the member of welcoming committee." He gave a million dollar smile like whatever he is saying makes sense. He crouched, eye-level now, his strong gaze never leaving hers. "Name's Seth. Prince of the Air Kingdom. And you, darling, just crash-landed into Redblood Academy."
She blinked. "Prince of... Air? Academy? What?"
Seth sighed dramatically. "Really hate the 'explain everything' part, but fine—"
Heavy footsteps echoed across the courtyard, and Seth's smirk widened. "Ah. And here comes the welcoming committee."
Evie turned just as another figure approached—and oh God.
He was taller than Seth, broader too, with an intensity that hit like a furnace. His hair, a deep shade of crimson, glinted under the strange twilight, and his amber eyes... they burned. Every step he took was measured, powerful, like he owned the ground he walked on.
He stopped beside Seth, gaze sliding to Evie.
"This is her?" His voice was deep—commanding, like a growl restrained by sheer will.
"The one and only," Seth drawled. "Evie, meet Rowan—Prince of the Fire Kingdom. He's warm and fuzzy once you get past the murdery glare."
Rowan's eyes didn't leave hers, intense and unyielding. "She doesn't look like much."
Evie's jaw dropped. "Excuse me?"
"Easy there, Fireboy," Seth said lazily, though his hand subtly moved closer to Evie's back—as if ready to pull her away if needed. "Not everyone comes with built-in arrogance."
Rowan ignored him, gaze sharp. "She's supposed to be her? She looks like she'd break in half."
Heat flared in Evie's chest—part indignation, part... something else she refused to examine. "Look, I don't know who you think I am, but I didn't ask to be here, okay?"
"Good," Rowan said snapping. "Because no one here asked for you."
"Damn, you're a ray of sunshine," Evie shot back.
A chuckle broke the tension—smooth, calming like the ebb of a tide. "Rowan, you're scaring her."
Evie turned toward the new voice—and found herself staring at a man with dark hair falling in soft waves around his face, sea-green eyes calm and knowing. His presence was... different. Not sharp like Rowan or playful like Seth—just steady, like standing at the edge of a peaceful shore. Yet there was something beneath the calm, a depth that tugged at her.
"Duke," he introduced gently. "Prince of the Water Kingdom." He glanced at Rowan, then back at her. "Sorry about him. His bark is worse than his bite."
"Debatable," Seth muttered.
Evie managed a shaky breath. Duke's voice alone seemed to soothe the whirlwind inside her. "Okay... so let me get this straight. Princes. Kingdoms. Magic school. And you—" she pointed at them, "—know me. Why?"
Another set of footsteps—slower, heavier. Her gaze snapped up—
And everything shifted.
The man approaching wasn't as overtly sharp as Rowan or as effortlessly cocky as Seth. Yet he commanded the space. His earthy brown hair tousled, moss-green eyes steady and deep. His steps were deliberate, each one sending a subtle thrum through the ground, like the earth itself acknowledged him.
Evie's breath caught. His aura wasn't loud—it was felt. Like standing before a mountain that didn't need to speak to prove its power.
He stopped in front of her, gaze meeting hers with unwavering calm. "Sol," he said, voice a rich baritone. "Prince of the Earth Kingdom."
He extended his hand. Not demanding. Not assuming. Just... offering.
Her fingers hovered before she hesitated. What am I doing? Yet something about him—about all of them—pulled at her in ways she didn't understand.
She placed her hand in his. Warm. Solid. Like an anchor.
"Welcome, Evie," Sol said softly. "To Redblood Academy."
"Yah yah Welcome, Evie," Rowan said bored tone. His eyes so intense I cant help but look away. "Did you know darlin? You are not human but an elemental just like us? I bet u didn't!"
I stood there frozen ,soaking whatever he was trying to say.
Duke gave Rowan a warning glare that he ignored and continued . " you are not human , get over it"
Her head spun. Questions clawed at her. 'Why these people call themselves prince? Elemental ? I am not Human' She thought as Something flared in her chest, she felt heat blazing through her.
And then the world tilted. Her vision blurred. Voices became distant echoes.
"Evie?" Seth's voice—sharper now, panic threading through the cool.
"Hey—hey, look at me," Duke's soothing tone, closer.
"She's fainting—damn it—!" Sol's growl.
Strong arms caught her before she hit the ground. Seth's scent—fresh rain and sky—surrounded her. "Evie, stay with me—breathe, dammit!"
Warm fingers brushed her cheek—Duke. "She's overwhelmed at once. Her body's reacting to the magic."
"Then fix it!" Rowan snapped.
Sol's voice rumbled, calm yet commanding. "We will have a talk with you Rowan, but nows not the time. Clear the space ,Let her breathe."
Her pulse thundered in her ears, but the warmth of them—all of them—kept her from slipping into darkness.
And in the haze, one thought echoed—
What the hell in the looney tales have I gotten myself into?
