The events of the day kept replaying in his head as he drove home, everything from the moment Spade walked into his office. He should have known nothing good would come out of that meeting.
He sighed out as his eyes stared off into the road. He could still feel and hear the way Spade had threatened him when he tried to hit him.
Where did he even get that courage from, trying to hit Spade, the Almighty Spade. He couldn't even blame himself, he was very angry after all the things Spade said about him being his father's errand boy.
And then the fact that Spade had gotten physical with him, that would be the second time since they met that he'd gotten physical with him, but the first time their skin barely touched but this time they did
Not only did he feel Spade's large hands cover his wrist but he also felt the slight touch of his lips on his earlobe. And the fact that he didn't feel irritated or agitated by that singular touch frightened him a lot. Unlike usually when someone's touch would creep him out.
It had been like that since that night, 11 years ago. That night ruined a lot of things for him, one of them being ever feeling anything asides disgust and fear at the touch of someone.
His skin didn't crawl with anxiety or disgust, he didn't pull back or flinch out of fear and he didn't have a panic attack. And Spade was so close to him, so very close that he could feel parts of Spade's body he wasn't supposed to feel, and wasn't supposed to enjoy feeling it but he did.
And then the offer, the offer Spade had given him about coming to work for him. It would be somewhat awkward but then something about the idea felt thrilling, working with someone as dangerous as Spade, that would be like going all the way out of his comfort zone, venturing into dangerous territory.
He could feel his whole body bubble with excitement, he blinked once and then twice. Was he actually just getting excited about working with Spade, someone that explodes at the slightest provocation, he doesn't hesitate to threaten anybody that gets on his nerves. And here he is actually trying to consider that stupid suicidal idea of going to work for him.
Even if Spade doesn't explode one day out of anger and kill him, his own father would be honored to do that And besides if he does agree, which he isn't even considering doing, what exactly will he be doing for Spade.
The man already has everything he wants, so what does he need him for?
His apartment building came into view and he slowed down and stopped in front of it before letting out a sigh of relief, his hands were still securely wrapped around the steering.
He rested his head on the headrest of his seat and closed his eyes, controlling the thoughts in his mind from spiralling out of control.
He looked over to the passenger seat and picked up his jacket, phone and stepped out of the car, draping the jacket over his arm, he walked straight into the building, the lobby was empty so he just passed.
He stopped in front of the elevator and as if it could read his mind, the door dinged and slid open slowly, his head was down so the moment the elevator doors opened up, he sighed and looked up.
He froze Like an antelope caught in headlights, he just stood there looking at the person In the elevator, can this day get any weirder.
The person in the elevator stared back at him mirroring his expression, a little bit of shock and surprise. He was putting on the same trench coat he had on the last time he met him on this elevator.
He clenched his jaw and swallowed before cussing out, this is not happening, not now He shut his eyes and sighed out.
"Are you gonna get in or you're just gonna stand there" his voice finally broke the awkward silence between the both of them.
Without saying anything Nate just looked around the hallway, down to the lobby and down to the right side of the building. He grounded his teeth as his eyes found the almost bored blue ones of the man in front of him.
He was trying to pretend like last night didn't happen, another ploy by Spade to get him to shut up, nice try.
"You're not considering taking the stairs are you"? He asked somewhat amused at the dumb idea the kid was already thinking about
"I'd rather take my chances with the stairs than getting on this elevator with you" Nate almost gritted out as he could feel anger bubbling inside of him. He had shared a lot of things with this guy, even though they weren't exactly friends and what he shared weren't exactly confidential, still he opened up to him, and that's something he hasn't done in a while, only to find out that Blondie was the same guy he met at Spade's club, as if that's not enough, he's still the same guy he saw with Spade last night, while Spade was murdering someone, he just watched.
How did he not recognize him both times he'd seen him on the elevator as the guy he met at Spade's club, maybe because he had a lot on his mind.
Matteo sighed, kind of understanding Nate's plight and somewhat anger, but it wasn't his fault Spade asked him to watch the kid, it was purely work, he didn't mean any harm, at least that's what he thought.
"Your apartment is on the 10th floor, you're gonna take the stairs to the tenth floor because you don't wanna be in the elevator with me, why"? He asked looking at him with interest.
Nate kissed his teeth and rolled his tongue in his mouth "You were spying on me for Spade, and if that's not reason enough, try to remember I saw you last night, yeah in the room where Spade shot someone" he rushed out a bit harshly.
Matteo almost rolled his eyes, this kid was taking it too far, making a big deal out of this, it's not like he violated the guy's rights, okay maybe he did but it's all part of job. If the kid is this bothered about him spying on him, wait till he finds out Spade had cameras installed in every corner of his room.
"Look, I was just following orders, it's not....." Nate scoffed and cut him off
"Really smooth, you were just following orders" he muttered looking away from him for a second "do you even live here, or was it all just part of the plan, you showing up in the elevator randomly"? He asked and Matteo let out a deep breath before scratching the back his head.
"Yes I do, I live here, in the penthouse" he muttered and he heard Nate gasp out in shock, he turned his head left and right in disbelief
"You live in the penthouse, you rented the whole penthouse just to spy on me, wow" he almost yelled making Matteo to sigh out "Spade must really feel threatened by me to go to such lengths" he muttered
"He's not threatened by you, he just doesn't trust you" he muttered looking at the kid closely already getting tired of their little arguing "and besides I didn't rent it, he owns this place" he muttered making Nate's eyes to further widened in shock and horror
He looked at the building again and scoffed lightly running his hands through his hair, this is unbelievable "What"? He asked dumbfounded
"Spade owns the building" he clarified.
Nate ran his hands through his face. Spade owns the building he'd been staying at since he moved out of his father's house and he was just finding out now. Just great.
"Look are you gonna get on the elevator or I should just shut it and get going"? Matteo asked impatiently, Nate sighed out and narrowed his eyes at him before slowly walking inside the elevator, coming to the absolute decision that he'd not say a word to the blonde man beside him.
He pressed the button for the 10th floor and they both waited until the elevator closed, standing side by side everything was so awkward and tense.
They were like two couples who'd been fighting for ages and were finally put together to settle their differences.
While Nate stared at the buttons on the elevator, Matteo stared right at Nate thought the elevator doors.
The silence stretched, it felt like they'd been standing there for eternity, like the elevator wasn't even moving. Nate sighed out and looked up, very much aware of the man beside him.
He said he wasn't gonna talk to him, he wouldn't ask or say anything to him but the silence was eating him up, this wasn't like the last two times he'd met him on this very elevator. Everything was out of place.
"So is that what you do for him"? He asked and Matteo looked at him, frowning in confusion. "Spy on people, is that what you do for him"? He asked and Matteo just sighed out understanding him. He looked at him intently, and Nate didn't look away, this felt way different than being around Spade, he didn't feel his palms getting sweaty, or his heartbeat increasing or his whole body heating up, he felt more relaxed with this blonde guy than he felt with Spade, but he definitely didn't mean that in the wrong way.
Matteo's lips quirped up in a half smile as he kept his stare on Nate's face "It depends" he muttered
"On what"? He asked
"On how attractive and pant dropping hot the target is" he muttered watching as Nate's lips parted slightly, letting out lightweight air, his expression was priceless as he suddenly became speechless and frozen in one place. Matteo was enjoying getting into his head like this, it was fun and thrilling.
Nate swallowed and cleared his throat, looking away from Matteo as he felt his neck getting hotter, he quickly pulled at his tie.
"I'm just kidding" he muttered nonchalantly looking away from Nate and the young man almost face palmed himself at how funny he must have looked, thinking the blonde agreed to the assignment because he thought Nate was hot. "I just follow where he tells me" he muttered and Nate scoffed lightly looking at Matteo from the elevator doors.
"So what? You're just like an errand boy to him? You go wherever he tells you and do whatever he tells you to do, like a robot"? He asked looking at him, the blonde just shoved his hands in his pocket, slightly clenching his jaw, not out of anger but just so he could think.
"Not an errand boy" he muttered "I'm his under boss, his conglomerate, his concierge, his tech guy and his friend" he muttered making Nate almost choke on his own spit, his widened eyes looking at Matteo in surprise.
"You, his friend? Spade has friends"? He asked in disbelief and Matteo turned to look at him with confusion etched on his face
"He's different than you see him, he's not all that bad" he muttered and Nate scoffed
"Yeah right, is that what you tell yourself to justify what he does"? He asked making Matteo to fully turn to face him, with a questioning gaze
"And what does he do"? He asked and Nate just swallowed right now regretting mentioning that, because he didn't know if the blonde man was just sent here to kill him for knowing so much or he was genuinely interested in talking to him.
"Kill people" he all but whispers out and Matteo clenched his jaw before turning to look at the elevator doors again, his eyes moved to the numbers at the top and they were almost at Nate's apartment floor.
"Is that how you see him? A killer"? He asked and Nate just sighed out
"That's not how I see him, that's who he is, that's who I walked in on yesterday" he muttered, Matteo looked at him through the elevator doors and clenched his jaw
"You'd never understand" he muttered and the elevator dinged opening both doors at Nate's apartment floor, Nate stepped out immediately before turning around to face the blonde man
"You're right, I'd never understand and I don't intend to" he muttered as he watched the elevator doors closed before letting out a deep breath and walking away towards his apartment.
Okay 😁😁
