Nate could feel his senses leave him, his whole attention was on Laura, the old lady that had been with them from when they lost their mother, he could see her mouth moving as she explained to his father what had happened, but all he could think of was the words he'd heard her say and the words he'd read in the white piece of paper in his hands.
He could almost hear how fast and loud his heart was beating, the thumping sounds reaching his ears and blood rushed to his head as he could already see black spots cloud his vision.
His sister had left, she ran away from home. He saw her that morning, they even talked and she acted as if everything was fine, she didn't even act weird or show any sign that she was running away, and now this.
He looked up at Laura and she gave him a sad look, but that didn't help him at all, it only made him feel worse. Why didn't she tell him? And why wait until now before leaving?
His eyes moved to his father and he could see the anger and rage in his face, the way the veins on his neck bulged out, he tightened his fists at his side before he asked Laura to leave, she nodded before walking out of the study.
His eyes slowly moved away from the figure of his father and landed on the two men sitting on the couch, neither of them saying anything, Matteo just looked at his father as if he could see something no one else could, while Spade still sat with his legs spread and his hands intertwined in front of him, he hadn't moved from where he sat, hadn't changed position and his face still looked pretty much the same.
Bored, unbothered, blank and dead grey eyes stared right through his father. Matteo was quite easier to read, Nate could see the slight surprise in his eyes, but Spade was quite different, Nate couldn't even as much as guess what was running through his mind at the moment.
Spade dragged his feet from where they were and slowly pulled himself up from the couch, still keeping his gaze on Greg, he didn't react or show that whatever they just heard affected him in any way, Greg recoiled back discreetly at the sudden movements of Spade, he swallowed as he looked and felt small in front of the deadly man.
Matteo's eyes followed Spade as he also stood up, being the one closest to Nate on the couch, he looked at the young man and deep down, buried inside the confusion and fear was sadness, the kid just found out his sister ran away from home, of course he should be sad, but that should literally be the least of his problem right now, his eyes moved away from Nate and landed on the ticking time bomb beside him.
He could see the way Spade's jaw flexed and how cool and calm he looked, it didn't smell good. Whenever Spade was this calm, someone would end up dead.
"Mr DeVille..." Greg started saying with his voice almost low but Spade's sharp gaze quickly shut him up as he clamped his mouth shut
"Where's your daughter Mr Miller"? He asked dangerously low as if he didn't already know, or as if he hadn't heard the old lady that just left minutes ago.
Greg opened his mouth and closed it again, not finding the right words to say, his eyes moved from Spade and landed on Matteo, he swallowed realizing he was standing in front of two very dangerous and deadly men, one wrong word from him and he could end up dead in seconds, so he had to choose his words wisely.
"I... Uh... Mr DeVille, I assure you, I have it under control" he stuttered looking between both men, with hard gazes on him, he felt like he would shit his pants.
Nate watched in awe, as he had never seen his father like this. This man was someone he feared all his life, mere thoughts about his father could make him confused and lose focus. But here he was, almost shitting his pants in front of Spade
Nate would have laughed at the scene in front of him, if he wasn't already in a mess himself. Yes his father was in huge trouble with Spade, but he didn't think he was spared either, if anything he was in bigger trouble than his father.
"We had an agreement Mr Miller, I was supposed to leave here with a wife and your debt settled" Spade muttered looking at Greg with his eyes looking so scary and terrifying, he took two steps towards the man as he saw the fear cloud his eyes "so what is this am I hearing about her running away"? He asked clenching his jaw
Greg's eyes moved from his to Matteo's eyes, his eyes shifting from fear to terror. He swallowed hard thinking of the next words to tell Spade, this man was unpredictable. "Spade I am sure she didn't go far and I'll find her in no time, just give me a little bit more time" he rushed out, Spade narrowed his eyes at the man, raising his brows up in question
"It's Mr DeVille to you" he grunted out and the man just nodded frantically "give you more time you say"? He asked shoving his hands into his pockets, he looked back at Matteo and the blonde was just watching, normally he was always the chatty one between the both of them, but at times like this, he always stepped aside and watched because that way he could calculate a million ways to torture someone if the need arose. "Don't you think we've dragged this contract/marriage thing for far too long"? He asked gesturing with his hands as he took another step towards Greg, the man could no longer say anything, he just stood frozen watching as Spade circled around him. He stopped right behind Greg and leaned in closer to the man's ears, his eyes slowly landing on Nate's as he held his gaze, watching his every movement, drinking in his every feature. "I told you not to fuck me over Greg" he muttered hearing the man suck in a harsh scared breath, he leaned back up, his eyes still set on Nate as if he was the one he was talking to. "I promised I'd kill you and everyone you love if you fucked me over" he muttered, as if threatening not just Greg but Nate too.
The younger man swallowed hard as he felt the words of Spade cut through his skin, and flow through his blood like it was being injected into him. He knew the threats were meant for his father, but somehow he felt like Spade was talking to him, like someone using norse code.
"I assure you Mr DeVille, I knew nothing about this, and I promise you, just give me more time and i will personally bring her to you" he rushed out fearfully, Spade scoffed at how pathetic he sounded, his lips tilted in a lopsided grin and smirk, with his eyes still on Nate.
He smacked his lips "oh you don't know where she is, I believe you" he muttered before moving from Greg's back and standing beside him "but he does" he muttered nodding his head towards Nate, making the young man widen his eyes in shock and horror.
Of course he didn't know where his sister was, and Spade saying he did was only compromising things for him. Matteo turned to look at him so quickly he could almost feel his jacket hold his neck tightly, he narrowed his eyes at Nate before looking back at Spade, he could see the seriousness in Spade's eyes and the unwavering certainty in his words. Making Matteo wonder if he was telling the truth, but how was he sure Nate knew where his sister had gone to?
Nate felt his father's hard gaze on him as he was put into the limelight, everyone in the room had their eyes on him, but the only one that kind of really mattered right now, the one that really got into his skin was that of Spade. Yes he still feared and dreaded his father's stare but he was more aware of Spade's eyes on him.
"I've wasted enough time on you and your daughter Miller" he muttered still looking at Nate, somehow his words had a double meaning to it. "So here's what's going to happen" he muttered lowly "I'm gonna give you two days, 48 hours to find her and bring her to me yourself, if you don't then I'm going to find her, then I'm going to kill her and then I'm gonna kill him" his voice got hard at that part as he watched Nate's lips part slightly "then I'm gonna kill you" he finished before his eyes finally left Nate's.
Nate felt the air in his lungs being sucked out, Spade just threatened to kill him again, what was it about Spade and threatening to kill him, what did he ever do to him? He closed his sweaty hands as he felt his heart slowly beat and the thumping reducing, he swallowed hard. He shouldn't like the way the threats from Spade sounded, but it was like he couldn't control the other parts of his body, they acted on their own.
"You have 48 hours to decide Miller" he muttered one last time, his gaze still sharp on Nate, before his eyes rested on Matteo, he clenched his jaw before he walked past Greg and headed outside, Matteo looked at Greg, his eyes moving to Nate before he followed Spade outside, leaving both father and son in the study.
Spade's steps were not rushed but he took long strides down the hall and down the stairs before he stepped into the living room, his eyes raked through the living room again, feeling as if he was missing something before he walked out of the house, Matteo hot on his trail, the blonde followed him closely until they both got into the car, Spade was trying so hard to maintain his cool, calm and collected facade but he was a ball of nerves inside, the moment he entered into his car, he pulled open the glove compartment and pulled out a cigarette, lighting it up with a lighter, he put the lean stick in between his lips and took a drag.
Letting the hot feeling seep down his throat and move through his veins, he felt himself relax a bit as he smoked on the stick. Matteo just watched him. He'd never seen Spade struggle with anything before, everything came so easy for him, but for the past few weeks he'd seem to struggle with this whole Miller kid situation, the Lost of his shipment and everything else.
Spade let out a deep breath, smoke wafting out of his mouth and nose at the same time. He had tried all he could to stop himself from saying anything to Nate, or even acknowledging his presence but it was hard, the idea was easy when he thought of it but doing it was actually the hard part, especially with him looking at him like that.
He didn't even mean to threaten the kid again but he did, he seemed to be doing that quite often, as that was the only thing he was used to doing, that was the only way he could talk to Nate, the only way he knew to get this fuzzy feeling out of his system, the only thing that could contain this obsession inside of him, growing everyday.
He threw out the half smoked cigarette and put his car to life before driving out of the compound. He had other issues he was supposed to be dealing with, but Nate was proving to be the biggest of them all. And now true to Matteo's words, the only thing that could still make him see the kid, have a connection with the kid, was gone.
He wasn't in the least bit bothered about losing the girl, because she'd already signed the contract, it was still valid and with or without her, he'd still carry out his plans, but he knew that without her, his chance of ever getting to understand and decipher this strange feeling he was getting for Nate was gone forever.
Nate would never let him get close, even if all he did Everytime he got close to the kid was threaten him. How did he even come to this? Stressing and pulling his hair over someone else, someone that was either Matteo or him.
He let out a deep breath and focused on the road, 48 hours was enough time for him to come up with something, anything at all that would allow him see Nate again.
Even if it meant changing the rules of the contract, he didn't care if he couldn't get the girl any longer, he didn't care about her, he never did.
There was always only one person that made him so interested in this contract. One person that pissed and ticked him off in ways no one had ever done, he aroused something in him that he never knew he had, a part of him he never knew existed. He was infuriating and at the same time fascinating, he wanted to understand him but at the same time put him at arm's length.
Everything about Nate was so confusing to him. It made his head ache, and it relaxed him The more he thought about it the more he craved to feel more. To know what it would feel like to run his hands through Nate's brown, almost dusty hair, that tingling feeling he got whenever their skin touched, even if it was just a brush. The way his stomach dropped watching him smile at the casino. The way his eyes moved and widened when he pressed him to the wall
Everything about Nate was everything Spade's body craved for, trying hard to deny it to himself was only making it worse. How long would he keep fighting it, he didn't quite understand what it was yet, but he wanted to. He couldn't keep living in what ifs and assumptions.
