Maybe the voice was right Maybe that was all he was good for, being a puppet, a chew toy that could be discarded off anytime. He was beginning to think there was a connection between himself and Spade but he was wrong.
The man was only around for as long as he proved useful, but the question was what exactly was he useful for, he hadn't even done anything for Spade, if it were to be considered, Spade was the one that had done something for him.
It was making his head ache the more he thought about it. He'd seen Spade's car parked outside yesterday and today but when he asked Matteo, the blonde had told him Spade had gone out to settle some business.
He'd asked the blonde if Spade was avoiding him but Matteo assured him that Spade was just very busy with a lot of things, things Matteo couldn't tell him, Spade was in a better position to explain it to him.
He didn't even know why he was bothering himself about whether Spade was infact avoiding him or not, it's not like they had a thing going on, as far as he knew Spade didn't even see it that way or any way.
He was probably overthinking the whole thing, Spade made it clear that they were just friends, that didn't make it okay for Nate to feel entitled to Spade's time and attention. He was beginning to sound whiny like an attention seeking bitch.
He shook his head and focused back on the piece of paper in front of him, remembering just then that he had found something he wanted to show Bernie earlier on, but the man wasn't even around.
Speaking of Bernie, he'd only spent only 24 hours with him but he realized he wasn't as bad as he thought, not that he thought Bernie was bad, but the guy was in the mafia. Nate believed anyone involved in the mafia weren't exactly the kind of people you'd consider as being good, not even Matteo, but getting close to them, he realized they were much better than what he'd imagined.
Bernie for example, was quite soft and gentle with him, he didn't act the way he appeared, he looked scary but he acted way different than that, the way he explained things to Nate and patiently listened to him whenever Nate was explaining something to him, it made him question his judgement of the underworld.
But he'd also seen the bad part, like the event where Spade had shot someone in cold blood while Matteo watched, the party that killed Liam and the thing that happened to him years ago, and a few countless others.
He decided to stop thinking about all that and go look for Matteo, that is if the blonde had come already. He got up slowly, picking up the piece of paper and walking out of the office.
The makeshift office wasn't too far off from Spade's office, it was on the same corridor, but Nate's was the last on the left, while Spade's was the third on the same left, leaving just two other doors in between both offices.
He looked down the corridor and it was empty, there was nothing to indicate that anyone was here, there wasn't a single soul and he didn't hear a single sound.
He let out a deep breath before walking down the corridor, headed for the dancefloor club area downstairs, maybe he'd find someone there that'll tell him where either Bernie or Matteo was, or maybe he'd even see Spade.
He sighed out, before taking slowly steps through the corridor, he walked past Spade's office, but something pulled him back, he stopped and took two steps backwards, stopping in front of the door. He didn't know if it was unlocked or Matteo was actually saying that truth and he had gone out.
He grounded his teeth together and chewed on his bottom lip, feeling the softness. He sucked on his lips before letting go off it with a pop sound Something was tugging at him and telling him that he should go in, but what if Spade was not in, but then again another thought crossed his mind, what if Spade was inside and he was right, Spade was avoiding him.
He looked through the corridor, from the left to the right, it was still very quiet, he looked at the paper in his hands, maybe he should just walk away, he turned around facing the direction which he initially wanted to go.
Taking a step, he felt that pull again, making him stop in his tracks, he turned around and faced the door. He let out a deep breath before placing his hand around the doorknob, he twisted it open, shutting his eyes tight, he pushed and the door opened to his utmost surprise
He stepped into the cold room, Spade's scent immediately wafting through his nose, almost knocking him down. His eyes moved up and only now did he realize what he'd just walked into
Spade was in the office, against his better judgement but he wasn't alone. Nate's lips parted slightly as he digested the sight in front of him, letting it sink into his bones and brains.
The bartender, the one he always met when he used to always come to find Spade, the one he'd come to know as Scarlett, she had her hands all over Spade and his hands were securely wrapped around her waist, he looked too late but with the way they stood, he knew they were either kissing and he interrupted, or they were about to kiss.
He felt his heart hammering with intensity inside his chest, making him to gasp out inaudibly, he felt a pang in his chest, like a sting but much more painful like a stab wound.
He looked up and his eyes met with Spade, he quickly realized he was intruding "I'm sorry.... I didn't mean to.... The door was unlocked..." He rambled on, trying to not to look at Spade's piercing gaze, burning holes into every cell and bone in his body.
He didn't know which was making him completely discombobulated, was it the fact that he was feeling anger bubbling inside of him that he'd walked in on Spade in such a compromising position, or the way Spade was currently looking at him.
His eyes moved to Spade's hands around the lady's waist and they slowly dropped, as he shoved his hands into his pocket, narrowing his eyes on Nate.
He quickly turned around about to leave when Spade's deep voice resonated through the whole room, stopping him dead in his tracks "Wait"
Spade's eyes moved to the person in front of him and he didn't need to say much before she scurried out of the office, with Nate's back to him, he didn't know what was going through the young man's mind, but he knew what was going through his.
He wasn't about to do anything with Scarlett, if at all he was trying to pry her filthy hands off him when Nate walked in, he didn't even know this would happen, and the fact that he'd been avoiding Nate didn't make him feel any better.
Since Friday, today would be the first time he'd be seeing Nate again, and everything inside him was in crisis. It was like his own body was fighting him, calling him to order for staying away from Nate for this long.
Nate slowly turned around and his brown eyes met with Spade's grey eyes, Spade didn't know if he was feeling guilty for what Nate had just walked in on, or he was feeling guilty for ignoring Nate for the past five days. He grounded his teeth together as his whole body began to ache, itch and crave for Nate, making him wonder how he'd managed to stay away from Nate for this long.
His eyes landed on Nate's lips, it was set in a thin line, as his eyes did everything in their power to avoid Spade's gaze, the longer they both stood there, the more intense and thick the tension in the office became.
"I'm sorry I barged into your office" Nate's small and tender voice made him fix his eyes on Nate's black thick lashes as they batted on their own, shielding his eyes from Spade's view, he clenched his hands inside his pants pocket, his heart was beginning to beat fast, and loud he could almost hear it's rhythm. He hadn't heard Nate's voice in a while, even though it was just four days, to him it felt like months, or even years. "I didn't think you were in, Matteo told me you weren't in, but I had something I wanted to show you so I thought I'd find Matteo here but.." he paused his rambling, slowly raising his eyes up, he sucked in a breath when his eyes met with Spade's grey ones, staring at him intently, reading him, as if Spade's gaze would break through his body and see deep inside his soul.
He wanted to cower away and hide in a far away place and where Spade would never see him but what use would it be? "I didn't mean to walk in on you and.." he paused thinking of what to say next, as Spade watched him, like a predator watching it's prey.
"Me and what"? His velvety, deep and thick voice, that Nate didn't think would still have an effect on him after all these while, rang through the whole room, making Nate to suck in a inaudible harsh breath, he was wrong, Spade's voice still had the same effect it always had on him, he resisted the urge to tremble visibly.
He swallowed, thinking of ways to answer Spade's question, but what would he say, Spade's what? "Your uhm...." He stuttered, pointing to the door, hoping Spade would understand, but he cocked his brows and tilted his head sideways, as his lips tilted in a half smirk. "Your...." Nate stuttered again, feeling the words elude him
"My what"? Spade teased, Nate felt his cheek heat up, as he lowered his head, suddenly finding his shoes interesting to look at, the black was exceptionally shiny today, hmm that's new.
Spade saw the tint of red that adorned his pale cheeks, making him look as cute as an Easter bunny, and when he lowered his head, confirming to Spade that the situation indeed made him uncomfortable, Spade smiled. "She's not my girlfriend, if that's what you were about to say"
He looked up quickly, almost as if he whipped his head up, his mouth formed an 'o' before he quickly closed those lips that were suddenly calling out to Spade.
Being away from Nate for this long, the urge to suddenly have a taste of those lips was overwhelming, like a drug he needed to have at all cost, he swallowed and looked away from the lips before he would close the distance between them and ravish those lips like there was no tomorrow, he still had a little self control in him. "Yes, she doesn't mean anything to me" he declared as if assuring Nate that he had nothing to worry about, his tone was gentle and soothing
Suddenly feeling the anger of what he'd walked in on a few seconds ago, and the fact that Spade had in fact been avoiding him for days, while he was here doing God knows what with Scarlett. "Yet she's the one with you in the office while I was told you were out" he muttered out, obviously to himself but Spade heard him, making him clench his jaw. He knew sooner or later Nate would make mention of that, he had specifically told Matteo and Bernie to tell Nate that he wasn't in the club, while he was in.
He could hear the tinge of anger in Nate's tone as he spoke, making him wonder if it was.... No it couldn't be. He's probably just mad he had to suddenly put up with Bernie in his absence, remembering that Nate wasn't overly fond of Bernie.
"I've been kind of busy lately, and I didn't want you waiting on me before starting work" he lied smoothly through his own teeth, but he had to, he couldn't just tell Nate that he was in fact avoiding him, he would never understand.
"Yeah I see that" Nate retorted back, his voice coming out sharper and more sarcastic than he intended, but right now, his mind was getting clouded, first with the voice that had been telling him Spade had discarded of him, maybe the voice was right. Then there was the fact that he was in fact right, Spade was avoiding him, and then him walking in on the man and Scarlett, and here he was lying to his face. Not that Spade owed him anything but the emotional part of him that hoped Spade may have liked him at some point, was clawing and feeling betrayed.
And to think he was beginning to trust Spade. 'they're all liars' the voice in his head, peeled out again.
The more he stared at Spade, the angrier he got, and he didn't want to say something that would lead to regret. "I should go, I'll come back at a better time, obviously this one isn't" he muttered before turning around to leave.
