It had been less than a day; yet, it felt like weeks since Lyle had stepped foot inside the city. Lyle's hands stung due to how hot it was. Even the gloves were having a difficult time cooling it down. Another thing I should work on. I've been too focused on physical strength. Even if the adrenaline was calming down, Lyle still had his guard up. There was always a chance that the SF trial was not over yet.
Upon entering the city, Lyle would've felt relief upon seeing the familiar infrastructures, felt calm breathing in an air that wasn't teeming with apparitions, and felt less secluded entering civilisation again if it weren't for the crowd of cameras and microphones that flooded the city's entrance.
Camera shutters and flashing lights that jarred against the night, loud chatter from news reporters, and eager shouts from civilians. There were vehement fans scoping out who to idolise, anxious or critical individuals assessing the survivors, regular civilians who were excited to see who survived the SF trial, and so forth.
"What the hell," Lyle mumbled, glaring at the cameras. "Can everyone just fuck off?"
Amias still had you in his arms. His jacket was off and was draped over you. Upon seeing the cameras, Amias placed your hoodie over your face and hid you from the public.
"They're blocking the way," Amias said. "(Y/n) needs treatment."
There was a narrow space for the SF candidates to walk through. A few defence and offence force members were around who were acting as bodyguards to control the crowd, but it wasn't enough.
"Normally I'd like the attention, but even I'm getting a frustrated." Cecil sighed, a hand running through his hair. "I don't look my best as well."
"I can hide you guys from the crowd if you'd like," Finn suggested with his usual friendly smile. Lyle wondered if Finn had somehow hammered it permanently into his expression. How the hell does he not look the slightest bit annoyed?
Cecil perked up. "I'll take you up on that offer."
Sara sighed uneasily, but showed a friendly smile to the crowd before mumbling under her breath, "It's so loud."
Jade nodded, sticking close to Sara. "It'll be over soon."
"It's doing a wonderful job testing my patience," Elias said, his irritable voice drowned by the crowd as he maintained a neutral expression to the public.
Caleb slapped the brunet's back out of literally nowhere. Elias looked too done with life to care.
"You didn't have your coffee, right? I'll make some for you!"
"You always make it too sweet."
"Apparently a single grain of sugar is too sweet for our prince charming here." Caleb nudged Amias. "He's the weird one, right?"
Amias chuckled softly and simply nodded his head.
Diverting Lyle's focus from the others, the device on his wrist flashed and made a beeping sound. Ah, so now it was working properly. It was a real hindrance having some of the features restricted during the SF trial.
I wonder how the technology design division managed to do that. My guess is on Eve.
There was a message on the device stating that the SF trial was over. Everyone had an hour to wash up and do whatever (it didn't actually say 'whatever', Lyle just skimmed through some parts) before they had to go to the main hall for the announcement for the SF trial results.
Unlike during the first phase of the trial and during the banquet, there was a proper announcement that the SF trial was finished. The chairman wouldn't deceive people with such a cheap trick. Meaning, the SF trial was now truly officially over.
"Sheesh, barely anytime for rest. The chairman's ruthless as ever." Caleb shrugged. "I guess I can sneak in some ice cream before the announcement."
Elias almost looked horrified. "You have the stomach for that?"
"I'm going to ask the support team to treat (Y/n)," Amias said.
"Oh, I'll come with Miss Support! Ice cream can wait."
Amias showed a thankful smile, but he shook his head. "It's okay. I can go on my own."
In a blink of an eye, Amias disappeared and left a few fleeting sparks of electricity. The crowd gasped and exchanged frantic glances.
"Did you catch that on camera?!"
"That was teleportation, right? I saw bits of it when they aired the SF trial!"
Lyle ignored the crowd and continued walking. An obvious question weighed his mind:
How did Amias suddenly get so much power?
Lyle remembered when Amias exorcised all of the apparitions swiftly and almost effortlessly––it looked like he was testing his abilities rather than fighting seriously. The area was set ablaze with electricity and Amias constantly used his teleportation without getting fatigued. In fact, it seemed like the more he used his abilities, the more powerful he got.
Ugh, whatever.
Lyle was too mentally and physically exhausted to think too deeply about it. And plus, he didn't care that much anyway.
When he finally entered the AEI building, he wasted no time washing up and changing into a new set of clothes. Lyle made a quick meal using leftovers from the fridge and made sure to drink a healthy amount of water. Feeling refreshed and energised, he arrived at the main hall. Almost everyone was there already. Guess people were too anxious to wait in their rooms.
After a closer look, Lyle realised that there were camera men around the spacious hall. They were wearing the uniforms from the members of the TDD division. The announcement was probably going to be shown live.
Lyle sat on an isolated seat and surveyed those in the hall. Some looked incredibly apprehensive, others looked annoyingly confident, a few were trying to distract themselves by conversing with others, and many were simply quiet as they were too exhausted from the SF trial.
Oh, Brynn's here.
She was part of Lyle's offence team. The woman looked composed and she faced the front without engaging in much conversation. She looked confident. Though, it was evident that she sustained a lot of injuries.
"I won!"
It was Caleb's voice––of course it was.
Caleb and Cecil were playing cards while Amias observed silently, presumably zoning out every now and then. Probably worried about you. Were you and Amias childhood friends or something? At this point, Lyle would associate Amias with you instinctively with how attached the male was to you.
Elias was tying up Sara's hair for her as she did her nails. Jade and Finn were having a casual conversation with Caleb interrupting them every now and then. The other SF candidates looked at the group in a mix of disbelief, admiration, and apprehension. As always, that group was lively.
It was only missing you now.
She'll survive. (Y/n) is too stubborn to die so quickly.
Lyle spent the time silently reflecting on his training schedule. Was he worried about the SF results? Truth be told, he was confident in his abilities and strengths. Experience wise, he obviously fell short compared to the original SF members.
If the assessment for the SF trial was based on who was competent, then Lyle had a good idea of the team. Jade, Cecil, Amias, and (Y/n) had crucial moments where the spotlight was on them. Unlike a lot of the SF candidates, those four actually fought without trying to drag others down or looking for an easy way to survive the trial.
"Sure, let's say that was the case." You stood up, maintaining eye contact. "But what does it have to do with you? If you see me lose an arm, it's on me. If you find me dead, it's on me. You can disagree with my actions, but don't order me around. I don't understand why you're so irritated with me when nothing involves you. We're not close friends and we have no past together. I'll appreciate it if you respect me as a candidate and get off my case. If seeing the sight of me training annoys you, deal with it or choose another time to train."
You said those words to Lyle before the SF trial. He grimaced upon recalling them. Before, he was too stubborn to take them into consideration. Looking back at it now, you were right. Lyle brought his past to the present and involved you in it. You didn't do anything wrong.
And I almost killed her because of it.
Conversations and murmurs within the hall ceased the moment a certain figure stepped onto the stage; the chairman. His presence was as imposing as ever, there was something about his controlled movements that Lyle found intimidating. It felt like no matter what kind of event unfolded, the chairman would have several plans to counter it. The man was never caught off guard in the most innate manner possible.
Holographic screens flashed above the stage and displayed those within the hall. Lyle could imagine citizens watching intensely through their devices, at home, on the billboards. This was a crucial moment. The SF, the main team that leads everyone else to protect the city from apparition. The face of the AEI, the faces everyone relied on.
The whole city was watching.
After getting past formalities, the chairman said,
"It was incredible observing the hard work and effort the candidates put in. The trial was arduous and tested abilities, strengths, experience, and critical thinking. Through careful observation, nine individuals have been selected."
It wasn't a surprise to many that not all the survivors would make it to the team. Though, a few were caught off guard and Lyle overheard select sentences.
"Shoot... I thought if I survived then I..."
"No... No... What if I don't make it?"
"Maybe, maybe I have a chance."
Of course there would be panic. If you didn't make it, everyone in the city would know. The humiliation, social ridicule, ostracisation––it could destroy anyone mentally. You'd live your life with everyone labelling you as a failure, someone who had an honourable opportunity and wasted it. It seemed unfair, it seemed immoral; however, that was just how the public worked. That was how much they valued the SF.
"Here are the new members of the speciality force."
A screen was projected behind the chairman. Lyle almost had a hard time breathing because of how thick the tension and panic was in the air. A picture next to the individual's full name, age, and previous division; that was what was shown. Everyone leaned forward and scanned rapidly, desperately hoping to find themselves.
When Lyle found his name and photo, his muscles relaxed. He then proceeded to examine who else made it.
Pretty much what I expected. Though, I thought Brynn might've had a small chance.
Lyle glanced at his former offence member. The redhead's face was pale and her expression was contorted in denial. Panic began to settle in for everyone else as reality crushed them. Many shook their heads frantically, others burst into tears and sobbed as if the chairman would somehow accept them in the team out of pity.
Once eager candidates ready to take on the trial and become highly respected individuals now rendered into complete messes.
Something didn't sit right with Lyle. Was there really a need to publicly shame them so deeply? He shook the thought off. This was normal, everyone expected this. If the AEI wasn't harsh, then people would not take the SF seriously. That was all.
Lyle looked over to the group where Elias and the others were. The atmosphere was drastically different as if they were in another world.
Sara happily told everyone that she would be on a shopping spree so that they could all match accessories as a team. Finn kindly congratulated everyone with a friendly pat on the back and thumbs up. Caleb pulled out snacks to celebrate. Yes, all the snacks were sweet.
"I'm looking forward to working with everyone! And I hope we can celebrate with (Y/n) when she wakes up," Amias said.
Jade placed a reassuring hand on Amias's shoulder in response to that. Cecil took out his phone and snapped a picture with everyone caught off guard. After a few protests from Sara and Caleb, Cecil retook it.
"Being an SF member will bring in more customers~ Ah, I can't wait. By the way, does anyone have social media so I can tag them?"
Caleb raised a hand. "I do!"
"Oh, I didn't know that. What's the name?"
"xxxXXCalebxxXXxx29839269."
"What."
Amias asked, "What about (Y/n)?"
"Photoshop," Caleb chimed in as Cecil desperately tried to search for Caleb's user name. "Trust me, I have a great photo of her."
Cecil hummed in amusement. "We can also take another photo later when she wakes up from her beauty sleep."
Lyle noticed that Jade was quiet, deep in thought. Finn and Elias only observed as everyone else carried on with their antics. Some SF candidates shot them dirty and envied looks. Lyle wouldn't be surprised if some wanted to attack them out of pure frustration.
Lyle leaned back in his chair. I'll be working with them as well... He wondered if he would fit in.
Suddenly, a voice of protest was in the crowd.
"(Y/n) made it? But she was unconscious towards the end!"
"Yeah! She needed to be carried! How is she suitable to be an SF member?"
"She used to be in the Support division. Does she even have proper exorcism abilities?"
Commotion surfaced. Desperate people with nothing to lose gained a moment of bravery to question the chairman. To anyone else, they would've looked insane. The chairman's expression didn't change. All he did was readjust the mic on the podium he was standing behind as if their desperate protests were simply idle chatter. The commotion only grew louder, and the chairman cleared his throat in response.
"It seems like there are disagreements." A small glimmer of hope was in the expressions of many. "So, I'd like for those who spoke to step up to the front. Then, inform me of one pivotal moment in the trial involving them."
The chairman's authoritative voice made everyone shut up immediately. Rationality finally came back to some––they were challenging the chairman out of all people.
"That wasn't a suggestion." The chairman shook his head. "No matter. Those without confidence don't deserve a voice.
People lowered their gazes and avoided eye contact.
"For those at home, do not be alarmed. The members selected are more than capable," the chairman said. "In regards to Caleb, Amias, Sara, and Finn, I'm certain an explanation is not required to validate their strengths. I'll discuss the new members."
The screen changed and showed several video clips of Cecil in action during the SF trial. In one of them, Cecil winked at the camera. Lyle faintly heard Cecil mention something along the lines of 'wow, I'm surprised that they got my good side.'
"Cecil's unique ability is extremely versatile. The ability to overpower strong apparitions with ease, skillfully conceal his presence, control his exorcism abilities from various distances, and his experience from being the head from the operation design division allows him to be efficient in assessing situations."
The screen changed and video clips of Amias were displayed.
"Amias's ability to teleport has significant potential. Despite his lack of experience, he has been improving rapidly with every apparition he exorcises. Furthermore, his compassion and attitude to put others before himself suggests that he is willing to abide by the AEI's motto." The chairman looked at Amias with an encouraging nod. "I trust that you will work hard."
Amias sat a little straight and nodded back at the chairman. The screen changed to Jade. One of the videos displayed her helping out fellow injured SF candidates.
"An exorcism ability taking form into a physical weapon, specifically a blade. Jade has incredible endurance and her skillful use of her abilities will prove to be reliable. Similarly to Amias, her consideration of others aligns with the AEI's purpose. She has immense talent when it comes to protecting others."
Lyle raised an eyebrow when the screen changed to him.
"Some of you at home may be familiar with Lyle. His parents were reliable offence members––" Lyle's gaze narrowed slightly when the chairman said 'were'. "––and his special ability is especially worth mentioning. He has the capability to target long distances with significant accuracy; I am certain with a little work with the technology design division his abilities can be enchanted."
Then, the screen flickered to you. The atmosphere in the room shifted as the candidates waited for the chairman's assessment. Lyle can imagine some of them judging you for themselves. He rolled his eyes at that.
"(Y/n) is a unique one. Time and time again she has developed new abilities that defy the norm. It is difficult to assess exactly what she can do, but it's certain that she has the closest connection to apparitions. She has the potential to lead the AEI in a different path, one that doesn't only protect the city from apparitions, but stops the core issue. Of course, that all depends on her. Is it not common sense to allow someone like that to be part of the specialty force?"
The chairman continued. "I am sure everyone at home is aware of the issue regarding apparitions evolving, becoming stronger as the years progress. The same approach will not solve the issue. A variety of skills that goes beyond simple exorcism is crucial to adapt to the changing conditions; being close minded is foolish."
Damn, you really got the spotlight during the announcement. One quick glance towards his right and Lyle saw Amias beaming happily at your honourable mention. Lyle, on the other hand, remembered an exchange from a few months ago; it was when you received your letter to participate in the SF trial.
"The chairman saw potential in her, that is all," Elias said.
"Potential? You mean how useless she was during the last operation?"
"I personally believe she can be a very useful addition to the team."
Lyle scoffed. "What? As bait? She'd probably fail at that too."
Wow, he felt like an idiot now. Lyle was so blinded with his narrow ideals that he simply assumed you weren't anything special or capable of improving––no, it was because he saw the previous support leader in you and didn't want you to die.
Honestly, Lyle wasn't entirely sure what to think. Yes, underestimating people is bad and he should not push his ideals onto others; however, what if you weren't able to handle the trial? What was he supposed to do? In the scenario where someone who was unsuited to handle danger, was he supposed to just let them die? Not everyone's life was his business, but...
"As (Y/n) is currently recovering, she will be collecting her uniform at a later time. Can those who have been selected come up to the stage and collect their jackets."
The chairman didn't even try to offer words of reassurance. No remorse for those currently distraught, huh?
"Pft, this seems familiar," Caleb joked, walking alongside Elias.
"Maybe I can stylise this new set of jackets," Sara wondered aloud.
Lyle walked ahead of the group and kept a fair distance. Lyle could feel the cameras' eyes, eyes that held the suffocating weight of public expectations. Lyle shook hands with the chairman. Lyle was one of the taller ones in the AEI, but the chairman was at least a head taller. The man had a strong grip, a friendly wrinkled smile, and kind brown eyes––well, kind in this moment. Someone who seemed reliable, but also so inaccessible; that was the chairman.
"Congratulations."
"Thank you."
Lyle wondered what his parents would feel if they saw him in this moment. Proud? Happy? Concerned that he was going to be in danger a lot more often? In fact, how did he feel? Validated of his strength? That he was no longer the weak child that would burden everyone?
He wasn't sure.
Everyone else was given their uniform. Flashes of cameras shone, glorifying the new SF members whilst those who failed drowned in despair and can only look at the bright lights so far out of their reach. Those on stage were handed a microphone and was asked to share a few words. Before that could happen, there was an interruption.
"Reconsider!"
Lyle knew who it was before he saw her face. He held back the urge to sigh out of frustration. It was Brynn. She took a shaky yet resolute step forward.
"I'm capable of being part of the speciality force! A week––no, give me a couple of days. I'll prove my worth! Lyle! You'd know, right?"
Lyle remained silent. Was she seriously dragging him into this? The two weren't close, she just stayed by his side a little more than others because he was the leader of the dispatch. He was someone whose strength exceeded those within his team. Lyle doubted she cared about him as a person.
The chairman's expression didn't change. Not a twitch of an eyebrow––nothing. Lyle wondered if Elias learnt to control his expression from him. It was impressive.
"Brynn, am I correct?" The woman nodded. "Very well then, Brynn. If I mentioned that adding an additional member to the speciality force would prove to be difficult, what would you say?"
Brynn wasted no time. "Replace (Y/n) with me. She doesn't have to go back to being a support member. You mentioned that she has the closest connection with apparitions, that doesn't help in scenarios during an apparition attack. She can't even exorcise a simple wave of apparitions, how is that reliable? Put her in a different role, maybe even the technology design division––"
"I disagree."
Of course Amias would stand up for you. Elias gave Amias a warning look, but that was ignored.
"What?" Brynn sighed exasperatedly. "Like I said, she could be transferred somewhere else since she is only useful for her connection to apparitions."
"(Y/n) is more than capable beyond her connection to apparitions. Please don't put her down like that," Amias said. He was trying to level his tone and not let his anger seep into it. "Don't act like you're better than her."
Brynn wasn't backing down. "I'm stating the truth. Without exorcism abilities––"
"What do you even have against her? Wasn't she the one who saved you?!" Amias snapped.
Even Lyle was caught off guard, it was the first time he had seen Amias snap at someone other than himself.
With a scoff, the woman replied, "Are you just defending her because she's a close friend or something? That makes me question your reliability as an SF member. If you get emotional so easily, how can the public trust you?"
"What?"
Unbeknownst to Amias, electricity began sparking around him. Oh, Brynn was trying to get him worked up. There were cameras and she was taking advantage of it. Sure, she was disadvantaged due to not making it in the force; however, making Amias look bad and her look good can be helpful to her. It was dirty.
Lyle sighed. If Amias got into trouble, it'd affect you as well. He stepped in and held Amias's shoulder. Golden eyes pierced Lyle with animosity.
"Give it up," Lyle whispered. "No matter what Brynn says, (Y/n) will still be in the speciality force."
Amias grabbed Lyle's arm and ripped it off his shoulder. Lyle wasn't using his full strength, but he was still caught off guard by Amias's power. His gaze wasn't any less hostile when he locked eyes with Lyle.
"Please don't interrupt."
Amias teleported down the stage right in front of Brynn. Caught off guard, she stumbled back. Amias grabbed her hand before she could fall. For someone mad, he was pretty considerate––oh, wait. Upon further inspection, Lyle saw that Amias's grip on Brynn's arm was extremely tense. Her arm was becoming red. The woman cried in pain, but Amias didn't let go. At this point, the entire hall was watching the conflict. The chairman was observing carefully.
"I don't see the issue in defending a fellow member of the specialty force. If anything, your selfish thought goes against the AEI's purpose."
Amias glanced towards the other SF candidates and he finally let go of Brynn's arm.
"This is a message for all of you. Who were the ones who tried to kill (Y/n) the moment it was suspected that she was possessed? Would you treat the citizens the same way? Why were we competing with each other? We're up against apparitions. Teamwork wasn't forbidden. Prioritising yourself for survival is one thing, but actively harming others when there is clearly another option is just... horrible. That kind of thinking––does that align with the AEI's purpose?"
Despite being driven by his emotions, Amias made a very good point. Yes, the objective of the SF trial was to survive. There were no rules for foul play or that you couldn't hurt others. However, that didn't mean you had to compete with others. The trial tested adaptability, competence, and also one's character.
At Amias's words, no one was able to retaliate.
The chairman chuckled. Wait––the chairman chuckled?
With a slow clap and a hint of a satisfied smile, the chairman said, "I believe that resolves the conflict. Now, shall we continue with the assembly?"
===
"And that's what happened."
You sat in silence, soaking up the information. There was so much you really thought you'd malfunction.
First of all, the chairman's analysis of you. You had no idea if he thought of you well or not. Yes, it sounded like he thought highly of you; but, you would not be surprised if he was suspicious of your strange ability. You were nervous since you had never properly talked to the chairman face to face––heck, you were apprehensive talking to him when playing the game.
Next, Amias. His mini lecture was similar to the one in the game; however, the catalyst was different and his execution was less hostile.
Originally, Amias said something along the lines of:
"One of my concerns was how hostile everyone was. I don't think there was a rule against working together... So maybe things could have turned out differently if everyone cooperated. Nonetheless, I wish everyone luck! Even if you didn't make it, your strengths are still valid."
In the original storyline, it wasn't you that people disagreed upon. It was just the chairman and how 'unfair' his assessment was. That was the commotion.
"Lyle, you said Amias suddenly grew stronger, right?"
He nodded. "Any ideas? Not that you have to tell me, but I won't be turning down an explanation."
Why would that happen? Sure the game had levelling systems, but it didn't grant power as drastically as how Lyle described it.
Hah... So much to think about. Tis what happens when I involve myself in the plot.
"I have no clue."
"Fair enough."
The conversation ended there. There could be more to discuss if you thought about things harder, but your mind was foggy since you were sick.
"So..." God, why did you start it off so awkwardly? "Guess I won't be joining you in your early morning training sessions anymore. I am not getting up so early."
"Good. It'll be peaceful."
"Hey." You laughed and shook your head. "By the way, do the others know you're taking care of me?"
"No. But if they have a problem with it, it's up to you to explain things to them."
You playfully rolled your eyes. "Thanks for shoving the responsibility onto me."
Lyle scoffed and you believed it was his version of chuckling. He stood up.
"I'll leave now. Get some rest."
"Thank you, Lyle." You smiled. "For going out of your way to get medicine and all. You didn't get any rest yet, right?"
Lyle shrugged. "It's whatever. I tried to kill you, this is not even close enough to set things right."
You frowned. "Hey, Lyle. I don't want our friendship to be some form of debt you need to repay. Hang out with me because you want to, not because of obligation. You didn't try to kill me out of malice. Sure, your past and all doesn't justify it; however, because I don't think you're a bad person I'm willing to put it in the past."
Lyle was silent. "(Y/n)."
"Hm?"
"You're a little too understanding."
"Thanks?"
Lyle shook his head. "You're a sympathetic person. It's a good and bad thing. There are people who take advantage of that." He looked at you. "You should get mad sometimes, too."
And with that, you were left alone. You sighed and took your medicine.
I do get mad, though.
You knew that wasn't what Lyle meant, but you were still confused on what exactly he meant. Was it so wrong to try and understand others?
"The injections, the test runs, the serum, the thirst for revenge and how the chairman wants to monopolise it; the list goes on. It's funny how you know all about us, but that's not enough to convince me to cooperate with you." It spread its arms out theatrically. "You're better off getting rid of me! Don't try to play the role of my therapist. It pisses me off."
You grimaced. Did you have some sort of hero or saviour complex? No, that doesn't sound right. You didn't want to 'save' or 'fix' people. It was just...
This is giving me a headache.
You'll have a mental crisis on your identity another time. You sighed and laid down in your bed and mumbled, "I made it to the speciality force."
God, this all felt so surreal. Just a few months ago you were a regular person living an ordinary life. Sometimes you'd miss the monotony since it was less taxing. But, having a goal and being constantly active everyday made things lively. There will definitely be stress along the way, tons of conflict, but you needed to press on forward.
Maybe it was only a matter of time until your old life would simply be memories of the past.
"This is a little exciting..." you mumbled. "Alright! I'll work hard to improve––ow, okay headache. Don't shout when you're sick."
As you were about to call it a night, you suddenly remembered about Alastor and the others.
"Oh my god, how did they slip my mind?"
You sat up again and summoned the book. Immediately, the apparitions appeared. Huh, you didn't need to rip the pages anymore. Alastor, Alec, Sam, Copper and Mochi. Looks like the whole family's here.
"Hey guys––"
You were promptly cut off when Sam rushed in for a hug. But upon realising you were injured, she hesitated.
"Big sister!" She smiled widely, but it was a little wobbly. "You're back! Hey, hey, do you want to..." The child swallowed, her breath a little shaky. "I mean––uh... I..." She avoided your gaze. "I..."
First it was a sniffle, then a choked sob. It didn't take long for her to burst into tears and began crying waterfalls. If you weren't injured and sick, you would've rushed to her side immediately. With a wince, you lifted your blanket and began standing up.
"Sam––"
"Wait, don't stand up!" She patted your arms gently, ushering you to go back to bed. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry––I––"
You gently hushed the girl. "Sam, it's okay! I'm okay now, don't cry––or cry. Let out your emotions. Don't worry."
Luckily, the walls were thick and rooms were far away from each other. But even if they weren't, you weren't worried about getting caught with apparitions. You just wanted to comfort Sam.
"I..." Her sobs were a little quieter. The child wiped away her tears and coughed a little. "I wasn't strong. The––the bad ghost hurt you and I..."
You pulled her in for a hug and patted her back. "It's okay, none of it is your fault."
Her voice was muffled in your clothes as she said something along the lines of 'I didn't want you to die'. You glanced over at the other apparitions. Alec was on the verge of tears and you motioned for him to come closer. The child wordlessly accepted your embrace and it was only a matter of seconds for him to cry just as much as his twin sister.
Copper was avoiding eye contact and his small hands clenched tightly. He approached you and gently punched your arm––well, would you even consider it a punch? It felt like a tap.
"I'm mad."
You smiled. "Okay."
Your voice wasn't teasing, it was quiet and understanding.
Copper faced you. "I'm really––" His voice cracked and his eyes became glossy. The child wiped his eyes in frustration. "I'm really mad!"
You nodded.
"I'm sorry for jumping into danger and worrying you guys."
Mochi licked away Copper's tears and he huffed in frustration at the wolf, but you knew he was thankful. The wolf then hopped onto your bed and laid down. His large tail wrapped protectively around you and also gave you a light smack on the face. You laughed. Looks like Mochi was a little mad at your recklessness, too.
"You..." Alastor sighed. He sat down on the chair Lyle was on before. "God, you gave me a heart attack. When the irregular apparition made Lyle stab your stomach..."
Alastor sighed again, more stressed this time. You felt guilty seeing so many tears shed for you.
"I'm sorry everyone."
It wasn't like your previous life where you lacked connections with others. Here, you knew people cared about you, but seeing it like this made you realise it even more. You appreciated it and warmth filled your heart.
I was really reckless when I tried to help Brynn. And she ended up turning against you. Wonderful.
"The situation was out of your control. Well, some of it. Next time, think about the people you'll worry, okay?" Alastor said. "I... Some of it is my fault, too. I should've been stronger to fend off the irregular apparition when it possessed you."
"Alastor, it's not––" You stopped yourself and became thoughtful for a moment. "Alright, instead of playing the blame game, how about this." The apparition twins let go of you and stared at you curiously. "Let's all get stronger together. That way, situations like this will be less common."
You can't promise them that you'll never be in danger ever again. Life was unpredictable and you can't control that.
The twins grinned at each other and nodded eagerly at your words. In unison, they beamed,
"Okay!"
Spirits were lifted and you smiled. Having company does make things better.
"Speaking of getting stronger, I think you might've gained a new ability," Alastor said.
You pointed to yourself. "Me?"
"The irregular apparition was a bi––" Alastor remembered that there were kids here. "––a pain to fight. I had to work damn hard to be able to possess you. Don't ask me how it went down, it was a blurry mess. When I overpowered the irregular apparition, I felt something odd. Something like an epiphany."
"An epiphany?"
"Try summoning the irregular apparition." It was clear as day you were hesitant. "It'll be fine."
You did what he suggested and flipped to the page with the irregular apparition. It was no longer torn, but still in horrible condition compared to the rest of the pristine pages in the book. You took a deep breath and tore the page and was surprised at what you saw.
The irregular apparition was now a blob of murky grey, you felt like you could crush it with your hands despite being sick and injured. Communication with it was basically impossible as it only made some weird gurgling sounds.
"Damn, Alastor. You really overpowered it."
Alastor shrugged with indifference, but he looked a little proud.
The irregular apparition's words from before rang in your mind. At one point, you wondered if Alastor and the others only followed you for survival. However, after seeing how worried they were for you, you doubted it. You weren't going to doubt their feelings.
You summoned the pen. "I have no idea what to do."
"Follow your instincts. I'm guessing your ability has strong ties to your emotional connection with apparitions. How do you feel about the irregular apparition right now?"
"I..."
You tried to understand the irregular apparition, but that backfired on you. Was that saying that there are some people who could never be understood? Then, why did the book let you capture it?
"That mentality may work here and there with some apparitions, but that's because they're desperate. Did you think I entered your book because I was touched by you? That you understood me? I only did it because it'll protect me from those damned exorcists."
"..."
Maybe, the book didn't work like with Alastor and the others because the irregular apparition rejected your sympathy?
"If that's the case..." You mumbled. "Then, I can't force you to open up to me. I won't be involving myself with you anymore."
You allowed your emotions to guide you, pouring it into the pen. You flipped to a new page and began writing. When you finished, the irregular apparition dissolved into a blue light before completely disappearing.
"So this is the epiphany, huh?" You laughed. "Something within me must've clicked and I realised that I can't get through to everyone. Talking won't always work. It's so obvious, but a naive part of me thought..."
Thought that because I love Anomalous so much that it would work out.
"Guess I do have exorcism abilities now!" you chirped, closing the book. "Albeit, a little more complicated than the norm."
The kids didn't fully comprehend the reasoning behind your newly gained ability, but they looked happy for you nonetheless. Well, the twins did. Copper was trying to hide it with an adorable pout.
"Oh! You got stronger!" Alec exclaimed. "I'll catch up to you, just you wait!"
Sam nodded. "Mhm! We'll get so strong we won't even need Copper anymore."
"Hey!"
You laughed as the three of them bickered. It was lively again.
A small yawn escaped you and your eyelids grew heavy. Okay, now you definitely needed sleep.
"Okay guys, I need to get some shut eye."
"Oh! Can we sleep with you?" Sam asked.
You blinked in surprise. "Do apparitions need sleep?"
"Not really!"
"But we can still do it," Alec added.
"I mean, I don't see why I should say no."
Sam and Alec were ecstatic to join you. They snuggled on opposite sides of you. Copper was next to Alec and Mochi was still laid towards the end of the bed. The bed was queen sized, but with everyone here it was a tad cramped. Mochi made himself smaller to fit properly. You made a mental note to request for a king sized bed when you move into your new room.
"There's no way I'm getting in there," Alastor said. "I'll be good here."
"Need a pillow?"
"Very funny." He sighed. "Goodnight everyone."
"Goodnight!" the twins beamed.
Copper mumbled, "Night."
Mochi simply barked.
You smiled. "Goodnight, Alastor."
And so, you slept with your apparition friends by your side. Even Alastor eventually laid his head on the bed.
It was peaceful.
===
It's been a week since the SF trial. Surprisingly, you recovered within the span of four days. You had a feeling the faster recovery was thanks to Lyle taking care of you along with the apparitions yelling at you whenever you wanted to do something strenuous.
So, what was currently occupying your mind?
Beanbags.
You had just come back from shopping. Why? Well, first some context. There was a specific space in the AEI building only accessible to SF members; you just called it the SF's living room. Sara suggested to decorate the space and add your own personal touch. This has been going on for a few days now.
Miraculously, everyone was free tonight. Finn organised a dinner to celebrate the new team. At the idea of food and friends, you were beyond excited.
It does feel horrible since the ones who didn't make to the SF are...
You shook your head. You weren't about to bring the mood down and there was nothing you could do at the moment to help those who didn't pass the SF trial. You should celebrate your efforts and everyone else's.
Caleb insisted that the room have more spaces to laze around, but he was preoccupied with shopping for ingredients. You decided to humour him. Hence why you were currently carrying a copious amount of beanbags (that you bought with Sara's coupons, of course). You were struggling to haul the bean bags. Not because they were heavy, but because there was so much of it.
"I should've asked Amias to teleport me," you mumbled.
Ah, Amias. You hadn't had the chance to talk to him about literally everything. You were too busy being sick for four days. When you recovered, you both were too busy doing your job. When free time hit, you'd be too exhausted to do anything else other than collapse.
You expected the first few weeks to be rough; media, public opinions, more jobs than usual for exposure and reassurance to the public and of the sort. This especially applied for you, Cecil, Amias, Lyle and Jade since you guys were new.
You arrived in front of the door to the SF's living room. The name was literally written on paper poorly taped to the door in messy handwriting. That was Caleb's doing. Cecil added the sparkles around the words. The door was slightly ajar so you used your foot to kick it open. Conversations filled the space, which immediately made you more energetic.
Jade was nailing a large bulletin board into the wall and Finn was moving a couch. You tried to not stare at their muscles too much. Elias deadass had his own corner for coffee in the kitchen. He offered to make you some, but they were all incredibly bitter so you refused. Only Finn took up the offer. You had a feeling Caleb would secretly stock milk and sugar in the future.
"You're back! Phew, I thought the coupons expired." Sara excitedly waved at you, she was in the middle of putting cute potted plants in the cupboards. "Put them in the corner over there!"
You smiled. "Guess what? I managed to buy all of the beanbags for half the price."
"(Y/n), you are an absolute Queen."
There was a space that was separate from the main living room and you plopped the beanbags there. It was supposed to be turned into a game room soon enough. You had nothing against that.
Suddenly, someone pushed you into the beanbags. You grunted and found the culprit laying down right next to you.
"Of course it was you, Caleb."
Caleb grinned and purposefully stretched his arms in your face.
"Ah~ I did so much work today." He sighed and sat up, cupping his cheeks in his palms. "Miss Support, how about a hug to recharge?"
"I charge money."
"Do you take card?"
"Yes––Oh god, I feel like Cecil."
Caleb laughed before pulling you into a quick hug. This has been a common occurrence ever since you recovered. Not that you were complaining, it was nice to know he was growing more comfortable around you.
"Okay, done!" He patted your shoulder. "Wanna join me in prepping the food?"
"Let's hope I don't accidentally snag a bite."
"I won't tell anyone if you do."
"Deal."
"Great! Now––"
A beanbag suddenly went flying straight into Caleb's face. The culprit? None other than Elias. You did not hide your laughter.
Caleb shot a playful glare at the brunet. "Hey now, is this an invitation for a fight?"
Elias rolled his eyes. "Are you coming to the kitchen or not?"
You, Elias, and Caleb began preparing the food and bringing it out to the table. Amias eventually came back from shopping (something about candles and boardgames?) and Cecil was prepping the drinks, some alcoholic and some not. Everyone else helped set up the table and such.
"Want to try some?" Cecil brought a glass to your lips.
You took a sip. Of course it tasted heavenly. "Refreshing."
"Mhm, for my little hard worker." He winked.
"Dude, don't flirt. I'm gonna drop the plates."
After doing your fair share of work, you stepped aside for a moment and took out your phones. Scrolling through your contacts, you stopped at Lyle's name. Yes, you ended up getting his number. You would text time to come join the dinner, but you figured it would take some time for him to warm up to everyone. Excluding him made you feel bad, but knowing Lyle he wouldn't care about exclusion. He'd rather that than ruin the mood by showing up.
You heard Sara suddenly exclaim. "Let's invite Lyle!"
What.
Wait, no. You should've anticipated this. Lyle was also invited in the original storyline. He just rejected the offer.
You rejoined the others. "We're inviting Lyle?"
Sara was in the middle of making the dinner table aesthetic. "I don't see why not. His choice, though."
"Mhm. If he doesn't come, we'll force him."
"Do you know how choices work, Caleb?" Sara shook her head playfully. "Oh, (Y/n). Are you fine with it? I don't want to pry, but everyone knows that he tried to kill you."
Oft, what a way with words. But, how did she know––oh, wait. The irregular apparition said it at one point.
"You two seem to be getting along lately, so I assumed you talked it out," Sara continued. "Please tell me if I'm wrong! If things are still tense, we'll confront him and try to resolve things."
"We're all going to be working together as a team. Conflict between members is the last thing we need," Elias said.
You didn't feel the need to spill everything to them.
"Everything's fine, we're on good terms now."
Everyone nodded. You were thankful that they didn't ask for more details.
Amias asked you, "Are you sure?"
"Positive."
He was thoughtful for a moment, but he eventually smiled. "Okay."
Sara took out her phone. "Sweet! I'll send the text."
"Nah, I'll just drag him," Caleb said. "He's probably in the training area, huh?"
"Actually, he'd be in the library," you corrected.
Everyone looked at you.
"Hey, we got a little close during the time I was sick."
Instead of Caleb, Elias decided to fetch Lyle (which was for the best). When Lyle actually showed up, you were baffled. That didn't happen in the original story. You waved to him and he returned it with a nod.
Can I assume he's here now because of me...? That was a very flattering thought.
"I'll clean all the dishes when we're done," Lyle said. "Is there anything else I can help with?"
You were baffled again. He was comfortable with everyone so early on. Well, comfortable as in he communicated with everyone without any tension in the air. Damn, his character development was being speed ran.
Minutes later, you took a good look at the dinner table. Saying that all of this felt like a banquet was an understatement. There was such a large variety of food to where no matter what kind of diet you were on there would be a feast for you. The smell of food wafted through the room and almost roped you into inhaling everything. You held back the urge and waited for everyone to sit down.
Finally, everyone settled down on the dining table. Caleb happily plopped himself next to you on your right. Lyle sat down on your left. Your surprise must've been painfully obvious because Lyle quickly mumbled,
"You're the one I'm closest with."
"What I'm hearing is: you like me the most."
He rolled his eyes.
Amias looked incredibly betrayed when he found out Lyle sat down next to you before he did. You swore in the first few minutes into dinner he was sulking. It was kind of cute. You whispered a 'sorry!' for not saving him a seat. Amias frantically shook his head and reassured you that it was fine.
You remembered playing this scene in the game. You had to go buy food and come back to play the game because everything looked so freaking tasty. Lo and behold, you were now in it eating said food. What a W.
"Let's take a photo," Cecil said. "One for the bulletin board."
Cecil was the one who suggested building in a bulletin board to put up photos of the team. The board was huge so you guys could go wild with the photos and decorations. Plus, even if there wasn't enough space you could just make use of the other walls.
It'll be fun to see the room be filled with pictures of us as the year progresses.
There was one singular photo pinned in the centre as of right now. It was the one you and Caleb took in the photobooth when you two first hung out together right before your encounter with Amias. You smiled at the nostalgia; in the photo Caleb was smiling cheerfully, a hand outstretched into a peace sign and an arm over your shoulder while you were in the middle of laughing.
After taking the photo (Cecil spammed the camera and you were positive that you blinked in at least fifty percent of them), Cecil said,
"That reminds me! (Y/n) and I did a photoshoot for a magazine the other day."
You almost choked on your food. "Don't remind me. I had no idea what I was doing and Cecil had to help me every three seconds."
"How did that happen?" Amias asked.
"Oh. I happen to be visiting Cecil's bar," you answered. "People approached us and Cecil said yes before I could run away."
"It was good money, though." Cecil hummed happily. "Business has been wonderful lately. I'm so popular I don't know what to do with myself."
Caleb grinned. "So, free drinks?"
"No."
"Aw."
"Didn't Amias have three interviews back to back in different locations?" Sara asked.
"I guess it was good teleportation practice." Amias sighed wearily before turning over to Lyle. "Lyle, did you have any interviews?"
"I turned down all of it. Well, that was the plan anyway. Elias forced me to go to some."
"You need to keep up public appearances," Elias said.
"Whatever."
Every now and then you'd find it hilarious how Lyle is the youngest in the group. It looked like Elias was lecturing a younger brother.
Lyle was eyeing a shrimp dish over on your side. You pointed at it, silently asking if he wanted it. He nodded and you slid the plate over to him. When he took a bite, you swore there was a hint of a content smile.
"You like seafood?"
Lyle nodded. "I'll eat anything, though."
"Oh, I like seafood as well," Jade said. "Salmon is my favourite."
"Jade! How has your week been?" Sara asked.
"Busy. I don't mind attending interviews, but I like giving talks at school the most." She smiled and you almost fainted at how gorgeous she looked. "Recently, I've been doing some reflection and––how should I put this––I've been feeling more hopeful. I was a little worried if the team I'll be working with will have good people, but it seems like I was concerned for nothing."
No one expected Jade to suddenly open up like that (except you because you played the game), but everyone seemed pleased. Sara smiled at Jade encouragingly and Caleb playfully teased her for the 'mushy' words.
"Same here~" Cecil chimed in. "For me, I see it as a good environment for improvement. No one here is the type to hold others back and I'm certain I'll achieve my goals. Well, alongside doing my job, of course."
You smiled and joked, "This is Cecil's priority list: 1. Get good. 2. Do my job as an SF member, probably."
That got a few chuckles.
"Oh! I have something to say."
Everyone looked over to Caleb. They all expected him to joke around, which is why everyone was surprised when he said,
"I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone when I say that we all have our own fair share of troubles, whether external or internal. But..." Caleb paused and a genuine smile graced his lips. "I feel safe with everyone here. I like this team and everyone."
Elias's gaze was on Caleb for a few seconds longer than everyone else. If you had to make an assumption, you'd say he was proud of Caleb for opening up like that. Everyone exchanged glances and nodded in agreement.
Caleb didn't say that in the original storyline, so...
You glanced over to Caleb. He smiled cheerfully and made a heart with his hand. You chuckled at that and did the same back.
I'm glad my involvement was good for something.
Then, dinner came to an end and everyone was idly chatting. There were still a lot of leftover dishes (Caleb loved going all out with the cooking). You'll eat it for breakfast tomorrow and bring some to your former Support team.
"Amias, you look like you have something to say," Elias said. "You've been spacing out a little as well."
"Oh!" Amias sheepishly chuckled. "Ah... It's okay. It might ruin the mood."
"It's fine, tonight has been a great success anyway," Finn reassured. "So, what's up?"
Ohh, you knew where this was going.
"Uhm, So... It's always mentioned that there used to be seven members in the speciality force, however..." Amias paused for a moment. "Who is the last member?"
The table went silent.
Elias, Caleb, Sara, Finn, James, and Rose; those were the members everyone was familiar with. However, a seventh is never mentioned. No one knows their name, face, gender––no one remembers them.
"S-sorry, you don't have to answer."
Elias shook his head. "No, it's a good thing you asked. We needed to clear things up sooner or later. To answer your question, we don't know who they are."
"You don't?"
"However, there is this sinking feeling that insists that there was someone, someone who stood besides us and worked with us. I feel like the more the years progress, this feeling becomes fainter." Elias lowered his gaze, his voice dropping to almost a whisper. "So, we insist there is another member so we never truly forget. The other AEI members eventually accepted it."
Finn, Sara, and Caleb nodded at Elias's words. Finn added onto them,
"It's weird. Their face, personality, our history with them––everything was erased. Why can't we remember them? What happened?" Finn sighed. "I'm guessing that we're the only ones who feel this way because we were close with them."
"Thinking about it makes me feel nauseous sometimes. Even the chairman experienced something similar," Sara said. "Oh! Amias, don't feel bad about bringing it up. We're all working as a team now and transparency is important. We should at least tell you guys this."
No one spoke, digesting the information. Since the chairman was mentioned, you were tempted to bring up another topic.
"Have you guys ever wondered what happens behind the scenes?"
Holy heck, Cecil did it for you. As bold as ever. Wait, why did Cecil do it? You were sure he didn't in the original storyline.
You recalled the conversation that took place before the SF trial.
"What if the chairman had intentions of targeting specific people? That's why he chose members from units you'd normally wouldn't expect. Amias, someone with an unknown background was chosen. Me, someone who displays odd abilities to withstand possession and claims to know little about them. We're both suspicious.
What if he intends to keep us in check? And if we are deemed as a threat in some way, he'd get rid of us and use the SF trial to cover his actions? Even if our disappearance might look suspicious on his part, I don't doubt that he can come up with an excuse and everyone will believe him."
"I see..." Cecil mumbled, a flicker of intrigue in his eyes. "You seem to trust me enough to say these things, but how can I say the same for you? What if you're setting me up?"
You took out the money from your purse. "Okay, then let's call it a business transaction. I'm employing you."
"So that's why you brought money." Cecil smiled, suddenly looking a lot more compliant now. "That's fine by me."
Ah, so it was your influence again. Well, at least you assumed it was your conversation with him that catalysed the change. This could work in your favour. The more everyone thinks beyond the AEI's current system, the easier it would be for the future when you'd have to eventually challenge the chairman.
"You don't have to answer," Cecil clarified. "I was just wondering."
"Oh, we weren't silent because we were judging you," Caleb answered. "It's just... a weird thought. Whenever I try to think about stuff that incriminates the AEI, my mind becomes hazy. Then, I feel adamant to not think about it any further. Wild stuff."
"We're not dense. As efficient as the AEI is, I am aware that there are things happening behind the scenes. Especially in the technology design division," Elias said.
"Actually, I feel the same way as well," Jade said. "I tried thinking deeper about it just now and I felt dizzy."
This logic applied to the rest of the city as well. It was a first good step getting them to start questioning things. Nice going, Cecil.
Those unaffected by this strange wave of dizziness were you, Amias, and Cecil. This was because Amias was someone who didn't grow up in the city like everyone else. Cecil? It was because of his nature; he was innately someone who always questioned things, someone who can be very nosey at times. That was both a prominent character strength and flaw of his. You? Well, obviously it was because you didn't grow up here and you literally played through the entire game.
"Let's leave it off here for now. We can investigate or something at another time. We should all get some rest." Lyle stood up. "I'll wash the dishes."
Everyone played their part bringing the dishes to the kitchen and cleaning up the table. When everything was done, you happily entered your new room. Since you were no longer a support member, you were moved to a different part of the building. You had a king-sized bed now (very important).
You sat in front of your desk with a satisfied sigh.
Hey, (Y/n).
Holy sh––Alastor. You gave me a heart attack. Do you just like showing up out of nowhere?
You could tell Alastor rolled his eyes. It wasn't long before the apparition appeared in front of you. He made himself comfortable on the bed.
"Oh, c'mon. You should be used to this by now."
"Right. Anyways, what did you come out for?"
"You know the mysterious seventh member they were talking about? Do you happen to know them? Sorry, my curiosity is killing me."
"Obviously I do."
"Yeah, figures you wouldn't know––" He paused. A childlike eagerness glimmered in his red eyes and he leaned forward. "Wait, really?"
You felt smug in that moment. "Mhm."
"Wow, okay. You're kind of overpowered at this point."
"Physically, no. Knowledge wise? Yup."
The seventh member is erased from everyone else's mind, but not yours. His face was vividly in your head. After all, how can you forget the face of your favourite character?
"So? Who are they?"
"It'll be tedious to explain." You grinned. "Wanna pay him a visit instead?"
Okay, now you've definitely grabbed Alastor's attention. "Seriously?!"
You laughed at his enthusiasm. Alastor huffed in response and crossed his arms. "When are we going?"
You mused over it for a minute. Alastor may be excited, but you were ecstatic. Finally, there was an appropriate time to see your favourite character face to face.
"Tomorrow is my day off, so why not then?"
