"y'all are so loud" Ana groans, softly, rolling over on the gurney, having woken up to the sound of gunshots.
The medic is shocked that she's awake, having given her an epinephrine shot because she was having a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine.
"you're awake" Lucy breathes, rushing over.
"mmm" Ana hums, looking up at her best friend.
"Tim!" Lucy calls.
Tim looks up and jogs over and gets into the ambulance.
"well there you are, scared the hell out of us, cupcake" Tim says with a smile but Ana can tell that he's worried.
"you're still coming over for dinner on Saturday right?" Ana asks, softly, before glancing up at Lucy. "you should come too"
[Timeskip | Two Weeks Later]
Ana walks into the roll call room, a little later than she normally does. She startles a little when people give her a round of applause and she thanks them for sitting down.
"didn't know that they gave a round of applause just for surviving" Ana murmurs, softly, to Lucy.
"if it were up to me, you'd get a round of applause every day" Lucy smiles.
"same here" Ana giggles. "you finish those carnita leftovers yet?"
"no! your abuela made enough to feed a whole damn village" Lucy shakes her head.
Ana giggles. "you see now why Tim refused to take them?"
"yes, I get it now" Lucy grins.
Ana looks up at the board and sees four numbers: 81, 91, 94, 97. Due to the circumstances of her not getting her checklist done and the fact that she almost died, Ana was cleared to take the six month exam, so she took it a week ago.
"All right. Shake off the rust and grab a seat. Anyone want to guess what these numbers represent? Nolan." Grey starts roll call.
"Those are the scores to our six-month exams." Nolan answers.
"That is correct, Officer Nolan." Grey nods.
"Oh! We all passed." Lucy exclaims.
"Technically, yes, but that 81 is ugly, given that an 80 is basically an F." Grey answers.
"Who got the low mark?" Angela asks.
"Clearly not West." Tim remarks, teasing Angela.
"I could tell you, but self-reflection is necessary for your success as a patrol officer. So I want your guesses, as to which score is yours by end of shift. Understood?" Grey answers.
"Why not give them now?" Jackson asks.
"To mess with our heads." Nolan answers.
"Are you saying you're so easily sabotaged, Officer Nolan?" Grey raises an eyebrow.
"No, sir, I was speaking for Officer Cabrera." Nolan grins.
"I can attest to it already messing with my head" Ana chimes in.
"Welcome back, Officer Cabrera" Grey says.
"thank you, sir, have you eaten all of the carnitas we sent you?" Ana asks, softly, smiling.
"oh my god, it takes up my entire damn fridge but they are so good" Grey shakes his head.
"Sir, will there be consequences for the officer with the low score?" Lucy asks, bringing them back on track.
"Officer Lopez, you want to take that?" Grey asks.
"At a minimum, a low score means merciless taunting for months." Angela responds.
"Great." Lucy grumbles.
"But you four did pass, so there's good news - you can now wear short sleeves. Congratulations. Nolan." Grey says, calling on Nolan when he raises his hand.
"Sir, who will I be riding with today?" Nolan asks.
"I was thinking me. But, I think I want to test out Cabrera, I haven't ridden with her yet. So you'll go with Chen and Bradford. Since I know about you and Bradford's bromance" Grey grins.
"Cabrera, Bradford, you two cool with that?" Grey asks.
"yes, sir" Ana says, softly.
"yup" Tim smirks, eying Nolan and already brainstomring the ways he's gonna torture him today.
The rookies are walking down to the quartermaster to get the gear for the day.
"I know I did better than an 81, didn't I?" Lucy questions.
"you did do better than an 81, if anyone got it, it was probably me" Ana says, softly.
"you didn't get an 81" Lucy frowns.
"the written test was easy, but the oral?" Ana replies, softly, shaking her head.
"Yeah, the oral exam is the X-Factor." Jackson mentions.
"He's right. Chief Williams could ding us on the tiniest of mistakes, which I'm sure he did with me, and Grey knows that, so Tim's gonna spend the day torturing me." Nolan sighs.
"Or he knows you pulled the high score and Tim plans to torture you anyway." Lucy says, trying to be optimistic.
"You're lucky you don't have to worry." Nolan says, turning to Jackson.
"Who says I'm not worried?" Jackson asks.
[Timeskip]
"so why aren't you wearing short sleeves?" Lucy asks.
"Tim told me a while ago that his rookies wear long sleeves and ties 'til the end of probation" Ana replies, softly. "plus, I get cold.
"he didn't say that" Lucy responds as they enter the garage. "and even if he did, you're riding with Grey for the day."
"Tim is still my training officer" Ana answers, softly. "plus, I don't mind the long sleves and the tie"
"What are you doing?" Tim asks when he sees them step into the garage.
"What?" Lucy asks.
"My rookies wear long sleeves and ties until the last day of probation" Tim responds.
"Yeah, but Sergeant Grey said -" Lucy starts.
"Grey is not your training officer. I have complete discretion of the training of my boot, and that includes uniform. Okay? So go change back into your long sleeves. And don't forget the tie. Now, Boot." Tim says and Lucy sighs before walking back.
"you too, boot" Tim says, when Nolan enters the garage.
"but-..." Nolan tries.
"I am your temporary training officer, long sleeves and tie" Tim orders.
"Where you two going?" Jackson asks, as both Lucy and Nolan walk past him, back to the locker rooms.
"To change back." Lucy huffs.
[Timeskip]
"Alright, Cabrera" Grey sighs as they get into the car.
"what are your preliminary guesses for the scores?" Grey asks.
"um... Lucy at the 99, Jackson at 94, Nolan at 91, me at 81" Ana replies, softly, as she drives out of the garage.
"there a reason you putting yourself last?" Grey questions.
"The last three weeks have been really hard, I don't know, it's as much as a knowledge as an emotional test" Ana responds, softly. "I've also never really been a good test taker."
"interesting" Grey muses.
"7-Adam-15, 507 at Sunset Plaza, Code 2." Dispatch says over the radio.
"7-Adam-15, copy." Grey responds over the radio.
[Timeskip]
They arrive at a restaurant where a man in a suit is holding back another man while a third man is trying to eat his food.
"hi, gentlemen, what's going on here?" Ana asks, softly.
"The problem is this guy trying to sell me a colon-cleaning start-up while I'm eating lamb chops." Mark Cuban explains.
"Look, Colon Glow is patent-pending. "Make it sublime where the sun don't shine. " You can get in on the ground floor for only $100K." The solicitor pleads.
The bodyguard drags the solicitor away with Grey following after him.
"I'm sorry about all of that" Ana apologizes, softly.
"it's fine, I'm used to it" Cuban replies..
"Mr. Cuban, sorry." Grey says, coming back over.
"Yep." Cuban nods.
"Cabrera, let's go" Grey instructs.
"It was lovely to meet you, sir" Ana says, softly, before following Grey out of the restaurant.
[Timeskip]
They go to a uniform store to buy uniforms that Grey ordered last week.
"You're supposed to carry an extra uniform shirt in your war bag." Grey tells Ana.
"Yes, sir, I let Lucy borrow it since one of hers was ruined in the wash" Ana explains, softly, as the approach the counter.
There is a young man (Justin) behind the counter who looks nervous and like he doesn't know what he's doing.
"Hey. I ordered a new set of dress blues last week. See if they're in?" Grey says, coming to the counter.
"Uh, yeah. I can go look in back." Justin replies.
"Frank usually checks the computer. Is he around?" Grey asks, gesturing towards a computer behind the desk.
"No." Justin answers.
"Oh." Grey says, subtly releasing the strap on his holster.
"So, how long you been working here?" Ana asks, softly.
"Couple weeks." Justin answers.
"oh, so new job, how are you liking it?" Ana questions, softly.
"Uh. It's alright" Justin shrugs.
"so what's your name?" Ana asks, softly.
"Justin" Justin replies.
"oh, and what's your last name?" Ana questions, softly.
Justin doesn't respond, running through the back room.
"He's headed for the alley. I'll cut him off." Grey realizes, running out to the patrol car while Ana jumps over the counter to chase Justin down.
Ana runs out into the alley, where three thieves are trying to escape. One of the thieves tries to hit her with his motorcycle but Ana jumps out of the way, managing to grab a duffel bag that the thief had attached to his motorcycle.
"7-Adam-15, 211 at Top Cop Uniforms. Three suspects escaping on motorcycles heading north, south, and east. Send backup and airship. What'd they steal?" Grey asks, getting out of the cruiser and coming over.
Ana opens the duffle bag, looking down at the uniforms inside. "Police uniforms." Ana replies, softly, her eyes wide.
[Timeskip]
"How many uniforms did they take?" Russo responds.
"Around 20, ma'am" Ana replies, softly.
"That's a lot of potential fake cops, which is why you called Homeland Security." Russo nods.
"I called you as a courtesy. In most cases, stolen uniforms are used for drug rips." Grey corrects.
"Well, that's a lot of risk just to rob a few drug dealers, which is why we're going to be treating this as a potential high-threat-level event." Russo argues.
"Like in '09 with the bus?" Grey asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh, God, here we go." Russo groans.
"Jess' first year with the FBI-LAPD Taskforce, she convinced us that a missing school bus was a prelude - to a terror attack." Grey explains, turning to Ana.
"oh, what did it end up being?" Ana asks, softly.
"A third-grader didn't want to take a test, so he stole the bus, so he wouldn't have to go to school. I mean -" Russo rolls her eyes.
"She had half the LAPD hunting a 9-year-old." Grey tells Ana.
"Hey, overtime paid for my Disney World vacation. I'm not complaining." Grey grins at Russo
"Okay, you know what? You picked the one time - that I was wrong." Russo argues.
"The one time? The one time?" Grey teases.
"Was there body-cam footage of the man inside the store?" Russo asks, turning to Ana.
"no, we didn't have the cameras on, sorry, ma'am" Ana replies, softly.
"We'll put her with an artist. We will send you a sketch. How about that?" Grey reasons.
"Great. Look, I hope you're right about this being small-time, but I don't think it is." Russo says before walking away.
"do you think she's mad about the cameras?" Ana asks, softly.
"it was supposed to be picking up uniforms, there was no reason to have the cameras on" Grey assures her. "come on, let's get you with a sketch artist."
[Timeskip]
Ana is sitting down, describing Justin to a sketch artist (Benson).
"here it is" Benson says, turning around the drawing.
Ana frowns.
"that's just a drawing of you, sir" Ana responds, softly.
"what?" Benson asks, turning it around.
"oh, yeah, it is" Benson nods, smiling.
"may I?" Ana asks, softly, taking the sketch pad and quickly sketching Justin.
She's always had a knack for drawing and when she finishes, it looks like a good sketch of Justin.
"they found the bikes" Grey says, entering the room.
"I have the sketch for Russo" Ana says, softly, standing up and handing him the sketch.
"bye Benson, it was lovely to meet you" Ana turns to Benson before leaving with Grey, polite as ever.
[Timeskip]
When they arrive at the scene, the motorcycles are all burnt up and firefighters are trying to fight the blaze.
"those are the motorcycles, but we won't get any forensics off of them" Ana frowns, softly.
"There's a body." Grey notes.
Ana sniffs. "yeah I can smell it"
They walk closer to the scene and see the body entangled in the motorcycle wreck.
"yeah, that's the gold teeth, it's Justin" Ana says, softly.
"7-Adam-15, change our call to a homicide. Send detectives and a forensics team. And alert Jessica Russo at DHS." Grey says over the radio.
"if they met up here, why did they kill Justin?" Ana asks, softly.
"Because we saw him." Grey replies.
[Timeskip]
"ugh" Ana grimaces, watching Nolan throw up after seeing the body.
"thank god you rode with Grey today" Lucy says, coming over. "he's spent the whole time proving that I don't know anything"
"I don't know, this is pretty unsettling" Ana murmurs, softly. "I'd rather have Tim Tests than do this, plus this whole day feels like one big Grey Test"
"why?" Lucy asks.
"I told him I thought I got the lowest score and he just nodded, he knows that I did and now he's trying to decide whether to fire me or not" Ana replies, softly.
"or, or, you're just overthinking things... again" Lucy points out.
Ana nods. "you're probably right"
"at least I know everything about you" Lucy teases, making Ana giggle.
[Timeskip]
"Good morning." Jackson says, walking in.
"What's good about it?" Lucy and Nolan responds, making Ana giggle
"Uh-oh. Looks like somebody's stressed about their test scores." Jackson teases.
"it'll be fine, the worst any of you got was the 91, I know I got the 81" Ana assures them, softly.
"you know, this self deprecating thing is starting to annoy me" Lucy replies.
"So you're saying that me being myself is annoying you?" Ana teases, giggling.
Lucy doesn't have time to respond before Grey starts roll call.
"All right, take your seats. As expected, the stolen uniforms caused a bit of paranoia out there. Overnight, there were two fights and a near shooting 'cause two officers didn't recognize each other. All right, that being said, it is vital that we remain vigilant. Understood? Now, to your exam scores. You all submitted your guesses last night, and none of you guessed right." Grey announces.
"wait, what?" Ana asks, softly.
"Save your concern, Officer Cabrera. Officer Nolan got the highest score, followed by Cabrera and then Chen with the 91. And the 81? Well that "honor" goes to Officer West." Grey announces, making Ana's jaw drop.
"That's not possible." Angela protests.
"I've seen a lot of strange things in my 20 years, but never would I have imagined that the golden boy would tank his test." Grey says.)
"But there's a th- like, I-I -" Jackson stutters out, looking devastated.
"Uh-oh. Looks like Grey broke your rookie." Tim teases.
"Shut up." Angela replies.
[Timeskip]
Ana and Lucy are walking through the parking garage because Ana left her water bottle in there this morning. An unidentified cop (Bernhardt appears right behind them.
"Hold that, please." Bernhardt requests.
"yeah, of course" Ana says, softly, keeping the door open.
"Thanks." Bernhardt says, walking down the stairs.
"of course" Ana answers, softly.
The man walks to a police cruiser and looks through the window.
"Hey, are you looking for something?" Lucy calls.
"Oh, yeah, um, my wallet." Bernhardt lies.
"Ah." Lucy replies, exchanging a look with Ana.
"Did you find it?" Ana asks, softly, when he pulls something out of the cruiser.
"Yeah. Thanks. Yeah." Bernhardt responds.
He's holding police equipment, along with a radio, trying to appear casual but Lucy and Ana see right through it.
"What are you doing with that radio?" Lucy asks, but he sprints away.
Ana and Lucy run after him, Ana is a little bit of a faster runner and is a step ahead of Lucy.
"Hey! Stop! 7-Adam-19, chasing a fake cop in the garage. I need backup. Hey! Stop!" Lucy says into the radio.
The man leaps over the side of the parking garage and into a dumpster below. Ana doesn't even hesitate to jump after him. She lands on the man in the dumpster and the man hits her in the head with the radio. She collapses, unconscious. Meanwhile, Lucy jumps into the dumpster as well, while the man scrambles out. Lucy tries to keep up with him but he drives away before she can get him.
Ana groans as she wakes up, rubbing her head.
"hey, are you okay?" Lucy asks, running over.
"I think so" Ana replies, softly, gratefully accepting Lucy's help getting out of the dumpster. "I don't think I have a concussion."
[Timeskip]
The two girls and Grey are looking over the side of the garage where Ana, Lucy and the man jumped.
"And you two jumped from here?" Grey asks, Ana has an icepack held to her head.
"Yes, sir." Lucy responds.
"I know you're not okay, but are you?" Grey asks, talking to Lucy for the last bit.
"Yeah." Lucy nods.
"You went right over after him?" Grey asks.
" 'Course she did. I trained her." Tim responds, bringing a new ice pack for Ana.
"Mm-hmm. You saying this guy stole a radio?" Grey questions Lucy.
"Yes, sir, out of Car 26. Actually, he he wasn't wearing gloves. Maybe we can pull a print?" Lucy replies.
[Timeskip]
"There it is. Fake escort's already got them." Lucy says.
"We can't warn the truck driver because they're jamming the radio" Ana points out, softly, following Tim out of the car.
"Shouldn't we wait for backup?" Lucy asks.
"We are the backup." Tim responds, making Lucy get out of the shop too.
Ana parks the shop so that it's blocking the convoy that is coming this way.
"Okay, get ready. Remember, they don't know that we know." Tim instructs.
"What's the problem?" The fake cop says, getting out of his car.
"Radios are down. We were sent to escort the truck back to the courthouse." Tim responds.
"Must be a mistake. We're the escort. So get out of the way." The fake cop responds.
"No problem. We were headed to lunch when we got the call." Tim shrugs, and they turn around to walk back to their shop.
Ana looks back and sees a man in the back of the car holding a large non regulation gun.
"Tim?" Ana says, softly.
"I see it" Tim responds.
"One last thing before we go - real cops wear their vests under their shirt." Tim says, turning back around to the fake cop.
They are almost immediately shot at. They use the open shop doors as cover as they shoot back. Ana grabs a smoke bomb and throws it towards the men. Lucy uses the opportunity to get behind the man with the large gun while Ana watches her back. Jackson and Angela arrive at the other end of the convoy.
"Drop your weapon right now! Down on the ground, facedown, hands apart! Don't you move." Lucy yells, putting her gun to the back of the man with the huge gun.
"Up." Lucy insists after she cuffs him.
"looks like you do know something after all" Ana smiles, softly, pulling up another fake cop that she arrested.
Lucy grins at Ana and they high five.
