"Runt" Harper calls.
Ana turns from where she's talking with Lucy before roll call.
"just a sec" Ana says, softly, before running over to Harper and Grey.
"yeah?" Ana asks, softly.
"Grey's riding with me for my annual eval, you're back with Bradford and Chen" Harper informs her.
"okay, but it's like July, the annual eval isn't due until December" Ana frowns.
"Runt" Harper warns.
"sorry, I'll go now, good luck with your eval" Ana says, softly, before skipping off back to Lucy.
[Timeskip]
"It is a big deal. "Light of the City" award? I thought you'd be happier. I planned my emotional day around it." Lucy says as they get stuff from the quartermaster.
"I don't do this for the medals and plaques, Boot." Tim replies.
"Yes, only lesser cops enjoy recognition." Lucy mocks him.
"Exactly." Tim nods, making Ana giggle.
"Well, if it doesn't matter, turn it down." Lucy replies.
"It doesn't matter to me, but it does matter to the higher-ups. Look, a good score on the sergeant's exam, this award could help me rise through the list of candidates." Tim replies.
"Oh, yeah" Ana nods. "that makes sense"
"Fair enough." Lucy nods.
"Jackson's dedicated an entire shelf to his award?" Tim asks.
"He's building a cabinet from scratch." Ana giggles.
"He knows how to do that?" Tim questions.
"Nolan's helping him." Lucy replies.
[Timeskip]
"Did you invite Rachel?" Ana asks, curiously, on patrol
"To the "Light of the City" thing? No. I told you, it's not a big deal." Tim replies.
"You invited her and she's busy?" Lucy guesses.
"Out of town." Tim grumbles
"Oh. Well, I'll send her pictures." Lucy decides.
Lucy looks out the window "Oh, hey, 3:00. Skateboarder's about to grab that woman's bag." Lucy says. Ana and Tim both look the skateboarder try to grab the woman's purse but fail.
"Swing and a miss." Tim grins.
Ana looks forward while Lucy and Tim are still looking at the skateboarder. A car stops suddenly, without brake lights, and they're about to hit it.
"Tim!" Ana calls, but it's too late.
"Whoa, you're bleeding." Lucy says, glancing at Tim.
"here" Ana says, softly, handing him a cloth to put on the wound.
"I'll be fine. You two okay?" Tim asks.
"yeah" Lucy replies.
"yes, sir" Ana answers, softly.
"Get the flares out. Seal off the whole street." Tim orders.
"Ma'am, are you hurt?" Tim asks the other driver - Sarah Murphy.
"No, I'm fine" Sarah replies.
"Control, 7-Adam-19. Show me at a traffic collision at Melrose and Gardner. Be advised, it's a city vehicle." Tim says over the radio.
[Timeskip]
"Yeah, we're handling it, Sarge. It was Bradford/Chen/Cabrera." An officer (Walter) says.
"Man. That's a lot of cops for a fender bender." Lucy whistles.
"Officer-involved accidents are very serious." Tim replies.
Ana, meanwhile, is looking at the other car. It maybe have been a trick of the light but she's pretty sure the car didn't have it's brake lights on. However, she's very quickly shooed away.
"Someone's getting a day at the beach." Walter says, taking Tim's ID and walking off.
"Day at the beach?" Ana asks, confused, coming back over to them.
"Suspension without pay. One of the many possible discipline options. I could be demoted, kicked out of field training. No point in taking the sergeant's exam." Tim explains.
"And things just keep getting better." Tim sighs as Grey and Harper turn up.
"You three okay?" Grey asks, walking over.
"Yeah. Fine." Tim responds.
"Shop's not." Harper notices.
"What happened?" Grey asks.
"I lost focus. The car just suddenly stopped." Tim explains.
"And the other driver?" Grey questions.
"Uh, taken to the hospital. Might have whiplash. Possible concussion." Tim replies.
"It's probably best you sit out the ceremony today." Grey decides.
"Of course. Can't have the Deputy Chief handing a plaque to an officer facing demotion." Tim agrees.
"I'll need a collision memo on this by end of shift." Grey says before walking away.
"Given the liability implications, you should go to the hospital, in order to head off any questions about your fitness to drive. Have them do a full work-up and prove that you weren't impaired." Harper advises.
"Yeah, I'll do that. Thanks." Tim nods, watching as Harper walks away as well.
"I'm really sorry" Ana apologizes.
"I'm so sorry, Tim." Lucy apologizes.
"Follow our shop back to the garage. Transfer our gear to a new one, pick me up at the hospital." Tim tells the two girls
"okay" Ana nods, softly.
[Timeskip]
"Luce" Ana says, softly, pulling her aside once they get to the job.
"what's up?" Lucy asks.
"the other car, I don't think it had its breaks on." Ana says, softly.
"yeah? I mean, maybe, I wasn't looking" Lucy frowns.
"It could just be a trick of the light... but if it's not..." Ana trails off, softly.
"let's go" Lucy says, walking over to Walter, who is the one who looks after the shops.
"You got business here, little ladies?" Walter asks, turning to him.
"My T.O. and we were the ones involved in this accident." Lucy explains.
"Oh, right. The beach boy. He's screwed." Walter says.
"Have you had a chance to look at the other car?" Ana asks, softly.
"Not yet." Walter replies.
"I just-... I don't think I saw brake lights" Ana explains, softly.
"Uh-huh." Walter says, obviously not believing her.
"Can you take a look?" Ana asks, softly.
"Yeah, when I have time." Walter shrugs.
"You've got time now. This is important. Officer Bradford is a 12-year veteran. He's been wounded five times in the line of duty. He deserves your respect, not whatever macho crap this is." Lucy says, getting protective.
"Sir." Lucy adds in a more respectful voice.
"Okay. Let's take a look." Walter sighs, walking over to the car and opening the trunk.
"Oh. Taillights weren't on." Walter says, looking at some pulled wirings.
"how do you know?" Ana asks, softly.
"The brake lights didn't work, because someone pulled out the contacts." Walter replies.
"Could that have happened during the accident?" Ana questions, softly.
"No, these were pulled on purpose." Walter shakes his head.
"Why would they do that?" Lucy asks.
"Insurance scams. See it all the time. Get someone to rear-end you and collect the settlement. Maybe your T.O. isn't screwed after all." Walter explains.
"What's the powder?" Ana asks, softly, pointing at a red powder in the bottom of the runk.
"Ah. Looks like your victim's into all kinds of scams." Walter says.
"What do you mean?" Ana asks, softly.
"Powder's, uh, red phosphorous. You know, the stuff on the tip of matches?" Walter explains.
"Why would they have that?" Lucy questions.
"Well, if they're not cooking meth, arsonists use it to set fires. Harder to trace than gasoline, and you can make a fuse with it." Walter replies.
Ana and Lucy share a look.
[Timeskip]
"Hey" Lucy says, walking in.
"how are you doing?" Ana asks, softly.
"Alright, all things considered. You switch out the shops?" Tim questions.
"Uh, yeah, but there's something else. The car was rigged." Lucy adds.
"What?" Tim asks.
"The brake lights weren't connected. This accident wasn't your fault." Ana explains, softly.
"No wonder I reacted so slowly. The leads were purposefully disconnected?" Tim questions.
"Yeah. And there's more. Sarah had arson materials in the back of her car. Clearly, she's a bit of a renaissance scam artist." Lucy continues.
"Let's go talk to her." Tim says, standing up.
[Timeskip]
"You rigged the car." Tim claims, walking into Sarah's hospital room.
"What? No. I didn't." Sarah replies.
"Our dash cam shows that your brake lights weren't working and we found that the leads were pulled" Ana says, softly.
"You searched my car? I didn't give you permission." Sarah says, getting mad.
"We don't need permission once it's been involved in an accident." Lucy replies.
"I don't think you were trying to get rear-ended by a police car. Bad luck, honestly." Tim shrugs.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Sarah responds.
"Sarah, this is serious. Your vehicle's full of evidence, all admissible against you." Ana says, not liking how Sarah is brushing it off.
"It's not mine." Sarah insists.
"Then whose is it? Your boyfriend? The guy who was threatening to sue me earlier?" Tim questions.
"No." Sarah replies.
"What's his name?" Lucy asks.
"I'm not gonna tell you that." Sarah answers.
"Emergency contact, Mike Garvey. And a phone number." Ana reads aloud Sarah's chart.
"Just what we need for a background check." Lucy says.
Lucy cuffs Sarah to the bed before saying "So you don't go anywhere while we're running it"
[Timeskip]
"I think you two should interview him alone." Tim says. They're standing in an observation room where Mike Garvey is waiting impatiently in the interrogation room.
"Why?" Lucy asks.
"Because he knows I'm the one that hit her. He doesn't know you were in the car with me. His guard won't be up." Tim explains.
[Timeskip]
Ana and Lucy enter the interrogation room and sit across from Mike.
"I need to be at the hospital." Mike says, impatient.
"Yes, sir. We'll get you out of here as quickly as we can." Ana replies, softly.
"And I wasn't even in the car. I don't understand why you have to talk to me." Mike continues.
"It's standard procedure. You can imagine the paperwork when an officer gets involved in an accident." Lucy explains.
"That cop should be fired." Mike says, making Ana bristle
"That is up to the department." Lucy replies.
"Do you and Sarah live together?" Ana asks, softly, starting to take notes.
"Yeah. Why?" Mike asks.
"Do you ever use her car?" Lucy questions.
"What difference does it make?! She was rear-ended." Mike exclaims.
"Yes, sir. If you could just answer the question. Do you ever use her car?" Ana asks again, softly.
"No." Mike replies.
"Never?" Ana asks, softly, raising an eyebrow.
"Never." Mike insists.
"So, you didn't disconnect her taillights to commit insurance fraud?" Lucy asks.
"Nope." Mike shakes his head.
"But you have committed fraud before. Right? Arrested three times, convicted once." Ana brings up, softly.
"I'm out of here." Mike says, leaving the room and running into Tim, who left the Observation room.
"I know what's going on here. You're trying to intimidate me. But it's not gonna work. 'Cause I'm gonna get a lawyer, I'm gonna come back here, I'm gonna sue you and the entire department." Mike threatens Tim.
"Little advice - if you can only afford one retainer, I'd start with a criminal lawyer. You're gonna need that one first." Tim replies, making Mike storm off.
"Sorry we didn't get more out of him." Ana apologizes, softly.
"Don't be. The point was to wind him up. First thing he's gonna do is call Sarah and wind her up even more." Tim replies.
"And then we see who breaks first." Lucy realizes.
[Timeskip]
"Only one of you is getting a deal. And you want it to be you." Tim says, trying to get Sarah to break.
"I was about to leave him. I went over to borrow some suitcases from my sister. I-I didn't know that he messed with my brake lights. I swear." Sarah pleads.
"Why were you leaving him?" Ana asks, softly.
"He's gone over the edge. At first, it was just staged accidents. We'd shake down some rich losers for cash or set a few fires for a cut of the insurance money, but now -" Sarah starts.
"But now what?" Lucy asks.
"He's agreed to kill some guy's wife for a cut of the life-insurance policy." Sarah finishes.
"And when is this murder supposed to happen?" Tim questions.
"Later today." Sarah replies.
[Timeskip]
Ana, pretending to be the woman Mike is going to kill, leaves her house and gets into the drivers seat of the parked car. Her back is to Mike who is sneaking up on her with a gun. Before he can shoot, he's surrounded by cops and Ana who pulls out her weapons and points it at him too.
"Freeze! LAPD! Turn around! Drop your weapon! Drop your weapon! Keep your hands up! Sidestep to the right! Keep going! Get down on the ground! On your stomach! Hands out to the side! Now, don't move! Mike Garvey, you're under arrest for attempted murder." Tim yells.
"Nice wig, cupcake." Tim teases, seeing the blonde wig she's wearing.
"not a wig" Ana replies, softly. "I dyed it during lunch."
"what?!" Tim asks.
