"Where are we going?" (Y/n) tried to ask but the man wouldn't answer, simply mumbling something under his breath about her being careless.
They passed through various streets, gathering the unbothered looks of some people here and there. Though, (Y/n) couldn't imagine the sight of being forcefully dragged somewhere as a peculiarity in an Infected city. She doubted there was much that could shock people around here considering that even murder had a pass when it was in the name of love.
Soon, (Y/n) found herself alone in a dark abandoned alleyway with her mysterious saviour though. She choked back a yelp as the boy pushed her up against the wall and leaned over her, caging her between his arms. She held her breath, waiting for him to speak.
Clearly, he hadn't dragged her all the way here for nothing.
(Y/n) didn't even know why she had followed him in the first place, for all she knew he could very well be a psycho. And in an infected city, that wouldn't be surprising. Then again, considering the enhanced strength he possessed, (Y/n) didn't have much of a choice in following him anyways. Infected people always had the physical advantage.
So (Y/n) simply stared up at him as the boy scanned their surroundings with a frown. Was he checking to make sure no one was around? It looked like it, for the moment he saw no one was there, he started speaking, his eyes burning holes in her mind.
"What the hell are you doing here?" He said in a low voice, glaring down at her.
(Y/n) knew she should have been scared. Hell, an angry Infected was currently towering over her and caging her between his arms. But for some reason, she wasn't.
Not of him at least.
Because for an Infected, he seemed awfully worried about her being found out and sent to the Uninfected camp. Which was weird, considering that Infected people were supposed to see Uninfected as helpless beings in need of their protection. That's why they had created the Uninfected Camp in the first place, to watch over Uninfected and let an Infected lover come fetch them.
But for some reason, not only had this boy saved her ass from being dragged to the Uninfected camp, but he was also going out of his way to scrutinize their surroundings for any sign of another soul.
If she didn't know any better (Y/n) would be tempted to think that he was... Self aware. Or as self aware as an Infected could get.
One thing was for sure though, he seemed intent on protecting and hiding her from the other Infected, for whatever reason. A behaviour that strongly clashed with what (Y/n) had been taught about Infected.
Still, (Y/n) knew better than to lower her guard around someone who had the potential of a psycho. Literally.
"Are you fucking clueless? Don't you know what they do to people like you around here?" His green eyes darkened, and (Y/n) didn't need to ask what he meant by 'people like you' for her to know that he meant Uninfected people. "The moment they find out that you're not one of us they will throw you in the US. Do you have no sense of self preservation whatsoever?"
(Y/n) didn't really know how to answer this. First because it wasn't any of his business and honestly she had no interest in interacting with him more than necessary. Second, because she didn't need him to remind her of how dangerous the city was for her, she wasn't an idiot and she hadn't come here for funsies.
(Y/n) was here to find her sister. And as soon as she found Grey, the both of them would be on their merry way out of here.
"You're not gonna answer, are you?" The man heaved a tired sigh, brushing a hand through his brown locks. "Cat got your tongue?"
No, (Y/n) wasn't going to answer his questions. This didn't mean she didn't have some of her own for him though. So (Y/n) straightened up and looked him right in the eyes, steeling her nerves.
"Why did you help me back there?" She said, "You obviously know I'm-"
He clasped his hand over her mouth, shutting her up before she could finish her sentence.
"Not here. Don't say this word here. People can hear you." He whispered close to her face, his green eyes averting to the side where an old lady was passing in front of the narrow alleyway.
He took a step back, giving (Y/n) some much needed space to breathe.
"Follow me. I thought this place would be safe at this time of day but apparently not." The man said, this time letting her follow him at her pace.
(Y/n) wasn't going to comply so easily though.
"Where are we going?" She asked, planting her feet in the ground and staring pointedly at him. She wouldn't follow him unless she knew where exactly he was leading her. He might have been on her side for now, but there was no guarantee that he was safe to be around.
He was still a stranger after all. And an Infected at that.
"What tells me that you're not going to-"
"Take you to the US? Kill you?" The boy turned to her with a tired sigh, "Seriously if I'd wanted to do any of that I wouldn't have gone through the trouble of helping you back there in the first place. A 'thank you' would have been appreciated by the way."
Heat rose to (Y/n)'s cheeks and her gaze fell to the tip of her shoes, shame clawing its way up her neck.
"Thank you... For helping me."
"My pleasure. Now please, follow me. Talking here isn't safe." The boy turned back around and started walking, (Y/n) following behind him. She didn't know where they were going but from the looks of it he was probably taking her to his house for some privacy.
(Y/n) had never stepped foot in the city but it didn't take a genius to observe that this wasn't the most wealthy neighborhood. The streets were dark and grey, the tiny houses old and pretty run down from years of going without any renovations. It almost reminded her of home, except with much less greenery. In fact, there barely was any trace of nature in this neighborhood, the only bit of green being a slowly decaying flower in a pot on a windowsill.
Soon the two of them stopped in front of an old wooden house with a small porch. Some white sheets were hanging from a clothesline outside and an old creaking rocking chair had been placed on the porch.
The boy, whose name (Y/n) still didn't know, opened the front door and gestured for her to come in. She hesitantly followed him inside, idly standing in the middle of the entrance as he took off his coat and boots.
"Please take off your shoes. I cleaned the floor this morning and don't want any dirt around the house."
(Y/n) silently nodded and took off her shoes, cautiously venturing further into the house. Her newfound partner was standing in the kitchen, busying himself with boiling some water.
"Take a seat. You must be hungry, right?" He said, "You came all the way from the Uninfected community, didn't you? It's quite a long walk from here."
(Y/n) stiffened, warily observing the boy as he took out a pan and some eggs before popping some fresh bread into a toaster.
From what she knew no one was supposed to know about the Uninfected community other than its own members. Especially not some random infected dude who lived in the city. After having walked all night, (Y/n) was indeed hungry though, and wasn't about to decline some breakfast.
She sat down at the kitchen table, uncomfortable under the heavy silence that stretched between the two of them. Until she decided to break it herself.
"How do you know about the Uninfected community?"
The boy paused, obviously pondering his next choice of words before he finally answered.
"I've heard of it. From an Uninfected." He said, his back to her. And to (Y/n), only one thought occurred.
Grey.
"This Uninfected... Is there any chance it was a girl named Grey?" (Y/n) didn't know if that was a smart move, after all she still had no idea who this man was and what his intentions were. But this was a lead as good as any other in finding her sister.
"No." The boy said, setting a plate of eggs on toast in front of (Y/n) and a cup of steaming coffee. He took a seat beside her and crossed his arms over his chest, observing her intently.
"Thanks..." (Y/n) gulped, hesitantly taking a first bite of her food and desperate to find something to clear up the stifling atmosphere. "What's your name?"
"Tobias." He said, leaning back in his chair, green eyes still assessing her. "Sorry for not asking your name earlier, I'm not really good with pleasantries."
No shit. I hadn't noticed.
"(Y/n)." (Y/n) said and offered him a small smile. "Thanks, Tobias. For helping me back there and for the food."
"Don't mention it." Tobias said nonchalantly, a light frown etched between his features. "You mentioned a girl called Grey, is there any chance she's the reason you're here?"
(Y/n)'s food turned to ash in her mouth at the mention of her sister. She placed her toast back on the plate, inhaling deeply. She didn't like getting an Infected stranger involved in her search for Grey. But if Tobias knew something, (Y/n) wanted every piece of information she could get.
"She's my sister." She said, wiping her mouth with a red gingham printed napkin provided by Tobias. "She left home yesterday night to explore the city's surroundings. She never came back. I'm here to search for her."
Tobias remained silent for what felt like an eternity to (Y/n). Until he finally met her gaze.
"You should go home. It's a lost cause." He said, standing up from his chair and going to the sink to do the dishes.
(Y/n) remained in her chair, staring at him and completely flabbergasted, unable to wrap her head around what he'd just said. She couldn't believe the guts of this guy. He knew nothing about Grey, nor did he know anything about her. Yet here he was telling her that she should just go home and give up on her sister?
Yeah, (Y/n)'s blood boiled in her veins.
She stood up from her chair, taking her plate and forcefully setting it down in the sink. Tobias turned to look at her, and she glared.
"How would you know? You know nothing about us." She said, "Trust me, I will find my sister. And I'm not leaving without her."
Tobias dropped his gaze to the soapy plates in his hands, disinterested in picking a fight.
"I don't know you. But I know how things work around here. If your sister, an Uninfected, got caught, there's a good chance she was taken to the Uninfected Shelter. And either she's still there or she's already been taken in by an Infected." He turned to her, "Either way, it's not good. And unless you wanna meet the same fate, I suggest you go back home."
He didn't say anything more for a few minutes, busy doing the dishes and drying them off.
"You'd need an Infected ID to go around anyways. And you obviously don't have one." Tobias finally turned to her with a cold smile, and (Y/n) got the strongest urge to punch him in the face. And if Tobias hadn't been an Infected with enhanced strength, she probably would have done it. But alas, she still had an ounce of self preservation. As hard as it was to believe. "You'd get taken to the US in no time without it."
(Y/n) bit down on the inside of her cheek, the coppery taste of blood filling her mouth as she glared daggers at him. What was his fucking problem exactly? What did it change for him whether she stayed to find her sister or not? If he had acted any differently towards her, (Y/n) could have entertained the idea of him being obsessed with her or something. But Tobias had done nothing but act like an ass towards her. So his actions clearly weren't directed by his Infection.
No, Tobias was just an asshole. Who had helped her out, god knows why.
"Why did you even help me back there?" (Y/n) said, crossing her arms over her chest. "Why'd you even bother if you're just going to act like an ass afterwards?"
"I helped you, so that you could go home, because you don't have anything to do in this city." Tobias said, "And, just because I saved your ass doesn't mean I gotta be nice to you or anything. You should be thankful I even went out of my way to help you in the first place."
Technically he wasn't wrong. (Y/n) indeed didn't have anything to do in a city full of Infected people potentially out to place her in camps or make her theirs. She indeed should be thankful for Tobias saving her. But (Y/n) wasn't leaving this place without Grey. And it really wasn't Tobias's place to tell her whether or not she should stick around or go home.
"Well, thanks again for helping me." (Y/n) said with a sarcastic smile, leaning back over the kitchen counter. "I won't be going home any time soon though. Not without my sister. And if you can't help me find her, I'll just go my own way."
A hint of satisfaction flashed through (Y/n)'s chest at the sight of Tobias's surprised features. She wasn't going to stick around to see what more he had to say though. (Y/n) had places to be, and wherever that Uninfected camp was, she'd find it. With or without a silly ID.
And (Y/n) would have left if it wasn't for something halting her on her way.
"Balls." A masculine voice came from the entrance followed by the door slamming shut.
(Y/n) stood still as a statue, blood turning to ice in her veins as an old man entered the room. As far as Infected people went, Tobias had been relatively nice to be around. Same couldn't be said for the new stranger standing in front of her though.
The man's eyes narrowed as they fell on her and Tobias sighed loudly from behind (Y/n).
Yes, (Y/n) was terribly fucked.
"Who are you?"
