"Mija, ¿estás tratando de actuar como si pudieras cocinar otra vez?" Carmen asks, entering the kitchen around 5 am to see Ana trying to make banana bread. (darling, are you trying to act like you can cook again?)
Ana turns to her, making a pretend hurt face. "¡Puedo cocinar!" Ana says. (I can cook!)
Just as Ana says that, the oven starts beeping and smoke starts to spill out of it.
"Lo siento, debí haberte entendido mal, pensé que habías dicho que sabías cocinar." Carmen teases as Ana pulls out the burnt banana bread from the oven and smoke fills the kitchen. (I'm sorry, I must have misheard you, I thought you said you could cook.)
Ana pouts at her.
"abuela, ¿me haces el desayuno, por favor?" Ana asks, softly and defeated, watching as Carmen reaches into a cabinet and pulls out banana bread. Carmen is well aware of her granddaughter's love of banana bread and bakes a batch every week. (abuela, will you make me breakfast, please?)
"Gracias te amo eres la mejor" Ana says, softly, jumping on her toes when she sees the banana bread. Ana is very excited by food, which has always been a thing that her grandparents tease her about.
"solo come, mija" Carmen laughs, throwing away Ana's burnt banana bread. (just eat, darling)
Ana giggles and has a grin on her face as she eats a piece of the banana bread.
After being fed, Ana is a happy camper and skips off to work. She enters the roll call room and chats with Lucy for a few minutes until Nolan enters and roll call starts.
"All right. Look alive, look alive. Officer Nolan, you ready?" Grey asks.
"Yes, sir." Nolan replies.
"Good. Now, answer me this. What is your favorite part about the job? And don't say "To make a difference.""Grey asks.
"I wasn't going to. But it is." Nolan responds.
"What's your least favorite?" Grey asks.
"Oh, that's easy. Paperwork." Nolan answers.
Captain Anderson enters the roll call room, wearing a patrol uniform.
"Imagine how I feel" Anderson says.
Officers murmur and Ana hears Angela say "alright"
"Most of what a captain does is paperwork. 'Cause of that, I feel like I've lost touch with what being a cop is really about. People. It's not only the citizens that we serve and protect. It's every single one of you in this room. So, to remedy that, I've decided Sergeant Grey and I are gonna ride patrol today." Anderson explains.
"Together?" Bradford asks.
"No. We're each gonna ride with a rookie, and their respective T.O.s will pair up." Anderson responds.
"Ma'am, I'd be honored if you'd ride with me." Jackson says.
"trying to get rid of me, boot?" Angela asks.
Ana giggles a little bit.
"shortstack over there would never do me like that" Angela continues, gesturing to Ana.
"That is sweet, Officer West, but today I'm riding with Officer Chen." Anderson replies.
"Sergeant Grey, I'd be honored if you rode with Officer West today." Nolan says, making Ana and Jackson giggle.
"That's cute, Officer Nolan. But you know my heart belongs to you." Grey responds, making all of the other rookies giggle.
"Lucky me" Nolan responds.
Ana is sticking with Bradford but now she's paired with Bishop as well. She's bouncing ahead of them, grabbing the gear while they talk to Lucy.
"Lot of weight on your shoulders today, Boot." Bradford says.
"Why? What do you mean?" Lucy asks, confused.
"Riding with the captain is a huge responsibility." Bradford explains.
"If anything happens to her, well - I don't even know how to finish that sentence." Talia says.
"I do. Andersen gets a scratch, and you'll be working motor pool in Sylmar till you die of carbon monoxide poisoning." Bradford responds.
"you'll do great, Luce" Ana promises Lucy, softly.
Patrol starts off... interesting. Bradford and Bishop are bickering like an old married couple and Ana is just along for the ride.
They get a call at an apartment complex, should be easy, right?
"All right. I'll be contact, and you be cover with shortstack." Bradford says.
"You don't trust me to be contact?" Talia asks.
"Fine. You be contact, I'll be cover." Bradford decides, not caring all that much about it.
"Don't do me any favors." Talia responds.
They walk up to a door where a frightened woman stands on the other side.
"What's going on?" Bradford asks at the same time as. Bishop said "You called 911"
"But you said -" Bradford turns to Bishop confused
"Said I was gonna be con -" Bishop starts.
"um... hi, ma'am, what seems to be the problem?" Ana asks, softly, stepping forward and in front of Bradford and Bishop.
"We've had some recent break-ins. We had one last night. I went to do laundry just now, and someone's hiding in the basement." The lady explains.
"okay, do you know it's not a tenant?" Ana asks, softly.
"Yes. I shouted, and he didn't say anything. But I know he is still down there." The lady continues.
"okay, we'll go check it out" Ana promises, softly.
They arrive at the basement and stand at the top of the stairs.
"Downward-facing stairway -" Bradford says.
"Stairway, downward facing -" Talia corrects.
"I'm calling this." Bradford responds.
"Of course you are." Talia snarks back.
"I do have more experience. You take point, Officer Bishop. I'll hook left." Bradford commands.
"Oh, so now it's "Officer Bishop," huh? Mm. Fine. After you." Talia says.
Ana walks down the stairways behind Bradford and Talia with flashlights on and guns drawn.
"LAP-" Bradford starts to yell out only to be interrupted by Talia
"Police." Talia calls.
"LAPD!" Bradford shouts over Talia
"Police!" Talia says in response.
"Looks clear so far. You just keep holding point." Bradford says.
"It's a box, Tim. There's no one here." Talia points out while Ana clears the basement, ending up standing near a closet.
She debates opening it, looking back at Talia and Bradford who are still bickering.
"Stick to the S.O.P.s, just like I taught you." Bradford says.
""Standard Operating Procedures" also means use common sense. My T.O. after you was big on common sense." Talia argues.
"Officer Belgrave's safety tactics are for crap." Bradford shoots down.
"Oh, here we go. The great SWAT debate." Talia rolls her eyes.
"There's no debate. There's a right way and a wrong way." Bradford argues.
There's a clattering noise behind the door of the closet that Ana is standing near.
"He's in there. You breach the door. I'll take point from here. Dynamic entry. Remember to get clear of the fatal funnel." Bradford says, pointing to the closet.
"You breach the door. I breached the last one. And we should use the "wedge and slow search" technique." Talia argues.
"I'll breach the door" Ana says, softly, successfully handling that argument.
"Behind the panel. Suspect. LAPD. We hear you in there. Slowly open the door and show us your hands." Bradford calls into the closet.
"Control, 7-Adam-15, we have a possible 459 suspect at our location. Send us another unit." Talia says into the radio.
"Why'd you call for backup? If we can't handle one mope, we shouldn't be doing this job." Bradford argues.
"What if it's not just a mope?" Talia points out.
"If it's not a mope, he wouldn't be hiding in there. Breach the door, boot." Bradford orders. Ana nods, moving to breach it but is interrupted by Talia.
"What for? He's not going anywhere. Time's on our side." Talia says.
"Officer Bishop, do I need to remind you I'm senior officer on scene? Which means I'm in charge. Now, breach the door, boot" Bradford orders
Ana obeys, opening the door and stepping inside only to be sprayed by a skunk. It gets into her eyes and she lets out a little whimper in pain, holding her hands to her face.
"what, boot, what's wrong?" Bradford asks.
"skunk" Ana coughs out, having inhaled some of it too.
"Oh, hell no" Talia says, taking a step back.
"If we had done a wedge and a slow search, you would've seen from a safe distance. Give me the keys." Talia says.
"no, I'm driving" Bradford replies.
"uh uh, she's not stinking up my shop" Talia answers.
Bradford snatches the keys out of her hand and leads Ana up into the shop.
Talia follows after, pissed off and she tries to get into the backseat but it's locked.
"hey! what the hell are you doing?" Talia asks.
"it's my shop now" Bradford smirks.
"how am I supposed to get back?" Talia yells.
"Oh, now you want my advice. Well, here it is. Call a cab." Bradford responds, before driving away.
[Timeskip]
"Quizás extrañe el olor a zorrillo." Jose says, after Ana gets out of a bath of tomato soup. (Maybe I miss the smell of skunk).
Now, the whole apartment smells like Campbell's tomato soup.
"Muy divertido." Ana replies, sarcastically. (Very funny.)
"Todavía me siento asqueroso. Voy a usar toda el agua caliente esta noche, no hay debates al respecto." Ana continues. (I still feel disgusting. I'm using all of the hot water tonight, no debates on that.)
"Ahora espera... Viene un amigo y estábamos planeando usar el agua." Mario protests. (Now hold on... I have a friend coming over and we were planning to use the water.)
"No. No. No, no necesito oír hablar de tu vida sexual. El agua es toda mía esta noche, si tú y un amigo quieren jugar con el agua o lo que sea, entonces pueden usar su agua." Ana shakes her head. (No. No. Nope, I don't need to hear about your sex life. Water is all mine tonight, if you and friend want to do water play or whatever, then you can use their water.)
Mario opens his mouth to protest when there is a knock at the door. Ana sighs and opens the front door.
"Hey" Talia and Bradford stand on the other side.
"Hi" Ana says, softly, though her gaze is driven downwards when she sees Bradford holding food.
"is that food?" Ana asks, softly.
"yes, it is" Bradford chuckles, handing her the food.
"it's our apology for being assholes earlier" Talia says.
"we're your superiors and yet we were the ones who messed up today" Bradford continues.
"well, thank you, and it's fine, really" Ana says, softly.
"Por favor, nieta, ¿qué tal si usamos el agua cuando hayas terminado?" Mario brings up, still pleading. (Please, granddaughter, how about we use the water when you're done?)
"You're not going to use my dirty bath water to have sex" Ana replies, making Bradford and Talia's eyes widen.
"Shit, sorry, Spanish" Ana realizes, softly.
"No vas a usar el agua sucia de mi baño para tener sexo." Ana says the same thing, but in Spanish.
Ana turns back to Bradford and Talia.
"thank you for the food" Ana smiles, while Talia and Bradford just nod, a tiny bit traumatized.
