{Whoo! Halfway done! Thank you to the people who have voted. I'm planning to do all six seasons but I really want to whip out this season by Saturday}
Ana and the other rookies are at the reception desk, giving people gift cards if they hand in a weapon.
"Two firearms for two gift cards. Thanks for making our streets a little safer." Jackson says to a man after he gave Jackson two guns.
"So, we're just gonna destroy these? What if one was used in a crime?" Lucy asks.
"I feel like we could be more environmentally responsible with this stuff" Ana says, softly, as she puts the empty guns into a big bin.
"Hey, "no questions asked" means just that. And it's the best way to get people to turn in their unregistered weapons." Jackson replies.
"That and the $100 gift cards." Nolan adds.
"I need 100 dollars" Ana mumbles under her breath.
"Oh. Hang on a second. Sorry. Let me help you with those." Nolan says, walking over to an elderly lady who is struggling with a big suitcase.
"Oh. Thank you, Officer Nolan." The older lady says, reading Nolan's name tag on his uniform.
"Yeah. And you are?" Nolan asks, politely
"I'm Alma." The older lady answers.
"Nice to meet you. Are all these yours?" Nolan asks.
"Oh, no, no. They - They were my father's. He was a paratrooper back in World War II. And when he came back from the war, he brought all this with him. I've been carrying it with me since he passed in '74." Alma explains.
"Oh, Alma this is in good condition. You could get real money for this." Nolan says, looking at one of the rifles.
"Oh, no. I wouldn't know where to start. Besides, I'm moving in with my son's family. I don't want these around my grandkids." Alma shakes her head.
"Well, we are here to help." Nolan smiles.
"Oh, those were his pistols. He brought them from Germany to San Francisco. And that one there is Ginny." The lady says as he takes out pistols and then a land mine.
"Alma, is that a land mine?" Nolan asks, shakily
"Yes, a claymore, I think. From his time in Vietnam." Alma responds.
"okay, everyone, if you could please follow me outside, we're just having a minor issue" Ana says, softly, starting to clear out the rest of the people in the reception area.
"Uh, can we get a bomb squad to the front lobby? Now." Jackson asks into the telephone.
Lucy walks around to escort Alma to safety.
"Well, I'm so glad you brought this in, because these are extremely unstable. Tell you what. I'm gonna stay here to dispose of this. Officer Chen is gonna get you to a safe distance, and then we'll get you those gift cards we talked about." Nolan assures.
"Oh, uh, what about the ones in my trunk?" Alma asks.
Just then, while Ana is outside leading the people away from the bomb, a car explodes.
"um... we need fire and RA at the Mid-Wiltshire police station" Ana says into her radio.
"scratch that, I need at least a million dollars" Ana murmurs, when she realizes her car was parked next to the one that blew up.
[Timeskip]
Thankfully the next day is Ana's day off, she plans to do some cleaning around the apartment and maybe make it smell less like tomato soup. The smell still permeates the apartment despite it being a week since Ana used tomato soup to get the skunk smell off of her.
She's in the middle of eating another piece of banana bread when she gets a text on her phone.
Mandatory Emergency Callback
"well, I guess the apartment's permanent smell is tomato soup" Ana says, softly, grabbing her keys and leaving.
[Timeskip - 9 AM | Briefing]
"Thank you for coming in on your day off. The Vice President is making an unscheduled visit to our city. So it's all hands on deck. Agent Danvers." Captain Anderson said.
"the Vice President of what?" Ana murmurs to Lucy, who is sitting next to her.
"the Vice President of the United States" Lucy whispers, giggling at her friend's stupidity.
"oh, I forgot we had one of those" Ana whispers back.
"Thank you, Captain. As always, the Secret Service appreciates the LAPD's assistance in clearing and securing "Redwood's" route. These are your Operation Plan Manuals." Danvers says.
"who's Redwood?" Ana whispers to Lucy.
"the Vice President" Lucy whispers back.
"the Vice President of what?" Ana whispers.
"the Vice President of the United States" Lucy whispers.
"there are two Vice Presidents?" Ana whispers, now confused.
"oh my god" Grey groans, having overheard Lucy and Ana's conversation.
"do you not vote?" Lucy whispers.
"no" Ana whispers.
"why not?" Lucy whispers.
"immigrants don't vote" Ana whispers back.
"why?" Lucy whispers.
"it's a rule" Ana whispers.
"what rule?" Lucy whispers.
"it's just a rule, I don't know what to tell you" Ana whispers.
"These assignments are your sole priority today. You will not field calls from dispatch. Let the day shift deal with that. Captain?" Grey says, turning his attention back to the problem at hand.
"Most of you know the drill. For our rookies, today is going to be ugly. Everything we do to ensure the safety of Redwood will create gridlock. It's important to be patient and vigilant. That's all. You're dismissed." Anderson says.
"wait, so you seriously don't vote?" Lucy asks, as they all stand up.
"no" Ana says, softly.
"it's important, it's how we keep corrupt government officials out of office" Lucy says.
"fine, fine, I'll go vote" Ana huffs.
"well you can't do it right now" Lucy answers.
"why not?" Ana asks, softly.
"there are specific times you can vote" Lucy explains.
"that sounds like too much work" Ana decides, softly.
"oh my god" Lucy turns to Bradford, looking for help.
"I don't know what you're talking about, I voted for two Vice Presidents" Bradford smirks.
"I don't get all the fuss.It seems like we're getting a day of overtime just to close roads and hang signs." Lucy says as they get gear from the quartermaster.
"That's like saying being drawn and quartered is fun time with horses." Bradford replies.
"what's-?" Ana starts to ask.
"horses don't like it when you ride them" Bradford explains, lying but knowing not to confuse Ana.
"oh, makes sense" Ana nods, softly.
"We're literally creating traffic jams during rush hour on purpose." Angela says.
"Everything we do today is gonna piss someone off." Bradford continues
"I mean, we deal with angry people every shift, but a day of OT means I can finally fix the air-conditioning on my car." Lucy says, softly.
Bradford chuckles at that.
"what?" Lucy asks.
"Air-conditioning makes you soft. You gotta get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That's the job." Bradford responds.
"Is he serious?" Jackson asks.
"As a heart attack, Boot. Which I gotta say you almost gave the watch commander back there." Bradford smirks.
"Seriously, playing with your phone during a briefing is a cardinal sin." Angela says.
"I-I lost focus." Jackson responds.
"I only hope you were canceling something important, because Grey won't forget that for a while." Angela replies.
"Just, uh, breakfast with my mom." Jackson responds.
Jackson and Ana are given a whole bunch of gear.
"thank you" Ana says, softly, to the quartermaster, who gives her a tiny salute.
"Is that all for us?" Lucy asks.
"Yep. Extra road flares for the uptick in accidents. Extra ticket books for the increase in idiots." Bradford answers.
"Extra crime-scene tape for blocking sidewalks. And cones for closing roads." Angela adds.
"Okay, okay, I get it." Lucy says.
"Oh, we're not done yet. Hats and bats. Tactical helmets and 42-inch batons for riot control, along with heavy-duty vests if things get ugly." Bradford continues.
"And my personal favorite, the 40-millimeter tear-gas launcher for when democracy gets real." Angela grins.
"But, hey, at least you'll be able to ride in comfort." Bradford tells Lucy as they walk to the shop to set it up.
They end up at a homeless camp.
"All right, listen up. Until tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., the stretch of Vine between Melrose and Franklin will be off limits. Sanitation services will be arriving in 20 minutes. You'll have until then to pack up. Rope off the block. Make sure everyone moves off." Bradford announces.
Ana goes over a sleeping man and tries to wake him up.
"Sir? Sir? Sorry to wake you, but I'm gonna need you to start packing up, all right?" Ana says, softly.
A fight breaks out between two women nearby.
"Bitch, those are my sneakers!" One of the women yells.
"Get out!" the other yells.
"Oh, hey! Hey, hey! Hey! Stop it! Just stop." Lucy says, trying to get between them.
Lucy wrestles one of the woman to the ground and cuffs her.
"Hands behind your back. Don't move. All right. Stand up. Here we go." Lucy says, hauling the woman up onto her feet.
"Lucy" Ana murmurs, softly, staring at a dirty needle stuck into Lucy's side. Lucy looks down and starts to panic.
"Stop. Don't move" Bradford orders.
"I didn't see it. I mean, it was - it was on the ground, and -"Lucy stutters out.
"It's okay, but I need to pull it out" Bradford says.
He pulls out the dirty needle and there is blood on the tip.
"What's the procedure when an officer is exposed on duty?" Bradford asks Lucy, trying to get her to focus on him.
"what?" Lucy asks.
"Focus. What do we do now?" Bradford asks while Ana helps other officers get the area cleared off.
"Um..."Collect the evidence. Bring the officer and the item to the nearest hospital to test for infections and diseases that may have been transmitted."" Lucy says, shakily.
"And where's the nearest hospital?" Bradford asks.
"Shaw Memorial." Lucy exhales.
"Make sure an officer posts up here until Veep passes through." Bradford tells another officer.
"Got it." The officer says.
"Come on. Let's go." Bradford says to both Lucy and Ana. Ana nods, getting all of their stuff and putting it in the back of the car while Bradford helps Lucy get in the passenger seat.
They arrive at the hospital. Ana is now holding Lucy's hand and stroking the back of it with her thumb.
"Hi. Um, I need to get my blood tested. I got stuck with a used hypodermic needle." Lucy says, nervously, going up to the desk.
"Oh. Uh, yeah, one sec. Um, where did that..." The male nurse trails off and hands Lucy a clipboard with a form on it.
"If you could fill this out. Have a seat in the waiting room, and we'll be right with you." The nurse says. Lucy turns to do that, but protective Bradford mode is turned on.
"You must be new, because no experienced nurse lets an armed cop sit with civilians. What do you think happens if somebody attempts to grab her weapon?" Bradford asks.
"I-I-I-" The nurse stutters.
"The hospital protocol dictates that an armed officer be seen immediately. So set her up in a room right now and find a doctor." Bradford orders.
"Yes, sir. Right this way." The nurse says, standing.
Ana meanwhile, squeezes Lucy's hand and has a smile on her face, witnessing Tim Bradford getting protective over Lucy.
Tim is out in the hallway with the nurse while Ana tries to calm Lucy down.
"hey, it's going to be okay" Ana promises, softly, gently taking Lucy's phone from her and slipping it into her own pocket.
"you don't know that" Lucy says. "HIV is three times more prevalent in the homeless community than it is in the general population. Hepatitis is five times more prevalent -"
"hey, hey, listen, whatever happens, you're going to get through it because you are a badass and I'm going to be right here the whole time when you need me" Ana says, softly.
"What- What if I get hep C from this needle, and one day I get shot, and you're trying to stop the bleeding and you forget that, you know, you have a you have a cut on your hand? Or worse- a kid gets shot and I'm the one with the cut? And it's just -" Lucy continues to ramble.
"Then you'll be a cop with hep C and a cut. You signed up to put your life on the line. That means your health, too. Focusing on fear isn't gonna change the outcome. Lab results are gonna take hours. Do you want to hang out in the worst-case-scenario panic room, or you want to get back to work? Get that air-conditioning fixed?" Bradford says, entering the room.
"I thought air-conditioning made me soft." Lucy protests, softly.
"Well, it does, but I can't solve all your problems today. Go splash some water on your face. Let's get back out there." Bradford says.
"Okay" Lucy agrees, walking out of the room to splash some water on her face.
"took her phone" Bradford notices, seeing that Ana has Lucy's phone in her pocket.
"she was falling down the WEBMD rabbit hole" Ana explains, softly.
Bradford gives her a nod of approval and gestures for them to go ahead and meet back up with Lucy. Ana smiles, thanking him when he holds the hospital room door open for her.
"7-Adam-19 A to B, Tim, Ana I need you, room 113. Hey. Hey. Look, just put down the needle, okay? You don't need to do this." Lucy's voice comes over the radio and they rush to the room.
When they come inside, a woman about to inject her comatose brother with bleach and Lucy has her taser pointed at the woman.
"Page a trauma surgeon and get an O.R. on standby. Incoming gunshot wound." Bradford says to a nurse.
"Please. Please. Mike never had a chance to sign a DNR. He and my sister-in-law got married six months ago. She's his medical proxy, but she can't let him go. She doesn't see that she's hurting him." The woman begs.
"And you think that injecting him with bleach is better? Listen, you have no right to decide if he lives or dies. What you're talking about is murder." Lucy reasons.
"He's already dead."
The woman lifts up the needle.
"Hey, hey. Hey, hey, hey, put the needle down. Put it down. Hey. Look at me. Right here. Right here. Put the needle down, okay?" Lucy says.
"No." the woman answers.
The woman sticks the needle in the man's neck. Ana is faster and fires a taser at the woman. Lucy runs over and removes the needle from the man's neck.
"Did she push the plunger?" Bradford asks while Ana cuffs the woman.
"No." Lucy breathes a sigh of relief
"Can't leave you alone for a minute." Bradford shakes his head.
[Timeskip]
"Grey's calling me back to the station." Bradford responds.
"Okay. Should I come with you?" Lucy asks.
"No. You stay here, wait for your results. I'll be back when I'm done. Shortstack, stay here too, make sure she doesn't work herself up again" Bradford orders.
"Tim? Thanks." Lucy calls after him.
"For what? Doing my job?" Bradford says, turning around to glance at his two boots before walking away.
"can I have my phone now?" Lucy asks, turning to Ana.
"hell no" Ana giggles.
"no, you're going to explain to me how we have two Vice Presidents" Ana decides.
Lucy laughs, shaking her head.
[Timeskip]
The doctor enters the room. He opens his mouth to speak but Lucy beats him to it.
"just tell me, please" Lucy pleads.
"Okay. So, your initial test came back negative for any viral infections, like HIV or hepatitis. But your blood work indicated the presence of a staph infection." The doctor explains.
"what does that mean?" Lucy asks.
"We need to get you started on intravenous antibiotics immediately. Some strains of staph are drug-resistant, so we'll monitor the wound for any abscesses or cellulitis. Okay?" The doctor asks.
"okay, thank you" Lucy grins, turning to Ana and hugging her.
"so I guess you won't be the cop with Hep C and a cut" Ana giggles, texting Tim to meet them at the hospital.
Ana excuses herself so that Lucy and the doctor can talk about the details and she has a huge smile on her face.
Though Ana never did figure out how the US government works until Lucy drags her to vote two months later.
Even then, she'll tell you that there are two Vice Presidents.
{I tried really hard to be funny this episode, I don't know if I succeeded, probably not if we're going to be honest. I know I cut out that whole scene with Jackson and Lucy but I really wanted Ana and Lucy to bond}
