"Wear the damn shirt" Tim says, trying to get Ana to put on the shirt of a picture of Lucy just waking up.
"it seems mean" Ana frowns.
"I'll buy you a donut" Tim offers.
"okay" Ana agrees, putting the shirt on under her uniform.
Ana walks into roll call and sits next to Lucy. At some point, Lucy decided to sit at Ana's table while Jackson and Nolan sit at the table across the aisle. It doesn't really matter but it makes Ana smile every time Lucy does it, because it means she finally has a friend.
"Oh, no, Officer Nolan. You will be leading roll call this morning." Grey says, when Nolan comes in to see Grey in his seat.
"Sir?" Nolan questions
"I didn't stutter. Get up there." Grey urges. Nolan goes up to the podium and there is laughter and heckling.
"What now?" Nolan asks.
"The clipboard." Grey says.
"um "Memo to all divisions from the Chief of Police. Complaints about police officer entitlement have risen sharply during the last few months." Nolan reads out from the clipboard.
"Sir?" Nolan calls on Grey when he raises his hand.
"Do you know what that means? Police officer entitlement?" Grey asks.
"I assume it has to do with unauthorized perks. Free food, things of that nature." Nolan responds.
"And what is LAPD's policy on gratuities?" Grey asks.
"No officer shall receive any gratuity, gift, favor, or promise thereof, as it may result in, or be perceived as, payment in exchange for influence, bias, or direction of an investigation or enforcement of punishable offenses." Nolan responds.
"Nicely done. Cabrera, Chen, West, will you please join Officer Nolan up front?" Grey says.
The rookies stand up and stand with Nolan.
"Have your training officers discussed this policy with you?" Grey asks.
"Yes, sir." The rookies reply.
"And what was your takeaway?" Grey asks.
"not to accept free food from civilians while I'm on duty, sir" Ana responds, softly.
"Sir, if I may?" Angela asks.
"Oh, sounds like a little CYA." Grey smirks.
"No, sir. Boot and I walk the straight and narrow. But businesses like having cops around. A half-priced meal every once in a while is just community relations." Angela points out.
"It doesn't mean we show them favoritism." Bradford adds.
"You agree with this, Officer Bishop?" Grey asks.
"I'm not saying I've never accepted a free cup of coffee, but it's usually the exception, not the norm." Talia responds.
"What about you, Officer Nolan?" Grey asks.
"I got into this job to help people, not to help myself to free stuff." Nolan answers.
"Cute line. It's a bunch of bull, but -" Grey starts.
"It's not." Nolan interrupts.
"Really? Do you pay fair market value for that beach house you live in?" Grey asks, raising an eyebrow.
"No, sir. But I act as caretaker for the main house when Ben is away, so technically I am exchanging services for my rent." Nolan responds.
"And what happens when that exchange isn't enough? And your buddy gets a ticket - or worse?" Grey asks.
"Then he'll have to pay for his actions." Nolan replies.
"Okay. Favors are a slippery slope, people. And so are freebies. Look, I like to keep it real in here. There is the letter of the law and there is the spirit. It is your jobs to know the difference. But make no mistake - as police officers, you have power. Usually we like to focus on the kind that you holster on your side, but the power that lives within your badge can be equally as dangerous. That's it. All right, guys. Be safe out there." Grey dismisses them.
[Timeskip]
"7-Adam-19, break-in at Westside Fertility Clinic." Dispatch says over the radio.
They walk through the shattered window front of the clinic.
"We haven't received a single freebie since I've been with you, so why did you defend that to Grey?" Lucy asks, curiously.
"Because hard rules like that are stupid. What we do doesn't exist in a vacuum. Circumstances dictate actions. Not the other way around." Bradford explains.
"Police. Anyone here?" Bradford calls.
"Yes. We had a break-in." A doctor says, coming over.
"I can see that. There's been a rash of burglaries in the neighborhood recently. Mostly addicts looking for stuff to sell." Bradford replies.
"This wasn't an addict. They took embryos." The doctor explains.
"That's a new one on me." Bradford says.
"Do I write this up as a burglary or an abduction?" Lucy asks.
"would you have to send out an amber alert for each embryo or an amber alert for the embryo's as a whole?" Ana asks, softly.
"It's a burglary" Bradford replies before Ana can get any deeper into a controversial topic.
"Officer, there's a crucial time element here. Without proper temperature control, those embryos will be compromised." The doctor insists.
"Do you have any idea who took them?" Ana asks, softly.
"They're part of an ugly custody dispute. A lesbian couple. The eggs we harvested were from only one of the women, Marilyn Tenni. Her ex is suing for custody rights even though she doesn't have a biological connection." The doctor explains.
"Okay, we're gonna need names and addresses for both women." Bradford decides.
"Of course. But you should know when I called Marilyn to tell her, she got very upset said she was gonna kill her." The doctor warns.
[Timeskip]
As they approach the house, they can hear arguing from inside of two women.
"LAPD. We're coming in." Bradford calls, entering the apartment. Ana is behind him and Lucy brings up the rear.
A woman, the ex wife, is holding a rack of test tubes while Marilyn has a metal bar in her hand and is threatening the ex wife with it.
"Give them to me." Marilyn yells
"They're mine too." The ex wife calls back.
"They are not." Marilyn yells.
"Hey, hey. Put down the weapon." Bradford says.
"Those are my embryos. She - She stole them from the clinic." Marilyn says, turning to the cops.
"No, they are your eggs, and we had them fertilized by a sperm donor together. You remember?" The ex wife responds.
"Yeah, and the judge ruled that I get to use them. Do you remember that?" Marilyn argues back
"Not if they're gone!" The ex wife says, about to throw the tubes.
Marilyn lunges for her. Bradford stops Marilyn and hands her off to Lucy while Ana approaches the ex wife.
"ma'am, please?" Ana asks, softly.
"Please. Those - Those are my last chance to carry my own baby. Please, don't take that from me. Please." Marilyn begs.
"We were supposed to have kids together. I saw you through your whole cancer treatment. And then you dump me for a yoga instructor?" The ex wife yells
"hey, hey" Ana says, softly. "I get it, I really do. I had a crush in college, long story short, I bought him a car and caught him having sex in it with my "best friend" a day later. Point is, that it hurts, it hurts a lot when you give so much to someone and they don't give you the same. I get it. But those embryos aren't going to change anything. They aren't going to fix your marriage, please?"
"you shouldn't date men" The ex wife sniffles, putting the tubes down on a table.
"yeah, probably" Ana smiles, softly, relaxing.
[Timeskip]
"It doesn't seem right to lock up Marilyn, too. She was only trying to protect her embryos." Lucy remarks, frowning.
"Nothing we can do. She committed assault. Domestic-violence laws are strict for a reason." Bradford frowns.
"What happened to "circumstances dictate actions"?" Lucy asks.
"Trust me, this is one rule I'm all for. Cemeteries are filled with women who'd still be alive if cops had been forced to hook up their spouses the second he or she laid hands." Bradford responds, making Ana smile.
"That is a very enlightened attitude." Lucy says.
"You seem surprised." Bradford says.
"Sir, you surprise me every day." Lucy responds.
"Uh-huh. Go gas up the shop. And wipe that smile from your face, shortstack" Bradford calls as Ana and Lucy head over to fill the shop tank.
Ana sticks her tongue out at him, making him fight back a smile before she skips off.
Lucy sees Nolan so Ana goes ahead to actually fill the tank, because Ana knows that Lucy is distracted by Nolan and has already forgotten about it.
[Timeskip]
They're called into the briefing room because apparently Nolan and Bishop stumbled upon an undercover narcotics officer.
"I've been undercover inside La Eme for almost a year. Working my way closer to the offshoot in Boyle Heights called Ocampo Loco. They control the cash flow and then bundle the drug money and ship it back to Mexico." Robert Ortiz explains.
"How much money are we talking?" Nolan asks.
"Right now, at least a million. The word is they're gonna ship it tonight. I was about to report it when my cover was blown by, uh, Matthew Rodriguez, who tried to kill me, so I shot him in self-defense. Uh, you know the rest." Ortiz answers.
"Officer Ortiz has bravely volunteered to go back in to protect his cover and set up our tactical operation." Grey explains.
"Last time I was at the house, it was four halcones guarding the money. Heavy-hitters." Ortiz mentions
"We're gonna gear up heavy, position ourselves down the street, be ready to initiate a full-blown raid on the house once Ortiz gives us the signal." Grey explains.
"Rookies, this is your first high-level tactical operation. Let's be prepared." Anderson says before dismissing them.
[Timeskip]
"You know the specs of this equipment, Officer Chen?" Bradford asks.
"That's a Blackhawk Dynamic Entry Special Op Ram." Chen responds, taking the Ram from Bradford.
"How much does it weigh?" Bradford quizzes.
"60 pounds, sir." Chen responds
"Hold it tight. You'll be the breacher. You'll buy a round for every swing it takes to knock that door down." Bradford answers.
"can I hold it?" Ana asks, softly.
"cupcake, you don't even weigh sixty pounds" Bradford teases.
[Timeskip]
They're waiting outside when the signal is given.
"Police! Open the door! We have a search warrant." Jackson calls into the house
Lucy manages to bring the door down with one swing and they pour in. Ana runs to the back room on the right.
"Open door. Get away from that window. Show me your hands." Ana orders, her voice as loud as it goes.
"Step back or I'll shoot. Get down on your knees now." Angela says, appearing behind Ana's back.
"clear" Ana calls.
"good hit" Ana smiles, glancing at Lucy.
"Hands up. Fingers behind your head. Do it now. Back up." Angela says arresting the suspect.
"Hands up! Interlace your fingertips behind your head." Talia says, "arresting" Ortiz as well.
"you okay?" Talia whispers to Ortiz.
"Yeah. Barely." Ortiz responds.
"We'll divert to the hospital on the way out. Clear! Coming out!" Talia says.
"Rookies, special assignment. Follow me." Grey instructs, guiding them to a room with so much money that Ana freezes a little in the door way.
"Sorry. Here's what happens now. You see, the money counters and the videographer are on their way. In the meantime, you three get to watch the money. Two people with it at all times. No selfies. Enjoy." Grey says, leaving the room and closing the door.
"Where does all this money go?" Lucy asks.
"Cash seized during drug raids goes back to Narcotics, where it's used again for undercover ops." Jackson replies.
"That's more money than I've ever seen in one place." Ana says in awe.
"Can you imagine? I'd buy a car - no, a helicopter. And learn to fly it so I could avoid all the traffic." Lucy says.
"Yeah, that first big purchase is always tricky, right? The barber in Foxburg? He won the lottery. Bought a big, fancy boat. Ran it aground in Freeport, coked to the gills. I don't think a boat is a good idea." Nolan shakes his head.
"What about you? What would you spend it on?" Lucy asks Ana.
"I'd buy each of my grandparents their own home in LA" Ana says, softly.
"and you?" Lucy asks, turning to Jackson.
"I'm not playing that game. This is drug money." Jackson shakes his head.
"Come on. We're just talking. A million dollars lands on your doorstep. What do you do? Go. And don't say you'd set aside 30% for taxes." Nolan asks.
"Um - A new car, I guess. Um, or maybe a trip. Been wanting to do a little traveling." Jackson. responds.
"Let me guess. You'd visit police departments all around the world. Learn their techniques." Lucy teases.
"No" West frowns, not noticing the look that Chen and Nolan exchange that says 'yes he would'.
[Timeskip]
"I'd pay all of Henry's tuition with the money. Just so he didn't have those student loans hanging over his head." Nolan says.
"Yeah, they're no fun. I'll be paying mine off until I'm 60." Lucy agrees.
"I'm lucky, I managed to get a refugee tuition" Ana says, softly. "but I still have a lot of debt, bunch of outstanding medical debt"
"Yeah, well, with this money, you could pay them all off and still rent an amazing place by the ocean. Meanwhile, I couldn't afford to buy the room in the house I'm living in." Nolan says.
"Bet it would have got you something pretty nice back in Foxburg, though." Jackson mentions.
"Hmm. Biggest house in town and then some. Still can't get used to the cost of living in Los Angeles. It's like you have to add an extra zero to everything." Nolan says.
"You know, I never really thought about money growing up. We always just had enough, you know? Yeah." Jackson says.
"That's what I thought until my parents went bankrupt when I was nine. It took a couple of really bad years before we got back up on our feet." Lucy replies.
"my whole life has been about money" Ana responds, softly. "anything to put food on the table at night, you know?"
"Ah, been there. Definitely been days where I would have killed to be sitting across from this much money, there for the taking." Nolan responds.
"me too" Ana says, softly. "even just a few years ago, if I was left alone with this much money..."
"Hey, don't even joke about that. I've heard too many stories from my dad about cops who started filling their pockets, convincing themselves that it was a victimless crime, that they were entitled to a little extra compensation for their troubles." Jackson says.
"Okay. Well, relax. That's not us." Lucy says.
"Yeah, that's what they thought at first, too. But then you take a bite of the crème brûlée, and the next thing you know, you're doing three to five for felony theft." Jackson convinces
"I'm sorry. Crème brûlée?" Lucy asks.
"is that an American thing?" Ana asks, softly.
"Never mind." Jackson shakes his head.
"Oh, man." Nolan says.
"What?" Jackson asks.
"I just I- still have to pee, but all this - I'll be right back." Nolan says, rushing out of the room.
[Timeskip]
"I'd still do the job. Even if I came into money." Jackson says at night.
"That's not a shock." Nolan answers.
"You know, I would, too. You've known what you wanted to do since birth, but I just figured out. There's no way I would bail now." Lucy agrees.
"What about you?" Lucy asks Ana.
"I don't know... They've been through so much, I hate leaving them every day, because I don't know if I'll come back at the end of the day. I'm their only family they have left.. and they joke around and stuff, but I can tell that it kills them inside that I have such a dangerous job... so maybe I'd find a more relaxing job, one where they rest easy" Ana answers, softly.
"What about you? Would you quit the job?" Lucy asks Nolan.
"And pass up on being hazed on a daily basis by training officers ten years my junior? Come on." Nolan chuckles.
They hear a car pull up and they stand up. Two officers enter the room.
"All right. Officers Graser and Williams arriving on the scene. 1:17 a.m., relieving four uniformed officers. What are your names?" Williams says into a recording device while Graser holds a video camera and is recording them.
"Nolan, Cabrera, Chen, West." Nolan responds.
"Anyone else that's come in or out?" William asks.
"No, ma'am." Lucy shakes her head.
"Great. Hit the road. We got it from here." Williams says.
They all get ready to leave but Ana pauses, looking at the money.
"hey, you good?" Lucy asks, softly, coming over and sliding her hand into Ana's.
"they've been through so much, all of their children and grandchildren killed, only for their one surviving family member to choose a dangerous job where she can barely put a roof above their heads" Ana murmurs, her eyes getting glassy.
"hey, you're doing the best you can, plus, you are so good at this job and your grandparents know how much you love it, come on, they're probably waiting for you" Lucy says, guiding her out of the house.
[Timeskip]
Bradford was surprisingly gentle waking her up, probably because he saw her red eyes and knew she fell asleep crying.
Ana gets out of bed and follows him to Lucy's apartment to get her as well.
Soon, they're standing in the briefing room. Once Lucy saw Ana, she's held her hand since.
"What's going on?" Talia asks as she and Nolan approach. Angela and Jackson were here first, then Bradford and his girls and now Nolan and Talia.
"They told us to gather our Boots, same as you." Bradford responds.
"you good?" Talia asks, waving a hand in front of Ana's face because she's spaced out.
"yeah, sorry" Ana murmurs.
"it's fine" Talia says, looking concerned.
Captain Anderson and Sergeant Grey walk into the room.
"We have a situation. Money counters are telling us that we're missing $250,000." Anderson says.
"And you four were the only ones left alone with the money." Grey adds.
"Well, the money counters must have made a mistake." Nolan says.
"There's video of them entering the garage and relieving you. And then they counted the money and got $750,000, and not a million." Grey responds.
"Let me remind you, an officer was recently convicted of third-degree official misconduct for taking $70 from a crime scene. He's serving two years behind bars. What do you think would happen to a cop who steals a quarter-million dollars?" Anderson pipes up.
"But we didn't take it." Jackson says.
"Uh, maybe the assumption was wrong. Maybe it was always $750,000." Lucy suggests.
"That's not what the intel shows. Guy's on the wire saying it's a million." Anderson responds.
"Okay, well, we can all vouch for each other. I mean -" Lucy starts but is interrupted.
"Not good enough. The only thing that will clear you is passing a polygraph." Grey says.
"Now, I can't, by law, make you take one. It would have to be strictly voluntary." Anderson explains.
"What if we decline?" Jackson asks.
"It's grounds for suspension, pending an investigation, and possibly could lead to your termination." Grey answers.
"Well, that's not much of a choice, but - " Nolan turns to the other three.
"Ana, are you up for that?" Lucy whispers in her ear.
"yeah" Ana says, softly, nodding.
"Okay. Let's go." Anderson says.
"What, now?" Nolan asks, surprised.
"Now." Anderson commands and they filter out of the briefing room and follow Anderson and Grey.
"you got this" Lucy murmurs in Ana's ear and squeezes her hand.
Ana gives her a watery smile in response.
[Timeskip]
Ana goes third, hooked up to a lie detector and with a pad beneath her that senses if she's cheating by clenching her butt.
"Is your full name Ana Cabrera?" Anderson asks.
"Yes, ma'am" Ana replies, softly.
"Do you live at 3280 Savannah road, apartment 32?" Grey asks.
"yes, sir" Ana answers, softly.
"are your eyes brown?" Anderson asks.
"yes, ma'am" Ana replies, softly.
"did you witness anyone take money?" Grey asks.
"no, sir" Ana answers, softly.
"were you ever alone with the money?" Grey asks.
"no, sir" Ana answers, softly.
"you passed your polygraph" Grey tells her.
"But this is far from over. Go home. Detectives will contact you soon about follow-up interviews. We got to find out what happened to that money before you hit the street again." Anderson continues.
"yes, ma'am and sir" Ana says, softly.
Once Ana is done, she stands up and starts to leave.
However, she's pulled into another interrogation room by Bradford.
"alright, I don't think you stole the money but I know something is up, so spill it" Bradford orders.
Ana bites her lip.
"we were talking about the money, you know, what'd we do if we randomly got 1 million dollars. It was innocent at first but then Lucy asked me if I would stay on the job and I just got to thinking about it. My grandparents lived under Castro's Cuba, every family member of theirs is gone except for me a-and yet their only living relative chooses to work a dangerous job and can barely keep the roof above their heads. I just-... I didn't think until now how selfish that was" Ana sniffles.
"Boot" Bradford smirks, rolling his eyes.
"there are many things you are, but selfish? it isn't one of them" Bradford replies.
"w-what?" Ana asks, softly.
"you heard me, you always take the gear in the morning, you let Lucy sit in the front seat, you bought a random stranger lunch the other day because you "felt like it". You are most selfless person I've ever met. You're selfless to a fault and about the job and your grandparents. I believe you told me that you joined the force to prove that not all cops are corrupt, correct?" Bradford says.
"yeah" Ana nods, softly.
"you didn't join because you wanted to, you joined because you wanted to help your grandparents with their own trauma and I already know too much about your grandparents but you want to know what me and Carmen were talking about in the kitchen on Valentines day? Carmen didn't stop for a minute bragging about you, you are your grandparents pride and joy and nothing could change that" Bradford says.
A few tears fall down Ana's face.
"can I have a hug?" Ana sniffles.
"if you don't tell Lucy" Bradford responds before hugging her.
He's the one to drive her home and Ana thanks him constantly on the drive home.
"call me when the detectives show up, okay?" Bradford asks.
"yes, sir, thank you" Ana says, softly, getting out of his truck.
Ana is at home when Lucy manages to find out who stole the cash, turns out it was there before they even got to the house.
Ana is relieved and feels even better when Carmen invites Tim over to dinner. Her grandparents are joking about his height when Ana catches his eye across the table.
"thank you" Ana mouthes.
"for what? doing my job?" Tim mouthes back, making Ana smile and continue to eat her food.
