"100 shifts." Anderson starts.
"Listen, not a lot of rookies make it to this point in their probationary year." Grey continues.
"It's a reason to celebrate." Anderson insists.
"But not too much." Grey adds.
"For your first 100 shifts, your training officers have been there to guide the way. Not today." Grey says.
"Plain Clothes Day." Jackson says, like he's been waiting for this.
"That's right, Officer West. Very good." Anderson says.
"I'm sorry, what is Plain Clothes Day?" Lucy asks.
"Your T.O.s will be out of uniform, riding with you in a strictly observational capacity." Grey explains.
"They will not advise, assist, or help you in any way. Every decision will be yours to make." Anderson says.
Ana raises her hand.
"yes, cupcake?" Anderson asks.
Ana has no idea why, but that specific pet name has been used on her a lot lately, originating with Bradford and now almost every senior officer calls her it. Not that she's complaining, it makes her smile, but she is slightly confused.
"will they talk?" Ana asks, softly. "like if I wanted to know if they wanted water or something, they could respond, right?"
"only you could ask that question, cupcake" Anderson sighs. "yes, for things not related to calls or anything that could help you with your job, they will talk"
"Does this mean I finally get to choose where we eat for lunch?" Nolan asks.
"Yes, Officer Nolan. For all intents and purposes, today you are alone. And that should scare the hell out of you." Grey responds.
"This will be a true measure of where you are in the learning process. And your performance today could have a profound impact on your career path in this department." Anderson explains.
"And for our girls, Bradford will supervise Lucy and I will supervise Ana" Anderson adds.
"So, any questions?" Grey asks.
"Uh, yes, sir. What happens if we get into real trouble?" Lucy asks.
"Deal with it. And if you can't, your T.O. will step in." Grey answers.
"But make no mistake - If that happens, you will be judged. That's it. Good luck out there." Anderson says.

"this sounds really stressful" Ana frowns.
"out of everything, this is what's stressful to you?" Lucy asks.
"well everything else, compared to my childhood, has been a walk in the park, but I'm kinda worried for this one" Ana admits, softly.
"you'll do great." Lucy assures her.
"yeah" Ana nods. "and this is a great opportunity for you to impress Bradford without me around." Ana giggles, wiggling her eyebrows.
"hopefully" Lucy nods.
"you're a badass, you have this in the bag" Ana assures her.
"don't jinx me" Lucy says as they grab the gear from the quartermaster.
Ana knocks on the wood bar for good measure.
"thank you" Lucy laughs as they walk out to the cars.
Anderson is standing by the shop they'll be using. Ana opens up the back and starts to pull things out of the gear bag, laying them in an organized manner in the back of the shop.
Anderson says nothing, just observing as she works. Ana then goes through inspecting the shop like she always does. Ana frowns when one of the tires feels a little deflated.
"sorry, one second" Ana apologizes to Anderson, who doesn't respond, and Ana gets a pump.
She quickly pumps it up and soon they are on their way.
Ana rarely drives the cruiser so it takes some getting used to, since it's not like her old beat up Honda Civic that her grandparents bought used in Louisiana in '08.
[Timeskip]
The day is going pretty well, handled a few domestic disputes, helped a man with his broken down truck, and arrested robbers.
Then they get the call.
"Seven Adam 10 - Domestic Disturbance Call three miles from your location, 1400 Hickory Drive."
"Seven Adam 10 - show us as responding" Ana says, softly, over the radio.
They pull up to a suburban home whose door is swung wide open.
Ana frowns, getting out of the car and hearing arguing from inside the house. Anderson follows behind her, silently. Ana walks up into the house, her gun out. She pauses when she sees a young boy, around seven, sitting in the living room with headphones on. Ana taps him on the shoulder.
"hi, my name is Ana, what's your name?" Ana asks, softly.
"...Will" The seven year old says.
"Will? I love that name, can you do me a teeny favor and wait outside on the front yard near that police car, I'll be right there" Ana promises, softly.
Will agrees, and Ana makes sure he sits down by the shop before pulling her gun out again. The arguing is coming from upstairs but Ana still makes sure to clear the bottom floor of the house before climbing up the stairs.
She clears all of the rooms on the second floor except for the one where yelling is coming from. The door is slightly open and Ana enters.
It's a nursery, Ana realizes.
A baby is crying in the crib while parents are arguing against the wall. There's a little girl, maybe five, who is screaming at her mother.
Her mother, meanwhile, is being choked by the father.
"LAPD, get your hands off of her!" Ana orders, stepping into the room.
The man turns, letting go of the woman and throwing a punch at Ana. Ana easily ducks, but the man is bigger than her and during the resulting fight, he throws Ana into the wall. Ana gets up, and manages to tackle him to the ground and cuff him. Ana starts to read him his Miranda rights when the woman starts screaming.
"Kylie, baby, put the gun down!" The woman yells.
The five year old, Kylie, picked up a gun that her parents must own.
"you hurt him" Kylie yells.
Ana surges forward to take the gun but it's too late. Kylie pulls the trigger, grazing Ana's arm but hitting her mom in the neck. Ana takes the gun and rushes over to the mother but she's already dead.
It's only then that Ana realizes that it's deathly quiet. Anderson is still standing in the doorway, but the baby isn't crying anymore.
Ana stands up, walking over to the crib only to see the infant laying lifeless. Ana reaches down and feels for a pulse but there is none.
"SID" Ana realizes, softly.
Kylie is screaming at her mom's dead body, the father is crying and it's all just a mess.
"S-seven Adam 10, I need backup and RA at 1400 Hickory Drive, shots were fired" Ana says into the radio.
Ana stands in shock for a moment before bending down to Kylie's level.
"Hi, my name is Ana, I'm a police officer and I think your brother, Will, is outside, would you like to wait with him?" Ana asks.
"she hurt him" Kylie whimpers, tears streaming down her face.
"I know she did, honey" Ana murmurs. "come here"
Kylie comes running to Ana's open arms and Ana picks her up with one hand. With the other she hauls the crying handcuffed father. She leads them down to the car, with Will being confused, thankfully, Lucy and Tim are the first to arrive. Tim is rushing over to Anderson while Lucy runs over to Ana.
"what happened?" Lucy asks.
Ana just shakes her head.
"um... two dead bodies, upstairs, in the third door on the right, one infant one adult women" Ana whispers, pushing the man into the back of the cruiser closing the door.
Kylie is still crying and Will is starting to cry to.
"Ana, what the hell just happened?" Lucy repeats.
"I don't-..." Ana shakes her head.
Ana manages to keep herself together through the clean up, the ambulances taking the kids, dead infant, and dead mother away and someone else takes the man to the station to be processed. Ana gives a statement and from what detectives said, none of it was. Ana's fault. Ana still can't get it out of her head. Soon, it's only Anderson and Ana at the house.
Ana turns to look at Anderson, but she just gets a blank look. Ana sighs, getting into the cruiser and Anderson gets into the passenger seat.
The rest of the day is hell, Ana struggles to keep herself from crying or vomiting or maybe both. She manages a few more arrests but they're all misdemeanors and they'll be bailed and be on their way.
Finally, they get back to the station. Ana pulls into the garage, just sitting there for a moment.
"you made one mistake today" Anderson says.
"only one, ma'am?" Ana asks, softly.
"you were thrown into a man three times your size, yet when a paramedic came and asked you if you needed to go the hospital, you said no, despite the fact that you were and are still actively bleeding from the head" Anderson explains.
"I made other mistakes today, ma'am" Ana disagrees, softly.
"I am your superior officer, you want to revise that statement?" Anderson asks.
"yes, ma'am, thank you and I'm sorry" Ana says, softly.
"I'll go to the hospital after shift" Ana murmurs, softly.
"you better, it's a nasty cut" Anderson says before getting out of the car and entering the garage.
Ana sits in the car for a while longer, just staring at the steering wheel. Ana is so in her own head that she doesn't hear Lucy slide into the passenger seat.
"hey" Lucy says. "I read the incident report"
"you should go to the hospital" Lucy adds.
"yeah, I know" Ana says, softly.
"well, come on" Lucy says.
"what?" Ana asks, softly.
"babe, you are in no way shape or form ready to drive anywhere. I'd be surprised if you could walk right now, so come on, I'm driving you to the hospital" Lucy says.
"aren't you celebrating with Jackson and Nolan?" Ana asks, softly.
"they can wait for me for thirty minutes" Lucy responds.
"okay, thank you" Ana says, softly, getting out of the car.
She leans on Lucy as Lucy walks her to her car.
When they arrive at the hospital, there is a sound of a baby crying and Ana looks around, being taken back to earlier that day.
"hey, breathe, 's just an annoying baby crying, that's all" Lucy assures her.
"yeah, yeah, thank you" Ana says, softly.
"hey, we'll always be here for you" Lucy promises.
"we?" Ana asks, softly.
"took you long enough" Tim says, standing up from where he's been waiting.
"thank you" Ana says, softly, giving Tim a weak smile.
"don't thank me, boot" Ana replies, softly.
" 'm gonna do it anyway" Ana murmurs.
"I know you will" Bradford grins. "that's one of the reasons you're still one of my boots, cupcake."
