"My abuela wants you over for dinner again" Ana says, as she and Tim walk to the briefing room.
"why? cause I can put things up on the high shelves?" Tim asks.
"well... yeah" Ana giggles.
"when are we talking?" Tim questions.
"Saturday night?" Ana asks, softly.
"I'll be there, you want me to bring anything?" Tim asks.
"no" Ana shakes her head. "abuela would tear you apart."
They arrive in the briefing room only for Captain Anderson to call them over.
"Can I have your attention?" Anderson calls from a landing outside the briefing room.
"Let's go, Boots." Tim says and they gather around the landing.
"Everyone, gather up. All right, guys, listen up. Internal Affairs will be conducting random integrity tests this week." Anderson announces.
"Reversals." Jackson nods.
"That's right, Officer West." Anderson nods in approval.
"What's a reversal?" Nolan asks.
"Where cops go undercover to rat out other cops." Bradford explains, making Ana frown and she turns to ask him why but Anderson speaks up.
"IA officers will be spending the week pretending to be criminals so they can analyze how we treat them." Anderson corrects.
"So, what Tim said." Angela says.
"Do you think this is a joke, Officer Lopez? Officer Bradford?" Anderson asks.
"No, ma'am." They say at the same time.
"Good. 'Cause I take it very seriously. If you have to change your behavior because of these reversals, we have a problem. My officers do things the right way every day. Is that understood?" Anderson says.
"Yes, ma'am." All of the officers say.
"Dismissed." Anderson responds.
"What if the undercover cops get in the way of an actual call, couldn't that endanger everyone?" Ana asks, softly.
"These guys train for this like the Super Bowl. They know what they're doing, they wouldn't do something like that" Talia answers.
"Are reversals really that hard to spot? I mean, you can usually make a cop by the way they walk." Nolan questions.
"About two years ago, they took over a bank and masqueraded as robbers just to test our response time." Talia recalls
"They cleared the bank out first. Every teller and customer was a plant." Tim adds.
"That's dedicated." Lucy nods.
"wouldn't it be faster to look through our body cam footage?" Ana points out.
"Yes, it's a waste of time and resources, which is why I make it my mission to seek and destroy reversals." Bradford responds.
[Timeskip]
"I'm just saying, cops don't have the best reputation right now. And if these tests help the public trust us, isn't it worth it?" Lucy mentions.
"And how are we supposed to trust each other if our fellow officers are trying to trick us into screwing up?" Bradford points out.
"I ask myself that every day." Lucy responds.
"That's different. I do it to make you a better cop, not betray you." Bradford shakes his head.
They're waiting at a stop sign when a red corvette speeds around the car stopped at the stop sign and runs it. They pull the car over and get out. Bradford and Lucy seem to recognize who it is, but Ana does not.
"You're, uh -" Lucy says, starstruck
"Yes. It's me." Mario Lopez grins.
"License and registration?" Bradford asks, unamused
"Yes, sir. Uh I'm so sorry. I can't believe I did that. I-I've never run a stop sign before." Mario apologizes.
"I watch you on the red carpet. Like, all the time." Lucy gushes.
"It's always nice to meet a fan. Uh, Officer, is there any way you could let me slide on this one, or just let me off with a with a stern warning? It's just that I'm really late right now, and I got a lot of people waiting for me on set." Mario pleads.
"You ran a stop sign. We could arrest you for it." Bradford replies, stone faced.
"Arrest me? Come on. It's - It's a nice, quiet street. There's no harm done. You know, I could get you tickets to any big movie premiere you'd like, or is there a particular star you ever wanted to meet?"
"Okay, sir, bribery of a public officer is in violation of co-" Bradford starts but stops when he sees someone across the street.
"What?" Lucy asks.
"Oh, you gotta be kidding me." Bradford shakes his head before walking over to a grey sedan parked on the curb.
"Murphy." Bradford glares.
"Officer Bradford." Murphy grins.
"Nice touch, roping in a celebrity." Bradford responds, tersely.
"Well, he had community service hours to work off." Murphy shrugs.
"You thought we'd let him go 'cause he's famous?" Bradford asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Had I known it was you, I would've put a strung-out cop behind the wheel. I know you have a soft spot." Murphy responds.
That's when protective Ana mode is activated.
"your job is to see how we treat citizens, not harass us, so why don't you walk that back?" Ana says, stepping in front of Bradford.
"oh, is this one of your little rooks? she's a fireball" Murphy says, looking her up and down.
"Hey, excuse me, does that mean I can go?" Mario Lopez calls.
Bradford walks back over to the Corvette, turning to Lucy.
"Write him up. Reckless driving. Giving false information to a police officer. Disobedience to traffic signs. Unlawful act with a green air sticker. Driving with an obstructed view. Unnecessary use of horn. Failure to exercise caution when passing animals." Bradford lists.
"Wha- Is he serious?!" Mario asks, his jaw dropping.
Once they get back in the shop, Ana can see that Bradford is still fuming.
"um... I know this might be a bad time to ask, but who was the guy in the Corvette?" Ana asks, softly.
[Timeskip]
"7-Adam-19, 459 in progress, 117 Ayers." Dispatch says over the radio.
They arrive at the house and knock on the open door before stepping inside.
"Police! We're coming in!" Lucy calls in.
They go cautiously, going through a plastic curtain where tanks are set up.
"Mushrooms?" Ana guesses, softly.
"Hallucinogens. This is a grow house. Careful - these places are usually booby trapped." Bradford warns.
They find a man on the ground with his leg caught in a bear trap.
"Oh, my God." Lucy says while Ana steps forward.
"See? Booby trapped." Bradford points out.
"Please, just get this thing off of me." The man begs.
"we can't, not yet, you could've severed an artery and you could bleed out if we remove it. We'll get an ambulance to come and check you out" Ana says, softly, kneeling down next to him.
"No, no, no. We don't need to call anybody else. There's like half a million dollars' worth of mushrooms in here. We split it, you pretend you never saw me, everybody wins." The man pleads.
"Okay." Bradford agrees.
"What?!" Lucy and Ana exclaim.
"Really?" The man asks, getting his hopes up.
"Yeah. But I want 60%. So, call Detective Murphy and ask her if that's okay with Internal Affairs." Bradford responds.
"Who?" The man asks.
"Wait, you think this is another reversal? Two in two hours?" Lucy asks.
"That's how they do it. They try and catch you when your guard is down." Bradford answers.
"sir, this looks real" Ana says, softly.
"What are you talking about?" The man asks.
"Look, I've got to say, this is impressive FX work. But we are in Hollywood, so, how'd you do it? Hmm? Metal plates? Peg leg?" Bradford asks.
Bradford kneels down next to Ana and inspects the wound.
"Wait. Wait. What are you doing? What are you doing?!" The man yells.
"Calling your bluff." Bradford responds.
He opens the trap and it bleeds excessively. Ana looks away her face scrunched up while Bradford realizes it's an actual injury and this isn't a reversal. The man is screaming in pain.
"7-Adam-19, we need an RA to 117 Ayers. 30-year-old male, severe trauma to left leg." Lucy says into the radio.
[Timeskip]
"You're lucky his leg's gonna be okay." Lucy says as they walk down the hallway in the station.
"If Murphy hadn't gotten in my head, that never would've happened. Blame the reversals, not me." Bradford excuses.
"What happened?" Ana asks, softly. "you two didn't appear to like each other"
"She investigated me, indirectly" Bradford responds.
"Is it Isabel?" Lucy asks.
"Look, Murphy was her investigating officer." Bradford replies.
"Okay, but you're not Isabel, so what's her beef with you?" Lucy questions.
"Not your concern. Start the paperwork." Bradford orders before walking on.
Ana goes to start the paperwork while Anderson and Lucy talk.
[Timeskip]
Ana is finishing up paperwork when she comes down to see Nolan apparently being threatened by a white supremacist group.
She hears Bradford whine about not getting "greenlit" before him.
"Reversals are dangerous" Ana muses, softly, as she walks away with Bradford.
"they sure as hell are" Bradford responds.
[Timeskip]
Ana spent the night in a van near Nolan's house, monitoring the security cameras set in place. Tim is sitting next to her, they agreed to take two hour shifts. None of the other rookies know that they're doing this, but neither Ana or Tim need recognition for doing their jobs.
"it's been four hours boot" Tim realizes, glancing at his watch when he wakes up.
"hmm?" Ana hums.
"I told you to wake me up after two hours" Tim lectures.
"oh... sorry" Ana says, softly, obviously not guilty
"for that, you're sleeping for the rest of the night" Tim says, pushing Ana to lay down on the little bed in the van.
"but-..." Ana protests but she's shut up with Tim glaring at her.
[Timeskip]
Ana is a little tired the next morning but she perks up after Tim buys her a donut. Soon, they're in roll call.
"All right. Everyone, settle down. Captain." Grey introduces, starting roll call.
"Thank you for coming in, most of you on your day off. Till this is resolved, all overtime limits have been lifted." Anderson promises.
"As you may know, Southern Front originated as a white supremacist prison gang about 15 years ago. Since then, they have branched out in a big way." Grey continues.
"Drugs, prostitution, extortion. But what sets them apart is their access to military weapons." Anderson lists.
"Their leader, the so-called "King Midas," is currently serving three consecutive life sentences. His son, Cole, he controls the day-to-day operations on the street. But make no mistake, his father is pulling the strings." Grey adds.
"Lifting the greenlight would be a huge loss of face for Cole, so he's not gonna do it willingly." Anderson continues.
"So, we gotta make this a business decision. We put a big enough hurt on their operation, they'll lift the greenlight." Grey explains.
Ana looks up as Nolan enters the room.
"Sorry I'm late." Nolan apologizes.
Ana looks back when Bradford stands and gives him a nod of approval while everyone else claps.
"Yesterday, Southern Front tried to kill one of our own. Today, we hit back." Anderson says, dismissing them.
They go out on patrol and soon are bringing a guy into holding.
"I'll handle processing. You two get started on the asset paperwork." Bradford responds.
"I still don't see how confiscating 20 gallons of lube is gonna get the gang to back off Nolan." Lucy frowns.
"Asset forfeiture is where we do the most damage today. Law says we can seize everything and anything connected to their illegal operation. Vehicles, merchandise, even the massage parlor." Bradford explains.
"Well, so, why didn't we hit it last week? Vice knew that Southern Front owned that shop." Lucy asks.
" 'Cause it's whack-a-mole. You take out one criminal enterprise, another one takes its place. Usually not a good use of our time. But today, that's exactly what we want. Make sure Southern Front's scared one of their competitors is about to move in, a -" Bradford stops himself, spotting Murphy and walking over.
"You gotta be kidding me. What the hell are you doing here?" Bradford asks, walking over with Ana quickly following.
"My job. Making sure cops don't break the law." Murphy responds.
"One of our officers was greenlit. Came within seconds of being killed." Bradford answers, angry.
"When do you think that a cop's most likely to cross a line? When they're scared, angry, and want revenge. They might, I don't know, yell at a detective. How about I write you up for conduct unbecoming an officer?" Murphy asks.
"Knock yourself out. This is about Isabel, and you know it." Bradford replies.
"You know, it is about Isabel. It's about the fact that you covered for her for months." Murphy says.
"That's not true." Bradford snarls
"Oh, please. Any cop can tell an addict 10 miles out. You knew she was using, and you let her come to work every day with a loaded gun. You had an obligation to report her, and you didn't." Murphy replies.
"why don't you stop making accusations until you have some solid evidence, yeah?" Ana says, softly, stepping in.
"aw, your fierce little protector" Murphy teases.
"I may be small but I can throw you into that desk if I wanted to" Ana threatens.
Lucy walks over to defuse the situation.
"Hey, can you two help me with the report?" Lucy asks. "I have a-a question"
"Hey" Murphy calls. "If I were you, I'd get another TO"
"yeah, well you're not me, ma'am" Lucy answers before dragging Ana and Bradford away.
[Timeskip]
Bradford and his girls are one of the first to arrive on the scene, seeing Captain Andersen dead by the pool, her head in Nolan's lap.
She's covered in a flag and put on a gurney to be taken to the coronary. Along the way, the officers are standing at salute as she passes.
Ana feels a few tears run down her face as the gurney rolls by.
[Timeskip]
"Look, you need to know that no matter what happens next, whether we arrest this guy or we kill him, it won't make things better." Bradford says, as Lucy and Ana stand next to him.
"we know that." Lucy responds.
"No. You only think you do." Bradford responds.
"Please don't tell me to "use it" - the grief or the anger - to make myself a better cop. I can't handle that right now." Lucy replies.
"I wasn't going to. Okay? Grief is grief. It's - It's a hole that can't be filled, but over time, it'll shrink enough so that you won't fall in every time you take a step. But trust me, if there's one thing you can use to make yourself a better cop, it'll be her life, not her death." Bradford advises.
"One minute" Grey calls.
They manage to arrest him. Ana watches as Bradford spots Murphy and goes over to confront her. Lucy leads her back to the shop and Ana gets inside. They watch as Bradford talks to Murphy before getting into the shop.
"you okay?" Ana asks, softly.
"Yes, for now" Bradford replies.
[Timeskip]
Ana lays down on her bed, having told her grandparents she wasn't hungry.
She knew Captain Anderson for a brief time, she only rode with her once, but she'll remember it. She'll remember the way Anderson assured her that nothing that happened was her fault. She'll remember the way that Anderson didn't push and gave her a perfect evaluation at the end of it.
Ana sits up, taking a picture of her that Tim handed her and putting it onto of her wardrobe. Ana looks up at the picture.
"I won't let you down, ma'am" Ana murmurs, still crying.
It's almost like she can hear Anderson's voice in her ear.
"I know you won't, cupcake."
