"Si no es tu jefe alto o tu nueva amiga, diles que se vayan." Esmerelda says. (If it's not your tall boss or your new friend, tell them to go away.)
All of them awoke to someone knocking on the apartment door at two am.
Ana just got back from an 18 hour shift around 1 am and she's definitely not in the mood for this. She looks like a mess and she's glaring at everything and everyone, unfortunately for Ana, her glare looks like an angry kitten.
"Tim y Lucy trabajaron conmigo el turno de dieciocho horas. Dudo que sea alguno de ellos." Ana responds, softly, as she moves to the apartment door. (Tim and Lucy both just worked the eighteen hour shift with me. I doubt it's either of them.)
"Entonces diles que se vayan." Jose grumbles. (Then tell them to go away.)
Ana ignores her grandparents and opens the front door. A younger man, probably in his 20's, is wearing a suit and holding a piece of paper.
"soliciting isn't allowed in this apartment complex" Ana murmurs, softly.
"you've been served" The man says, handing her the piece of paper before walking away.
"served with what?" Ana groans, looking down at the paper.
[Timeskip]
"Hey. Heard you two are officially cops now. Got hit with your first lawsuit." Angela says as they're walking to the briefing room.
"Oh, it's ridiculous. This guy says I dislocated his shoulder pushing past him in a pursuit. I-I don't think I even touched him. And now he wants fifty thousand to settle." Nolan complains. "what's yours?'
"Imma be honest, I read it when it was delivered to me, I don't remember a single word on that page now" Ana admits, softly.
"give me that" Bradford says, taking the paper from her.
"shit" Bradford curses, looking down at the paper.
"what?" Ana asks, softly, reaching for it.
"when the Veep was rolling through town, we moved some homeless people, homeless person is saying you used excessive force" Bradford answers.
"but we were only there for like ten minutes because we had to take Lucy to the hospital" Ana frowns.
"doesn't matter" Talia says. "it is what it is"
"Don't take it personally. Being sued's part of the job." Bradford says.
"It's why we're required to have liability insurance." Angela adds.
"Ana's lawyer is Freda Colson. Union assign you a lawyer yet?" Bradford asks.
"Yeah. Some guy named Simon Parks." Nolan answers.
"You're lucky. Guy's a legend." Angela says.
"Saved my ass a couple times. He's a cranky old S. O. B., but he gets the job done. You've got nothing to worry about." Bradford says.
They arrive at the roll call room and everyone is staring at the landing outside of it. Ana is just thinking about when Anderson was standing on that landing, talking about reversals.
"What's going on?" Nolan asks.
"IA arrested Jenkins." Talia responds.
Finally, Ana realizes why everyone is staring, seeing the a man in cuffs being walked by two officers.
"The Robbery Homicide detective?" Jackson asks.
"Yeah." Bradford nods.
"do you know why?" Ana asks, softly.
Grey and Commander Percy West enter the room and everyone sits back down.
"All right. Grab a seat." Grey sighs.
"See, look, it's never a good day when one of your own gets arrested. I'm sure you have questions. Commander West from IA is here to answer. Commander?" Grey turns to Percy West.
"Thank you, Sergeant. After an extensive investigation, we found clear evidence that, ten years ago, Detective Jenkins lied on the witness stand. Because of his lies, an innocent woman was convicted of murder in the first." Percy explains.
"She's been in jail this whole time?" Lucy asks.
"Yes. Samantha Bennett. She was released two days ago. In addition to charging Jenkins with perjury, we've placed him on the Brady List." Percy answers.
"Uh, what is the Brady List?" Nolan asks.
"Uh, it's a record of law enforcement officers who've withheld exculpatory evidence." Jackson explains.
"It's a list of dirty cops." Bishop adds, clearing up both Ana and Nolan's confusion because they didn't know what "exculpatory" means.
"IA has reviewed all of Jenkins' past convictions. Of them, three others were deemed suspect enough to warrant the release of those felons." Percy continues.
"But you're not sure those three are innocent." Bradford says.
"No, but their convictions were overturned." Percy responds.
"When this gets out, every lawyer in town is gonna want to get a Jenkins conviction overturned." Angela says.
"That's tomorrow's problem. Today, protocol dictates that we make voluntary contact with these released felons. So, Lopez and West, you will talk to Samantha Bennett. Bradford, Chen, you got Max Kegel, who was doing 25 to life for drug trafficking. And, Bishop and Nolan, take Terry Wright, who was in for armed robbery and attempted murder. If you observe anything actionable, send it up to Major Crimes." Grey assigns.
"And what if we don't see anything actionable?" Talia asks.
"Leave it alone. Observe, report. That's it. All right. Be safe out there." Grey says, dismissing them.

Since Ana's trial is at 11, she finishes up paperwork and runs the front desk. Around 9:30, her lawyer - Freda Colson - shows up.
"hi, I'm looking for an Officer Cabrera" Freda says, looking Ana up and down.
She's elderly and looks like she already doesn't like her.
"oh, that's me, ma'am, it's lovely to meet you" Ana smiles, softly, extending her hand to shake but Freda just looks down at her hand in disgust.
"okay, all you have to do is show up on time and say less" Freda says, making Ana shift a little.
"say less, ma'am?" Ana asks, softly.
"less is more" Freda responds.
Then she walks away. Ana opens her mouth to call after her, having questions but decides not to worry about it.
[Timeskip]
"hey, you meet your lawyer?" Lucy asks, walking over to Ana around ten.
"yeah... I don't think she likes me" Ana says, softly, fiddling with her pen.
"who doesn't like you?" Lucy teases, it's true, Ana has always been a likable person. Her timidness isn't awkward but sweet.
"her" Ana sighs, softly "she came up to me and looked disappointed that I'm her client, then she told me to talk less and just left"
"so she's a bitch?" Lucy asks.
"basically" Ana groans.
"you doing okay?" Lucy asks, seeing how tired Ana looks.
"just tired" Ana responds, softly. "these extra shifts are... a lot"
"you know, you don't have to do them, I only do half of them" Lucy says.
"no, I need to, OT pay is OT pay and the rent in my apartment has doubled, so I need the money" Ana replies, softly.
"oh" Lucy realizes.
"yeah" Ana sighs, softly.
"I'll figure it out, in the meantime, I'm just gonna hope that nothing comes of being sued, because I can not afford to pay this dude 20,000 right now" Ana continues, softly.
"it'll be fine, you know, Tim is an ass but he's saved our lives several times" Lucy brings up.
"I don't think Freda is an ass, I think she's a bitch, there's a difference" Ana replies, softly.
"yeah... you're probably right" Lucy sighs.
"but, you'll do great, I mean, they have your body cam footage and you did amazing that day" Lucy assures her.
Ana says, softly. "what did I do amazing that day? help you?"
"Duh" Lucy responds.
"I think because you are such an overthinker, that you can shut down any other overthinkers brain" Lucy grins.
"I'm glad my overthinking brain can be beneficial" Ana smiles, softly.
"there it is" Lucy says when she sees Ana smile for the first time during this conversation.
"thank you" Ana says, softly. "this'll go fine and if I do have to pay the dude 20,000, then it won't be for at least ten years because I'm in so much debt at the moment."
"to being in debt" Lucy laughs.
"to being in debt" Ana giggles, her mood officially brought up thanks to Lucy.
"oh, guess what, that dude we checked out this morning? apparently he met a woman while in prison. The girl read his case and everything and "fell in love". They just got married when he got out of prison, but then she fed him clams and poisoned him. Turns out that she didn't give two shits about him, she only used him as an excuse to get her mother to back out and when he came back, he was being gross and handsy so she poisoned him" Lucy gushes.
"really?" Ana laughs.
"yeah" Lucy nods.
"wow" Ana sighs, looking up at Lucy and they break into a fit of giggles.
[Timeskip]
Ana is standing in a hallway of the courthouse, desperately dialing Bradford's number.
"what's going on, boot?" Bradford sighs.
"my lawyer, she's also the plaintiff's lawyer" Ana blurts out.
"wait, what?" Bradford asks.
"the judge is her son, he let her be both lawyers" Ana explains.
"so, you're walking into a trap" Bradford realizes.
"yes" Ana says, softly.
"okay... alright, hold on" Bradford says before hanging up.
"break's over, boot" Freda calls and Ana nervously walks back into the room.
Freda doesn't even mention the body cam footage, instead using a statement taken by another homeless man who was obviously inebriated when the statement was made.
"Officer Cabrera?" The judge asks, turning to her.
"I didn't wake him up with excessive force, your honor" Ana insists, softly.
The judge just raises an eyebrow.
"Your honor, you should also consider Officer Cabrera's history" Freda says. Ana looks over, her eyes wide.
"Officer Cabrera wasn't born in the United States, she was born in Cuba" Freda continues.
"I've had citizenship in America for sixteen years" Ana protests, softly.
"nevertheless, you are a second class citizen" Freda responds.
Ana opens her mouth to respond when a man comes rushing into the room. Ana recognizes him as Angela's on and off boyfriend - Wesley Evers.
"your honor, Wesley Ever's, the defendant's lawyer" Wesley says, sitting down.
"I'm her lawyer" Freda protests.
Wesley uses a bunch of law terms that Ana doesn't understand, but she does understand that he just threatened Freda with something major because she doesn't protest any further.
"Mr. Evers?" Ana asks, softly, as he sits down and opens his briefcase.
"call me Wesley, Angela said that you'd been scammed" Wesley replies, opening up his laptop.
He sets the laptop in view of everyone in the room and plays Ana's body camera footage. You can see Ana gently shake him awake and with the audio on, you can hear how soft her voice is while trying to wake him up.
The judge gawks because this new piece of evidence makes the plaintiff's claim baseless.
"um..." The judge says.
"You've been served, your honor" Wesley says, handing a piece of paper to the judge. "for bias while on the stand."
Ana's jaw drops.
"my client has lost four hours of her job to this madness and the union will be suing for pay for my client for those hours lost" Wesley continues.
"now, if you'll excuse us, my client has people to protect" Wesley finishes, gently pulling Ana up and walking her out of the room.
"Mr. Evers..." Ana trails off.
"call me Wesley, kid, and here" Wesley hands her his business card.
"immigrant police officers will always be unfairly treated in court, so when you're sued again, you call me first, understood" Wesley instructs.
Ana looks down at the business card, wordlessly nodding.
"thank you, sir" Ana murmurs, softly, looking back up at him.
"seriously, Wesley" Wesley says. "and see if you can get Angela to actually go out with me at some point."
"will do... Wesley, thank you again" Ana smiles as Wesley walks away.
[Timeskip]
Ana is back on patrol with Bradford and Lucy. She has also thanked Bradford repeatedly for calling Wesley but he repeatedly tells her to shut up and stop thanking him.
"7-Adam-19, assault in progress. Rustic Ranch Paintball." Dispatch says over the radio.
"7-Adam-19, show us responding" Ana says, softly, over the radio.
They get to the paintball place and two guys rush over to them while there is the distant sound of paintball guns.
"Hey, Officer, over here. Over here." One of the men calls.
"he's totally lost his mind" The other guy says.
"who?" Ana asks, softly.
"Jimmy. He lives for paintball, but he takes it way too seriously. Carl snuck up behind him and scored, and then Jimmy freaked out and started attacking -" The second man blurts out.
"Okay. Slow down. Who's Jimmy? Who's Carl?" Bradford asks.
"That's Carl." The second man says, gesturing to a man on a tree stump. Ana winces when she sees a branch lodged in his upper chest. He's somehow conscious but in a world of pain.
"Whoa. Um, did you call an ambulance?" Lucy asks.
"We called them, they're on the way." The second man answers.
"put pressure on it but don't pull it out" Ana instructs, seeing Carl nod.
"Where's this other guy, Jimmy?" Bradford asks.
"Well, he's out there playing somewhere." The man responds.
"How can we ID him?" Bradford questions.
"Uh, he's about 6' tall, he's got a camo jacket, and a skeleton face guard." The man describes.
"All right. You stay here and wait for the ambulance." Bradford instructs.
They walk through a building which is just one large empty room and out the other side, looking for this Jimmy person.
"It's scary what happens when a man focuses on one thing only. It's a cautionary tale, really." Lucy mentions, referring to Bradford and his studying for the Sergeant exam.
"Shut it, Boot." Bradford replies.
"Yes, sir." Lucy responds.
"Man, this would be a whole lot easier if everyone wasn't wearing camo." Lucy says as they walk through the paintball area.
"This job isn't about easy, Boot." Bradford answers.
"Have you ever done this? Played paintball?" Ana asks, softly.
"No. It's amateur hour. I'd straight up murder these guys." Bradford shakes his head.
"Okay." Lucy says.
"That's him, that's him!" One of the men calls.
Bradford gestures to a woman sneaking up behind another man.
"Exhibit A. She thinks approaching from the rear gives her a tactical advantage. But in reality, had she taken the superior position of the high ground to the north –" Bradford pauses, watching as the woman gets paintballed in the back by someone else.
"Oh!" The woman exclaims.
"- that wouldn't have happened." Bradford finishes.
"Oh." Ana and Lucy say at the same time.
"But we know Jimmy's not your average player. This game is his life. So where would he go?" Bradford asks.
"Hmm. Somewhere with a protected view of the course?" Lucy guesses.
Ana looks around, finding a building up high. "high ground" Ana murmurs, pointing up at the building.
They enter the building and Ana is immediately hit with a paintball. It feels like nothing compared to being hit by a bullet, so Ana quickly brushes it off.
"LAPD! Anyone else fires, they're going to jail." Bradford calls.
"Okay. Sorry." One of the men says.
"Guys, guns down." Another man calls.
"Guy in the skeleton mask?" Bradford asks.
"Behind you!" A third man yells
All three cops turn around to see Jimmy sprinting away.
"Jimmy!" Bradford exclaims.
He grabs a paintball rifle and hits Jimmy in the back four time. Jimmy surrenders.
"nice shot, sir" Ana smiles, sharing a look with Lucy who is having the same idea.
[Timeskip]
Bradford, Lucy and Ana are crouched down, getting ready to play a game of paintball.
It took a lot of convincing to get Bradford to agree, but it's all worth it when they both can tell how much he's enjoying this.
You ready, Boots? Remember. No mercy." Bradford says.
"Got it. You're having fun, aren't you?" Lucy grins.
"No. On me. Go!" Bradford says.
Ana and Lucy exchange a look before putting their masks on and following Bradford.
"Incoming!" Another player yells
Let's just say, that they dominate that game of paintball and every other one they will ever play.
