"¡Ana! ¡Acostarse!" Carmen yells when she sees that Ana's bedroom light is on at 2 am. (Ana! Go to bed!)

Carmen is an old woman and naturally gets up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Since there is only one bathroom in the apartment, she has to walk past Ana's room. So when she sees that Ana is still awake, she tries to remedy it.

In response, the light shuts off and Ana stays quiet, trying not to breathe. She creeps back to her desk and turns her desk lamp on. She's studying for her six month exam that is in a week.

"¡Ana!" Carmen exclaims, coming into her room.

"um... I..." Ana tries.

"¡acostarse!" Carmen yells. (Go to bed!)

"si abuela lo siento" Ana says, softly, surrendering. (yes, abuela, sorry)

Carmen huffs and closes the door. Ana waits for Carmen to go back to bed before going back to studying.

"Because you're a rookie, bottom of the food chain. Nothing you think or say matters inside the department. Especially with the Chief of Police, who personally decides Talia's punishment." Jackson says, talking about Talia's punishment.

"Sounds a little harsh." Nolan frowns.

"Harsh as it is, you got to stay focused on yourself right now. We got a six-month exam in the next week, and we got to ace it in order to move on to the next stage of our training." Lucy adds.

"you can still support her, you know, just be there" Ana advises, softly. "she might not want any help but just knowing that you're there could help her. And it doesn't take too much time so you'll still be able to study so we'll move on to the new stage of training"

"Where we'll still be riding with our T.O.s for, what, another seven months?" Nolan points out.

"We get more freedom, though" Ana says, softly.

"And no more daily evaluations." Lucy adds.

"Otherwise, it's back to the starting line, and you're the rookie who got held back. Or worse." Jackson warns. He then slides on mirrored sunglasses, making the other rookies look at him in confusion.

"What's with the glasses?" Lucy asks.

"Uh, I realized I need to start having more fun with the job, stop taking everything so seriously." Jackson says, pointing on a tough expression with the glasses. However, the second Grey walks into the roll call room, the glasses are quickly taken off, making Ana giggle silently.

"All right, listen up. Got some bad news for our rookies. Thanks to Detective Jenkins being placed on the Brady List, the department is tightening the rules regarding the Field Training program. Bottom line: every recruit now has to complete the "training and experience" checklist as a primary officer before they'll be allowed to take the six-month exam." Grey explains.

"does it start with us?" Ana asks, softly.

"starts right now" Grey nods, grimly.

"You got to be kidding. I don't let my rookies be primary until the second month." Bradford says.

"If our recruits experience an event, it shouldn't matter if they were primary. It's not fair to them or us." Angela points out.

"I agree. But this is "cover your ass" time for the department. When the city gets sued, the first thing they look at is the officer training and experience. They've decided that experience can't just be "I was standing there, too."" Grey sighs.

"We can't start this with the next round of recruits?

"The LAPD is a bureaucracy, Officer Bishop. The last thing they care about is a bunch of rookies." Grey responds.

"So, how do we know how many cases we owe?" Lucy asks.

"Putting your listening ears on, Officer Chen, 'cause I'm about to tell you. To complete your checklist, you still needed to be primary on an auto theft, carjacking, ethical dilemma, meth possession, a false I.D., assault on a peace officer, and damage to city property." Grey lists.

"That's like, seven things." Lucy complains.

"Cabrera, you need to be primary on break in, robbery, hostage scenario, ethical dilemma, damage to city property, speeding, and a notable arrest" Grey tells Ana, who writes it down.

"Cabrera has never been in a hostage scenario" Bradford protests.

"Russo put Ana on a list for potential hostage negotiators, so her requirements are higher" Grey explains.

"she didn't sign up to be put on that list" Bradford argues.

"I know she didn't and I've tried to get her name off of it but the department won't budge" Grey answers.

"what's a notable arrest?" Ana asks, softly, having written all of it down.

"a cold case arrest, we've done one, but I think I had Chen lead it" Bradford answers.

"one of the many problems with having two rookies" Grey sighs.

"What about us?" Angela asks.

"Officer West needs a high-risk crowd control, meth possession, and a carjacking." Grey responds.

"Piece of cake, boss." Jackson says, before quickly correcting himself "I mean "Sir.""

"I'm afraid to ask." Nolan says.

"So, Officer Nolan, the number of items you need on your checklist are zero. You might want to thank your training officer for making you primary starting day one. And, since we are ripping off the Band-Aid, here's the rest of the bad news. HR needs proof of completion by end of shift tomorrow. Otherwise, the recruits are extended in the program." Grey explains.

"Meaning we fall behind." Lucy realizes.

"Sir, there's no way we can control what "experiences" they'll get in the next two days." Bradford protests.

"Understood. Look, I know this is a tall order. But I believe in you. I've notified dispatch of the calls that are needed. They will funnel them to your shops if and when when they come in. That's it. All right? Good luck. Be safe out there. Officer Nolan, since you're free and clear, go see Detective Wolfe. He has a job for you and Bishop." Grey finishes.

"Yes, sir." Nolan nods.

"Nolan did a hostage negotiation" Ana muses, softly, staring down at the list.

"hey, it'll be fine, we'll figure it out" Lucy assures her.

[Timeskip]

"He's clean." Lucy sighs.

"I'm really sorry." Fred apologizes, knowing that they were relying on him.

"You're always carrying, Fred. What happened?" Bradford asks.

"Oh, uh - Got my 30-day chip." Fred explains, holding up a 30-day Narcotics Anonymous chip.

"that's amazing" Ana smiles, softly.

"Wow. Congratulations." Bradford chuckles

"I feel bad I let you down." Fred frowns.

"It's all good. It's all good. Say hi to Wilma for me." Bradford says.

"All right." Fred smiles.

"You're free to go." Bradford tells Fred and he walks away.

"You said he was a sure checkmark for drug possession." Lucy sighs.

"What can I say? He got clean. It's inspiring, actually." Bradford replies.

"Well, forgive me if I don't appreciate the human-interest story. I mean, Jackson at least has a chance with only three calls, but seven?" Lucy huffs.

"yours aren't as bad as Ana's, we're going to knock yours out first and then turn to Ana's rarer ones" Bradford says. "Plus, people win the lottery every day, and with higher odds against them. There are 18 million people in the Greater Los Angeles area. We just need seven of them to break very specific laws."

"7-19, store owner reporting customer trying to pass counterfeit bills near your location. Hispanic male, brown hair, blue suit." Dispatch says over the radio.

"7-Adam-19, responding." Bradford says over the radio.

"I-I don't need a counterfeiting case." Lucy points out.

"Look at the bright side. You do need assaulting an officer. Maybe he'll take a swing at you. And who knows, we may get a hostage negotiation out of it" Bradford says, saying the last bit to Ana who has already resigned herself to not being able to take the six months.

[Timeskip]

They're at lunch, standing by one of the food trucks.

"I still need seven calls. You know how many I needed when we started this morning? Seven." Lucy complains.

"at least we're in the same boat" Ana says, softly, resting her chin on Lucy's shoulder.

"If it makes you feel any better, I only got one." Jackson replies

"It doesn't." Lucy and Ana say at the same time.

"Look. You're gonna be fine. Yes, you are in the suck right now. You just have to bear down and get through it. And as motivation, I booked us a spa day the day after we take the exam." Nolan says.

"I've got all the motivation I need, I just need the opportunity" Ana replies, softly.

"Well, easy for you to think about spa days. You've got all your boxes checked." Lucy adds.

"Okay, look, I hate to play the age card." Nolan starts.

Ana and Lucy both raise an eyebrow, knowing that Nolan loves to play the age card.

"It's the only card I have. But one of the things you learn as you get older is perspective. I cannot tell you how many times in my 20s I thought I was going under for good. I was married, with a young kid. I had credit card debts up to my eyeballs. It was bad. But we survived. We figured out a way to just keep moving forward." Nolan replies.

"that's been my life since 14. Moving to the next stage means a pay bump, which means I can finally pay for my abuela's hip replacement" Ana huffs.

"I forgot to ask about that, how is she doing?" Lucy asks.

"she's fine, still somehow manages to have sex, so that's fun" Ana responds.

"Surviving isn't the same as succeeding." Lucy says, turning to Nolan.

"No, it's not, but in two days, we're going to be on the other side of this. And odds are, we're going to be sitting down taking this test together." Nolan replies.

"All units, we have a 215 in progress. Carjacking, Beverly Drive at Oakwood." Dispatch says over the radio.

"that's you" Ana realizes, grabbing Lucy's hand and starting to run to the car.

"7-Adam-19, show us responding." They hear Bradford say over the radio as he catches up to them.

[Timeskip]

They arrive at the same time where a crowd has formed. Ana helps clear the crowd while the others rush to get to the man.

Lucy and Jackson get there first and see Ben, beaten up and bleeding on the pavement.

"Ben? Oh, my God." Lucy gasps.

[Timeskip]

It's pouring down raining outside as they cruise through a neighborhood known for stolen cars. Ana is soaking wet in the back seat, but she managed to check off break in and robbery in one fell swoop earlier, so she's down to five.

"Every license plate I run is coming up clear. There's no way I make this deadline." Lucy sighs as she checks every license plate over the computer.

"Not with that attitude." Bradford responds.

"hey, we'll make it" Ana assures hers, softly. "I promise"

"We're almost at the end of shift. I haven't checked a single box all day." Lucy groans.

"Look, a buddy of mine at 77th said there's been more stolen cars in this one neighborhood in the last month than all of Mid-Wilshire last year." Bradford says.

"I hope so." Lucy replies.

They stop behind a sedan and Lucy checks the plate. This time, the computer finds a record.

"Those plates don't match that car." Lucy realizes,

"And that's how you find a rollin' stolen. Light 'em up, Boot." Bradford grins.

Lucy sounds the siren briefly, then gets out to speak to the driver. It's a woman and she looks upset. Ana gets out along with Bradford and stays off to the side.

"we're going to figure yours out too, I know that they're rarer, but we'll make the deadline" Bradford promises as they watch Lucy talk to the woman in the car.

"I'm more worried about Lucy, sir" Ana replies, softly. "I know it'd kill her if we don't make this deadline."

"we'll make the deadline" Bradford insists.

"I can't do this. She's just trying to get by." Lucy says, walking back to Ana and Bradford.

"Case like this, it's your call. You can cite her for the false plates and check a box or cut her loose and risk not being able to take the final exam." Bradford replies.

"I don't want to be that cop. This whole thing is pissing me off. I-It's just I don't want to do it this way running around trying to tick off boxes. It's not me." Lucy replies.

"then give her a warning" Ana says, softly.

They watch Lucy go back to the sedan and give the woman a warning before returning back to them.

"So, wanna know the good news? This counts as an ethical dilemma. Which means you have checked a box." Bradford says.

"Only six more to go." Lucy says.

[Timeskip | Roll Call]

"Chen, you still need six. Cabrera, you need five. West, you've got one. And, Nolan, front desk duty. All right, that's it. Be safe out there." Grey announces before dismissing them.

Bradford grabs both Ana and Lucy's wrists and drags them through the crowd, in a rush to get both of them on patrol.

"Make a hole, make a hole. Coming through." Bradford says as he barrels through the departing crowd.

"I should just throw in the towel. There's no way we're gonna check six boxes in one day. We should focus on Ana, she only has five" Lucy groans.

"no, we're both checking off all of the boxes or we're both not. If you throw in the towel, I am too" Ana says, softly.

"I'm not training quitters, boots. We fight until the bell rings. There's no other way." Bradford says.

"7-Adam-19, you still need a destruction of city property?" Dispatch asks.

"Roger that." Bradford says over the radio.

"911 just got a call. Two blocks over from Wilshire and Pine. Single car accident while driving on the sidewalk." Dispatch says over the radio.

"What'd I tell you? We're still in this." Bradford says.

"7-Adam-19, show us responding." Bradford says over the radio.

[Timeskip]

"wait, we both need it" Lucy says, stopping.

Ana runs into her back.

"what do you mean?" Ana asks, softly.

"we both need damage to city property" Lucy replies, turning around.

"you can take it" Ana says, softly.

"no" Lucy shakes her head.

"Lucy, take it. I'm down to five, you have six, you take this one" Ana insists.

"fine" Lucy agrees.

They arrive at the scene where someone has run an SUV into a fire hydrant. A woman is weaving around on the sidewalk near the damaged car. She appears more impaired than injured.

"Control, 7-Adam-07, can you run plate 5-Paul-Charlie-Ida-410? Ma'am, were you driving this vehicle?" Lucy asks, coming over.

"Yeah. No." The woman (Heather) lies.

"destruction of city property" Ana murmurs, softly, to Lucy.

"That's one more box checked." Lucy says.

"5-Paul-Charlie-Ida-410 just reported 10-8-51. RP says girlfriend took his car without permission 20 minutes ago." Dispatch says over the radio.

"That bastard!" Heather curses.

"And grand theft auto brings your total to three. It's your lucky day, Boot." Bradford says.

"halfway there" Ana squeals.

"Hey - Hey! Stop! - Oh!" Lucy calls when Heather grabs a scooter and tries to get away, only to run into a pole.

"And that's technically a carjacking. Thing has a motor. It counts." Bradford grins..

"Ma'am, do not attempt to run away again. What's your name?" Lucy asks, coming over to the woman.

"Alexander Hamilton." Heather says, sarcastically.

"False I.D. to an officer brings us to five. I'm gonna need to see your driver's license, please." Lucy counts.

Heather pushes the scooter towards them and it hits Ana, though it doesn't hurt.

"Assault on a police officer. That's six." Lucy grins.

Heather tries to run away again but trips over a sidewalk sign.

"Ooh! Not bad, Officer Chen. Go get her." Bradford calls.

"looks like we've only got five left" Bradford grins turning to Ana, who nods.

She's worried about her own still left, but she's really happy for Lucy for checking off most of her list in one call.

[Timeskip]

They try for the rest of the day and Ana ends up getting her speeding and damage to city property in one as well.

Someone ran a red light and ended up crashing into the stop light.

Ana still has three while Lucy has one. Ana needs a hostage situation, notable arrest, and ethical dilemma while Lucy needs a meth possession.

By the end of the day, Ana has given up on herself but she hasn't given up on Lucy.

"hey, what are you doing?" Ana asks, softly.

"the day's over" Lucy sighs.

"the day isn't over until we say it's over, come on, we can clock in overtime" Ana insists.

Bradford meets them at the car.

"Grey approved the overtime, let's go" Bradford encourages.

[Timeskip]

They get the call from dispatch and arrive to see a man stumbling around, obviously high.

Just as they're getting out of the car, dispatch comes over the radio "Seven Adam 19, hostage situation at 5th National Bank with cold case criminal"

Lucy and Bradford freeze.

"what?" Ana asks, softly, getting out of the car.

"those are yours" Lucy says.

"but we're about to get your last one" Ana says, softly.

"we'll do yours really quickly and then we'll go to the hostage situation" Bradford decides.

They approach the man and arrest him, however, down the street they see a man mugging a woman. Ana doesn't hesitate to go over and arrest that man too.

"are we going to make it?" Lucy asks as Bradford speeds to the 5th National Bank.

"we're going to make it" Bradford says, determined.

When they arrive, a swarm of police cars are already there and they see the cold case criminal being escorted a police car.

"damnit" Bradford curses, hitting the steering wheel.

"we're going 'till midnight" Bradford says.

"it's 11:30" Ana murmurs, softly, looking at the clock. "we should go home"

"no, we're not quitting." Lucy argues.

[Timeskip]

Ana enters her apartment around 12:30 am. No one else is awake. Ana sniffles and goes to her room, looking at all of the study materials.

She bites back a sob before packing up all of the study materials.

"it's okay" Ana whispers to herself, her tears getting on the study materials. "it'll be fine, w-we'll just be b-behind, it'll be okay"

Despite her quiet assurances, Ana sinks to the ground, curling into a ball and starting to sob.

She's going to be held back.
