"No. No. No. Ya hemos hablado de esto al menos una docena de veces. Lo más cercano a una mascota que compraré es una planta." Ana says as she gets ready for work. (No. No. No. We've talked about this at least a dozen times already. The closest thing to a pet I'll buy is a plant.)

Jose and Mario have teamed up on her to get a dog.

"Por favor cariño. ¿De verdad vas a dejar solos a tus pobres abuelos traumatizados y sin ningún tipo de compañía?" Mario begs, attempting to guilt trip her. (Please, honey. Are you really going to leave your poor traumatized grandparents alone without any companion?

"Ciertamente parecías tener un compañero anoche." Ana responds to Mario. (You certainly seemed to have a companion last night.)

"ella te atrapó." Jose laughs, giving Ana a high five. (she got you)

"Lo siento, abuelo. Pero apenas pude comprar todos tus medicamentos la semana pasada, definitivamente no puedo permitirme una mascota." Ana says, softly, walking into the living room. (I'm sorry, grandpa. But I could barely buy all your medications last week, I definitely can't afford a pet.)

"¿Estás luchando con el dinero, mija?" Carmen asks. (Are you struggling with money, darling?)

"Está bien, abuela. Me has cuidado toda mi vida, déjame cuidar de ti. No te preocupes por el dinero ni nada. El único estrés en tu mente debería ser lo que estás desayunando." Ana assures her abuela, kissing her cheek as she walks to the door and puts on her shoes. (It's fine, abuela. You've taken care of me my whole life, let me take care of you. Don't worry about money or anything. The only stress on your mind should be what you're having for breakfast.)

"pero-" Carmen says. (but-)

"No, sin peros. Salvaste mi vida y me adoptaste cuando hubiera sido huérfana. Yo soy la que trabaja. Soy yo quien debe preocuparse por el dinero." Ana says, softly. (Nope, no buts. You saved my life and adopted me when I would've been an orphan. I'm the one working. I'm the one who shall worry about money.)

"Está bien, cariño, siempre y cuando estés a salvo." Carmen concedes. (okay, darling, as long as you stay safe.)

"Lo haré, ahora tengo que ponerme a trabajar, los veré a todos alrededor de las seis de la noche." Ana promises, before grabbing her keys and leaving the apartment.

[Timeskip - 8 AM | Roll Call]

"Everyone have a seat. Today is a special day for our rookies. 'Cause today we switch things up. That's right. Everybody gets a new training officer. Nolan and Cabrera, you'll be riding with Officer Lopez. West, you'll be riding with Officer Bradford. And Chen, you'll be with Bishop. But learning how to navigate a new T.O. is not your only challenge. By the end of next shift, I expect every rookie to uncover something personal about their training officer, something they don't want you to know. This will be a test of your investigative instincts and your fortitude. Best insight will win a day off. Worst one handles Saturday night cavity searches. That's it. Good luck."

Ana stands up, she's familiar with Angela, not so much with Nolan. She's a little disappointed that she was paired with another rookie again, but she'll survive.

She heads outside, grabbing gear and not listening to the rookies conversation or the TO's conversation. She puts the gear in the back of the shop, automatically getting into the back of the shop.

Officer Lopez is the next one in the car and she turns to say something to Ana but Nolan comes around to the driver side and talks to Angela.

"Oh. Uh, usually Officer Bishop has me drive. She feels it's a better way to evaluate how I -" Nolan starts.

"This is my shop. I drive." Angela responds, shortly.

"Copy that, so..." Nolan trails off.

"I was raised by a single mom. Everything I own was a hand-me-down from my four brothers, so I care about what I wear and how I look. Now you don't have to spend the next two days hunting for insight." Angela says.

Ana's eyes widen but given the look that Angela sends her way, that won't be the piece of insight that Ana will use.

"I don't think that's how Sergeant Grey wanted me to gain insight." Nolan frowns.

"Are you a teacher's pet, Boot? 'Cause I thought I was gonna get a change of pace with you." Angela asks, already looking annoyed.

"Uh, no, ma'am. Just looking to get the most out of the experience." Nolan responds.

"Good. Because if I win you Grey's day off, you're gonna fix my garage door. I heard you were a contractor." Angela replies.

And it's in that moment that Ana officially sees Angela Lopez as a badass and looks up to her.

"Yeah, no, happy to help. Probably gonna need a little more than "She likes nice clothes" to win this thing" Nolan says as he gets into the passenger seat. "so where are we off to?"

"Court. I have to testify in a trial. Should take a few hours" Angela responds, glancing at Nolan.

"quiet time starts now"

Ana stays quiet in the backseat with a newfound admiration for Angela as she backs out of the garage and starts to drive to the courthouse.

"Never been to the courthouse before. This is exciting." Nolan says as they enter the courthouse.

"What court case are you testifying in, ma'am?" Ana asks, softly and curiously.

"That feeling will pass. Caught this break and enter 10 months ago. Since then, it's been two preliminary hearings, two motions to suppress. It's endless." Angela replies and Ana nods, jotting that down in her notebook.

"Hey, Lopez. Looking good." A man says, walking by.

"Thanks. How's your wife?" Lopez says in passing before turning back to her two rookies.

"This is the only place in L.A. where you can find all the law enforcement agencies together. LAPD, Highway Patrol, Sheriff's Department, everyone acting like the top of the food chain. See that guy with the comb-over? They call him Hot Stuff. Know why?" Lopez gestures to a guy.

"he's a hotshot?" Ana guesses, softly.

"'Cause he somehow managed to get sriracha in his eyes while he was driving. Ended up in Echo Park Lake." Angela laughs.

"oh" Ana mouths, smiling a little cause it is funny.

"Oh, and that's Officer Davis. She collects American Girl dolls and uses them to recreate scenes from 50 Shades. She's single, if you're wondering." Angela gestures and Ana stifles a giggle at the look Angela sends Nolan.

"Thank you. How do you know all this?" Nolan asks.

"Ah, well, if you want to keep secrets, don't work in law enforcement." Angela smirks.

Ana mentally notes that, telling anyone means telling everyone, so anything you want to keep a secret, you keep to yourself.

Angela lets Ana sit in on the court hearing, because she's curious. Ana and Angela's radios goes off when Nolan calls for help because a prisoner escaped.

Nolan ends up losing the subject and they meet him on the front steps of the courthouse.

"Sorry. I tried to catch the guy." Nolan says as they approach.

"Well, now we got to find him. Fugitive's name is Nestor Garcia. He's a mid-level drug dealer looking at 10 to 20 if he's convicted. Residence is in Boyle Heights. I volunteered us to check it out." Angela says, before her eyes fall to Nolan's rook book.

"Leave that in the locker next time." Angela instructs.

"Officer Bishop suggested-..." Nolan starts.

"Do I look like Officer Bishop?" Angela asks.

"No" Nolan responds.

"Grey switched it up so you guys get a different perspective. Mine is you do your homework at home." Angela says.

Soon they pull up to the house in Boyle Heights. As they walk up to the house, Nolan starts to talk again.

"Do you, uh, date cops? I'm not asking - I mean, just trying to get some insight. You know, that, um, CHP officer at the courthouse was hitting on you." Nolan asks.

"It's not worth it. That guy can run around racking up trophies, but I date one cop, and I get a rep, so I fish in other pools." Angela responds.

"what do you mean by that, ma'am?" Ana asks, softly.

Angela turns around. "you're what, 5'1''?" Angela asks, looking Ana up and down.

"4'11''"Ana replies.

"alright, shortstack, one thing you should know that Bradford can't teach you, is that boys can run around dating cops and no one will say anything, but a girl? the second you date another cop you're accused of sleeping your way up the chain of command." Angela says, turning around to look at Ana.

"okay, thank you" Ana replies, while Nolan looks a little uncomfortable.

"Nestor Garcia, police. Come out." Angela knocks, but there is no answer.

"What if we were to talk to the local merchants?" Nolan says, nodding to a kid selling lemonade on the sidewalk next door.

"Alright" Angela agrees and Ana follows them as they walk to the lemonade stand.

"hey bud, how much for three cups?" Ana asks, softly, smiling down at the kid.

She's always been good with children... and pets, which her abuelos love to tell her in hopes that they'll get them a dog.

"one dollar each" The kid grins. "hmm" Ana hums, pulling out her wallet. "you're robbing me blind here kid"

Instead of three one dollar bills, she hands him a twenty. "keep the change" Ana says, softly, grinning when the kid lights up at the money.

"hey, do you know anything about your neighbor next door?" Ana asks the kid, softly, kicking Nolan in the shin when he mentions how thick the lemonade is.

"Sure. The dad's a drug dealer. My mom gets really talky when she has Chardonnay." The kid says rather bluntly.

"yeah? have you seen him around today?" Ana asks.

"No, he's probably at the thing" The kid replies.

"what thing?" Angela asks.

"Buy some more lemonade and I'll tell you." The kid grins.

"Are you trying to extort a law enforcement officer?" Angela raises an eyebrow.

"No, it's basic supply and demand. I have something you need, so I can set the price." The kid responds.

"okay, you know what, how about you give me another five for friends of mine" Ana decides, softly, handing him two twenties at this point.

"his daughters birthday party" The kid says.

"robbing me blind" Ana grumbles, seeing that she's spent all of her lunch money as they get into the cruiser.

They arrive at the ballroom where the quinceañera is being held.

They watch as Nestor Garcia leads a young woman wearing a dress to the center of the ballroom.

"There he is. What's the party for again?" Nolan asks.

"His daughter's quinceañera. - 15th birthday." Angela replies.

"Oh, sorry. We don't get a lot of those in rural Pennsylvania. It's fun." Nolan says as they watch the father and daughter start to dance.

"Aww. He escaped custody to share a dance with his daughter. That's kind of sweet." Nolan smiles.

"It's selfish, 'cause now her memory of this is gonna be us arresting him in front of her entire family. He did it for himself, not her." Angela replies, coldly.

"That never occurred to me" Nolan responds.

"your dad died" Ana realizes, softly, on Angela's other side.

"what?" Angela asks, turning to Ana.

"The look on your face... my dad died too..," Ana says, softly.

"He went MIA, brought back a stuffed animal and left several times, then he got cancer" Angela explains while Ana nods.

"So do we let them finish the dance?" Nolan asks.

"Of course. I'm not a monster" Angela replies.

Once they arrest the man, they go to the food trucks.

"So, uh, did you have a quinceañera?" Nolan asks.

"Of course, and I looked good." Angela smirks and Ana smiles.

"Who did you dance with? 'Cause you said single mom." Nolan asks, curiously.

"My abuelo. - Her dad." Angela responds.

"oh" Nolan says.

Ana hesitates for a second, not sure if she should share her own story but Angela glances at her and she gets the confidence to talk.

"um... I'm sorry for being so abrupt earlier, I just-... I know that face you made because I had it too... I was eleven and-..." Ana is interrupted when Bradford yells Angela's name.

"Lopez!" Bradford calls, walking over.

"Give us a minute." Angela says. Ana is immediately standing up and walking away while Nolan hesitates.

"Why? What's going on?" Nolan asks.

"Just do it." Angela orders.

Nolan and Ana find a bench a little bit aways.

"so your dad?" Nolan prompts.

"oh, right, um... I was eleven" Ana starts, staring ahead and not at Nolan. "we lived in a very poor neighborhood in Havana, Cuba. I would go with my papa every day to sell tortillas that my mama and abuelas made. We were walking there when policemen started firing at someone who was protesting against the corrupt Cuban government. My papa recognized the protestor and tried to calm down the policemen, in response, the policemen shot my dad seventeen times."

"wow" Nolan breathes.

"is that why you're a cop?" Nolan asks.

"I'm a cop because I want to prove to my grandparents that not all policemen are evil, that the police can be good" Ana explains, softly.

"Do your grandparents still live in Cuba?" Nolan asks.

"no, we escaped Cuba on a boat when I was 14. We counted as refugees because the police had been targeting us since they killed my papa. we got citizenship in American and I got a scholarship to UCLA, so we moved to Los Angeles. They live in my apartment with me" Ana explains, softly.

Ana glances at Nolan, who is looking up at Jackson. Nolan sends her an apologetic look before walking over to Jackson. They're too far away for Ana to hear them. Instead Ana sends a quick text to her grandparents and waits patiently.

The next day, they're walking to the garage when they're told to go to Captain Anderson's office.

"Lopez, Nolan. Cabrera" Anderson says.

"You wanted to see us?" Angela says.

"The quinceañera felon you picked up yesterday, Nestor Garcia? He's requested to speak with you three" Anderson responds.

"why?" Angela asks.

"A.D.A. thinks it's connected to a plea deal he's trying to cut. She's bringing him in from the courthouse now. You let me know how it goes." Anderson says, dismissing them.

"yes, ma'am" Ana says, softly and following Nolan and Angela out of her office.

Soon, they're in the interrogation room opposite of Garcia.

"I want to thank you for yesterday. That dance meant a lot to my daughter, and the fact that you let me finish, that means a lot to me. So, to reward you, I have a gift. A drug deal is going down this afternoon large shipment, the kind of bust that'll get you noticed." Garcia says.

"And you're just giving us this because we were nice to you?" Angela asks, suspiciously.

"No, I'm doing this to reduce my sentence. But I'm giving it to you because you were nice to me. So, you'd better hurry up, call the D.A. to make a deal, because the exchange is going down in two hours." Garcia says.

[Timeskip - N/A Time - Briefing]

Ana is sitting on a table in the roll call room, though now they're going over the information they have on the drug bust.

"Okay, according to Garcia, the exchange is going down at Stoneson Home Supply on Sunset." Grey says.

"They're gonna make a drug deal in the parking lot in broad daylight?" Lucy questions.

"Box stores are the perfect cover. Busy parking lots, multiple exits. They hide in the chaos." Bradford responds. Ana makes sure to note that down.

"At 1500 hours, a car loaded with 80 kilos of cocaine driven up from Mexico will land in the parking lot. The driver will walk away. A runner for the buyer will climb behind the wheel and drive off. The whole thing takes 90 seconds." Grey maps out with Ana noting down the information.

"According to Nestor, the shipment is in a red Civic with Nevada plates." Angela says.

"Now, the parking lot only has two access points, here and here. Officer Bradford, you'll be parked out of sight over there. Officer Bishop, you'll have all eyes on this exit here." Grey says.

"Cabrera?" Grey asks, making Ana look up.

"yeah?" Ana asks. Grey looks her up and down, sizing her up for something.

"you'll fit in an XS?" Grey asks.

"um... yes, sir?" Ana responds, softly, still confused.

"No." Angela says, when she realizes where Grey is going.

"No." Bradford supports when he reaches the same conclusion that Angela does.

"You'll fit in some clothes in evidence, you're gonna go to go undercover for this" Grey decides, ignoring both Angela and Bradford's protests.

"as who, sir?" Ana asks, softly.

"just a customer at the Box store, so you can be close in case something goes south." Grey says.

"Grey, no" Angela says.

"You trust her?" Grey asks.

"well... yes, but still..." Angela responds. "she's been a rookie for less than two weeks and has already been shot on duty" Bradford points out.

"do you trust her?" Grey turns to Bradford.

"of course I trust her, she saved my life" Bradford replies.

"then you trust her to make the decision." Grey responds. "Officer Cabrera?"

Ana only takes a minute to answer. "I'll do it, sir"

"And what about us, Sergeant? What's our position?" Nolan asks.

"We need to know exactly when the car lands, so we need eyes on the whole parking lot. You will be with me here." Grey answers.

[Timeskip - 1500 - Box Store]

Ana is dressed in old dirty clothes, a pair of grey jeans, a dirty blue shirt and a red plaid shirt tied around her waist. She's wearing a trucker hat and pretending to be a customer at the store.

It all goes to shit quickly and soon Ana has her gun out and is in a shooting match. She manages to pin one of the shooters down and cuff him, though she gets a few broken ribs for her efforts.

Ana sighs as she pulls the man up, looking back to see both Angela and Bradford looking at her. Ana looks back at them. Angela grins and Bradford gives a small nod of approval.

Ana bites back a smile, before her attention is turned back to putting the man in the shop.

[Timeskip - Evening - Home]

Ana missed the end of roll call because she went to the hospital to get her ribs checked out. They treated them and she'll just be sore for the next few days.

Ana sighs, unlocking her apartment door and entering. Immediately, all of her grandparents create a barrier to hide something or someone . Ana sighs, dropping a huge bag of dog food on the ground.

"I get to name the damn thing" Ana says as she kicks off her shoes and her grandparents celebrate.
