Ana is in the back of the patrol car, with Lucy driving for the first time.

"Look out!" Bradford yells, but it's too late because the car flips onto it's head and slides down the sidewalk.

There is a small awkward silence as they all just hang there upside down before Bradford asks "that worked out the way you planned it, boot?"

[Timeskip - 8 AM | Roll Call]

"I've never seen him like that. He's usually so confident, so self-assured, so -" Nolan is talking about a teacher at the Academy, Hawke.

Hawke never really liked Ana, she's not sure why but she always got that impression.

"arrogant" Talia finishes, obviously not liking Hawke.

"You know he's living in a motel now?" Nolan says, more concerned about Hawke than anyone else in the room.

"That's what happens when you try to be big policeman at home. You end up on the couch. Tim rode with Hawke back in the day." Talia answers.

Ana glances back at Tim, knowing that that could not have gone well.

"Damn straight. Craziest six months of my life" Tim says, entering the roll call room, meeting Ana's eyes as he talks.

Ana turns back around to look at Talia.

"Hmm. Nolan hung out with him last night." Talia says.

"Hawke and Nolan?" Tim asks, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, yeah. They were tight at the Academy. They bonded over their shared love of old stuff." Lucy pipes up.

"The Beastie Boys isn't old" Nolan frowns.

"They formed before I was born." Lucy says making Ana giggle.

They've definitely gotten closer since that whole Roundup game. Lucy is over almost every night and Ana's grandparents love to embarrass Ana in front of Lucy. Ana hasn't had friends since she was in diapers, but she thinks she can call Lucy her friend.

"All right, everyone take a seat. Got some catching up to do. Let's go. First, let's congratulate Officer Chen for allowing her T.O. to finish his coffee before rolling their vehicle." Grey says, entering the roll call room. People applaud and laugh.

"I see "training" is working out for you. All right, more pressingly, midnight shift was flooded with calls last night, and they left us with their mess. Let's get started. Our detectives are working a homicide in Larchmont Village, but there are witnesses that still need to be interviewed. Bishop and Nolan, you'll take that. And Burglary has got a search warrant that Patrol didn't get around to. Bradford, Cabrera and Chen, you'll take that." Grey says, dishing out the assignments for the day.

"Come on, why can't Burglary serve their own damn warrants?" Bradford complains.

"Because they don't have the vim and vigor you have, Officer Bradford. This is yours. All the faces. Don't worry. I have pending calls for everybody! All right, let's go knock 'em out and show the late shift how real police work is done." Grey announces, dismissing them.

[Timeskip - N/A - Patrol]

"All right, we're serving a search warrant. You see door hinges?" Bradford quizzes, looking back at Ana.

"the door opens outwards towards us" Ana answers, softly.

"and what's a "fatal funnel"?" Bradford asks, turning to Lucy.

"the first three feet in any doorway" Lucy replies.

"Not bad. Here's the real test. Of all the things Burglary told us about our suspect LeShawn Halvorsen, what's most important?" Bradford asks.

"His history of fighting with police?" Ana guesses, softly.

"Nope. Chen?" Bradford asks.

"He's been served seven search warrants and spent a good chunk of time on parole, so he knows how to hide stuff" Lucy answers. Ana gives Lucy a high five hidden from Bradford.

"For this, you'll need to search like crooks, do you think you can do that?" Bradford asks the two girls.

"yes, sir" Ana replies, softly.

"of course, you don't think I can?" Lucy questions.

"I think you were raised to analyze bad guys, not be one, and to be a great cop, you got to have a little outlaw in you. Hinges?" Bradford says as they arrive at the door.

"on the inside" Ana says, softly.

Bradford draws his weapon and Ana and Lucy follow suit. He bangs on the door of apartment 501.

"Police. Open up, LeShawn." Bradford yells into the apartment.

"What's an acceptable amount of time to wait before we bust in?" Lucy questions.

Her question is answered when Bradford kicks the door in, knocking out LeShawn who was hit by the swinging door.

"That had to hurt" Bradford smirks.

Bradford steps over LeShawn and ties him to a chair while Lucy and Ana start to search the house.

Lucy is bending down to look under the table.

"yo, lady cop, you can search my house all day" LeShawn says, admiring Lucy's ass.

Both Ana and Bradford get pissed quickly, but Bradford handles it.

"Get up. Face the wall before I snatch the other eye out of your head. You need to learn some respect." Bradford growls, pinning the man to the wall.

"Okay, come on, Officer Chen. Think like a crook. When's the last time you hid anything under a couch, 8th grade?" Bradford says, his voice softening a little as he looks at Lucy.

"You know how many times I couldn't find my phone and it was under the couch the whole time?" Lucy points out.

"This isn't that. You ever heard of the D-E-A-R method?" Bradford asks.

"D. E. A. R. Deception, when one thing is actually something else" Ana starts, softly, having learned the DEAR method at some point at the Academy.

"alright, boot, come hold our asshole hear" Bradford says, turning to Ana.

Ana obeys, holding the man against the wall while Bradford walks over to the fridge and opens it. He taps the cap and it reveals an empty hidden compartment.

"what's next, boot?" Bradford asks.

"Elusive, when nothing is actually something" Ana replies, softly.

Bradford reaches up and pulls off a vent cover, finding an empty canister inside.

"Access, things that are hard to reach" Ana continues, softly.

Bradford reaches up and unscrews a lightbulb taking a wad of cash out of it.

"and R, boot?" Bradford asks.

"Repulsive, sir. Anything that is gross and disgusting where no one wants to look" Ana finishes, softly.

"You've got to be kidding me." Lucy groans.

"Might want to glove up. Saw a box of sex toys in the master bedroom, and don't forget the toilet. Search before you flush." Bradford smirks.

"Wait. Uh, why do I have to be "R"? I don't I don't want to be "R." I could be "elusive" or "deceptive" or something." Lucy protests, but puts on some gloves.

Ana is quickly given the same task and soon they're searching through LeShawn's more disgusting areas of his house.

Ana is searching through his trash in his master bedroom, disgusted by the amount of used condoms.

At least he's using protection, Ana muses to herself.

Lucy leaves the master bedroom, walking into the living room.

"What the hell?" Lucy asks, making Ana stand up and also walk into the living area.

Bradford is sitting at the table, looking smug, with a bunch of stolen items on the table.

"What?" Bradford asks.

"I've been back there for 20 minutes digging through Caligula's toy chest, and you've had this the whole time?" Lucy scoffs.

"Well, not the whole time. It took me three or four minutes." Bradford smirks.

"Mm." Lucy hums, unamused.

"You find anything?" Bradford ask.

"yeah, horrid filthy things" Lucy shivers, gagging.

This Hawke character appears again and now he's being accused of assault and battery against his wife. They drive up to an RV parked on a curb, an RV which was at the motel when Hawke sped off.

"Dispatch pinged his phone. Shows his location as 10 yards in front of us. 7-Adam-19, show us Code 6 at Riverside and Woodman. No sign of suspect Hawke's vehicle. Check Utah plate 6-Mary-Ocean-1-7-Adam." Ana says, softly, into her radio as they get out of the car.

"I can't believe we're hunting Jeremy Hawke. Man bleeds LAPD. I was first on scene when the guy was taking .223 rounds using the curb for cover." Bradford says as they all get out of the car.

The RV door is open.

"Hawke? It's Tim. We're gonna get to the bottom of this. Come out. Let's talk." Bradford calls, not getting too close to the RV door.

An older man emerges from the camper, definitely not Hawke.

"Hey. Sorry. No Hawke here. We met back at the motel, though. Did he do something wrong?" The man says.

"Was he ever inside your vehicle?" Bradford asks, approaching the RV.

"Nope." The man responds.

Ana watches as Bradford opens the front hood and finds a cell phone with Hawke's wife as the lockscreen.

"He really is running. He knew we'd track his cell, so he planted it on someone going anywhere he's not." Bradford says.

"He's thinking like a criminal." Lucy realizes.

"Worse, like a criminal cop. He knows how we do things and what we expect, so he's always a step ahead." Bradford says, grimly.

[Timeskip]

"7-Adam-19, we are on intercept course with Hawke's truck, three blocks out and closing." Bradford says over the radio.

"is this safe with Hawke's kid in the car?" Lucy asks while Ana is getting the medical kit ready in the back.

"Hawke thinks we've fallen back into tracking mode. He doesn't know we blocked the streets, turned the lights green to funnel him towards us. He won't see the roadblock coming. To him, it looks like we've fallen back." Bradford responds.

"Yeah, but won't all the green lights look suspicious?" Lucy questions.

"He won't notice. "What appears to be nothing," remember?" Bradford answers.

"You're DEAR method incarnate. You've got a tactic for any situation, don't you?" Lucy asks.

"Maybe" Bradford responds.

"What if you get robbed at gunpoint?" Lucy quizzes.

"Easy, deception. I carry an empty wallet. If I ever got robbed, I'd drop my fake, pull my piece, and good night, nurse." Bradford answers, obviously having already thought of this.

"do you spend your free time going through every scenario in your head?" Ana giggles.

"Please, boot, you're the biggest overthinker I know" Bradford teases back, making Ana smile.

"So, where do you keep your cards and money?" Lucy asks.

"Money clip behind my belt." Bradford responds.

"Okay, you're officially weird" Lucy decides.

They approach the truck that Hawke is driving.

"Get ready. It's going down." Bradford says

"7-Adam-19, about to intercept. Make sure you block him in." Bradford says over the radio.

"7-Adam-15, copy. He just did a hard left turn. It's like he knows what we're gonna do." Nolan says over the radio.

"The SOB must still have his radio." Bradford realizes.

Ana's eyebrows furrow, not knowing what SOB means but deciding that now is not the time to ask.

"Hawke, I know you can hear me. You need to pull over right now. Hawke?" Nolan says over the radio.

"I'm not good at calling it quits, Nolan. You know that. A lot of boys at Pelican Bay can attest to that." Hawke says over the radio.

"So, what, you gonna join them?" Nolan asks over the radio.

"That is never going to happen" Hawke says over the radio.

"What's your end game here, Hawke? You just gonna escape the pursuit and live happily ever after?" Nolan says over the radio.

"Didn't you learn anything in class, Nolan? This is a tactical situation, not a strategic one. Long term isn't about the conversation. The initial obstacle is the pursuit. Once I lose that, just focus on the next step." Hawke responds over the radio.

"What about Logan? Are you prepared for something to happen to him?" Nolan asks over the radio.

"Leave my son out of this." Hawke growls over the radio.

Lucy and Ana exchange a look in the rear view mirror, neither know that Hawke would do this, despite Hawke not liking Ana at the academy.

"Don't use me against my dad! He said you'd try that and that you'd lie about everything. But it won't work. We're in this together. Whatever happens to him, happens to me." A kid's voice comes over the radio, presumably Logan.

"I'm not lying, Logan. Your father is. He's lost control." Nolan says over the radio.

"You're done" Hawke says over the radio.

"Logan? Hawke?" Nolan calls over the radio.

Ana looks down at her phone, seeing that Talia is calling her.

Ana answers it and puts it on speaker, holding it out so Bradford and Lucy can hear her.

"What's his plan?" Bradford asks over the phone.

"We were just trying to figure that out. How would you get away?" Talia replies.

"Job number one would be to lose air support. No way to escape the eye in the sky. What about you?" Bradford answers.

"Go somewhere packed with people. Overwhelm our resources. Switch cars." Talia answers.

"you guys are so smart" Ana murmurs.

"Does every cop have an escape route?" Lucy asks.

"Most." Bishop replies.

"Hawke and I worked a car one summer. We were a two-man wrecking crew. Took down some heavy hitters. We talked about how we'd run from the cops because it made us better hunters." Bradford says.

"Covered parking, tons of people. He's going to the mall." Nolan says over the phone when he sees a sign for the mall.

"We need to get him now." Bishop says.

"Suspect headed for the Fair Street Mall. Need additional units. Code 3." Bradford says over the radio.

Ana and Lucy run with Bradford into the mall, they find Nolan and Bishop in a shop, uncuffing Logan who is angry.

Bradford tries the back door but it won't budge.

"Where does this door lead?" Talia asks, turning to the security guard.

"Interior hallway. From there you can go anywhere in the mall, places the public can't access." The security guard responds.

Grey comes over and they huddle up to discuss what to do.

"Make sure it's secure." Bradford is saying as Grey runs over.

"Time element since we had a visual?" Grey asks.

"four minutes, sir" Ana replies, glancing at her watch.

"Perimeter?" Grey asks.

"Thin, but we have units moving in at every exit. We'll have full containment in a few minutes." Talia answers.

"If I were him, I'd head back to the parking garage and just steal a car, get lost in the stream heading out." Lucy says.

"I'd change clothes, pull the fire alarm, blend in with the fleeing crowd." Talia responds.

"Sewer system. That's the way to go. Dogs can't track him, good current, be in Chinatown in 15 minutes." Bradford adds.

"All units, be advised, man with a gun at Lowington Financial. Code 3." Dispatch says over the radio.

"That's six blocks from here" Ana realizes, softly.

Thanks to Tim's first "Tim Test", both Ana and Lucy have been working on memorizing the entire city of LA.

"Description of the gunman?" Grey asks over the radio.

"No, sir. 911 call cut off before we could get more information." Dispatch says over the radio.

"That's how I'd do it. Call in a false report. Pulls manpower away, divides our resources, it frees up an exit. That call's not real. That's Hawke." Nolan responds.

"And if it's not? If the call's real and we don't divert units over immediately, what happens then?" Grey asks.

"7-Adam-14, 7-Adam-25, respond to active shooter at Lowington Financial." Dispatch says over the radio.

Ana isn't paying attention, hidden in the shadows of a loading bay while Hawke walks through it, only to be stopped by Nolan.

"It's over, Hawke" Bradford says, pointing his gun at Hawke's back.

"Unh-unh." Hawke says.

"You know the drill. Slide the gun over here. Get on the ground." Nolan orders.

"That's not gonna happen. You already made a mistake. There's no clear line of fire in here. You want to shoot me? You could shoot him, but I'll tell you something. That - Ah, ah, ah." Hawke says, pulling out a gun and pointing it at Nolan. "but that doesn't concern me"

"Easy, Boot. He's not gonna shoot you. He's trying suicide by cop." Bradford says.

"How many times did we run this scenario in the Academy? What do you always say about guys who go down like this? That they're cowards." Nolan says.

"That's how cops are gonna talk about you." Bradford adds.

"You want me to go down without a fight? Huh?" Hawke asks.

"Nobody is saying that" Bradford replies.

"I was." Nolan says.

"Oh! Oh, this this is this is gonna be good." Hawke smirks, putting down his gun.

"Huh? Oh, this is gonna be good, gentlemen. Not really a fair fight, but it's gonna be good because I trained both of you, one in the field, one in the classroom, and I know your strengths, and I know your weaknesses." Hawke says.

Bradford whistles the signal and Ana puts her gun away and tackles Hawke to the ground. She's fast enough and quick enough to disorient Hawke enough for her to cuff him.

[Timeskip]

Ana gets a call around 10:30 pm. Ana answers it, seeing that it's Bradford.

"you get to drive the shop for the next week" Bradford says over the phone, sounding mad.

"what?" Ana asks but he's already hung up. Ana looks down at her phone before deciding it's not worth the trouble and continues studying her rook book.
