Ana comes back the next day, feeling a little guilty. It seems that while she was worried about systemic racism, Nolan's home was broken into and Isabel was shot in the head.
But she's here, she's here to help people and to save people and to hopefully make up for being absent yesterday. During roll call, it's all about what happened with Isabel.
"So, according to Carson, Vance is most likely located at a warehouse facility in South Gate at this address. All right, Detectives Wolfe and Vestri will stake it out with patrol units from that division, while you guys will head over to Bronson Estates, where Carson says Vance's girlfriend, Cesiah Olivo, lives." Grey instructs with Ana taking notes.
"But Carson doesn't know which apartment she lives in, so we'll have to do some knocking on doors." Wolfe adds.
"All right, listen up. This has the potential of being a very dangerous operation. Vance is a heavy hitter. He has a well-armed crew. So he won't go down easy. All right, watch each other's backs out there, and be careful." Grey says, dismissing them.
Ana stands up, going over to Lucy and Bradford, both of whom are looking shaken up.
"Hey. I'm so sorry about Isabel" Lucy apologizes.
"do you need anything?" Ana asks, softly.
"Yeah. Thanks. Go kit up our shop. Ask Mike for the Bradford Special." Bradford responds.
"what's that?" Lucy asks.
"you'll see" Bradford replies.
Ana and Lucy exchange a look before starting to walk down to the quartermaster shop.
"hey, is something wrong?" Ana asks, softly, on the way.
Lucy turns to look at her.
"I was with Nolan last night" Lucy blurts out.
"what?" Ana asks, softly, confused.
"last night, I dropped him off at his house and we kissed and had sex and then his house was broken into and I was there" Lucy confesses. "I left before the cops could arrive so no one would know, because it was just the heat of the moment but now Nolan has to lie about it and I already lied saying I wasn't in a relationship with him and I just-..."
"hey, hey, slow down and just breathe" Ana instructs, softly, putting her hands on Lucy's shoulders.
"listen, I'm sure that Nolan is fine with lying for you and second, no one is going to find out. It's an innocent white lie that will save you from a world of trouble" Ana assures, softly. "all you have to do is keep up the lie. This will all blow over and by next week you'll have forgotten this even happened"
"are you sure?" Lucy asks.
"I'm not a liar, Lucy" Ana promises, softly.
Lucy hugs her and Ana hugs her back.
"thank you" Lucy murmurs.
"of course, now let's go find out what the Bradford special is" Ana says, managing a small smile out of Lucy, so Ana will take it.
[Timeskip - Bronson Estates]
"Let's gear up. Got your backup piece?" Tim turns to both of them as they get out of the cruiser.
"yes, sir" Ana says, softly, and he hands her a piece of metal and gives one to Lucy too.
"what's this?" Lucy asks.
"Trauma plate for your vest. Little extra protection." Tim explains, putting Ana's on so Lucy can see where it goes.
"Oh. Bradford Special. You really think we're gonna need this?" Lucy asks.
"You know why they call this place the Bronson Estates?" Tim asks.
"because someone named Bronson built them?" Ana guesses, softly.
"No. Back when you were in short pants, there was a movie called "Death Wish." Starred Charles Bronson." Angela replies.
"Yeah. For a long time, responding to a call here meant that you had a death wish." Talia adds.
"oh" Ana says, softly, understanding now. "thank you"
"But it's better now, right?" Jackson asks.
"It's no longer the wild, wild west. Lots of low-income families live here. But it never hurts to be cautious." Angela replies.
"boot, get the big boy rifle" Bradford instructs.
Ana obeys, returning with the rifle that is half her size. Bradford chuckles taking it from her.
"thanks, shortstack" Bradford smiles.
"hey, that's what I call her, get your own nickname for her" Angela teases.
"She's my boot, I can call her whatever I want" Bradford responds.
"What's that? A little extra shock and awe?" Angela asks, turning her attention to the rifle.
"Damn straight" Bradford replies.
"We're here to talk to people, not scare the hell out of them." Talia says.
"Speak for yourself" Bradford responds, but gets looks.
"Alright" Bradford resigns, putting the rifle back in the trunk.
"Let's do this. This'll go faster if we split up." Bradford says.
"You all right riding solo?" Bradford asks Talia.
"Have you met me?" Talia responds.
"Okay. My boots and I will start on three. You take two. Jackson and Lopez will ground floor it. Stay in constant radio contact." Bradford orders.
They walk over to the apartment door and Bradford opens it.
"what a gentleman" Angela teases.
[Timeskip]
It's not going too well at the Bronson Estates. After being yelled in the face for the fifth time, the door is slammed shut.
"people really like us" Ana says, softly and sarcastically.
It's Bradford's turn knocking on the door.
"Who's there?" A woman calls from inside.
"Gas company" Bradford responds.
The woman - Cesiah Olivo - opens the door and moves to close it but Bradford stops her and steps inside, with Ana and Lucy following behind him.
"Cesiah Olivo. Just the woman we're looking for." Bradford says.
"Marcus isn't here" Cesiah says.
"Yeah. We're gonna need to be sure." Bradford replies.
"Hey, you can't-" Cesiah is interrupted.
"Sit." Bradford commands while Ana and Lucy start to search the apartment.
"Clear" Ana calls as she checks the kitchen.
"Clear" Lucy calls when she checks the living room.
"When's the last time you heard from Vance?" Bradford asks.
"Yesterday. He was supposed to come over last night. He never showed up." Cesiah responds.
"You know who he is? What he does for a living?" Lucy asks.
"Yeah" Cesiah answers.
"And you're okay with that?" Lucy questions.
"No. But I was pregnant by the time I found out. And he made me move in here so his guys can keep an eye on me. Make sure I don't go anywhere." Cesiah explains.
"So you're a prisoner?" Ana asks, softly.
"No. But he had a son who died in a car accident. He needs to make sure nothing happens to our baby." Cesiah answers.
"You want out, we can get you out" Bradford offers.
"Only if I give him up. Forget it." Cesiah answers.
"If we-" Bradford starts but Lucy interrupts him.
"Cesiah, do you really want a guy like that taking care of your child? There's no guarantee that he'll keep you around after this baby is born." Lucy says.
"All you have to do is call him. Say you're not feeling well. You're worried about the baby." Ana encourages, softly.
"I can't" Cesiah shakes her head.
"It's one call. We get him out of your life for good, make sure you and the baby are safe." Bradford says.
"You promise?" Cesiah scoffs.
"He hurt someone I care about. He's going away forever." Bradford promises, his voice deadly.
Ana and Lucy exchange a look, wondering how good it is for Tim to be looking for Isabel's shooter.
Cesiah calls Vance and he promises to get there soon. However, soon there is the sound of gunshots below them.
"7-Adam-19. Shots fired at Bronson Estates." Bradford says over the radio.
There is just static. "Control, respond" Bradford says over the radio.
"Marcus has a frequency jammer in the basement. One of his guys brought it back from Iraq." Cesiah says.
"No signal" Lucy sighs.
Ana's hand goes to her gun holster when she hears more gunshots from below.
Cesiah starts packing things for the baby.
"We don't have time for packing. We gotta go." Bradford insists.
"Hush" Lucy says.
"I need things for the baby. I can't leave here without them." Cesiah insists.
"When are you due?" Ana asks, softly, walking over and helping her put things into a bag.
"A week ago." Cesiah answers. Ana's eyes widen and she moves faster at helping Cesiah pack.
"Vance" Bradford says, looking through the peephole.
"your boyfriend is here" Bradford calls to Cesiah.
Ana stands up, finishing packing and putting the bag on her shoulder and moving Cesiah behind her and drawing her gun.
There is a knock at the door before they can hear Vance call from the other side of the door. "To the police officers inside, I'm here for Cesiah. She walks out, you walk away. Otherwise, we're gonna come in and take her."
"No, you're not. 'Cause you can't risk her getting hit in the crossfire. You give up, we'll make sure she goes to the hospital when the baby comes." Bradford replies.
"Forget it. I'm not leaving here without my kid." Vance calls.
"Then I guess we're at a stalemate" Bradford says.
"what are you doing?" Lucy asks.
"I bought us a little time, but they're coming through that door soon enough. And I'm not sure we can stop them" Bradford replies.
"we'll get you and the baby somewhere safe" Ana promises Cesiah, who is shaking.
Cesiah grips her arm.
"you okay?" Ana asks, softly.
"a contraction" Cesiah responds, wincing.
"okay, let's sit you down, yeah?" Ana says, softly. "how big was it?"
"Really big one" Cesiah answers.
"How long until somebody knows we're missing?" Lucy asks as Ana has Cesiah hit down on a chair.
"It might be a while. We're on special assignment here. They don't expect us to check in regularly." Bradford replies, trying to look the peephole.
"They blocked the peephole." Bradford says.
"what? so we're blind?" Lucy asks.
"No, we're not. Find me some tape." Bradford replies.
"do you have any tape?" Ana asks, softly.
"Front, front. Just -" Cesiah waves to a drawer. Ana goes to the drawer and throws the tape to Bradford.
"okay, okay, breathe with me, okay?" Ana says, softly, taking Cesiah's hand and putting it on her heart.
"Give me your body cam. Put tape right here. There's a body-cam app on your city-issued phone. Open it. They're getting ready to come in. Help me barricade the door." Bradford instructs Lucy.
Ana looks up when he says to barricade the door.
"Ana?" Cesiah says.
Ana turns back to look at Cesiah.
"yeah?" Ana asks, softly.
"my water just broke" Cesiah says.
"um... oh" Ana says, softly.
"l-let's get you standing okay?" Ana asks, softly, helping Cesiah stand.
"whatever happens, you and the baby are going to be safe and we're going to get you to a hospital" Ana promises, softly.
"What are we gonna do? If they break through the door, we're gonna get overrun." Lucy says.
"Gotta get to them first. Okay." Bradford responds.
Using his makeshift camera, he fires through the wall and door at the men in the hallway. Cesiah screams and Ana rubs Cesiah's back with one hand and with the other she grips her gun.
"breathe, breathe" Ana repeats, softly.
"Stop, stop! You're gonna hit Cesiah!" Vance yells.
"Hold it! Hold it!" One of his men yells.
"Get 'em out of here." Vance orders.
"All right, go, go, go, go. Go." One of the men says.
"Should we move her to a different room?" Ana asks, softly.
"No. Looks like we're clear for now." Bradford responds.
"I need to go to the hospital. The baby's coming." Cesiah says.
Ana glances at Bradford.
"my cousin gave birth in a hut in Havana, I was there, I know how to give a home birth" Ana says, softly.
Bradford raises an eyebrow.
"did the baby survive?" Lucy asks, softly.
"uh..." Ana hesitates. "no, because my aunt injected my cousin with pain meds with a dirty needle"
"what?" Cesiah asks.
"yeah... I had a pretty fucked up childhood, but I promise you your baby will be perfectly fine" Ana assures hers, softly.
"let's get you laying down" Ana says, softly, laying Cesiah down on the couch.
Ana gets some towels and scissors.
"ssh, ssh, miel, it's okay, just breathe for me" Ana instructs, softly, as Cesiah is now well into labor.
"I assume this is another test." Lucy says.
"They don't stop just 'cause we're pinned down. And let's face it, you'd think less of me if they did." Bradford responds.
"Yes. Okay." Lucy nods.
"How's it going over there, shortstack?" Bradford calls over to Ana.
"Head is coming through first, so that's good, but the baby is *big*" Ana replies.
Cesiah is screaming in pain while Ana urges the baby out. It's less of Cesiah pushing and more of Ana pulling, as gently as she can. The baby comes through and Ana cuts the umbilical cord.
" 's a girl" Ana says, softly, wrapping the baby girl in a towel and handing her to Cesiah.
"good job, shortstack" Bradford nods in approval.
"what's wrong?" Lucy asks, seeing that Bradford looks off.
"Something's not right." Bradford replies.
There's a sound of crashing. Ana is covered in birth fluids and her hand slips as she pulls out her gun but she still manages, pointing it at the other room.
"Look out!" Bradford yells.
A man comes out and shoots Lucy in her trauma plate. Lucy falls over, semi-conscious. Meanwhile Vance walks over to the couch. Ana fires at him but another man tackles her. Ana hears Cesiah screaming and her ears are ringing. Lucy pulls the man off of her and manages to cuff him. Ana starts to run after Vance who flees but he throws back a smoke bomb that hits her in the neck. Ana falls to the ground, choking a little and inhaling the smoke.
Vance escapes.
Bradford comes over to her first, and helps her remember how to breathe.
"you get Cesiah and the baby, I'll get shortstack here and the two men, I think it might've done something to her neck" Bradford calls to Lucy, easily scooping Ana up with one arm and grabbing the two cuffed men with the other.
"damn, shortstack, you're light" Bradford comments.
He brings her down to an ambulance and she's diagnosed with throat contusion. It's treatable and she'll just need to go to the hospital.
She's one of the first to go to the hospital, soon followed by Cesiah and her baby.
Ana goes home that night, her voice is a little weak and she'll have a nasty bruise but otherwise she's fine.
As she's leaving the hospital, she spots Bradford and Isabel talking. She frowns and catches Isabel's eye.
Ana just shakes her head and walks away, unnoticed by Bradford.
She doesn't see the guilty expression on Isabel's face.
