"what does love feel like?" Dominique asks as the sun sets.
The stars have yet to appear in the sky. They took a nap out in the sun with Ana standing guard a while ago but she woke them up after two hours so they could all get in the car the second the North Star appears in the sky.
"it's..." Ana trails off, looking in the backseat to see Davion stretched out, fast asleep, with Jack asleep on his chest.
"it's like..." Ana sighs, turning back to look out the windshield. "It's like whenever you see them your body immediately relaxes"
"your mind slows down until it's not overthinking anymore" Ana says, softly.
"your heart... your heart feels at home with them" Ana continues, softly.
"when you look at them, you can imagine your entire life with them and the image makes you happy" Ana adds, softly.
"falling in love is when-... when everything is falling apart around you but they are there, the calm in the storm" Ana remarks, softly.
"falling in love is when the very idea of something hurting them breaks you in half" Ana murmurs, softly.
"falling in love is when you feel most fulfilled when you're able to support them and love them during difficult times" Ana finishes, softly.
"that's beautiful" Dominique nods.
"it's scary too" Ana responds, softly. "it's like you're falling and you can only hope that they'll catch you"
"will he?" Dominique inquires.
"I don't know" Ana murmurs. "that's what's scary."
"he's a simp for you, you know that?" Dominique promises.
"people say that a lot" Ana giggles. "I'm not really sure what it means"
"it means he spoils you rotten" Dominique laughs.
"he does" Ana agrees, nodding.
"what do you think he's doing right now?" Dominique muses.
"probably searching for us, there's probably a city wide manhunt" Ana says, softly. "two kids of cops kidnapped by a fire loving serial killer? The news is gonna have a field day"
"my dad's probably freaking out" Dominique remarks.
Ana nods. "I'm freaking out. Jack has medicine he needs to take and your legs are quite literally broken, if we don't get you to a hospital, your legs could heal wrong"
"that just made me freak out" Dominique frowns.
"sorry, I'm gonna get you to a hospital in time" Ana promises, softly.
"I trust you" Dominique nods.
"thank you" Ana gives her a weak smile.
"you're-..." Dominique trails off. "you're so sweet yet so badass, it's weird"
"you think I'm a badass?" Ana giggles.
"hell yeah" Dominique nods.
"thank you" Ana smiles.
"is that the North Star?" Dominique asks, pointing up at the stars starting to appear.
"I think so, yeah" Ana nods. "so if that's north, then we need to go west"
"why west?" Dominique inquires.
"to hit the Pacific, I don't know if we're north or south or east of Los Angeles, but I do know if we keep going west we'll hit the Pacific and go from there" Ana answers.
"so you really don't know where we are?" Dominique asks.
"I'm gonna get you home, I promise" Ana promises, as she starts to drive the Jeep to the west.
"you can't promise that" Dominique frowns.
"I'm a badass, remember?" Ana reminds her.
[Time Skip]
"what's that?" Dominique asks as they arrive on the beach, but there is one person standing in the sand, seemingly waiting for them.
"wait here" Ana tells her, climbing out of the car.
"hi, my name's Ana, do you have any idea which direction LA is?" Ana requests as she approaches the woman.
"I know who you are Officer Cabrera" The woman smirks.
"who are you?" Ana asks, gripping the keys, her only weapon.
"we'll get to that bit later, but for now, let's talk about your trust" The woman says, starting to approach her.
"what?" Ana questions.
"oh, honey, you trust too easily, do you really think Davion just so easily changed his mind?" The woman asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Davion?" Ana inquires, turning around to see Davion behind her, a gun pointed at Jack's head. "w-what are you doing?"
"It's pathetic, honestly, no wonder why all of your friends have to constantly protect you" The woman continues, walking towards Ana.
"put down the gun" Ana insists, not paying any attention to the woman.
"oh, you poor thing, you just don't understand how the world works" The woman coos, putting her hand on Ana's arm.
"this baby could be killed as a teenager just because of his skin tone" Davion insists.
"he won't" Ana shakes her head.
"and how do you know, cop?" The woman spits out.
"some cops are bad, yes, but there are so many good cops" Ana insists.
"one piece of mold ruins the entire loaf of bread" The woman sings.
"so your plan is to rid the world of police?" Ana asks.
"no, my plan is to find the most vulnerable people of each police department and hold them hostage, making the entire department bend to my will" The woman replies.
"they won't. protecting the city matters more than one cop's life" Ana shakes her head.
"Are you sure about that?" The woman inquires, pulling out her phone and showing a video.
It's of Angela, pleading with who looks to be one of the woman's workers to just give her Ana and Jack back and she'll do anything.
"I won't let them" Ana decides, softly.
"you still think you're in control, you still think you have power" The woman scoffs.
She kicks Ana in the stomach and forces her on her knees. "you are powerless.
"why?" Ana whispers. "why?"
"my husband was just going to the grocery store and then he was going to come back and we were going to make a baby, but he never came back, because of you damned cops" The woman hisses, slapping Ana.
Ana isn't fighting back because Davion still has a gun to Jack's head. The woman takes out all of her anger on Ana, beating her to a pulp. Ana at some point can't stay kneeling and falls to the ground, weak and her body burning in pain.
The woman kicks her once more and Ana throws up a little bit of blood. She's barely conscious as she hears Dominique and Jack being forced back into the Jeep.
"no" Ana whispers, weakly, when she watches the Jeep drive away.

He was wearing his favorite shirt. A plaid one that his mother had splurged on when he was a teenager. He barely fits in it, but he wears it almost every day despite the holes and tears collecting on the garment.
She was wearing a skirt and a dirty white shirt they found in the dumpster, probably owned by a rich person before being thrown away.
"El oro de un hombre es el tesoro de otro" Ana remembers her father saying that when he first gave her the skirt. (One man's gold is another man's treasure.)
"Sólo una canasta más, papá." Eleven year old Ana exclaims, leaving the little hut where her entire family lives with one more basket of tortillas. (just one more basket, dad).
"Más despacio, mija, que no tenemos prisa." Her father laughs as Ana puts the last basket in the wagon. (Slow down, darling, we're in no rush)
"¿Qué hay de malo en llegar temprano, papá?" Ana asks, skipping along with her father as they begin the three mile journey to the market. (what's the harm in getting there early, papa?)
"No hay daño, mija, pero tampoco hay beneficio." Her father responds. (there's no harm, darling, but there's no benefit either.)
"Entonces, ¿cuál es el beneficio de tomarnos nuestro tiempo?" Ana inquires, curiously. (then what's the benefit in taking our time?)
"podemos contemplar el maravilloso hogar que Dios nos ha dado." Her father replies. (we can look at the wonderful home God has given us.)
"Papá, vivimos en una cabaña de una sola habitación y tenemos que caminar al mercado todos los días, ¿qué te parece maravilloso?" Ana questions, her eyebrows furrowed. (dad, we live in a one room hut and have to walk to market every day, what about that is wonderful?)
"es maravilloso porque te tengo a ti, a tus hermanos, a tu mamá, a tus abuelos, a tus tías, tíos y primos. La familia lo es todo, mija, nunca lo olvides, ¿vale?" Her father explains. (it's wonderful because I have you and your siblings and your mom and your grandparents and your aunts and uncles and cousins. Family is everything, darling, never forget that, okay?)
"está bien, papá" Ana nods, understanding what her father is saying.
"¡Por favor, por favor, no dispares!" They hear a man yelling down the road. (Please, please, don't shoot!)
"quédate aquí, mija" Her father orders, starting to walk over to the man. (stay here, darling).
"papa" Ana calls after him.
Her father walks over to the man only for a terrible noise to echo through the air. Ana covers her ears, crouching down at the sound of gunshots.
"papa!" Ana exclaims once the noise has gone away and she sees her dad on the ground.
She rushes over to him, kneeling down next to him.
"¡papá! ¡papá! Por favor, necesitamos conseguirte ayuda, levántate, papá." Ana insists, trying to pull her shot father up. (dad! dad! please, we need to get you help, stand up, dad.)
"Mija, mija, cuida a nuestro familia, ¿sí?" Her father pleads, his trembling hand reaching up to stroke Ana's cheek. (darling, darling, take care of our family, okay?)
"¡esperar! ¡esperar! ¡papá! ¡Lo haré, pero papá, por favor no te vayas! ¡Te amo!" Ana pleads, watching as her dad's eyes flutter close for the last time. (wait! wait! dad! I will, but dad, please don't go! I love you!)
"¡papá! ¡papá! ¡despertar! por favor papa!" Ana sobs, crying over her father's dead body. (dad! dad! wake up! please dad!)
Ana turns and sees two Cuban police officers approaching her father's dead body.
"¡por favor! ¡por favor! ¡No! ¡no te lo lleves! ¡todavía está vivo! ¡por favor!" Ana begs, trying to catch up to the police officers starting to drag her father away. (please! please! no! don't take him! he's still alive! please!)
One of the police officers turns and backhands her. Ana falls to the ground, crying as her father is suddenly gone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Está bien, mamá, te lo prometo, volveré con la medicina muy pronto y todos os sentiréis mejor." Thirteen year old Ana promises to her bed ridden mother. (okay, mom, I promise, I'll be back with the medicine so soon and you all will feel all better.)
Her mother gives her a weak smile. "Vamos bebé" (go baby)
"Te amo" Ana murmurs, as she stands up with a satchel to retrieve the medicine. (I love you)
She turns around when her mom doesn't say it back. Her mother's eyes are closed and Ana just assumes that she's taking another nap.
Ana steps over her other sick relatives in their one room shack before starting to sprint towards the hospital.
"¡por favor! ¡Necesito cinco dosis! para mi familia por favor! Necesitan ayuda, ¡debes dármela!" Ana insists to a nurse. (please! I need five doses! for my family, please! they need help, you must give me them!)
"Eso no funcionará, niña, sabemos que ustedes, los jóvenes, los han estado usando para fabricar drogas." The nurse spits out. (that won't work, child, we know you youngins have been using them to make drugs.)
"¡No! ¡No! ¡Eso no es lo que estoy tratando de hacer! ¡Solo quiero salvar a mi familia! ¡Por favor, se están muriendo!" Ana begs. (no! no! that's not what I'm trying to do! I just want to save my family! Please, they're dying!)
The nurse scoffs and walks away.
'Mija, mija, cuida a nuestro familia, ¿sí?'
Her father wanted her to take care of her family and she will.
Ana pretends to leave the hospital, only to sneak around back. She finds trucks of the medicine she needs. Ana sneaks into one of the trucks and quickly takes five vials and putting them in her bag before sneaking out.
"¡ey! ¡Vuelve aquí, perra!" A security guard yells, seeing her but Ana ignores him, running back to her hut. (hey, get back here, bitch)
"¡mamá! ¡mamá! ¡Tengo la medicina! ¡Está todo bien!" Ana exclaims as she enters the hut. (mom! mom! I have the medicine! it's all okay!)
"La sentimos mucho cariño" Her grandmother says, hugging Ana. (we're so sorry honey)
"¿Q-qué quieres decir? ¿Mamá?" Ana asks, looking past her maternal grandmother and seeing her mom limp on the floor, a trickle of blood leaving her slightly open mouth.
"¡No! ¡mamá! ¡mamá! ¡despertar! ¡por favor mamá! ¡despertar! ¡Te necesito!" Ana sobs over her mom's body, clinging to her.
[Time Skip]
"No! Mama!" Ana exclaims, suddenly waking up.
A few tears run down her sandy face at the dreams she had.
Ana looks down, and everything that happened hits her like a truck. A new determination runs through.
Her papa told her to protect her family.
Her family is Tim and Angela and Lucy and Nyla and Nolan and Grey and Aaron and Dominique and Jack and the city of LA.
She has to protect them.
Ana pushes herself up, ignoring how her body doesn't appreciate the pain. Ana looks around for any means of transportation. Off in the very distance she sees a shack and she starts to limp towards it.
It takes an hour before Ana reaches it but when she does, Ana realizes the walk was worth it.
Inside is a motorcycle, not in tip top condition but definitely functional. Ana also quickly finds the keys, meaning she doesn't have to hot wire it.
Ana lets out a little sob as she straddles the motorcycle, her entire body in terrible pain. Ana pushes through it, moving the motorcycle out of the shed.
There are distant car tracks that Ana sees in the sand and she follows those. Ana has never ridden a motorcycle before and it definitely takes some getting used to but soon she's able to drive it adequately in the sand. The motorcycle is going very fast, definitely faster than the Jeep.
Fast enough that Ana starts to gain on it, despite her being asleep for who knows how long and having used an hour just to walk to the shed where the motorcycle was stored.
Once she's close enough, Ana skids her motorcycle and slides off of it. The motorcycle crashes into the back of the Jeep, successfully immobilizing it.
"wow, you just won't give up" The woman says, getting out of the car with Davion.
"you're not gonna win" Ana says, struggling to stand.
"of course I will" The woman smirks and makes a motion for Davion to attack her.
Davion pins her to the ground but Ana knees him in the groin. He groans in pain and it's enough for Ana to flip them over. Her body is weak and she doesn't have enough time to restrain him before he's throwing her off of him and into the side of the Jeep.
The sound of Jack crying from inside the car gives Ana more strength. She moves to kick Davion but Davion grabs her legs and flips her.
"gah!" Ana exclaims in pain.
She lands on her side and feels the keys to the motorcycle. She doesn't have any time to use them before Davion is tackling her and landing punch after punch. Ana finally grabs the keys, not hesitating before sticking the sharp part of the key into Davion's neck.
"aah!" Davion yells.
Ana stabs him again with the knife before pushing him off of her.
The woman becomes scared when Ana wins the fight and runs off. Ana could chase after her, but she's very weak and she needs to check on Jack and Dominique. Ana groans, standing up and limping as she opens the car door.
"you saved us" Dominique squeals, hugging Ana who winces.
"sorry" Dominique apologizes.
" 's okay" Ana murmurs.
"come here, bud" Ana coos to Jack, taking him from Dominique and cradling him.
[Time Skip]
"Ana!" Tim calls, getting out of the helicopter which landed a few yards away from where Ana had been using a make shift flare to call for SOS.
"Tim" Ana exclaims, running into his arms.
"are you okay?" Tim asks, trying to separate from the hug so he can look at her.
Ana doesn't let him, clinging to him and burying her head in his chest.
"we need to be together now" Ana insists.
"what, baby?" Tim questions.
"I can't-... I love you and I need to be your girlfriend, please" Ana pleads.
Tim melts a little.
"I love you too, we're gonna talk about this more once you're safe in a hospital bed, okay?" Tim decides.
Ana nods, letting him pick her up and set her down in the ambulance while Angela and Grey get Jack and Dominique inside.
Ana curls into Tim's lap.
She protected her family, just like her papa wanted.
