"No hablo inglés." Carmen says, holding Ana close to her side as they try to buy food from a gas station in New Orleans. (I don't speak English)
"and I don't speak Mexican lady, now get the hell out of my store" The store owner scoffs.
"por favor, solo esto por esto, ¿no?" Ana pleads, putting five bottle of waters on the counter and showing the store owner two twenty dollar bills. (please, just this for this, right?)
"didn't know you brown people were so dumb" The store owner mumbles to himself, taking the cash.
"Nosotras podemos tomar esto, ahora, ¿verdad?" Ana clarifies. (we can take this, now, right?)
"get the hell out of my store" The store owner takes the water bottles.
"¿que señor?" Ana asks. (what, sir?)
"do you know what this means?" The store owner inquires, taking out a gun.
"Vamos, Ana." Carmen instructs, starting to guide Ana out of the store. (Let's go, Ana)
"pero ¿qué pasa con el agua?" Ana frowns as they leave. (but what about the water?)
"La resolveremos, cariño." Carmen promises. (we'll figure it out, honey.)
"We should take her here"
Ana groans a little as her eyes flutter open. Her head is pounding and her eyes take a while to adjust to the pink and blue world she's been living in for the past three weeks. She finds herself in a chair, her legs tied to the legs of the chair and her arms tied together behind the chair.
She looks around, finding herself in one of the rooms of the abandoned retirement home. It's sterile and creepy, but that's not one of her worries at the moment.
Four of her worries are discussing amongst themselves in the corner.
"Will she die from that height?"
"I thought you couldn't speak English" Ana murmurs, looking over at her grandparents who are talking in English.
"Your naivety is unbelievable" Esmerelda scoffs, sounding much different than Ana has ever heard her sound before.
Hate. Her words are full of hate.
"You're my grandparents" Ana frowns, trying to escape her constraints.
Ana had been suspecting that it was them, but the reality still feels like she's been dunked in cold water. Her heart skips a beat, not in the fun way that happens when Tim smiles at her, but instead out of fear and heartbreak.
"Unfortunately" Mario rolls his eyes.
"You want to kill me" Ana realizes, her eyes wide. "Why?"
"You killed our family" Carmen sneers.
"No, I didn't" Ana whispers, her eyes now becoming glassy.
"You were with him when my son died" Esmerelda points out.
"The police killed him" Ana frowns.
"And who are you now?" Esmerelda raises an eyebrow.
"I'm a cop" Ana says, weakly. "To convince you all that not all police are bad, that police officers can help and protect, to inspire confidence in law enforcement, to show you that I won't let what happened to my father happen to anyone else"
Carmen slaps her across the face and Ana grunts in pain.
"No. You became a cop to make us suffer" Carmen insists.
"I don't want you to suffer, I love you" Ana whispers. "A-and I thought you loved me too"
"We never loved you" Carmen shakes her head.
"W-what?" Ana murmurs. "B-but you saved me, y-you took me to America"
"We wanted to leave you behind" Mario sneers.
"You helped me onto the raft" Ana frowns, shaking her head.
"We were trying to let the police get you" Jose reveals.
"Why?" Ana whispers, feeling her heart break.
"Because you were a burden, we could've left with your mom before they got sick, but your mom insisted on staying so that you would have a stable childhood, it's your fault they're dead" Esmerelda disagrees.
"B-but I didn't make that decision, I-I wanted to save them, I ran to the hospital to get them medicine" Ana sniffles.
"And you failed" Carmen says, coldly.
"You are a failure" Esmerelda agrees.
"I'm not a failure" Ana insists.
"You couldn't even keep your grandparents safe from a dirty cop" Mario points out.
"I saved you, I-I apologized" Ana cries.
"It wasn't enough" Jose says.
"You're doing this because of Armstrong?" Ana whispers.
"Armstrong was the straw that broke the camel's back, as the Americans say" Carmen replies.
"you're awful people" Ana hisses, crying.
"and you're a mistake" Jose says, kicking her chair over so she hits the ground hard.
Ana struggles, trying to get out of the restraints but ultimately failing.
Carmen drags her chair back up to an upright position.
"you hurt people I care about" Ana murmurs.
"you killed people we care about" Esmerelda reminds her.
"on accident! I wasn't trying to kill my dad, he was my hero as was my mom, why would I want them dead?" Ana sobs.
"accident or not, my daughter is dead because of you" Carmen responds.
"your daughter is dead because you didn't tell me to get the medical supplies sooner!" Ana argues.
"don't blame this on me!" Carmen slaps her across the face.
"then don't be the one at fault" Ana sniffles.
"I'm the reason that we're not still hitch hiking through the country, I'm the reason you had a home and food, I'm the reason you were able to find hobbies and learn to enjoy life again without stress, I'm the reason for all of that and you just threw it away like all of my hard work meant nothing to you! I worked my ass off to get a scholarship for you! I taught myself English from scratch for you so that I could give you the life you never got in Cuba! I'm the reason you're even able to kill me to begin with! Because I'm naive and stupid and dumb to ever think that maybe, just maybe, people loved me, because clearly not. You all were my world! I woke up everyday for you! I worked overtime to pay for your health issues! Every waking moment was revolving around you four but that still didn't make up for my mistakes!" Ana exclaims.
"you know what? if I'm a mistake, then I'm the best damn mistake you've ever made and if you're about to stand here and kill me, do it now because you should just remember that I'm the reason you get to kill me, I'm the reason you're here right now and not dead from police corruption in Cuba!"
"shut up!" Esmerelda yells, pulling out a gun and pointing it at Ana.
"do it" Ana sniffles. "it'll be the last thing I gave you"
Jose, who was incredibly moved by Ana's speech. "don't"
"Jose, don't tell me you're backing out now" Esmerelda turns to look at Jose.
"Yeah, I am, because she's right, she's the reason we're here in the first place" Jose protests.
"she is, she's the reason that our son is dead" Esmerelda reminds him.
"she didn't kill him, the police did" Jose argues.
"She is the police now" Mario points out.
"good police, Marla told us that even prisoners like her" Carmen concedes.
"who's Marla?" Ana asks.
"shut up" Esmerelda steps towards Ana and presses the gun to her forehead.
"don't shoot my granddaughter" Carmen orders.
"your granddaughter killed your daughter, remember?" Mario hisses, on Esmerelda's side.
"no" Jose decides, stepping forward and trying to take the gun from Esmerelda.
"I'll do what I want, and I'm gonna kill this puta" Esmerelda insists.
Her hand slips on the gun and a shot is fired.
