"thank you" Ana murmurs, hoarsely, when a firefighter hands her a bottle of water.
She takes small sips, feeling the cool liquid soothe her sore throat. Her nose and throat are burning from the inhalation of smoke. There is little that can be done about her nose but the water certainly helps her throat.
The sound of sirens is giving her a little bit of headache from where she's sat in the back of an ambulance, a blanket wrapped around her. The number of police cars and firefighters on the scene is definitely too many, but when the first responders found out whose apartment was on fire, they very quickly arrived at the scene.
Smitty is currently on a run to procure her donuts. Ana really isn't in the mood to eat but Smitty seemed so desperate to help that she couldn't deny him anything.
Meanwhile the detectives and Sergeant Grey are trying to figure out who the hell set her bed on fire, but their anger is clouding their brain, making it almost impossible to get anything done.
Lucy, Nolan, and Aaron are their runners, chasing after lead after that ends up being dead end after dead end.
Tim, surprisingly, is very calm, or at least the most calm out of everyone. He was the first to arrive on scene and after making sure Ana was being taken care of, he's been contacting the FBI and CIA to pool all of their information together.
Tamara is sitting next to Ana, asleep on Ana's shoulder and wrapped in a similar blanket to the one Ana is wearing.
The reason Ana's throat is so sore and she has a few first degree burns is because she insisted on rescuing Billy, Max, and Moose. Not that Moose really needed rescuing, when Ana left the front door open, he was out of there as fast as a lightning bolt. Billy was also easy to grab but Max is a kitten and was not in the mood to be picked up, despite her life literally being threatened.
Cats can be pretty stupid sometimes.
All three of Ana's animals are safely at Tim's house, he swung back by his house to drop them off and to get Ana some clothes. Underneath the blanket she's wrapped in, Ana is sporting one of Tim's old military shirts and his sister's leggings.
"Nugget, got a call for you" Tim says, walking over, holding a vibrating phone.
"thank you" Ana says, hoarsely.
Tim gives her a smile and kisses her forehead.
"hi" Ana answers the phone.
"nugget, are you okay? Tim said they don't know who the stupid bastard is but I swear to god once he's in prison, I will beat the shit out of him. I'm not kidding nugget, this is unacceptable, targeting you? Caine and Thomas are livid and so am I-..." Oscar starts to ramble over the phone.
"Oscar?" Ana asks, interrupting him, while Tim lays Tamara down on the stretcher in the ambulance.
"of course it's me, kid, who else do you think it would be?" Oscar questions.
"you're in prison, how are you on the phone right now?" Ana asks.
"the warden gave me a phone" Oscar shrugs.
Ana frowns. "okay... but I'm okay, you really don't need to worry"
"all I'm doing right now is worrying! You know what we would do if something happened to you?" Oscar inquires.
"no..." Ana trails off, not sure where he's going with this.
"we would literally all perish off the face of the Earth, a world without you in it... it'd be terrible, please don't leave us, nugget" Oscar pleads.
"I'm not going anywhere, Oscar" Ana promises, softly.
"you better not, because if you do I will resurrect and squeeze all of the death out of you" Oscar threatens.
Ana giggles at his funny threat. "I'll keep that in mind, thank you"
"of course, nugget, now how are you feeling?" Oscar asks.
"a little scared, I didn't-..." Ana sighs. "I didn't think that the threats were going to mean anything"
"it's a good thing you told Tim, he called me yesterday and explained it all to me" Oscar says.
"how much contact do you have with my family?" Ana giggles.
"oh, so much" Oscar replies. "have to make sure you're safe, nugget"
"I appreciate that" Ana answers, softly.
"hey, how's that murderer cop?" Oscar questions.
"he's not a murderer, he was falsely convicted" Ana rolls her eyes.
"yeah, yeah" Oscar shrugs.
"he told me that you threatened him" Ana smiles when Tim sits down next to her and kisses her forehead.
"damn right I did" Oscar says, proudly. "you're the only good thing I've got going for me"
"I'm not the only good thing" Ana argues, softly.
"name one other thing" Oscar dares her.
Ana is silent for a long moment. "um... you're friends with Caine?"
"I'm only friends with Caine because we both agree you're the most precious thing in the universe" Oscar retorts.
Ana blushes, biting on her lip. "okay, I see where you're going with this."
"aw, come on, I've only talked with her for a moment" Ana hears Oscar whine to another person on his end of the phone.
"I get to talk to her after" The warden threatens.
"yeah, yeah" Oscar shoos her away before turning his attention back to the phone.
"is everything okay?" Ana asks, softly.
Ana never hears Oscar's reply because her phone suddenly catches on fire. It burns her ear and hand before Ana drops the burning phone onto the ground.
"shit" Tim curses, stamping out the fire.

"I can't wait to hear this story." Harper says as her and Ana approach a guy digging a hole in the park.
"This isn't what it looks like." The man instantly blurts out.
"well, it looks like you're making a falling hazard in the middle of a public park" Ana remarks, softly, a bandage on her ear from where it was burned.
"Yeah, that's part's exactly what it looks like." The guy admits.
"The question is, why?" Harper questions.
"Uh, I lost my keys?" The guy tries.
Ana picks up a piece of paper that has some sort of riddle on it. "is this yours, sir?" Ana asks, softly.
"Yeah, actually, uh -- can I get that back?" The guy requests.
""If gold's your goal, then take a stroll, let angles point you here."" Harper reads aloud.
"are you looking for buried gold, sir?" Ana questions, softly.
"If I say yes, are you gonna arrest me?" The guy asks.
"No. Since you haven't done any real damage to city property, we will cite you and let you go, but you need to fill this hole back in." Harper replies.
"Okay. Yes. Yes, it's a treasure hunt. But I'm starting to think there's no treasure down here." The guy admits.
"You know that says "Angel's," not "angles," right?" Harper points out.
"Man. I've been digging all day!" The man exclaims, when one of the stone pillars he's digging around collapses.
"Does that count as...?" The man starts.
"yeah... that's real damage, sir" Ana nods, biting her lip.
"Well, I-I'll fix it. I'll fix it!" the guy exclaims.

"he didn't kill her" Angela is talking to Harper and Tim in the hallway.
"and why didn't he?" Tim asks, all three of them talking quietly.
"hi" Ana murmurs, softly, as she walks down the hallway.
"hey" All of them say.
"we're just talking about what happened last night" Tim assures her, softly, cupping her face in his hands. "how are you feeling?"
" 'm good, the medicine you gave me is working and I can still hear pretty well" Ana replies, softly.
"good" Tim smiles, kissing her forehead.

"This poem was posted on Reddit two days ago, and it's the reason why a young mother is laying in the morgue right now." Grey says during a briefing.
"Uh, people are only gonna get crazier hunting for the treasure." Tim adds.
"So Nolan was right." Harper realizes.
"I'm sorry, if you say that again, I can record it." Nolan requests.
"People actually think that this will lead them to buried treasure?" Harper asks.
"Yes, because Stuart Packer claims to be the author." Grey replies.
"Why does that name sound familiar?" Tim frowns.
"He pulled the Joseph & Wells robbery back in '03. Ronnie Wick was the lead detective. I was there when they brought Stuart in, the little snot. He wouldn't tell us where he hid the gold coins." Grey explains.
"gold coins, sir?" Ana asks, softly.
"Yeah. Nearly 2 mil worth." Jerry nods.
"We never recovered the coins." Grey sighs.
"The city's losing its mind. I mean, w-we're getting flooded with calls of people climbing the Hollywood sign, diving into Echo Park Lake." Tim points out.
"All right, we need to find this gold and to end the chaos as quickly as possible. Now, Chen, you deciphered the first clue. How'd you do it?" Grey asks Lucy.
"Well, i-it -- it first clicked when I realized that "angle" could mean "fishhook." The pier is a favorite fishing point, and fisherman are also called anglers." Lucy explains.
"Nerd." Tim snorts and Ana playfully swats his arm.
"What?" Lucy says, pretending to be offended.
"Don't let him shame you. That was a great catch." Jerry pipes up.
"Thank you, Jerry." Lucy grins.
"Okay. What about the rest of the stanza?" Grey questions.
"Uh, "Next find the lens thru which you'll spy the West Coast's greatest view." it has to be the lens of the viewfinder at the pier" Ana reads aloud.
"Yes, and, uh, um, this next line, "The fee you pay," refers to the fee of the viewfinder, which is 75 cents, so we just need to change 75 into a-a year." Lucy adds.
"But what century? That could be 1775 --" Nolan starts.
"It's 1975. It's the Year of the Rabbit." Harper remarks.
"Call me a nerd. I dare you." Harper threatens Tim.
"Well, uh, the poem states, "The fee you pay becomes the year of Rabbit minus two," so 1975 minus 2 is 1973." Lucy says.
"Okay, okay, okay. What does it mean?" Grey questions.
"1973 could be the combination of a safe, uh, the number of a storage locker." Nolan suggests.
"Uh, it's not gonna make sense until we solve the second stanza. The third stanza says that, once we put those two clues together, we will find the gold." Harper points out.
"Harper, Nugget, and Chen, I'm putting you in charge of solving this." Grey decides.
"Uh, sir. I have been known to solve a Times crossword, uh, once or twice in my day." Nolan pipes up.
"Well, I'm sure they'll let you tag along if you ask nicely, Nolan. Thorsen, you're riding with me the rest of the shift. Everyone, be vigilant out there." Grey says, dismissing them.
[Timeskip]
"Oh, dammit. Tim just texted me. Him and Jerry just had a big breakthrough." Lucy curses.
"Oh, he's just trying to get in your head. Ignore him." Nolan assures her.
"I agree. Focus." harper nods.
""Watch the Stars of Hollywood influence from their spheres."" Ana reads aloud the next verse.
"Can't be movie stars. That's too obvious." Nolan sighs.
""A monument to Rebels gone." Are they dead? Is it a cemetery? The Forest Lawn Cemetery? They do mention "lawn."" Lucy points out.
""monuments," "dead Rebels," and "darkness' edge." It could be a cemetery?" Ana suggests, softly.
"Yeah, but what about these spheres?" Harper points out.
"Uh, where are they influencing from? The -- The heavens? The stars?" Nolan guesses.
"Stars, spheres, celestial objects, heavens." Ana lists, softly.
"Griffith Observatory" The other three all realize at once.
"Yes, and the Observatory was in the movie "Rebel Without a Cause."" Lucy adds.
"They even have a bust of James Dean's head up there. All right, the rest, we can decipher later." Harper decides.
"Wait, wait. Hold on. I gotta text Tim and tell him we are about to kick his ass." Lucy grins.
[Timeskip]
"James Dean's bust is just up this way." Harper says as they get out of the shop.
"Officers." A man nods.
"Looks like we need to up our game." Lucy frowns.
"Seriously." Nolan agrees.
"Gotta be in it to win it." A treasure hunter remarks.
"He's got a bomb!" A woman exclaims.
"wait! wait! stop right there!" Ana says, to a man with a bomb.
"I know this looks bad, but if you'll just let me blow up that wall, I can finally prove to my wife that I was right about something." The treasure hunter pleads.
"Sir, you need to drop the bomb right now!" Nolan orders.
"Guys, chill! I know what I'm doing. Ohh!" The treasure hunter says before the bomb explodes.
[Timeskip]
"These damn treasure hunters are packing dynamite now?" Grey curses.
"The deceased is a special case, sir!" Nolan yells.
"Why are you yelling?" Grey asks.
"I'm sorry. Uh, uh, my ears. The explosion was loud." Nolan explains.
"the deceased worked at a quarry in Oregon, that's where he got the ammunitions" Ana explains, softly.
"They're coming all the way from Oregon? That's it. We need to lock down this location, cut off access to any more gold seekers. Now, how close are you guys to figuring out the poem?" Grey questions.
"We're at a bit of an impasse, sir." Harper explains.
"The second stanza states that the next clue is only visible in early morning light." Lucy adds.
"The longer this goes on, the more dangerous it becomes. Look, I need the gold found." Grey orders.
"yes, sir" Ana nods, softly.
[Timeskip]
"Okay, we have until dawn tomorrow to figure out this next passage, but no pressure." Lucy says.
"Okay, look. "A monument to Rebels." That's plural, so it can't just mean James Dean. What other statues are nearby?" Harper questions.
"Okay, there's one on the front lawn of six prominent astronomers. I mean, scientists ahead of their time could be seen as rebels." Lucy suggests.
"what about Isaac Newton, is he one of the statues?" Ana asks.
"Yeah. What -- What are you thinking?" Lucy questions.
""Follow in a great man's path, his First Law as your guide."" Ana reads aloud.
"So we start at Newton's statue." Lucy realizes.
"And follow his path in a straight line." Harper agrees.
""Until darkness' edge you find." What -- So we walk until we hit darkness? A shadow. That's why we have to start at early morning light -- otherwise the shadow won't be in the right place. Ooh!" Lucy exclaims.
"There it is." Harper grins.
[Timeskip]
"found another damn badge bunny today" Tim groans as he gets home.
Since Ana's apartment was almost burned to the ground, she and Tamara are staying at Tim's house while Lucy is crashing at Nolan's.
"I've had those a lot" Ana frowns, softly.
"I'm well aware" Tim grins, kissing her forehead, watching her make spaghetti. "though I think that's less because of your badge and more because of how amazing you are"
Ana giggles and blushes, turning to look at him.
"so who was your badge bunny?" Ana asks, softly.
"Jerry's daughter" Tim answers.
"ah" Ana says, softly. "and I'm guessing you didn't ask him to retire?"
"no, I did not" Tim shakes his head.
" 'm sorry" Ana frowns.
"I'll take care of it in the morning" Tim decides.
"do you need any help?" Ana asks, softly. "I could talk to him if you like"
Tim lights up. "that might just be perfect"
[Timeskip]
"Well, where the hell did he stash the gold?!" Jerry questions.
"Uh, we'll figure it out, all right? Our plan is solid. We'll cross-reference our new search grid with every location in that file until we find it." Tim explains.
"I don't know. It's gonna take a lot of days, Sarge. A cop like me doesn't have many of those left." Jerry frowns.
"um... sir, if we could talk about-..." Ana starts.
"Get the hell out of here." Jerry exclaims.
"Excuse me?" Tim asks, getting protective over Jerry interrupting Ana like that.
"I know where the gold is." Jerry replies.
"Wait, for real? You sure?" Tim questions.
"Absolutely." Jerry nods.
[Timeskip]
"Control, Adam-100. Go ahead and cancel that backup call. We're Code 4." Jerry says over the radio while Ana handcuffs the man.
"How did you guys get here so fast?" Lucy asks.
"We were already here." Tim explains.
"Did you...?" Lucy prompts.
"Find the gold? Let's see." Tim replies.
"My gold. I was so close." The man they handcuffed says in remorse.
"Yeah, not really. What -- How did you guys even end up down here?" Lucy asks.
"Jerry found it in the file. It said in there that Stuart's sister worked at the Bonaventure Hotel up the street." Tim explains.
"And their parking garage has access to all these abandoned subway tunnels." Jerry adds.
"Yeah, so Officer McGrady thought Stuart might have known about it from his sister and stashed the gold down here." Ana finishes, softly.
"The entrance was sealed a few years back, but I sweet-talked the maintenance guys so they opened up, let us in." Jerry says.
"Me, princess, and Jerry win." Tim decides.
"No, we would have been here first, but we had some police matters to deal with." Harper argues.
"Great. Good job. We still won." Tim insists.
"Nope, we're gonna call it a tie." Lucy shakes her head.
"What? No way it was a tie!" Tim argues.
"100% a tie." Harper replies.
"Ohh!" Tim groans.
[Timeskip]
Tim went out with drinks with Jerry to celebrate his last day while Ana went home. Tamara has a few night college classes, so Ana is home alone.
"Moose! I'm home!" Ana calls to her dog as she unlocks the door and enters Tim's house.
However there's no response from her rescued dog.
"Moose!" Ana calls, setting down the keys. "Billy! Max!"
She walks further into the house. Ana hears something and whips around but sees nothing. Suddenly a blinding pain hits her in the legs and she falls to the floor. Ana screams in pain, struggling to move her broken legs.
Someone roughly picks her up and throws her over their shoulder, before dropping a match onto the kerosene soaked couch, which goes up in flames. The pain is searing and Ana only stays awake for a few more seconds before falling unconscious.
