(Y/N) entered the Squad 4 barracks in a rush. Surprisingly, the first person he came face to face with was Unohana herself.

(Y/N): I hope I'm not too late...

Unohana: No, but I was quite concerned. I've never taken you to be the type to be late, (Y/N).

(Y/N): Something... important came up at the last minute.

Unohana: Is that so? Well, that's quite alright.

(Y/N): So um... if I may ask, was there an update on the request?

Unohana: About training? Well...

(Flashback)

Unohana stood in front of Central 46. The group was currently in an uproar.

Central Member #1: You can't possibly be serious, Captain Unohana!

Unohana: I'm most certainly am.

Central Member #2: That Substitute Shinigami was capable of not only holding back Aizen but was capable of taking down Kenpachi Azashiro. Any more strength and he can be a possible threat to us!

Central Member #3: If that boy decides to switch sides now, we won't be fighting just him, but the entirety of Hueco Mundo too!

Unohana: There's no reason to fear (Y/N) (L/N). He's made his goals quite clear to everyone. He considers everyone here in Soul Society as a friend worth protecting. Would you not want someone like that on your side?

Central Member #1: Don't play that card with us, Unohana! You simply have a soft spot for the boy. We didn't forget that you and your Squad was the first one to assist that boy and Kisuke Urahara in their little experiment to give Ichigo Kurosaki his Shinigami abilities back. What's the real reason for your insistence on training the boy?

Unohana: I do hope you all know that this level of distrust is the reason why Ginjo Kugo made his defect from the Soul Society. However, if you really want to know, it's because I trust him. It's as simple as that. Though I wouldn't mind having a second lieutenant alongside Isane.

Central Member #4: Nothing but charity work. You're a captain, Unohana. You have responsibilities and taking care of this boy isn't one of them. He's already been trained by multiple Captain Level Shinigamis in Kisuke Urahara, Tessai Tsukiabishi, and Yoruichi Shihoin.

One of the judges finally spoke.

Judge: If that's all you came here to ask then, I will now give an answer. Retsu Unohana, your request to train the Substitute Shinigami, (Y/N) (L/N), has been rejected.

Unohana wasn't surprised in the least.

Unohana: I see. It's unfortunate but an outcome I saw coming from a mile away. I'll take my leave then.

Unohana turned around to leave. However, before exiting, Unohana spoke one last time.

Unohana: I do hope you remember the name of the "boy" you're all so scared of. Afterall, he may be the one saving your lives in the future.

(Flashback End)

(Y/N): A shame, but I guess I should've seen this coming.

Unohana: Are you giving up already?

(Y/N): Huh? But I wouldn't want you to get in trouble for disobeying orders.

Unohana: That's only if they find out. If I can't train you here in Soul Society, then I'll simply train you somewhere else.

(Y/N): But wouldn't you still need permission for that? It seems I'm the problem in this situation.

Unohana: But this wouldn't be the first time you've hidden something from Central 46, wouldn't it?

(Y/N): The Spirit Sword incident was different. Even if we were banished from Soul Society, there wouldn't be much of an issue. I can't pretend to know Soul Society matters, but I find it hard to believe a Captain disobeying orders from Central 46 orders would come without consequences. I'd feel horrible if you had to get in trouble for me.

Unohana: I appreciate your concern, but allow me to handle whatever comes up with Central 46 if it comes down to it.

(Y/N): There's still one problem... The Department of R&D would detect you immediately.

(Y/N) thought to himself more a while before coming up with an idea.

(Y/N): Maybe we don't need to leave Soul Society. I know a place that we can train without Central noticing.

Unohana: Oh? Somewhere even I don't know about?

(Y/N): Yeah.

(Timeskip) The next day

(Y/N) stood in a familiar hideout, alongside Unohana. (Y/N) took a moment to take in the scenery. Unohana then spoke up.

Unohana: I never knew such a place existed.

(Y/N): I don't think anyone would. Mr. Urahara and Yoruichi made sure of that. According to Mr. Urahara...

(Flashback)

Urahara: The hideout is totally fine. Nobody will find you there. You see, when Captain Hirako and the others were Hollowfied, Tessai put both a double and triple barrier around the hideout to keep us from being detected. It's nearly impossible for anyone to sense what's going on in there unless they're particularly suspicious about it.

(Flashback End)

Unohana: I see, so that's how you knew about it.

(Y/N): *nods* This place is where Yoruichi taught Ichigo, Renji, and I how to use Bankai as well. I had to make sure both of them were alright with me using it before coming here.

Unohana took a look around before spotting the hot springs located in the hideout.

Unohana: *thinking* To even replicate the "White Bone Pond". Urahara's intelligence is always a surprise.

Unohana then spoke up.

Unohana: I think that's more than enough talking. Be prepared.

(Y/N): Alright. What will we be doing?

Unohana: Tell me, (Y/N). How good are you at healing your own wounds with Kaidou?

(Y/N): Well, nowadays my hollow physiology takes care of healing my own wounds. Though I still use Kaidou when my wounds are severe. Though if I had to get more specific, I'd say smaller wounds heal almost instantly but it takes more effort to heal wounds the more devastating they are.

Unohana: I see... If that's the case...

https://youtu.be/Tb8Bay1YHr8

In a blink of an eye, Unohana drew her zanpakuto and closed the distance between herself and (Y/N). (Y/N) was taken off guard as Unohana cut into his abdomen.

As (Y/N) looked at where he was stabbed frozen in shock.

Unohana: I did say "Be prepared", didn't I?

As (Y/N) looked back at Unohana, he noticed a complete difference. (Y/N) felt the bloodlust flowing from Unohana. Unohana's usual braided hair somehow undid itself, now allowing itself to flow freely. The look in Unohana's eyes was cold.

(Y/N): *thinking* She is completely different from the Captain Unohana I fought during the invasion...

Unohana removed her blade from (Y/N)'s stomach as she swung her blade to the side, causing the blood that covered the blade to hit the ground.

Unohana: By the time we're finished, You will know how to heal any wound without effort. You will know how to fight without wasted movements. And you will have much better control of your spiritual pressure. Now, start healing and ready your weapon.

(Y/N) swiftly followed Unohana's instructions as he healed his wound and grabbed his scythe. But as (Y/N) grabbed his scythe, he noticed something.

Unohana: I must apologize, (Y/N). I wasn't entirely truthful to you.

(Y/N): W-what do you mean?

Unohana: You aren't going to train against the person you know as Retsu Unohana. The person in front of you right now is Yachiru Unohana. The First Kenpachi.

(Y/N): You're... a Kenpachi?

~~~~
(Y/N): Thanks again, Captain Unohana. Sorry you had to heal me a second time.
Unohana: It's no problem really. I made it a point to make a detour here when you decided to fight Azashiro by yourself.
(Y/N): Really? Well, I guess when you're going up against a Kenpachi, there's bound to be serious injuries involved.
Unohana: Not just that, but if Azashiro really did succeed in fusing with you, I would have made it my personal goal to kill him myself.
~~~~

That explained everything. Unohana, however, didn't respond as she dashed towards (Y/N) once again and swung her zanpakuto at (Y/N)'s neck. (Y/N) narrowly blocked the attack as the two blades came in contact with each other. (Y/N) had to dig his feet into the ground to prevent himself from being blown away from the massive force of Unohana's attack.

(Y/N) tried to take the offensive and swung his scythe in response, aiming for her arm. Unohana blocked (Y/N)'s attack with ease, scoring herself another strike to (Y/N)'s arm.

Unohana: I told you not to waste any movements, didn't I? Why aim for my arm when you could've aimed for a more vital spot? Just because this is training doesn't mean I'll hold back. You shouldn't either. I will be fighting to kill. I'm sure Urahara trained you this way as well.

In truth, Unohana was right. (Y/N) aimed for Unohana's arm because he was scared to strike a vital organ. However, Unohana made her intentions clear as she attempted to stab (Y/N) in multiple vital spots.

Unohana then flash stepped behind (Y/N), attempting to stab him in the back, however, (Y/N) backed away just in time to avoid the attack. (Y/N) then decided to take Unohana's advice and swing for a vital organ. The heart.

Unohana parried the attack and returned the favor by piercing (Y/N) in the heart. (Y/N) felt his body turn cold and his body limp. (Y/N) dropped his weapon as he started to lose feeling in his body. (Y/N) was in Shikai, so there wasn't any chance of him resurrecting himself from this fatal blow. (Y/N) struggled to heal his wound to keep himself alive.

Unohana caught (Y/N)'s limp body, whispering in his ear.

Unohana: I won't let you die as long as I'm present.

Immediately, (Y/N) felt rejuvenated as his wound healed. But (Y/N) had no time to question what just happened as he felt himself being thrown across the field.

Unohana: I know what your limits are now. I'll adjust my strength so you can at least keep up.

(Y/N) felt his mind racing. He definitely thought he was about to die. (Y/N) was starting to feel that familiar feeling of fear starting to creep up on him again. The same way he felt during his first encounter with Unohana.

In the midst of his internal confusion, Unohana picked up (Y/N)'s scythe and tossed it to his feet.

Unohana: Pick it up.

(Y/N) froze upon hearing Unohana's voice.

Unohana: I said...Pick it up.

(Y/N) hesitated but picked up his scythe regardless. Unohana then redrew her zanpakuto, and in an instant, delivered two deep slashes diagonally through (Y/N)'s chest.

Unohana: Heal it.

(Y/N) did as Unohana instructed. However, the moment (Y/N) healed his wound, Unohana continued her onslaught of attacks. (Y/N) immediately took a defensive stance, blocking all of Unohana's attacks.

(Y/N): *thinking* I can't be on the defensive forever...

(Y/N) started to fight a lot more aggressively, attempting to counter Unohana's attacks. Eventually, both (Y/N) and Unohana began to trade attacks with each other.

Unohana: *thinking* That's good. You're slowly getting over your fear of death. Instead of fighting despite the fear you feel, you should learn to conquer your fears instead.

Unohana then flash stepped away but (Y/N) gave chase. However, in that moment, (Y/N) felt sharp pain enter his arm and leg. (Y/N) looked down and saw two daggers lodged into him.

(Y/N): *thinking* Daggers? Where was she hiding those?

Unohana took this chance to thrust her zanpakuto, aiming for the center of (Y/N)'s head. (Y/N) decided to not dodge the attack, but instead, use Hierro to harden his skin and grab Unohana's Zanpakuto to stop it from reaching his head. (Y/N) then used his other arm to swing his scythe, landing his first clean hit on Unohana.

Unohana: That's it. Now you're fighting without fear. Have you decided to fight with the intention of killing me?

(Y/N): I don't have much of a choice. You forced my hand to do something I don't want to do. So please, don't make me regret Captain Unohana. Go all out.

Unohana: With pleasure.

Unohana backed away from (Y/N), healing her recent wound almost instantly with Kaidou. With some leftover blood still on her hand, Unohana grabbed her Zanpakuto with her bare hand.

Unohana: Bankai, Minazuki.

Unohana ran her hand alongside her zanpakuto, covering it in blood. However, (Y/N) noticed that Unohana zanpakuto started to produce more blood than Unohana covered the blade with. The area was then filled with a blood-like substance.

(Y/N): *thinking* I shouldn't take any chances either...

(Y/N) stood firm as he prepared for round two.

(Y/N): Bankai, Shi no Tenshi Azuraeru.

The moment (Y/N) activated Bankai, the two Shinigami wasted no time re-engaging in combat. One swing from Unohana's sword sent a wave of blood across the battlefield as it cut into (Y/N)'s shoulder.

(Y/N): *thinking* Even though it's liquid, it still feels like a sharp blade.

(Y/N) decided to rush headfirst while healing his own wound. Closing the distance, (Y/N) attacked Unohana relentlessly. (Y/N) threw away his usual calculated fighting style and focused solely on fighting at full strength. Unohana noticed the drastic difference in (Y/N) fighting style.

Unohana: *thinking* That's right, (Y/N). I never fought you with any complicated strategy in mind. Up until now, you've treated all of your encounters like a battle of minds. Sometimes the easiest method to win a battle is to fight them head on.

More waves of blood made contact with (Y/N). (Y/N) tried to reflect them, but one of them made contact with (Y/N)'s scythe and a decent sized piece of the blade from the scythe was chipped off. Another wave of blood cut into (Y/N)'s side but (Y/N) simply brushed it off as he landed another hit into Unohana's shoulder, nearly reaching her neck.

Unohana's injury healed instantly once again as she stabbed (Y/N) multiple times. Unohana attempted to remove her zanpakuto from (Y/N)'s body but (Y/N) held onto her hand to prevent Unohana from moving. With one swing, (Y/N) brought his scythe down, ready to cut Unohana down...

...

...

...

But it never came.

(End Song)

(Y/N): Was that good enough, Captain Unohana?

Unohana: Yes. A job well done. I'll admit, despite the slow start, your adapting was impressive.

*thinking* Even in the end, he decided to spare an enemy. He couldn't bring himself land the final blow.

The area around the two shinigamis returned to normal as Unohana released her Bankai.

Unohana: So how do you feel?

(Y/N): Huh?

Unohana: Have you noticed how much faster you were healing your wounds during our fight?

(Y/N): Now that you mentioned it...

Unohana: That was because you focused on nothing besides keeping yourself alive. You spared less of your attention thinking of a plan, which allowed you to concentrate more of the control of spiritual energy you needed to heal your injuries.

(Y/N): I see... So my control is getting better...

Unohana: Once you've properly learned control, you can continue to fight the way you've always done. At that point, complete control over your own spiritual energy will be second nature. Now then, let's take a break.

(Y/N): A break?

Unohana: Of course, it hasn't even been an hour yet. I said it before, didn't I? "By the time we're finished, You will know how to heal any wound without effort. You will know how to fight without wasted movements."

(Y/N): I guess I better start mentally preparing myself...

Unohana: Maybe we'll skip the philosophical side of things for now.

(Y/N): I'd appreciate that.

(Y/N) laid flat on his back as he tried to recover mentally and physically from the training session he just experienced. As (Y/N) was catching his breath, Unohana walked towards the blade that broke off from (Y/N)'s scythe and picked it up. It wasn't big but was definitely big enough to potentially cut someone pretty badly.

Unohana: Perhaps I was too aggressive...

Unohana tore a piece of cloth from her captain's cloak and wrapped the blade before securing it somewhere safe.

To be continued.

Boy do I have a bit to say about this chapter.

Once again, Central 46 being Central 46. We also find out that Unohana is also considering recruiting (Y/N) for a spot of lieutenant for Squad 4. We know its possible to have 2 lieutenants because of Kensei (Mashiro and Hisagi) and Kyoraku (Nanao and Genshiro).

Also, writing Unohana's Yachiru personality was a hard one for me personally. I tried my best to keep her in character as much as I could, but I feel like may have slipped a little bit.

When it came to writing the fight scene, Unohana made sure to aim for as many vital spots as she could. From the Heart, Brain, Abdomen (contains may cruical organs such as the liver, Intestines, pancreas, etc) and even the spine, more specifically the T1 and T6 spinal nerves that can cause paralysis (more specifically complete Paraplegia) if damaged. This was just a way to showcase Unohana's medical knowledge on the anatomy.

Also, this is the first time we've seen (Y/N)'s scythe become damaged, and the one time it does gets damaged, it was while he was in Bankai. That means his scythe is damage permanently.

There's an exception to the rule, being Komamura (He and his bankai share the damage dealt to one another, so if Komamura heals, so does his Bankai).
