Isshin: I can't read a single thing in this book.
(F/N): Stick to the books that are written in Japanese. Ryuken will handle the books in German and I'll handle the books written in English.
Isshin: You know English, (F/N)?
(F/N): Yeah. At some point I asked the old man to teach me at least one other language besides Japanese.
Ryuken: That still leaves the books written in Spanish.
Tessai: Leave it to me. It may take a while and it may be inaccurate in some places, but a translator is better than nothing.
(F/N): I'll leave it to you then. In the meantime... Jinta, we'll need you to keep track of all of these books and anything we may write down ourselves. We're dealing with at least twenty books with many pages. There's a chance we could lose something valuable so keep an eye out, alright.
Jinta: Gotcha.
(F/N): Ururu, your job may be a bit more difficult. We won't know the exact order these books were written in until after they're translated. We'll need you to arrange all the translations we make into the correct order so it's coherent to read.
Ururu: Alright, I'll do my best.
(Timeskip) A few hours later
The four adults worked tirelessly to make sense of the material they were looking through.
Isshin: I hope this isn't for nothing...
Ryuken: As far as I can tell, this is general info that we already know about the various spiritual races with some of Daichi's own opinions on them.
Tessai: I'm still holding out hope that we find something.
(F/N): I'm confident there is. I'm sure if pops was planning for an eventual encounter with Yhwach, he'd make sure anything he learned and recorded couldn't be found easily by Yhwach or his underlings.
Ryuken: Then how are you so sure we'll find it?
(F/N): I'm sure he left the hidden in plain sight for someone who knew him personally.
Isshin: How about we take a break. Despite having a few snacks and some water, we haven't eaten a good meal.
(F/N): You're right about that... Yo Ryuken, cook us something will ya?
Ryuken: I'm not your butler. And besides, you barged into my house. And this time you bought guests without my permission. I'd say you're responsible for feeding them. And before you ask, No, you won't be using my kitchen to cook.
(F/N): Lighten up will you? I was joking about the cooking thing. It almost sounds like you don't trust me cooking either.
Ryuken: I don't.
(F/N): Ouch. Anyway, how about ordering delivery? I'm paying, obviously.
Isshin: Then I'm ordering extra.
(F/N): I'm scared for my wallet all of a sudden...
After debating what to get, (F/N) stepped out and ordered food for everyone.
Isshin: You should give (F/N) more credit, you know.
Ryuken: Just because I talk to him harshly doesn't mean I don't respect him. I've been upfront with him in that regard many times. If I'm being honest, we probably wouldn't be this far if it wasn't for him.
Tessai: You seem to hold his investigation skills at a high standard.
Ryuken: He wouldn't be as respected at his workplace as he is now if he wasn't.
Isshin: It's funny... I remember hearing your impression of him wasn't a great one.
"I can't blame him. I was a beginner to the supernatural business."
(F/N) rejoined the conversation.
Ryuken: I witnessed you Isshin and (M/N) team up to fight that hollow. Seeing a normal officer damage a hollow of that level intrigued me. I decided I would give my appreciation for helping Masaki but after finding out you were just some unfortunate soul that got caught up in the fight, I thought it was a fluke.
(Flashback) Over two decades ago.
A week after The Battle with White.
A younger (F/N) was leaving the hospital after visiting his surperior, Aoi.
(F/N): *thinking* At least the old man looks to be in high spirits, despite the missing leg...
(F/N) felt like the past week of his life was a dream. Seeing spirits, fighting them, and now lives with him. Speaking of which...
(F/N): *thinking* I hope (M/N)'s alright... Must be boring staying in the house all day...
(F/N) had a lot to do today. His parents said that they would visit after he got off from work, but he also had to train with Urahara. (F/N) decided he just visited the shop a bit late. Now that he's more spiritually aware he needed to learn how to protect himself from the hollows. However a sudden thought crossed his mind.
(F/N): Crap... did I forget to tell mom and dad that I have a roommate now? I didn't tell (M/N) they were coming either. Ugh, too much is on my mind right now...
(F/N) was pulled out of his thoughts as he heard someone behind him speak.
"You're (F/N) (L/N), correct?"
(F/N) turned around and saw a highschool student with white hair wearing a checkered shirt and jeans. (F/N) wasn't sure how this kid knew his name. This immediately put (F/N) on guard.
(F/N): Who's asking?
"My name is Ryuken Ishida. I'd like to thank you for getting Masaki home safely after the hollow incident last week."
(F/N): *thinking* So he knows the girl with the magical bow and arrow. Then she must've told him my name. He also knows about Hollows so he has to be another person who can see spirits.
(F/N) gave Ryuken his full attention.
(F/N): Don't mention it. So what do you want from me, kid?
Ryuken: I want to know what exactly you are?
(F/N): Huh?
Ryuken: You're a human with the ability to fight hollows but you don't show any abilities of a Quincy. In fact, the power you possess feels more like a hollow itself. It's strange because your last name matches that of a Quincy family.
(F/N) A Quincy? I'm not following any of this. What do you mean my power feels like a Hollow's?
Ryuken: Are you not aware of your own power?
(F/N): Can't say I know a damn thing about it. I only gained them the day I helped that Maskai girl you know.
Ryuken: So I wasted my time coming here, is that it?
(F/N): Seems so. Sorry to be a disappointment. If we're done here I'll be going.
Ryuken: Not so fast.
(F/N): What is it now? I got places to be-
Ryuken then began to draw his Heilig Bogen and shot an arrow. However, instead of aiming at (F/N), he hit a hollow that seemed to be sneaking around. The arrow pierced the hollow directly through the head, killing it instantly.
(F/N): Did... Did you know that thing was there?
Ryuken: Of course. Sensing other spiritual beings should be a fundamental skill for people like us. But then again, you did call yourself a "disappointment". It seems that much is true.
(F/N) definitely didn't like Ryuken's sudden lack of respect.
(F/N): Alright kid, that's enough out of you. Experience or not I can still kick your- No calm down, (F/N). You've given up your aggressive ways. Be an adult and walk away...
However as (F/N) was about to walk away, Ryuken spoke up again.
Ryuken: Are you sure you want to go that way when a sudden influx of Hollows has shown up in that direction?
(F/N): Really? But that's the direction of my house.
Ryuken: They aren't particularly strong but with your poor skill, you'll definitely struggle. I'd rather not have to waste my time saving you.
Ryuken walked past (F/N).
Ryuken: While I'm here, I'll take care of them. Usually Gemischt Quincys are the first to be dispatched to fight hollows but since I'm already here, I'll deal with them myself.
(F/N): No way. You're staying here. I'm not about to let a kid walk in there and fight monsters by himself.
Ryuken: Not only are you blind after seeing me handle a hollow by myself, but you're also deaf as you clearly didn't hear me tell you that your skills are inadequate.
(F/N): I'm not about to take this disrespect from a high schooler. Just watch me work my magic.
Ryuken: Do you even know how to use your own abilities?
(F/N): Screw it. I'll learn from trial and error.
Ryuken sighed in annoyance as they both approached the location of the hollows. From around the corner, Urahara observed the two males. On top of his shoulder was a black cat.
Urahara: Unexpected but I guess this could be a good way to see (F/N)'s mysterious power in action.
(Meanwhile)
"I thought the World of the Living would have better entertainment..."
(M/N) sat on the couch of (F/N)'s apartment, bored out of her mind.
(M/N): ...but I guess I shouldn't complain... It beats being Aizen's lab rat and the everyday fight for survival in Hueco Mundo... All I have to do is regain my strength and hop in Hueco Mundo to pull Wiz out of that hell and life couldn't get any better...
As (M/N) mumbled to herself, she was taken off guard as, for the first time since entering the World of the Living and fighting that Hollow alongside Isshin and (F/N). She felt a massive spiritual pressure. And it felt like one of a Quincy. There was a reason why (M/N) didn't stay in The World in the Living during all of her time as a run of the mill Hollow.
It was the hunting ground for both Quincies and Shinigamis. She had to look out for two preys instead of one. And she would have to always be in hiding, no matter what. It didn't help that she was an arrancar either. If the Shinigami found out she was present here, a captain of all people would come after her. The Quincies, on the other hand, saw the hollows as their enemies. Plain and Simple. And the Quincies would make sure they were dead by any means.
The combination of her weakened state and her Gigai gave (M/N) a false sense of security. She thought she was safe hiding out here.
(M/N): I was lucky enough to find a place that was safe for a week but I guess my time's up. I gotta get going.
(Meanwhile) Daichi POV
Daichi and his wife, Emi were currently on their way to (F/N)'s house.
Emi: Do you think (F/N) is doing okay by himself?
Daichi: He's a responsible adult now. I'm sure he's enjoying life without us bossing him around.
Emi: Aren't you at least a bit worried?
Daichi: Not at all. Unless he's attacked by a hollow, I'm sure he can deal with just about anything.
Emi: Ugh, I swear you two boys are terrible at showing love to one another.
Daichi: Do we? I think we get along quite fine.
Emi: A son calling his father "old man" is far from showing love.
Daichi: Some old habits are a bit hard to break it seems.
Emi: Or maybe he's just embarrassed to actually call you "dad" or "father". Maybe you could push a little harder to get him to call you either.
Daichi: What he calls me hasn't affected how well our relationship has gotten over the years.
Emi: Maybe so, but-
The car suddenly came to a stop as Daichi suddenly got serious.
Emi: What's the matter?
Daichi: Hollows... And many of them. And there's a particularly strong one in the general direction of (F/N)'s house
Emi: Is he okay?!
Daichi: I'm not sure what happened to (F/N) but what I do know is that this is an extremely strong hollow. Even stronger than a Vasto Lorde... Dear, stay put in the car. I'll head to (F/N)'s house myself and see what's going on. I'll call when everything's safe and sound. In the meantime, get in contact and see if (F/N)'s safe.
Emi: Alright. Be careful.
Daichi: I will.
Daichi got out of the car and took flight with Hirenkyaku.
(Meanwhile) Back with (F/N) and Ryuken.
The moment Ryuken and (F/N) arrived at the location of the hollows, (F/N) was immediately overwhelmed.
(F/N): I'm suddenly feeling the consequences of my actions...
Ryuken: If that's the case then leave.
(F/N): Nah... After my first encounter with these things... I can say one thing with confidence.
Ryuken: And what might that be?
(F/N): I don't know how to do that sensing thing like you do but even in the face of these things, they don't stand a chance of that monstrosity from a week ago.
Ryuken: Hmph. Well I guess all that confidence should compensate for your lack of skill.
(F/N): You know, I don't have to take this from a kid. I could just kick your ass and leave you to get eaten by these things. Nobody will find a cause of death if your soul gets taken by a spirit.
Ryuken: For someone who works for the police, you're quite adept at making threats.
(F/N): And all you're good for is running your mouth. Now get to shooting.
(F/N) then drew his pistol and started to concentrate.
(F/N): *thinking* Alright (F/N), just like you did with that first hollow. You've been practicing. Try to do that spirit thingy with your gun and you'll kill them.
(F/N): Took aim at one of the hollows that took notice of the two boys and fired. Alas, all the shot did was provoke the hollows as it phased right through them.
(F/N): Damnit...
Ryuken saved (F/N) as he shot through the hollow. Ryuken didn't bother to throw a snarky remark (F/N)'s way. Instead Ryuken put all of his focus on the hollows in front of him.
Ryuken: Hmm... eight in total... Nothing I can't handle.
Ryuken fired 3 arrows at the same time, splitting through three different hollows. A fourth hollow moved forward, but instead of running towards Ryuken, it chose to target (F/N) instead.
Ryuken: Protect yourself-
Ryuken was taken aback as he watched as (F/N) decided to run towards the hollow head on.
Ryuken: *thinking* Is he stupid? He'll be killed!
Ryuken tried to take aim at the hollow that attempted to attack (F/N), but the detective was at risk of getting hit as well.
Meanwhile (F/N)'s mind was racing as he approached the hollow.
(F/N): *thinking* If I want to pull off the same trick again, I need to put myself in the same position as last time. A life or death situation. That's the only idea I could muster up.
As (F/N) got closer and closer, (F/N) got ready to shoot.
(F/N): *thinking* I can do this. I was able to damage that last thing with this pistol... I can do it again!
In a split moment, (F/N)'s pistol flashed a green luminescence as (F/N) slid under the hollow and shot the Hollow directly in the chest. The bullet however wasn't an ordinary bullet, but a bullet made out of spiritual energy.
Ryuken stopped in his tracks as (F/N) killed the hollow in one shot.
Ryuken: *thinking* I don't understand... He doesn't know a thing about his ability but he still ran in. And that gun... it glowed for a moment. Is it special somehow?
Ryuken was taken out of his thoughts as he remembered he was in the middle of a fight. Ryuken took the time to aim at the other hollows but before he could release an arrow, two other hollows were swiftly taken care of by (F/N). Ryuken was once again astonished.
(F/N): I'll be damned if I get shown up by some disrespectful rich kid.
Now that both humans killed an even total of three hollows, all together six out of the eight hollows were defeated. The last two hollows, despite not knowing how to talk, seemed to have enough intelligence to notice that they weren't strong enough to handle the two humans in front of them.
In their attempt to run, the hollows leaped onto the roof of a nearby building.
Ryuken: Don't let them escape! Who knows who they'll attack if they get away from us!
Ryuken took flight to chase one of the hollows.
(F/N): This kid knows how to fly too? I have a lot of catching up to do...
(F/N) took a gamble. If he couldn't fly, he'd just have to have a good enough aim to kill the hollow from a much further distance.
(F/N) steadied his aim and took a deep breath.
(F/N): I can't afford to mess this up...
(F/N) cleared his mind and focused on just himself and the getaway hollow. The young detective pulled his trigger and in a brief moment, his pistol changed forms before letting off a massive beam that tore through the sky and evaporated the hollow completely.
(F/N) stood in confusion at his own strength.
(F/N): Did... Did I shoot a laser beam...?
Ryuken, who killed the last hollow slightly before (F/N)'s last attack, stared stunned. Ryuken then made his way down towards (F/N).
Ryuken: (F/N).
(F/N): That's Mr. (L/N) to you kid.
Ryuken: You claimed to not understand how to use your ability but you easily took on four hollows by yourself. How did you do it?
(F/N): I don't know the technicalities. I just thought to myself "My pride would be shattered knowing some highschooler had to do my job for me." and all of a sudden my powers started to take effect.
Ryuken: "Your job"?
(F/N): As an adult, I'm obligated to help those younger than me. Don't think too hard about it...
Ryuken wanted to comment on how simple-minded (F/N)'s reasoning was but before he could open his mouth, he heard a voice call out to him.
"Ryu! There you are!"
The two boys turned around and saw Masaki running towards them, with Kanae not far behind.
Masaki: Ryu, have you taken out the hollows already? Weren't you the one scolding me about how I should leave killiing hollows to the Gemischt Quincies not too long ago?
Ryuken: I just so happened to be in the area at the time of their appearance. It would have been unwise to just leave them be just because I'm an Echt Quincy.
Kanae: I'm just glad you're safe, master Ryuken.
Ryuken: I wasn't alone, so no need to worry about my safety.
It was then that the two girls noticed (F/N)'s presence. Masaki immediately recognized him.
Masaki: *gasp* You're the detective from last week!
(F/N): Hm? Yeah that's me. You're that Masaki girl.
Masaki: Don't tell me you forgot my full name already.
(F/N): I at least remembered your first name. Calling me "the detective" implies you don't remember my name either.
Masaki: He he... I guess you caught me red handed.
(F/N) then turned to Kanae.
(F/N): The kid really is rich if he has a maid as well. What's your name?
Kanae: O-oh! I'm Kanae Katagiri, a Gemischt Quincy. It's nice to meet you Mr...?
(F/N): (F/N) (L/N).
The last name took Kanae by surprise.
Kanae: Master Ryuken-
Ryuken: I know. He must be related to the last remaining member of the (L/N) clan.
(F/N): Why do you guys sound like you belong to some secret organization?
Ryuken: Tell me, (F/N) (L/N). Do you know a man by the name of Daichi (L/N)?
(F/N): I'm starting to lose my trust in you again. Where are you getting this information?
Ryuken: Your ignorance of your own family is concerning. Allow me to start from the beginning. Quincies are spiritually aware humans that fight the hollows. We have the ability to use the reishi in the area to create weapons for that purpose. Quincies are located all over the world but here in Japan, there are few pure blooded Quincy families. I'm a part of the Ishida family. Masaki here is from the Kurosaki family and you have the last name of the (L/N) family. All three of the families mentioned are full blooded Quincy families, but to make things simple, you can call them Echt Quincies. Are you following so far?
(F/N): Yeah...
Ryuken: In recent years, the Echt Quincy families have been dying out. Masaki here is the only member of the Kurosaki family left. The same goes for Daichi (L/N)... or so I thought. So that's where we currently stand. (F/N) (L/N), what exactly are you? Are you a Gemischt Quincy? Did Daichi (L/N) make a groundbreaking discovery in terms of increasing a Quincy's immunity to Hollows? What exactly is your relationship to him? Nobody has heard of another (L/N) member in years.
(F/N): Alright calm down... Let me get this out of the way right now. I'm not a Quincy.
The three Quincies weren't expecting (F/N)'s answer.
Ryuken: Then are you saying it's a coincidence that you have that last name?
(F/N): No, Daichi (L/N) is my father. He adopted me. Nothing more. Nothing less. Up until last week, I was just a normal guy.
Ryuken simply muttered to himself.
Ryuken: *mutter* What in the world does (L/N) have planned for his family's future?
The conversation was interrupted when (F/N) got a call on his phone. Checking the caller ID, (F/N) didn't hesitate for one second when he saw it came from his mother.
(F/N): Hey mom, I might run a bit late so I'm sorry if you guys are already-
Emi: Oh thank goodness you're alright! I thought you were in trouble...
(F/N): Huh? Mom, is everything okay?
Emi: Your father said you were in danger so he went ahead to find you.
(F/N) was confused at the news. (F/N) knew his father was the kind of guy to let him fight his own battles. But after fighting hollows and the recent news about his father that he received from Ryuken, (F/N) was starting to put the pieces together.
(F/N): Mom, be honest with me... What is dad hiding from me?
Emi: What? What do you mean?
(F/N): Dad tells you everything, so I know that you know the truth also. Dad can see spirits can he? Tell him I'm safe. I fought them off myself so don't worry about me.
Emi: You... fought those things off? (F/N) please tell me again that you're safe.
(F/N): Mom, please... I'm safe. Not a scratch on me. Now please tell dad not to come, I already handled the hollows near the hospital.
Emi: Hospital? (F/N), your father noticed a hollow at your house. He thought you would've been in trouble and went to your house by himself.
...
...
...
(F/N): Mom, call dad right now and tell him not to attack the Hollow there!
Emi: W-what? But aren't they-
(F/N): (M/N) can be trusted, just get in contact as best as you can. I'm on my way home right now! Tell dad that whatever he does, don't hurt her!
Emi: But-
(F/N) hung up abruptly as he turned to Ryuken.
(F/N): You three can get home safely I assume? You guys have super powers so I trust that you're capable of keeping yourselves safe. I gotta go.
(F/N) didn't wait for an answer as he hurried on his way home. Ryuken pondered for a bit before following (F/N).
Kanae: M-master Ryuken? Where are you going?
Ryuken: I'm curious about Daichi (L/N) so I'm going to see what's going on. Besides, you heard the conversation. A hollow is apparently residing with (F/N) (L/N). This may lead to an answer about who or what he really is.
Masaki: The Hollow might be that woman who helped (F/N) and that shinigami captain fought off that other hollow last week. Perhaps she stuck around (F/N) afterward.
Ryuken: Whatever the case may be. We can see how a powerful Qunicy fight against a formidable opponent.
Ryuken continued to give chase as he attempted to catch up to (F/N).
To be continued.
We now know how Ryuken and (F/N) actually met. During the very first backstory for (F/N), he only met (M/N), Isshin, and Masaki. Looking back on this chapter, this almost feels like a mirror of when Ichigo and (Y/N) first meet Uryu. Wasn't what I was going for but makes it all the more poetic.
This chapter also shows a lot of (F/N)'s personality differences from the past until present. As kid, he was very bitter and full of anger while a young adult (F/N) holds his tongue and tries not to lash out anger after a few taunts and insult. As we know now, no insult that Ryuken throws (F/N)'s way ever phases him. If anything, it's (F/N) that gets under his skin at times.
Also Ryuken finally tells (F/N) the information that he needed to know about Quincies. As a race that's trying to preserve its pure blooded members, Ryuken is confused why Daichi resorted to adopting. To get answers to these questions, Ryuken follows (F/N) with Masaki and Kanae not too far behind.
And finally, Daichi going off to battle (M/N). Because (F/N) doesn't know Bringer's Light nor knows how to sense spiritual energy at this point, he's late to the jump and now has to rush home to prevent a fight from breaking out.
With that out of the way... What if question of the chapter (haven't done this in a while)
If (Y/N) got a fullbring, what do you think his ability would be?
