Sophia’s POV
My alarm went off for the umpteenth time in ten minutes and I turned around on the bed, groaning tiredly and gritting my teeth as my hands searched for the clock. I hit snooze instantly and yawned, wanting to go back to bed when I realized with a frown that today, classes were starting again and I couldn’t afford to miss any classes.
I ran my hands through my hair as the alarm rang again and I turned it off this time then I sat up on my bed. I wasn’t in the mood of going to school but I didn’t have much choice. Missing classes would only mean that I was going to end up failing those classes and I wasn’t ready for that yet. I needed to keep my clean records.
I yawned and then covered my mouth before getting up from the bed and walking sluggishly to my closet. It was just twelve minutes past six and I was sure Jenny was still I her bed having her beauty sleep while I was the one awake, getting ready and will still go down to make breakfast for us.
I wished I was as confident and relaxed as she was. The fact that she never bothered herself with overthinking that missing classes will lead to her failure never failed to amaze me.
I picked out the clothes I wanted to wear today and threw them on the bed. It was a pair of jeans and a shirt. I went to my shoe rack and picked out a sneaker that went well with it then I rushed into the bathroom. I still had to spend hours attending to my hair. I got into the bathtub and started with taking care of my hair as gently as I could and after being sure that my hair was soft and untangled, I had my bath and then brushed my teeth before I left the bathroom to style my hair and finally wear my clothes.
After wearing my clothes, I went downstairs, hoping to at least see Jenny sitting downstairs but of course, that didn’t happen. It only meant one thing, she was still asleep.
I dropped my bag on the couch and then went back up the stairs to her room and knocked on her door once. There was a mumbled reply and I rolled my eyes before pushing her door open. As I expected, she was still cuddled up beneath her blanket and sleeping soundly.
I walked to her and tapped her gently. “Wake up,” I told her but she pushed my hand away, going back to sleep and turning her back on me.
“Jenny!”
“Leave me alone,” she mumbled, turning around on the bed. “I don’t get why you’re waking me up this early in the morning.”
“Classes start today, have you forgotten?” I asked, raising a brow. There was an high chance that she never knew that classes were starting today.
“Really? We’ll just go tomorrow,” she answered, shrugging slightly before closing her eyes again. I shook my head firmly.
“Not this time. Get up and let’s go,” I insisted.
“I don’t know why you’re eager to go to class today. It’s not like Ian is there, is it?” She asked and then opened her eyes again. “Are they back? Didn’t they say they were going to spend a few weeks or months there?”
“He’s not back yet, Jenny. Not that I know of,” I replied, my shoulders dropping. I haven’t even heard from him since they all left last week and it bothered me but I wasn’t sure there was anyway I could get through to them so I wasn’t going to try. Plus I didn’t want to distract him or get him worried by reach out to him so he will abandon all his work and come to me. That wasn’t nice.
“So why are you rushing to class? Is there another man that I don’t know of?” She asked and I frowned at her.
“Why would you even insinuate that?” I asked, raising a brow at her.
“Sorry sorry, I shouldn’t have done that,” she answered, sitting up on the bed and rubbing her face. “Are you sure there isn’t any way that we can skip school?”
“No, there isn’t,” I answered firmly, shaking my head. “Now get your lazy ass off and meet me downstairs when you’re done. And please hurry up. I won’t let you be the reason why I’m late.”
“It’s barely 7am. We still have time!” She argued and I shook my head.
“It’s almost eight, check your time,” I answered flatly and began to make my way out of her room.
**
It took Jenny two hours to get ready and meet me downstairs. I used those two hours to cook our breakfast and pace around the house restlessly.
When she was down, I shot her a glare and passed her food to her in a take-away. She frowned. “This is a joke, right?” She demanded and I pressed my lips together, shaking my head at her.
“It’s a joke, isn’t it?” She demanded once again and I shook my head still. It wasn’t.
“How am I supposed to eat? I’m the one driving to school,” she exclaimed. I shrugged.
“You can always eat while driving or something like that,” I answered her.
“I’m not supposed to be eating while driving. There could be an accident because I’m not focused!” She snapped. “We could get hurt!”
“I can’t,” I answered her, a smile slowly spreading on my lips and she veered back.
“What the fuck?!” She snapped, going pale. The smile slipped from my face instantly.
“What happened?” I asked and she said nothing, shaking her head. I could tell her whole mood had been ruined, probably by something I did. Or maybe what I said.
“You know what?” She murmured. “You’re going sit and wait for me to eat finish. And if you can’t wait then you can find your way to school. I’m not going to let you boss me around because you’re…what you are.”
I decided to not press the issue and I sat down instead, waiting for her to get done so we could leave. I bit my lip, wondering how much I had changed since I had turned into a vampire. Was I really bossy? Was I creeping her out unconsciously?
I gulped. Was I pushing her away with my words or actions?
“I’m sorry,” I murmured and she paused and dropped her spoon, raising her head to look at me.
“What for?” She asked with a raised eyebrow.
“For what I said when you talked about accidents,” I explained. “That was mean and insensitive. And I’m sorry.”
“It’s cool,” she answered, brushing it off. “I know you were joking.”
“At the expense of your life,” I said, feeling guilty. She shook her head.
“It’s cool really,” she answered dismissively. I knew she didn’t want to talk about it anymore. I decided not to push either.
History class was weird. Ian wasn’t here to teach with me us. It was a substitute teacher who looked like she hadn’t taught a day in her life and she wasn’t happy to be here.
That aside, it was very hard for me to concentrate when I could here the beating hearts of majority of the people here. There were plenty human, vulnerable for me to attack and compel to forget about what happened but I wasn’t going to do that. That was why I had a black bottle with me containing blood. Whenever I was letting my thoughts go astray, I drank from the bottle and felt refreshed.
I ran my hands through my hair and picked up my phone, unlocking the screen and going straight to Ian’s contact. I so desperately wanted to reach out to him, to talk to him. It was weird not talking to him for a week. Talking to him daily was now part of my daily routine and I didn’t like how that routine had been ruined for a week.
I missed him like hell. Fuck. I hadn’t been able to get him off my mind since last week. I sighed, scrolling away from his contact. I checked the messages that I had and the one on too was from Jenny, telling me how class was boring and the teacher was spewing shit and how much she hated me for making her come to school today.
The other was from Sarah, sending me pictures from her first day at her new school.
I hadn’t realized how much I had missed my family until I saw those pictures. I went through all the pictures there and saw that Simon was in one of them. And he was looking better than he had been the last time I had seen him.
I smiled and touched the screen of my phone. I texted her back, complementing her on how good she looked before dropping my phone and trying to focus on class.
