Sophia’s POV
I could feel the strength returning to my body and my mind getting stronger each day. The darkness that had clouded my thoughts was lifting, replaced by a sharp awareness that made everything seem more vivid. I hadn’t felt this alive in weeks, and it was relieving. It was as if I’d been underwater, struggling to breathe, and now I’d finally surfaced, gasping for air.
But with that clarity, I also realized just how dangerous our situation had become.
I sat on the couch in the living room, surrounded by the people who had become my family. Ian sat beside me, my body touching his slightly, while Jenny was on my other side, her hand resting reassuringly on my knee. Across from us, Jacob leaned against the wall, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable. Lyanna and Mike, both looking serious, completed our circle, the tension in the room almost physical.
“We need to talk about what happened,” Ian said, breaking the silence. His voice was calm, but I could hear the concern underneath. “The hunters aren’t going to stop.”
“They’ve already come too close,” Mike added, his tone grave. “They almost killed Sophia. That means they’re getting bolder, more desperate.”
I nodded, the memory of being bound and helpless still fresh in my mind. “They knew exactly where to find me,” I said, my voice low. “They knew how to weaken me. That wasn’t a random attack—they were prepared.”
“It’s like they’ve been tracking us,” Jenny said, her brow furrowed. “But how? We’ve been careful, haven’t we?”
Lyanna, who had been silent until now, leaned forward, her expression thoughtful. “It’s possible they have access to magic,” she said quietly. “There are spells that can trace supernatural beings, even vampires. If they have a witch working with them, that could explain how they’ve been able to find us.”
“Great,” Jacob muttered, running a hand through his hair. “Just what we need—more enemies.”
“Is there any way to counteract it?” Ian asked, turning to Lyanna. “Can we break the spell, or block it somehow?”
Lyanna nodded. “There are protections we can use. Wards, cloaking spells… I can set them up around the house and the places you frequent. It won’t make us invisible, but it’ll make it much harder for them to track you.”
“Do it,” Ian said without hesitation. “Whatever it takes to keep them off our trail.”
I watched Lyanna closely, appreciating the calm and confident way she spoke. Her knowledge was priceless in situations like this. Knowing she was on our side made me feel a little safer.
But there was still the matter of the hunters themselves.
“What do we know about them?” I asked, my gaze shifting to Mike. “Who are they? And why are they so determined to wipe us out?”
Mike sighed, leaning back in his chair. “Vampire hunters have been around for centuries. They see themselves as protectors of humanity, defenders against the ‘monsters’ that threaten the world. They’ve always been a problem, but they’re usually disorganized, working in small groups. This… this feels different.”
“How so?” I pressed, needing to understand the full scope of the danger we were in.
“They’re more coordinated,” he explained. “Better equipped, more informed. They knew exactly where to hit us, and they’re not acting alone. Someone’s pulling the strings, someone with resources and knowledge.”
“Do you think it could be another vampire?” Jacob asked, his tone skeptical. “Someone trying to thin out the competition?”
“It’s possible,” Ian admitted, though he didn’t sound convinced. “But it could just as easily be someone who hates vampires enough to fund a war against us. Either way, we need to be prepared.”
Lyanna’s gaze was steady as she looked at me. “You’re their main target, Sophia. They see you as a threat, maybe because of how you were turned. That makes you dangerous in their eyes.”
“I didn’t ask for this,” I said, feeling a surge of anger at the thought. “I didn’t want to be a vampire. But now that I am… I won’t let them kill me for it.”
“You won’t face them alone,” Ian said firmly, his hand finding mine and giving it a reassuring squeeze. “We’re all in this together.”
Jenny nodded in agreement, her expression determined. “We’ll fight them, whatever it takes. They’re not going to tear us apart.”
The room fell silent for a moment as we all absorbed the urgency of the situation. We were up against something bigger than any of us had anticipated, and the stakes were higher than ever. But the fact that we were making plans to fight this together made me feel better, just a little.
“What’s our plan?” I asked, breaking the silence. “How do we stop them?”
“We need information,” Ian said. “We need to find out who’s leading them, where they’re based, what their next move might be. Once we have that, we can strike.”
“And we need to be ready for anything,” Mike added. “That means more training, more preparation. We can’t afford to be caught off guard again.”
I nodded, feeling the weight of what was coming. I’d never been much of a fighter before all of this, but now I had no choice. If I wanted to survive, if I wanted to protect the people I cared about, I had to become stronger.
“I’ll do whatever it takes,” I said, my voice firm. “I won’t let them win.”
“Good,” Ian said, his eyes meeting mine with a look of approval. “We’ll start training tomorrow. We’ll focus on building your strength, your speed, your reflexes. And Lyanna, I’ll need you to help with the magical defenses.”
“Consider it done,” Lyanna replied, her tone serious. “I’ll get started on the wards tonight.”
“What about me?” Jenny asked, looking between Ian and Lyanna. “What can I do to help?”
“You’re human, Jenny,” Jacob said, his voice softer than usual. “You need to be careful. They could target you to get to us.”
“I’m not going to just sit around and do nothing,” she retorted, her eyes narrowing as she glared at him. “I’m not some damsel in distress. I want to fight too.”
“There are ways you can help,” Lyanna said, cutting off any argument. “You have a strong will, Jenny, but they’re right. You can’t be of much help. The only way you can help is taking up training with them. And I can do some defensive spells and charms that will protect you and give you an edge if you’re ever in danger.”
Jenny nodded, looking relieved to have something concrete she could do. “I’ll do it. Whatever it takes.”
We spent the next few hours discussing our strategy, laying out a plan that would help us stay one step ahead of the hunters. The conversation was intense, filled with a mix of fear and resolve. But through it all, I couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of calm.
For the first time in a long time, I wasn’t alone. I had people around me who cared, who would fight for me, just as I would fight for them. And that made me feel much better.
As the night wore on, the tension in the room slowly began to ease. We all knew what was at stake, but we also knew that we had a chance—a real chance—to survive this.
By the time we finally broke off the discussion, I felt much more better than I had when we started the conversation. The fear that had been gnawing at me was still there, but it was tempered by the knowledge that we had a plan, and we weren’t facing this threat alone.
Ian stayed by my side as the others began to leave. Jacob was taking Jenny to Ian’s house and Mike will drop Lyanna off at her house before he heads to his. I rested my head on Ian’s shoulder with a sigh.
“We’ll get through this,” he said quietly, his voice filled with promise. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“I know,” I replied, feeling a warmth spread through me at his words. “And I won’t let anything happen to you, either.”
His smile was small but genuine, a rare sight that made my heart skip a beat. “You’re stronger than you realize, Sophia. Don’t ever forget that.”
“I won’t,” I promised, feeling that strength growing inside me. “I’m ready to fight.”
He nodded, his expression serious again. “Good. Because this fight is just beginning.”
