"Protect our family members, the hell," I thought. After everything he's done, he has the audacity to order me around? Why would I listen to him? Why, just why?
Now what should I do? Sneak out? Wait-what newspaper was he talking about? He never reads the newspaper... or does he? Maybe he did.
I grabbed today's paper, flipping through the pages, my eyes scanning frantically. But there was nothing. The news he mentioned? Nowhere to be found.
So why did he stop me? If there's no danger outside, should I just sneak out? The thought of sneaking out sent a mix of anxiety and excitement coursing through my body.
But why should I sneak away? My classes at university already started, and by the time I get there, they'll be over. But if I stay here, it feels like I'm just obeying him... like a fool who does everything he says.
My frustration was reaching its peak. I've never been the obedient type, and I hate when someone tries to order me around. Why is he giving me commands like this? What am I, his servant?
"I will go out, come back safely, and it will be over before I know it," I told myself, trying to steady my nerves.
But why am I even doing this? "Just to avoid feeling inferior in front of him," my inner voice replied.
Maybe I shouldn't go through with it. Sneaking out feels like a direct disrespect in the face to Aadhav uncle. I won't let myself disrespect him like this-no way I am sneaking out just for the sake of some petty pride.
I spent the entire day holed up in my room, not stepping out for even a second. I couldn't risk running into him, and to my surprise, my mother didn't even ask for me.
When night came, I finally left my room to eat. I sat down at my usual spot, and everyone else was already there.
As I ate, I could feel someone's intense gaze on me, but I shrugged it off. Nervousness slowly crept up my spine, and I tried to push the thought aside. Then Shahmeer spoke up, grabbing everyone's attention.
"Aunty," he addressed my mother, "can I take Aina with me? My friends are having a get-together, and Anaya will be there too." He asked for her permission.
Mamma nodded.
What get-together is he talking about? And Anaya-why didn't she mention it to me? I looked up at him, my confusion clear.
He met my gaze and winked.
Okay, what's he up to? I couldn't help but smile at his tactics.
In this vast, suffocating mansion, where I feel trapped in my own thoughts, Shahmeer is the only person who somehow makes me feel lighter. He is like the comforting brother I never had, always able to make me forget the weight of everything around me, even if just for a moment.
As we quietly continued eating, the soft clink of utensils against plates filling the space, Aviyaan suddenly broke the silence.
"Aunty," he said, looking up at my mother, "when is Sharanvi coming back home?"
Mamma glanced up from her plate, clearly not expecting the question, and answered casually, "Maybe in two days."
He nodded, but I couldn't help but wonder why he was asking about Sharanvi of all people. I glanced at him, trying to gauge his expression, but he seemed completely focused on his food, eating without a care, his attention clearly not on the conversation. It made me even more curious about what was really going on.
I looked at Shahmeer and he was equally confused as me, he looked at me and raised his eyebrow and i just shrugged because i don't know the hell is happening,
After dinner, I made my way up to my room when I suddenly felt a light tug on my shoulder. I turned around to find Shanaya standing there, a cup in hand.
"Want some coffee?" she asked, extending the cup toward me. I raised an eyebrow, eyeing it curiously.
Isn't she being a little too sweet?
"No, I don't drink coffee at night," I politely declined, but she wouldn't give up.
Why is she so insistent? This doesn't feel right...
Despite my refusal, she kept pressing, urging me to take it. I hesitated, the idea of just taking the cup to get her to stop nagging crossed my mind. I reached for it, but just as my fingers brushed the edge, someone suddenly pushed me from behind. I stumbled forward, the cup slipping from my hand and crashing to the floor in a loud, messy thud.
I spun around to looked at the force, and was stunned for a moment. Why is he always coming and thrashing things to the floor,
I glanced at Shanaya, who was also looking at him, but now she wore a smug expression, while Aviyaan was completely blank. What the hell is happening?
Shanaya walked away, leaving me still trying to process everything. Absentmindedly, I started to walk too, but then a sudden pull caught me off guard. In an instant, I was slammed against the wall.
"What are yo-," Before I could finish, he pressed his palm over my mouth, cutting me off.
How dare he?
I yanked his hand away and struggled to break free.
"Get off," I hissed, my nerves tightening from the sheer audacity of his actions.
I looked up into his eyes. His eyes-there was something different in them today, some kind of emotion I couldn't place, like they were yearning for something, like he wanted to tell me something, but couldn't.
"Why did you do this?," The question slipped from my lips before I even realized it.
"Huh?" He looked completely dumbfounded.
"Why did you break your promise, A-Avi?," I stuttered at the end, despite my best efforts to stay composed. No matter how strong I was around others, this man had a way of stripping me bare, making it impossible to hide my feelings, even though I desperately wanted to.
He seemed to understand the weight of my question, his gaze shifting as he locked eyes with me. His eyes... they were saying more than his words ever could.
"Some promises," he said quietly, his voice steady but heavy, "are meant to be broken, Elaina."
My heart ached. His words didn't match the emotion I saw in his eyes. Those eyes-so full of something deeper, something unspoken-were telling a story his mouth was not able to confess.
He walked away, but not before casting one last glance in my direction. I saw the helplessness in his eyes, and it struck me deep.
The ache in my heart grew stronger, but I tried to shrug it off, pushing the feeling aside. Taking a deep breath, I made my way to my room, but the question kept circling in my mind-why had I seen that helplessness in his eyes? I couldn't quite decipher it.
I lay on my bed, trying to silence the storm of thoughts that only seemed to make things worse. The thought of him with someone else suffocated me, and then there was the reminder-his wife was pregnant.
I sighed, closing my eyes, hoping for some relief. Soon enough, sleep claimed me.
When I woke up, it was my usual time. I went through my morning routine, then walked downstairs to have breakfast. After greeting everyone with a polite "good morning," I took my usual seat and started eating.
It was Sunday, meaning I had no plans to keep myself distracted from the unwavering pain. My mind wandered, until suddenly, I remembered-today I was supposed to go out with Shahmeer.
I had just started my breakfast when we all heard a loud voice from the living room.
"I'm homeee!"
She's back. I jumped up and ran towards the living room, a smile spreading across my face on its own.
"Anvi!" I rushed to her and pulled her into a tight hug. "I missed you."
"I missed you too," she replied, pulling away from the hug. Her eyes drifted behind me, and her lips broke into a wide smile.
"Bhai!," She ran to hug him, and he embraced her in return.
"How have you been?,"she asked eagerly.
"I'm good. You?" he replied.
"We are also here, Sharare," Shahmeer playfully remarked, and she snickered, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah, yeah," she said, walking over to him and giving him a hug.
She made her way around the room, greeting everyone. But when she stood up after touching Shreya Aunty's feet, she suddenly stopped and flinched.
"Oh my God, you scared me!," she said, placing her hand on her chest. "Who are you, miss?,"
She stared at Shanaya with a confused expression, then continued,
"Okay, Cut that. But tell me What have you done to your face? Your cheeks look so stiff, and your lips-oh my God! Not to sound rude, but you look exactly like some cartoon character. That's why I flinched when I saw you."
I glanced at Shahmeer, who was clearly trying not to laugh, and Aviyaan, who stood there, blank-faced.
I turned back to look at Shanaya. Her face was a mix of shock and anger, and I could tell she was on the verge of bursting out in anger. At that moment, I seriously wanted to laugh, but I held it in.
Sharanvi, however, wasn't holding back. "Why are you not speaking?" she said, her tone full of curiosity. "Did you spend money on your tongue too? Did you get a surgery on that as well?,"
By the end of her sentence, it was as if she genuinely wanted to know.
"I'm Shanaya, Aviyaan's wife," she introduced herself, and though it stung, I had to accept the reality.
"Woah, woah," Sharanvi spun around to glance at Aviyaan, her face a mixture of surprise and shock, as if she hadn't expected this.
"So, you mean to say you married Aviyaan bhai? The same Aviyaan who pushed every girl away? He married you?," she asked, folding her arms across her chest. Shanaya nodded.
Sharanvi turned toward Aviyaan, her gaze sharp. "Bhai, you married her? What happened to your taste in girls?" She shook her head in disapproval. "And she's horrible," she whispered the last part.
Shahmeer coughed trying to cover his laughing,
"Excuse me, miss. You can't just say whatever you want," Shanaya snapped back.
Sharanvi tsked. "Don't talk so much. Your face will get wrinkled from how stiff it is."
"Sharanvi, she is my wife," Aviyaan said firmly, stepping in to introduce her.
"Okay, fine," Sharanvi said with a dismissive shrug. "But let me make one thing very clear: she can be Bhai's wife, but don't expect me to call her Bhabhi or respect her like one. I'll respect her as a human, but not as a bhabhi." She turned to Shanaya. "In short, I do not accept you as my brother's wife." Her words were sharp, and the atmosphere in the room grew heavy.
"Alright, no more drama," Sharanvi said, rolling her eyes. "I'm hungry, and I need something to eat. Mama!" She walked toward the kitchen.
We all silently made our way to the dining table for breakfast.
