"Mama, Nani was saying that some aunty wants to come for Elaina's alliance," Sharanvi's words caught me off guard, making me choke as I tried to regain my composure. Meanwhile, she sat calmly in her chair, staring at something-or perhaps someone. She squinted her eyes at Aviyaan, waiting for a response, but he remained unfazed. Of course, why would he react?
"Really?" Mama asked, sounding genuinely interested.
Sharanvi nodded eagerly.
At that moment, I seriously wanted to smack her. She caught my gaze and sensed the tension, but didn't flinch. I shot her a glare, but she just ignored it.
Letting out a sigh, I went back to eating my breakfast while they kept talking about the boy.
"He seems like a good guy to me," Shanaya said, her voice unusually invested in the conversation. I lifted my gaze to meet hers, noticing she was a little too into it.
Sharanvi tilted her head to the side and flashed a mischievous smirk-one of those playful smirks that made me brace myself for something ridiculous.
"I didn't realize you were part of this conversation," she said with a tight-lipped smile, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "My bad."
Shanaya's face flushed crimson at the unexpected jab. But one thing she had quickly learned about Sharanvi was that the girl never held back. If Sharanvi had something to say, she would say it-no matter what. Shanaya would have to brace herself, because when Sharanvi decided to speak her mind, no one was spared.
Aviyaan cleared his throat, drawing attention towards him. "I was thinking we should all go out for a family dinner, it will give everyone a chance to get to know Shanaya better," he suggested, his voice trying to sound casual but clearly a little tense.
Sharanvi couldn't hold back a snicker. "What family?" she shot back, her voice laced with sarcasm. "Oh, so now we are his family?" She raised an eyebrow, giving Aviyaan a mocking smile.
"Let me remind you, Aviyaan bhai, that we are the same family you did not even tell about your marriage." She shook her head in exaggerated disbelief.
Sharanvi was the kind of person who could speak her mind without a second thought, and no one would stop her. Not because she was rude-though sometimes she could be-but because she had mastered the art of speaking the truth with such audacity that no one could respond without feeling a little guilty. And, of course, she was the youngest in the family, so she got away with pretty much everything.
Perks of being the youngest in the family.
"Sharanvi," Aviyaan sighed, exasperated.
"Don't even sigh in front of me, Bhaiya," she shot back with a tight-lipped smile.
"You've got no right to sigh in front of anyone after what you did." Her words were sharp, her eyes were fixed on him
Aadhav uncle, sensing the building tension, clapped his hands and stood up. "Alright, fine. We'll arrange the dinner and this girl," he said, gesturing toward Shanaya, "needs to tell us everything about herself." He gave Shanaya a pointed look before walking out of the dining room.
I shifted my gaze to Sharanvi, who was glaring at him, her eyes practically shooting daggers in his direction.
I stood up to leave, but just as I turned, I heard Sharanvi's voice again.
"What do you even want now, Aviyaan Bhaiya?" she said, her voice dripping with disappointment. She brushed past him without a second glance, her irritation obvious.
I sighed, So much was happening in our lives. It felt like things were spiraling out of control, but I wasn't sure whether it was for better or for worse.
I entered my room, and for the first time, the mansion felt... different. It used to be so alive, bursting with energy and laughter. Now, it was as if the walls themselves had swallowed every sound. The silence was suffocating, a heavy, tangible presence that clung to every corner, making the place feel more like a graveyard than a home.
I plopped down on the bed, savoring the memories of the past-of when we were happy, together. The thought lingered in my mind, heavy with nostalgia. Slowly, I stood up and made my way to the bathroom, trying to shake off the overwhelming feeling. After finishing up, I stepped out, only to be greeted by Sharanvi.
"Hi," she smiled warmly at me. I returned the smile, though it didn't quite reach my eyes.
"So... are you okay?" she asked, her gaze searching mine. I nodded, not trusting myself to say anything more.
She paused for a moment, her expression turning serious. "You know, Aina, I just have this feeling that there's something Aviyaan bhai wants to say. I can almost sense it."
I hummed in response, lost in thought. Just then, Shahmeer entered the room, his presence cutting through the tension.
"Aina, get ready. We are leaving in an hour," he said, his tone matter-of-fact. The reminder of the evening's plans hit me like a wave-I had almost forgotten that I was supposed to go with him today.
Sharanvi raised an eyebrow. "Wait, what's this? I wasn't told about this," she said, her voice full of curiosity and a hint of suspicion.
Shahmeer sighed, "If you wanna come, get ready too," he muttered, heading out of the room. Sharanvi looked at me, her confusion deepening.
I shrugged!
After I was ready, Sharanvi and I headed outside, making our way toward Shahmeer's car, where he was already waiting. He had mentioned a get-together at a club, so I dressed accordingly-a black, long-sleeve dress that reached my calves, with a daring slit up the side. Sharanvi, on the other hand, wore black shirt paired with denim, a look that was more casual but still edgy.
As we approached the car, the weight of the evening ahead hung heavily in the air.
"Well, well, that was rude of you," Sharanvi said, trailing off. "That's not how you invite someone to your party!" she added, exasperated.
Shahmeer just laughed.
"Don't laugh!" Sharanvi shot him a glare, but Shahmeer, being Shahmeer, only laughed harder, clearly enjoying her frustration.
"By the way, where are we going?" Sharanvi asked, and I turned to Shahmeer, waiting for an answer.
"As I said, we're going to the party," Shahmeer replied casually.
We arrived at the club, the pulsating music already spilling out onto the street. The neon lights were blazing, and the place was packed with people dancing, their energy electric. We followed Shahmeer inside, weaving through the crowd, until we reached a cozy corner where his friends were gathered. Anaya was also there, sitting with them.
"Hello, guys!" Shahmeer greeted loudly, making his presence known. We settled onto a plush sofa.
Everyone greeted Shahmeer and me warmly. I was familiar with his friends, who always treated me like a sister. I felt completely at ease around them.
But as I looked around, I noticed that Sharanvi was nowhere to be found. I looked back at Shahmeer, slightly puzzled.
"Where did Sharanvi go?" I asked, confusion creeping into my voice.
"I don't know," he shrugged, his attention already back on the group.
I stood up, telling Shahmeer "I'd be back", and began to search for her. I weaved through the crowd, scanning the room. Finally, I spotted her standing still in the midst of all the chaos, her eyes locked on something across the room.
I followed her gaze.
There was a man standing in the corner, sipping wine alone. Intrigued, I walked over to Sharanvi and shook her gently.
She turned to look at me, a small smile forming on her lips.
"Elaina," she said, smiling brightly, before gliding past me toward Shahmeer.
The night continued to unfold, and after a while, Shahmeer and I got up to dance. The music was infectious, and soon we were laughing, swaying with the rhythm. But then, as if out of nowhere, the song shifted, and suddenly, I was swept into the arms of a stranger.
I looked up, and to my surprise, it was Tarun.
I smiled at him, and he returned the grin as we seamlessly continued dancing. Tarun had always been the gentleman type, never making me feel uncomfortable or awkward. His presence was easy, the kind that put you at ease without a second thought.
As we danced, Tarun cracked a joke that had me laughing out loud. But before I could catch my breath, I was suddenly yanked away from him. The abrupt movement caught me off guard, and in an attempt to regain my balance, my hands landed squarely on someone's shoulder.
I looked up, and for a moment, my breath caught up in my throat. Just as I was about to question him, he pressed his index finger to my lips, his eyes urging me to stay silent.
What is he doing here? His behavior is suspicious-he can't do this to me. Just as I am trying to move on, he's here, muddling everything. And he's married! He shouldn't be this close to me. Speaking of closeness, we are almost touching; I can feel his breath against my forehead as we dance together. I lower my gaze but can sense his unwavering stare.
I scan the room, searching for Shahmeer and Anaya, and soon spot them chatting in a corner. I try to find Sharanvi but come up empty. Where did she go?
I look back up at him, and our eyes lock. I've always loved his eyes-so deep, like home to me. Whenever life got heavy, I could lose myself in them, and all my problems would fade. But now those eyes, that entire person, belong to someone else.
I attempt to pull away, but his grip tightens. A gasp slips from my lips as his hands trail up my back, sending a shiver racing down my spine.
I push him away. He is not mine-this is a reminder to keep my distance, a reminder not to let my emotions overpower me.
I walk away, anger and confusion swirling inside me. I hate him; I hate him! I didn't even realize tears were streaming down my face. I needed to find someone, anyone. Just then, my gaze landed on Sharanvi. She was standing with that guy from earlier.
"You should feel lucky that I like you," she said, fixing her imaginary collar.
The guy shot her a glance, a hint of a smile flickering on his face before he transformed into a stoic expression and walked away, not before whispering, "Idiot."
Sharanvi scoffed. "That handsome brat," she muttered before finally noticing me.
"Oh, you're here!" she said, her smile tinged with nervousness.
I sighed, feeling the weight of everything pressing down on me. There's so much happening in my life; I don't have the courage to question her about the guy.
I recounted everything that just unfolded, and by the end of it, she was practically seething with anger. "What the hell does he think he's doing? He has no right to play with your feelings like this! I may not like Shanaya, but she's his wife-how can he act like this?"
I tried to calm her down, but her fury was palpable, too intense to dissipate quickly.
Determined, she began searching for him but quickly realized he was nowhere to be found. "He's probably already gone home," she huffed, still seething.
The tension in the air buzzed between us, and I knew that this was far from over.,
