8 YEARS BACK:
With a heavy sigh, I finished packing. As much as the prospect of going abroad to pursue my career filled me with excitement, the thought of leaving my family behind gnawed at my heart, suffocating me with an ache I couldn't ignore. My mind wrestled with the bittersweet emotions, but a sudden knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts.
I opened it, and there she was-the most important person in my life, standing before me with those captivating, soul-piercing eyes. For a moment, the world seemed to pause, and all my turmoil melted away in her presence. Inviting her in, I gently closed the door behind her, my feet instinctively guiding me back to where she stood, as though drawn by some invisible thread that bound us together.
I looked at her face, her features etched with a sorrow so profound it tugged at my heart. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, and she drew in a shaky breath before finally meeting my gaze.
“Don't go,” she murmured, her voice so soft it was barely audible, yet it carried the weight of her emotions.
I reached out instinctively, cupping her cheeks in my hands, my thumbs gently brushing away the stray tear that escaped.
“Hoor, I have to,” I said tenderly, my voice laced with warmth, though it wavered slightly under the weight of the moment.
She nodded reluctantly, her lower lip trembling as she took a hesitant step closer. Without a word, she buried her face against my chest, her arms encircling my waist tightly, as if holding me there could stop time itself.
Her cheek pressed against my chest and I felt her breath, warm and uneven, as she clung to me, seeking comfort in the quiet closeness between us.
“Why do you always call me Hoor? That’s not my name,” she asked, her voice trembling, barely above a whisper.
I gazed at her, a faint smile tugging at the corners of my lips. “I’ll tell you some other time,” I replied, my tone soft yet enigmatic. Without waiting for her to press further, I wrapped my arm around her petite frame, holding her close, as if she were the anchor to my restless soul.
The next morning, I woke before dawn, completing my pending preparations in silence. With each task, a sense of inevitability settled over me. Once ready, I made my way downstairs, where the aroma of breakfast greeted me. I ate quietly, savoring every bite, knowing it might be a long time before I shared another meal with them.
When it was finally time to leave, I stood at the main door, pausing to take one last look at my family. I let my gaze linger, imprinting their faces in my mind like a precious photograph. With a deep breath, I stepped forward, touching the feet of my elders to seek their blessings.
Turning to Shahmeer, I pulled him into a firm hug, feeling the silent strength of our bond. Then I embraced Sharanvi, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. Finally, I turned to her—my Hoor.
She stood there, her gaze fixed on the floor, refusing to meet my eyes. Her nervousness only deepened the ache in my chest. Gently, I reached out, pulling her into my arms. Her small frame fit perfectly against me, as though she belonged there. I closed my eyes, inhaling her scent as though it could sustain me in the days to come. Her soft breathing was like a melody, calming the storm raging within me. For a moment, the world fell away, leaving only the two of us in that fragile, fleeting embrace.
My plane landed in Paris, and I headed straight to my apartment—everything had already been set up by my father.
Tomorrow is the big day: my first day at my dream university. I worked relentlessly to earn my place here. Yes, my father has wealth, but seeing how he and my uncle worked tirelessly to build this life has been nothing short of inspiring. Their dedication and perseverance lit a fire in me to achieve something meaningful on my own.
I didn’t want to be seen as someone simply living off my father’s success. That’s why I put in so much effort to get into this university entirely on my own—and now, I’m ready to make it all count.
I slept with a whirlwind of thoughts swirling in my head. The next morning, I got ready and headed to the university. As I entered the campus, I was immediately greeted by the bustling energy of students—walking, chatting, and laughing with one another. Despite the liveliness around me, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of loneliness. It wasn’t like I needed anyone to be with me, but seeing all these people together made me miss her. My Hoor. Memories of how we used to attend the same school flashed in my mind, and a pang of nostalgia hit me hard.
As I walked towards my class, timetable in hand, I suddenly collided with someone. Irritated, I looked up and snapped, "Are you blind or what?" The words escaped my mouth before I could even think.
The girl I bumped into simply looked at me, amused by my reaction.
Letting out a frustrated sigh, I turned to walk away, hoping to end the encounter quickly. But before I could take another step, I felt a tug on my wrist. Annoyed, I immediately yanked my hand free and turned around. “What?” I asked, my voice sharper than intended.
She raised an eyebrow, an expression of mischief playing on her face. “Oh, attitude,” she remarked with a smirk. Extending her hand for a handshake, she introduced herself, "Hello, I’m Bérénica. And you are?"
“Aviyaan,” I replied curtly, hoping to cut the interaction short. I turned to leave again, but she stopped me once more, this time placing a hand on my shoulder.
I froze. What was with her constantly touching me? Feeling my irritation boiling into anger, I shrugged her hand off and turned back to glare at her.
"Listen, girl," I began, my voice low but firm, “stay in your limits when you talk to me. You and I are strangers, and I’d really appreciate it if you kept your hands to yourself. Don’t touch me again.”
Without waiting for a response, I walked away, feeling uncomfortable and unsettled.
The rest of the day passed smoothly as I attended my classes, keeping to myself and focusing on the work. Once everything was over, I headed back to my apartment. My thoughts were heavy, and I felt the need to talk to someone who truly understood me—my family.
The moment I stepped into my apartment, I grabbed my phone and dialed home, longing to hear their voices and feel a sense of connection amidst the chaos of my first day.
After talking with my family, I felt a wave of relief wash over me, lifting the weight I didn’t even realize I’d been carrying. Later, I spoke to my hoor. Hearing her voice made me incredibly happy. We ended up talking for almost two hours, sharing everything that had happened during our day. I told her about my mundane moments, while she excitedly recounted how she had finally confronted a classmate who had been trying to exploit her talent. Her determination made me proud. Before we ended the call, she gently reminded me to rest since it was getting late on my side. I nodded, bid her goodnight, and hung up with a warm smile.
As I settled into bed, contentment embraced me. Sleep came easy, and I woke up to the sound of my alarm, ready to face the day ahead. After getting ready, I headed to the university and made my way to class. As I took my seat, I noticed the girl from the first day sitting beside me. I didn’t harbor any personal grudge against her, but something about her always gave me negative vibes. Deciding to ignore her, I focused all my attention on the lecture, determined not to let her presence distract me.
However, out of nowhere, I felt something on my thigh. Startled, I looked down to see her hand resting there. A surge of discomfort and anger shot through me. I quickly shoved her hand away and turned to glare at her, my expression was stern.
