The night came softly, wrapping the Hastinapur palace in a serene silence. The maids had settled into their respective rooms, the faint murmur of their whispers drifting into stillness. Nisha sat cross-legged on her mat, her face glowing with the warm, golden light of the oil lamp beside her. The soft flicker highlighted her delicate features, casting shadows that danced along the walls. She glanced at Adrika, who was seated on the floor, gently combing her hair, the rhythmic strokes soothing to watch.
"Kya hum jaise sadharan praja Kuru Raj Sabha mein kal jaa sakte hain?" ("Can ordinary people like us go to the Kuru royal assembly tomorrow?") Nisha asked, her voice curious, yet laced with a hint of excitement.
Adrika paused, turning to meet Nisha's gaze. Her eyes sparkled under the lamplight as she smiled. "Kyun nahi? Kal ka samahro ek samajik samahroh hai, aur raja ka chunav praja ke mangal ke liye hota hai. Toh kal Hastinapur ke sabhi nagarvasiyon ko raj samahroh dekhne ka adhikar hai" ("Why not? Tomorrow's event is a social ceremony, and the king is chosen for the well-being of the people. So, all the citizens of Hastinapur are allowed to witness the royal ceremony.")
Nisha nodded thoughtfully, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the edge of her mat. "Tum chalogi?" ("Will you come with me?") she asked, hoping to share the experience with her newfound friend.
"Haan, bilkul," ("Yes, of course,") Adrika replied warmly. "Milke chalenge." ("We'll go together.")
With that, the night embraced them in a peaceful slumber. The palace's calmness seemed to prepare itself for the excitement that the morning would bring. Nisha drifted to sleep, the thoughts of the grand event filling her dreams.
As dawn still lay hidden beneath the horizon, Nisha and Adrika woke to the soft rustle of movement around them. It was just after four in the morning. The air was crisp, and the sky a velvety shade of dark blue. The palace maids gathered, excited chatter filling the early hours as they prepared for the day ahead. The air buzzed with anticipation about the new king of Hastinapur. The maids could barely contain their enthusiasm, gossiping animatedly about the two princes, Yudhishthira and Duryodhana, each with their own opinions about who would ascend the throne.
Nisha and Adrika completed their morning chores quickly, eager for the royal event. Today was special, and it called for something more. Nisha wore a sari she had bought after borrowing five gold coins from Adrika, who had generously offered it as a gift. But Nisha, determined and stubborn, had insisted she would repay once she received her salary of a hundred gold coins per month—a testament to the wealth of Bharatvarsha, which was truly a "Sone ki Chidiya" (Golden Bird) in those times.
Standing in front of a small mirror, Nisha studied her reflection. The soft fabric of the sari hugged her frame, its light green color bringing out the warmth of her complexion. "Theek lag rahi hoon na?" ("Am I looking okay?") she asked Adrika, a little unsure.
Adrika, adjusting her earrings in the corner, glanced at her with a playful smirk. "Aise jaogi?" ("Are you going like this?")
Nisha blinked in confusion, and before she could respond, Adrika was already by her side, ready to work her magic. Like a caring elder sister, Adrika began adorning Nisha. She fastened delicate silver earrings to her ears, placed an artificial gold chain around her neck, and gently tucked fragrant flowers into her mid-length hair. The simple adornments brought a radiant charm to Nisha's look.
When Adrika stepped back, Nisha looked at herself in the mirror again, this time with a sense of quiet pride. "Thank you" she murmured, feeling the warmth of Adrika's care. They exchanged smiles, each one complimenting the other on how beautiful they looked.
"I wish I could take a photo," Nisha sighed wistfully. "We look so good."
"Photo?" Adrika asked, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Woh kya hota hai?" ("What is that?")
Nisha smiled, realizing her mistake. "Chitra... ab chalo, der ho rahi hai," ("A picture... now let's go, we're getting late,") she laughed softly, motioning towards the door.
The two of them hurried out of the room, joining the excited throng of maids and palace staff heading toward the Kuru Raj Sabha. They arrived just in time, finding themselves in the front row among the eager citizens of Hastinapur. The excitement in the air was palpable, and Nisha's heart raced as she looked around, the sheer size of the crowd overwhelming. Everyone had gathered to witness the historic moment.
As the final moments ticked by, the crowd fell silent in anticipation. One by one, the royal family began to arrive. Nisha's eyes were wide with wonder as she saw the grandeur of the royals—each one more magnificent than the last. Soon, the time for the great event had arrived.
