Classic French Toast Recipe
Ingredients:
4 large eggs1 cup whole milk1/4 cup heavy cream (optional, for richer taste)1 tablespoon granulated sugar1 teaspoon vanilla extract1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamonA pinch of salt8 slices of bread (thick slices like challah, brioche, or Texas toast work best)2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for cooking)Maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit (for serving)
Instructions:
Prepare the Custard Mixture:
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
Preheat the Pan:
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt, swirling to coat the surface.
Dip the Bread:
Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are fully coated. Allow any excess mixture to drip off before placing the bread in the skillet.
Cook the French Toast:
Place the coated bread slices in the skillet. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. You might need to add more butter to the pan between batches.
Serve:
Serve the French toast warm with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh fruit if desired.
Tips:
For extra flavor, you can add a bit of nutmeg or a splash of orange liqueur to the custard mixture. To keep the French toast warm while you cook the rest, place the cooked slices on a baking sheet in a 200°F (93°C) oven.
