AEGIS'S P.O.V
“Combatants, Please step forward!” the referee’s voice rang loud and clear.
I stepped into the arena slowly and deliberatey. Mikeal swaggered in across me with a wide, arrogant smirk. The crowd roared excitedly amidst the tension of the environment.
“This is a fight for the position of Alpha,” the referee announced. “This battle ends only in death or submission. Fighters, are you ready?”
I nodded once silently. I'll do all it takes to not kill the boy. I might not like him but no one deserves to die for their foolishness. I did and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
Mikeal sneered, flexing his muscles for the crowd. A few girls shrieked and screamed but the older ones were quiet, understanding the consequence of electing Mikeal as Alpha.“I was born ready.”
The referee raised his hand. “Begin!” Mikeal lunged at me without any hesitation, his fists swinging wildly. I sidestepped him easily, making him stumble forward. “Running already, huh?” he taunted, spinning back around. “Guess that’s what weak little girls do.”
I didn’t respond. As much as I itched to hit him, I maintained my calm facade. I had no intention of letting him control this fight. He attacked again, faster this time, aiming a punch at my face. I blocked it with my forearm, the impact vibrating through my bones. His next punch came hard at my ribs, but I twisted, letting it glance off me. “Say something, you freak,” he spat, circling me like a predator. Still, I stayed quiet, my eyes locked on him.
“You’re pathetic!” he yelled, charging again. This time, he aimed low, trying to sweep my legs out from under me. I jumped back, landing lightly on my feet. He stumbled again, his frustration growing. “Fight me!” I tilted my head, my voice calm. “I am.”
His roar of anger echoed through the arena as he came at me full force. His punches were wild, sloppy, fueled by rage. I continued to block and dodge him, keeping all my movements precise.
Then, I saw it. A glint of silver in his hand. The crowd gasped as he revealed the small, curved blade, a silver ring knife. “That’s not allowed!” the referee shouted, stepping forward. “Mikeal, drop the weapon!” Mikeal ignored him and charged at me with crazed eyes.
He lunged at me, slashing with the blade. I dodged, the knife missing my face by inches. The crowd erupted in panicked roar. Alpha Brianna stood at the edge of her seat, her face pale. “Aegis, watch out!”
Mikeal grinned. “Let’s see you dodge this, you little freak.” He slashed again, and this time, the blade caught my arm. Pain flared, but I didn’t flinch. The silver burned, but I refused to let him see it. Instead, I smiled. His smirk faltered. “What the hell?” I straightened, ignoring the blood dripping down my arm. “Is that all you’ve got?”
A crazed, out of my mind smile appeared on my face as I felt it awaken. And soon enough I'd lost control of my own body. I finally saw red.
See at first I wasn't going to do anything to him. But the damned crazy wolf just used a blade in a no weapon fight. He started this himself and I'm just going to assist him to end it. HE'S GOING DOWN.
Just like the Hunters did.
His eyes widened as I took a step toward him. He slashed again, aiming for my chest, but I caught his wrist mid-swing. His strength was nothing compared to mine. I twisted, forcing him to drop the knife.
“You’re cheating,” I laughed lowly. “And still losing.” He roared in frustration, throwing a punch with his free hand. I caught it, my grip crushing his knuckles. Something inside me snapped. The calm broke, replaced by my very own something darker.
I threw him to the ground and my body moved on instinct. He scrambled back, his eyes wide with fear. “What the hell are you?” I didn’t answer. I lunged, my fist slamming into his jaw. He cried out, blood spraying from his mouth. “Stop!” he screamed, trying to crawl away. “I concede! Please I concede!” I grabbed him by the throat, pinning him to the ground. “I said I concede!” he choked out, his voice desperate. I leaned closer, my voice cold and unfamiliar. “A fight for Alpha ends in death.”
“No, no, no,” he whimpered, thrashing under me. “You’re insane! Heelppp! She's lost her mind!” He screamed as my claws extended, his panic filling the arena. The crowd was silent and held as they watched. I tore through his chest, my claws slicing with precision. His screams cut off abruptly as I gripped his spine, ripping it free. Blood splattered across my face, the metallic scent filling my nose.
It was over.
The crowd erupted with deafening cheers. The referee stepped forward in a shaking and proud voice.
“The Winner and New Alpha is Aegis! All Hail The New Alpha!” They roared even louder while I stood there breathing heavily with bloody dripping hands. The adrenaline had faded and now I'm just empty.
"I really appreciate it but I'm not interested in the position,” I said flatly. The crowd fell silent, each of their faces mirroring each other in shock. An elder stepped forward gbravel. “Miss Aegis, may I be permitted to speak?” I nodded reluctantly. He bowed his head. “ I think I speak for everyone in the pack when I say, we would be honored to be led by you. Your strength, your courage----you are exactly what this pack needs. Please, we beg you, accept this role.”
The crowd began to kneel, one by one, their heads bowing to me. It was just like before when Noah and his friends had done it. Alpha Brianna stepped forward, her eyes shining with pride. “Their wolves have chosen you, Aegis. This is not something you can refuse.”
I looked at the crowd, at their bowed heads, their submission. My chest tightened. “I don’t want this,” I whispered. “You don’t have to want it,” Brianna said gently. “But you’re what they need.”
The elder in front of me knelt before me, his voice breaking. “Please, Alpha.”
I closed my eyes as I thought about it . I might not deserve it but this people wanted me. This is my second chance and by the goddess I'll protect this people. When I opened my eyes, I took a deep breath and stepped forward.
“I accept,” I decided. The crowd roared, their cheers echoing through the arena. They bowed their heads lower, their loyalty undeniable. Brianna smiled and rested a thankful hand on my shoulder. “ Thank you,Aegis.”
And that was how I went from Aegis the rejected to Alpha Aegis.
