"It is love!" Eloise whined in the back room as she threw away a few stems Tony had just trimmed.

"It really isn't," was the boy's exasperated response.

"They've been texting me basically non-stop ever since the varsity list came out."

"They texted you once and that's because they're the cheer captain and they needed you to confirm that you accepted their offer. Let's be honest with ourselves, bitch."

"You can't just call a woman a bitch, bitch! Miss (Y/n), it's love right?!"

You could only laugh from the front as you finished a transaction with a taken aback customer, extremely amused by your employees' antics. You sent Angel, who was standing beside the counter with you, a disbelieving and wry look, and he returned it with a small snort.

It had been a few days since you'd become something of an online sensation, and while you didn't have nearly a thousand people crowding the street anymore, you were still met with a good amount of extremely busy waves. That's why you started having two employees work alongside you rather than the usual one, the increased revenue from the extra sales making that a possibility financially. You were honestly rather thankful, as you relished getting to spend time with your two favorite kids together rather than only getting to spend time with them one-on-one like before. They had just returned from their vacation as well, so their sunburnt faces were sights for sore eyes.

"Sorry, El- I'm not the one for relationship advice," you called out to the back room once the customer had taken off. "But I stand with delusional women! So I say we call it love."

Tony groaned as he came out to the front, placing his recently trimmed blooms in their designated areas. "Just because you have a freak himbo harem beating each other up for you and following you around like a lost dog-" he sent a glare towards a suddenly bashful Angel "-it certainly doesn't mean that El does. You're being an enabler, Miss (Y/n)."

"What the hell, bitch?" Eloise bounded after him, whacking him upside the head with a stray flower. "Talking about her being an 'enabler' as if that's not one of those buzzwords you've learned from watching online tea channels. We've had it with the pseudo-intellectualism, pal."

Tony spun around to face her indignantly. "No, bitch- I've learned it from being surrounded by all you fu-"

"-okayyyyy, both of you." You sent them each a disapproving glare after surveying the store- luckily empty for once, meaning no potential customers had witnessed their dramatics. "No calling each other bitches, no shutting down Eloise's delusions, and no making fun of Tony for being chronically online. Also, I'd like to clarify for the millionth time: I don't have a harem."

"She doesn't have a harem!" Angel parroted behind you with a humph. "She doesn't want a man, and no man wants her! All she needs are friends!"

You turned to eye him skeptically, not loving how he framed the second part, but he simply sent you a sheepish smile and you could only sigh and turn back around. "Okay El, there's no customers so the floor is yours. What's going on with you and this cheer captain?"

The girl giggled maniacally at your interest in her most recent romantic plight (she had approximately two a week, something you often expressed slight concern about), and she skipped to the counter where she propped up her head on her elbows, sighing dreamily. Tony followed her reluctantly, sending you a disappointed glance for entertaining the pink-haired fiend.

"Okay! So basically remember how I had cheer tryouts a couple weeks ago?"

"Mhm."

"Well over vacation I found out I made it- not a huge surprise but a win is a win! So I got this text from Audra- the captain- and they were all like- wait! Lemme just pull up the text!" She reached into her back pocket and retrieved her phone to begin searching frantically for the text.

You turned to check in with the unusually quiet Angel beside you as you waited, who was already gazing at you softly. His smile widened at the eye contact and you ruffled his hair before Tony caught your attention on the other side of the counter.

"Lower your expectations to zero, Miss (Y/n)..." he sighed, voice so solemn and exasperated you had to bite back a tickled grin.

Eloise shoved her phone in your face excitedly, waving it about too frantically for you to read anything. "Look! They're into me, yeah?"

You snatched the phone from her hand and held it so you and Angel could both read it. He took the opportunity to wrap and arm around your middle and rest his head on your shoulder, and you peered at him through the corner of your eye quizzically. You had asked him to try to keep it professional during work hours- meaning less touching. "Still on the clock, sunshine."

"Yeah, I know. I just- I wanted to uh... read better?" he replied sheepishly.

"That was supposed to be me," Tony muttered.

You rolled your eyes at both of them and simply held the phone back up in front of you and Angel. The text was dated to last week.

You furrowed your brows and pursed your lips as you read, trying to find a kind way to say 'you did way too much for someone who sent you a copy-and-paste message also sent to like thirty other people.'

"She did way too much for someone who sent her a copy and paste message also sent to like thirty other people." Tony voiced. Well! That was certainly one way to do it. "I don't get how you grow these feelings so quickly for so many people a week. I've never met anyone who's liked people or dated as much as you, but I fear the only relationship you should actually be pursuing is one with a mental health professional. And maybe a therapist would actually respond."

Eloise glowered at her friend before turning brightly to you and your bodyguard. "Beautiful people like me are prone to fall in love easily! I bet you date a ton too, right, Angel?"

You winced at the question, not wanting to bring up a potentially sore subject around Angel. You hadn't spoken to him about relationships since that day that you both deduced he didn't like you romantically, so you didn't know how he had processed his newfound realization that his countless exes were all using him. You turned to him and chewed on your bottom lip, anxiously waiting to see how he would respond to your well-meaning employee.

He removed his head from your shoulder and simply sent her a huge grin. "Yeah, I've dated tons!"

Oh? Maybe he wasn't all that torn up over all those past assholes? Although, upon looking closely at him, his smile seemed a bit more practiced than it was genuine. He didn't seem to be in pain, but it looked almost like he still hadn't fully grasped the reality of the situation. You looked past your professionalism rule for the moment and hooked an arm around his and leaned into his side to provide silent comfort in case he needed it, and his head whipped down to you, his smile shifting to a much realer one again. Your eyes moved to Tony when you heard him groan.

"Yet you still landed on Miss (Y/n)? I will lose my mind," the teen sighed.

"No. Angel is just a friend." You looked up to him to see him sending Tony a wobbly smile.

"Right, just a friend! Well, a best friend. Right, precious?" His face turned slightly intense as he looked down at you, and for a brief moment, you felt a slight sense of unease. You brushed the feeling aside though- you probably just weren't used to people wanting to be around you this bad.

You finally smiled back at him brightly. "Yep! Definitely one of my best friends at this point."

"Boring! Nobody cares about friendship!" Tony gasped at Eloise's words, muttering a certain, recently banned curse word and earning two glares from you and the girl before she continued. "What's your relationship advice then, Angel!? Do you think that Audra is into me or what? I mean- I know they are but a second opinion can only help convince my doubters!"

"Oh, uh- well... The way you texted them actually reminds me of this one guy I was-"

"- in love with and now you guys are married and in super love?"

"No." Angel looked at her with a pitying smile before slowly continuing. "It reminds me of a guy who liked me a bit too much, looking back on it. I grew up homeschooled and kinda sheltered but I started going to in-person school my senior year! I met the guy then and he would always compliment me and he was pretty handsome and so I went out with him- he was my first partner! But, well- he was kinda fake. He didn't really treat me like a person? My parents hated him and made us break things off. He was so mad when things ended, and Mom and Dad told me he said all these horrible things about them after that just..."

As he trailed off with uncertainty, you saw something between disgust and regret flash in his eyes. He looked as though he was suppressing a grimace, and your heart cracked at the sight of the man in obvious emotional turmoil.

You were curious as to how this guy was 'crazy' and what Angel meant when he said he got 'mad', especially since you didn't have much context into exactly how his countless exes had treated him, but you didn't want your friend to keep on enduring the anguish of remembering. You squeezed his arm that you were still holding and sent him a soft, reassuring smile that seemingly drew him from whatever dark thoughts were occupying his brain.

"I'm sure you're not like him though, Eloise! His problem was that he didn't want me around for me- he wanted me because of how I made him look better!" he chirped, back to his chipper demeanor he looked back to Eloise with a bright smile.

Eloise, however, looked distraught even after he reassured her. "Angel, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to bring up such bad memories! I would never want to make someone feel that way, I swear!"

"Oh my god. Great, El! You triggered the hot hero and now he's not gonna wanna talk to me because you have no social awareness. You really are trying to ruin my life," Tony grumbled, looking equally upset.

He truly was just another hero fanboy at heart, and while he did respect Angel slightly less than at the time of their first 'meeting' for being so clingy to you, he still sought out his approval and favor. It was sweet to see how much both of the kids seemed to care about Angel and his feelings, and you hoped that their appreciation for him was felt by the man. More positive relationships were exactly what you felt he needed, even if they were with people as unhinged as your high schooler employees.

"It's okay kids!" Angel beamed, moving his arm to hook around your shoulders and pull you into his chest. "Because I met my little cutie pie here and she helped me realize I deserve better in a relationship! I deserve someone who-"

"Is Miss (Y/n)!" the younger girl interjected, much to your chagrin.

You waited for Angel to deny her suggestion, but you were met with silence. You couldn't see his face to send him a questioning glare due to the near headlock he held you in, so you spoke up in his stead. "No. Angel needs a friendship from me, not a romantic relationship. And Eloise, I think you might want to take a break from serial dating as well."

Eloise gasped, visibly bewildered by your seemingly cruel suggestion. "Do you agree, Angel? I'm not taking any advice from the only person more single than Tony..."

You and Tony shared an irked glance, uniting for once over your disbelief at the little devil stood before you both.

"Well, I mean if (Y/n) thinks that what we have is platonic then I'll trust her, but I guess sometimes I'm not entirely certain she was ri-"

Eloise cut him off with a large, impatient sigh, "No. Do you think I should take a break from dating? We've all moved on from you and Miss (Y/n) already, please."

You would disagree, because you were in fact still very much on whatever Angel was about to say. He wasn't certain you were right about what? Was he upset that you had told him that his past lovers had all just been using him? Your mind ran a thousand miles a minute trying to think of how to salvage the harm you may have dealt him but by the time you were ready to cut in the conversation had already progressed.

"-75% percent women 25% everyone else, I would say," Angel mused, "I'm not sure though, 'cause I didn't keep a list of all the people or anything! That'd be uncool, and also it would take up too much room in my notes app..."

"You're living my dream life! I think my percentage is a bit more even! I just wanna date everyone!" Eloise said excitedly. Tony stood beside her with his head in his hands, and, honestly, you were right there with him.

"Hey! So- no..." you finally cut in, looking between the two and wondering how they got there in the short amount of time you had zoned out. You removed yourself from Angel's hold. "Angel didn't actually like most of the people he dated like that, El- it's not something to aspire to. And to be honest with you, it's not fair for you to keep whipping around to all these people like their time means nothing."

You were stern, but the guilt that etched itself on her face made you soften your approach. You left Angel's side to walk around the counter and pull the girl into a tight side hug.

"Hey, you're not a supervillain for having lots of crushes and wanting to have a fun time, bud. The problem is that you aren't taking the other people's preferences into account. How many times are you asking the people you date if they're looking for something casual or serious?"

"...never," the girl admitted guiltily.

"That's the real issue, then. Maybe you just need to try defining your flings before you enter them, that way everyone feels good when it's over and you both can move on." You ruffled her hair as you released her from your arms, and noted she was smiling again. You decided to get in a final jab at her and Tony before moving on, however, wanting revenge for all their incessant teasing throughout the day. "And maybe one day you'll meet someone who you wanna settle down with! If you ask me, Tony's been giving you eyes all day today when you've talked about this Audra- he's gotta be jealous."

They both gaped at you and shared a moment of silence before entering into a slew of frenzied tangents and threats to your safety at your implications.

"How could you ever wish that upon me?! I'm never gonna settle down but you put it out into the universe so my life is actually gonna take that route and it will be your fault and if it happens I swear Miss (Y/n) I'll find you and-"

"That's actually slander and homophobic. I'm gonna send an anonymous tip to every news station in the country saying you are with Megistos and that you're with child-"

"You're cooked," Angel whispered to you teasingly.

You giggled and sent him a satisfied grin. "Worth it!"

As your day progressed, you delved further into the kids' love lives in between your huge bursts of wild fans/customers. They filled you in on their current, very attainable crushes (you could only sigh when Eloise ended up having three more in addition to Audra, and all of Tony's were heroes far too old for him) and you and Angel offered the best advice you could manage. As insane as their plights in love were and as stubborn as they were when it came to accepting any words of advice, you couldn't find it to be irritated by them at all. These kids were truly like your own siblings, and you would do anything to help them feel secure and happy in themselves.

Angel was noticeably more quiet than usual, only offering small anecdotes about his own dating life and observing. You were a bit worried for the man, as he seemed more and more strained as he spoke of his past. He was likely unraveling as he processed the true nature of so many of his past partners' feelings for him, and you could feel your own heartbreaking on his behalf. Still, as he spoke he'd occasionally send you the softest looks, so you were at least glad he seemingly found comfort in you. You felt better knowing he felt safe in your presence.

When the day was over and the kids finally departed for their homes, Angel stuck around a bit after you finished up closing.

"What's up, sunshine?" you asked, a knowing smile playing on your lips. "Your shift ends as soon as mine does, you know- you don't need to play as my bodyguard anymore. You can go home."

"(Y/n), you're teasing me, aren't you?" he whined as he clung to your body in a hug. "I wanna sleep over again! Please? You said I can't touch you much during work hours so I miss cuddling!"

You held back a laugh at how he was still just as clingy as the day you granted him access to physical touch.

Angel had been begging you to spend the night since your first sleepover, but you kept denying him. You didn't feel extremely unsafe as the nights had been extra foggy over the past few days so you weren't too concerned about anyone- insane superfans or delusional supervillains alike- being able to see into your apartment and find out where you lived. With the excessive amounts of customers and the additional employees working, as well as Angel being pinned to your side all day, however, you only had any alone time at night- so you had been sending him home.

Tonight, though, felt different. Angel was noticeably more mopey, likely due to the fact that he had been accidentally forced by the teens to dredge up painful memories of the past. You could tell he didn't want to be alone, and so you decided to sacrifice your own desires to suit his. That's what friendship was about, right? Sacrifice. And surely if you asked Angel to ever leave you alone for a bit, he would sacrifice his desires too.

So you obliged. "Fine. Upstairs we go. I'll make us something to eat quickly 'cause I am, like always, beat."

You both made your way to the apartment where you began to put a quick dish together. Angel stood watching you fondly over the kitchen counter.

"You really care about Eloise and Tony, yeah?" he inquired after a few minutes.

"Mhm. They're family to me," you answered, back facing him as you worked over your stove. "There's nothing I wouldn't do to keep them both happy and protected. I've only known El for about a year and Tony for less, but they're such a light to me and I want to help them grow into the best versions of themselves in their formative years. Kinda like what Gran Gran was to me and Sarah."

A smile tugged at your lips the more you thought about the two. They really had left such a mark on your heart, and were always teaching you to laugh at life and yourself and take things in waves. They made your job all the more enjoyable and you felt immensely grateful to them both. Sure, they'd definitely scared a good amount of customers away with their personalities and they had also messed up a good amount of arrangements, but they were indisputably irreplaceable. They were just as much a part of the store as you- or even as Gran Gran. Tears pricked at your eyes- she would have loved the two troublemakers.

"Huh. That's nice! You sure seem to have a lot of people you're really close to," Angel mused behind you. "Too bad they all seem so far away."

You looked over your shoulder at him curiously for a moment, before turning back and returning to your work. "Oh, um, how so?"

"Well- Megistos is always working and can't see you much due to the whole scandal."

He had a point there. He hadn't come in to bring you a coffee since word got out, something that used to happen at least twice a week.

"Your friend- Jamie, I think it was- is a recluse who doesn't come to see you."

Right again. James hadn't been making any effort to come visit you in person. Granted, he had been texting you quite often and trying to act normal over the phone and you had been dry to him, but that was in response to his behavior. So he was admittedly both emotionally and physically distant.

"Sarah and Benny both live so far away."

You also couldn't deny that. The last time you saw them before their surprise visit was at their wedding a year ago.

"And Tony and Eloise will be starting school, so you'll legally have to cut their hours."

Where was he going with this? Was he trying to make you feel like a friendless loser? You did not want to think about how your two employees would leave a gaping hole in your heart and your store-

"Oh, shit!" you exclaimed, dropping your spatula into your pot and turning to him with wide eyes.

"No need to be so upset, precious. You'll always have me- right by your side all the time! I'm perfectly fine with just you, so I'm sure you will be fine with just-"

"No, you're right- I'll have to cut their hours to basically nothing..." you had no clue what Angel was yapping about, as you were too busy stressing about your soon-to-be lack of employees. "I'm gonna need to draft up an application, and fast. There's what- three weeks until they go back? How did I not realize it earlier- El was literally talking about how cheer is starting up soon, shit!"

You began to get lost in your thoughts, fretting over how you would be able to vet applications. People were certain to flood the position due to the recent attachment your store had to Megistos, so how were you going to find those who actually wanted to work for you for reasons besides fame or 'proximity' to the hero? You would need to start compiling-

"(Y/n)?" Your eyes focused on Angel's downcast face, momentarily pulling you away from your thoughts. "I just... I feel like I was having a really hard day and you're not really talking to me... Not that you have to, I guess. I'm just feeling pretty sad and you didn't ask me how I was..."

Dammit, you didn't want to make the man feel worse. You'd literally let him stay over so you could help lift his spirits, and here you were focusing on your own issues. It seemed only being close with Sarah, James, and Benny for so long had you seriously lacking in friendship skills, but Angel was the victim of your shortcomings. You turned off the stove to move around the counter and wrap him in a tight back hug.

"I'm sorry, Angel. I meant to ask you if you were okay earlier, I could tell you were getting tense."

He turned around in your embrace so that your head was tucked against his chest, and you felt him exhale deeply. "It's okay, (Y/n). You have so much to think about. I doubt that you wanna worry about me... but I'll be fine as long as I'm just by your side! It's no big deal what's happened in the past."

"What?" You pulled your face away to look at him while keeping him in your arms. "No, Angel, it is a big deal. The way you were treated wasn't okay by any measure, and I could see today that it still hurts you to reminisce on your past. I know you well enough now to discern which smiles are real, and when you were talking to the kids it was fake. Do you want to talk more about what's happened to you? I'm here."

Angel looked down at you with glassy eyes and a soft grin. "I'm okay, precious. It did hurt more than I thought it would to talk about my memories, probably because you helped me make sense of why so many people wanted to be with me. I didn't understand that before I met you. It makes me sad to think about how my younger self was used and discarded so much, and how much I- or um, it probably upset my parents, but honestly, now that I have you by my side, it doesn't hurt so bad! You see me for me, and are so sweet and kind and understanding- I think you may be all I need to to really feel cared for again! Maybe I don't need to date anyone else and all I need is to be with you? I haven't really seen anyone since we've become friends anyways."

Your smile faltered slightly at his words. "Well, you definitely don't need to date anymore if you don't want to. Tons of people find contentment in life without romance and physical intimacy. But, Angel- when you say be with me... you mean as a friend still, right? I just wanna make sure we're on the same page, cause I still believe that's what you truly want with me and I with you. If you're feeling confused again we can talk? Maybe even cut down the touchiness and nicknames if-"

"No!" He brought your head back to his chest with his hand and squeezed you tighter like he was afraid you would try to pull away. "We don't need to do that! I trust you when you say I feel platonically, no need to change things! I just mean that you're already the number one person in my life and my best friend, so I'm gonna make sure to become the same to you- your absolute number one!"

You quietly removed yourself from his grip and made your way over to the stove to finish up your dinner, mulling over his proclamation with furrowed brows. He wanted the number one spot next to you? That spot was currently filled already by James, and you were about to remind him of that fact until you thought deeper about it. Was James still your closest relationship? You'd practically given him that title the day you met him, practically placing him on a pedestal too. But looking back, had that prevented you from fostering other strong relationships?

James was always the one for you in your mind, and that made sense when you both were so in sync with each other and on the same page (minus your secret crush, you supposed). But these days it wasn't quite like that, was it? You and him seemed to be clashing in every aspect of your relationship, so did it make sense for you to keep reserving that place by your side for him? Being around him was starting to hurt more than it did feel good, but you weren't quite ready to confront what that meant for the both of you.

Either way, Angel's number one priority could be his platonic relationship with you, but you knew that whoever was going to be your number one was going to be your romantic interest. That spot was already filled (by James, or by a future- no... it was filled by James. Right?), and you just didn't see Angel that way, not when you knew how much you both needed a friend. Still, Angel was already having such a hard day, and you didn't want to worsen it by telling him his goal was unattainable for him, so you instead tried to set a soft boundary while also appeasing him.

"I mean, once I have a partner they'll probably take that spot, but for now I definitely can say I spend most of my time with you right now. You're really special to me, sunshine." You began plating the food but were met with silence. You turned around to walk towards the table and met a very indiscernible-looking seated Angel. "You okay?"

"Mhm. Yeah, sorry!"

"Okay, but know you can tell me anything, okay?" you smiled at him. And his smile returned, too, but you could practically see the wheels turning in his mind as he tried to make sense of something. Whatever, you were certain when he was ready he'd tell you what was going on in his mind.

...

As he got dressed in your room later that night, Angel was so very confused. His past few days of getting to watch over and protect you were a dream, truly- but something about being beside you today left him feeling frustrated and confused. While you got ready for bed in the bathroom, he ruminated on it all.

With your other couple of employees he had seen, you were civil and kind towards them, but it seemed pretty professional. And even though that Montell guy still clearly didn't trust him around you, overall they were just a bunch of sweet elderly people who cooed over him and remarked about what a kind young gentleman he was.

Today, though- today was different. Seeing you interact with Tony and Eloise had his heart feeling like it was getting squeezed and prodded at with a sharp stick. You three clearly had such a close relationship. It was like how you were with Sarah and Benny, too, and he could only assume it was also how you also were with that Jamie guy and Megistos.

They all had more with you than he did, but they also didn't have as much with you as he wanted. That left him confused and insecure, as he wasn't sure what it was that he actually did want with you.

He had convinced himself that he simply needed to be your best friend, but he sort of was also starting to think he wanted to be your... well, your everything. That's why he tried to subtly remind you that everyone else wasn't as close to you as him when you really thought about it. He was the closest by your side- physically of course- but also soon to be emotionally as well!

It was still platonic! Probably... but as he thought of all his old relationships when he recounted them to Eloise and Tony, he could only think about doing all the couple things he had done in the past with you instead. And he couldn't ignore the way his heart stuttered when the high schoolers would suggest that you and him were together.

That being said, you insisted on your mutual friendship- and you would seriously never lie to him! He knew you weren't that kind of person. You were truly his best friend, that much was evident by how kind and in tune you were with him in his moments of sadness and regret. And you also mentioned that if he was starting to feel romantically towards you, then you would cut off allowing him to touch you and call you cute little names and be as close to you- he couldn't have that.

That's why he decided again that he just felt platonic. If he felt otherwise, you would take away his genuine happiness and peace- things he was relatively new to but he doubted he could live without now that he had them.

You didn't like him anyways, and even if he liked you it wasn't like he could force you into a relationship with him. You didn't have a romantic partner or a crush either, so until you did in his eyes he was still your number one. He could keep everyone else at bay and maintain that spot and he would be perfectly content. It was all enough!

He sighed in relief once he made sense of his confusing feeling surrounding you for a second time, before idly walking to the window to shut it and close the curtains for the night. He looked outside idly, but scrunched up his nose as he surveyed the scene outside. Something wasn't right...

...

You were in the bathroom washing your face while Angel got dressed for bed. He tried to hide it, but he had been bringing night clothes every day since he was assigned to guard you in the hope that he would finally get to spend the night, and he had blushed profusely when you amusedly revealed to him that you were aware of it since day one.

You exited the bathroom with a large yawn and saw him staring out of your bedroom window. "Whatcha looking at?"

"(Y/n), what's with the fog outside?"

"Hmm?" You walked over to stand beside him, peering out the window. "Oh, yeah! It's been like this the past few nights. It's nice cause no one can see in my room at night so I've even been able to keep the window open to let in the night breeze..." you trailed off as you noticed how tense the hero suddenly became.

He opened the window and put his upper body through it to survey the scene, before re-entering and looking at you with a concerned expression. "Precious, it hasn't been humid all summer and it's super hot in the city even through the night- there shouldn't be any fog. How long has this been going on, did you say?"

"Um, I'm not sure..."

He placed a hand on your shoulder and looked at you expectantly. "I need you to try to remember for me, okay?"

He was acting a bit differently than normal, the only time he was like this was when he was guiding the crowd that one day. Oh. He was in his version of hero mode. It was much different than James' stern approach to his work, but it certainly- wait, why was he in hero mode?

"Maybe since that first day that you guarded me? Angel, what's going on?"

He kissed his teeth as he shut your open window and curtain hastily. "Well, precious-I think we need to give Megistos a call."
