Chapter 18: First Recovery

The morning sun filtered through the gauzy curtains of their suite, painting the room in soft, golden light. Marinette sat cross-legged on the sofa, a steaming cup of coffee in her hands, her focus fixed on the tablet in her lap. She'd been going over the surveillance notes from the Winter Ball for what felt like the hundredth time, searching for anything they might have missed.

But her thoughts were scattered, her concentration fractured.

The tension from last night still lingered, unspoken but palpable. She hadn't seen Felix yet this morning, but she knew he was avoiding her as much as she was avoiding him. It was better this way, she told herself. They had a job to do, and they couldn't afford any distractions.

Just as she took another sip of her coffee, there was a sharp knock at the door.

"Package for you," came a voice from the other side.

Marinette set the cup down and padded to the door, opening it to reveal a courier holding a sleek black case marked with the Vanguard Operations logo. She signed for the delivery and brought the case inside, setting it on the coffee table just as Felix emerged from his room, buttoning up his crisp white shirt.

"Morning," he said, his tone neutral as he glanced at the case.

"Morning," Marinette replied, equally brisk.

She opened the case, and the sleek, high-tech gadgets inside immediately caught her attention. Vanguard never skimped when it came to equipment, and this time was no exception.

Inside were a series of compact devices, each one gleaming with the promise of cutting-edge innovation. There was a set of wrist-mounted grappling hooks, slim enough to pass for jewelry; a pair of sunglasses with augmented reality capabilities; tiny earbud communicators that doubled as translators; and a sleek black-and-red lipstick case that concealed a miniature blowtorch.

Felix whistled low, stepping closer to inspect the gadgets. "Looks like someone's been shopping in the 'spy thriller' section of the catalog."

Marinette smirked despite herself. "At least they sent us something useful this time."

Felix picked up one of the grappling hooks, testing its weight in his hand. "Think these will hold your pride, Ladybug?"

"Think they'll survive your arrogance, Cat Noir?" she shot back, her tone light but her words pointed.

His lips twitched in a suppressed smile, and for a moment, the tension between them eased, replaced by the familiar rhythm of their banter.

At the bottom of the case was a crisp white envelope sealed with the agency's insignia. Marinette plucked it out and tore it open, unfolding the letter inside.

"It's a briefing," she said, scanning the contents. "We have two weeks to stop Hawkmoth. The agency expects significant progress before then."

Felix leaned against the back of the sofa, crossing his arms. "No pressure or anything."

Marinette ignored his sarcasm, continuing to read. "There's more. We've been invited to a private dinner party tomorrow night. Hawkmoth will be there, and he's expected to discuss his next major deal."

Felix straightened, his green eyes sharpening. "That could be our chance to get closer. Maybe even figure out where he's keeping the Miraculous artifacts."

Marinette nodded, her mind already racing with possibilities. "We'll need to plan carefully. It's a high-risk situation."

"High risk is our specialty," Felix said with a smirk, picking up one of the earpieces.

"Let's hope our luck holds out," Marinette muttered, closing the letter and turning her attention back to the gadgets.

Testing the Gadgets

They spent the better part of the morning testing the new equipment.

Marinette was the first to try the grappling hooks, fastening the slim devices around her wrists. "Ready?" she asked, glancing at Felix.

"Impress me," he replied, leaning casually against the wall.

With a flick of her wrist, the hook shot out, embedding itself into the ceiling beam. Marinette gave the line a quick tug to test its strength before scaling the wall with ease, her movements fluid and precise.

Felix clapped slowly, his expression one of mock awe. "Not bad, Ladybug. But let's see how you handle the descent."

Marinette rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress a grin as she rappelled down, landing lightly on her feet. "Piece of cake."

Felix stepped forward, adjusting his own grappling hook. "My turn."

He fired the line and ascended with practiced efficiency, his movements quick and controlled. But as he descended, his foot caught on the edge of the sofa, and he stumbled, nearly crashing into Marinette.

Their hands brushed as she reached out instinctively to steady him, and they both froze, the contact sending an unwelcome jolt through them.

"Careful," Marinette said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Felix cleared his throat, stepping back quickly. "I'm fine."

They avoided each other's gaze as they moved on to the next gadget: the augmented reality sunglasses. Marinette slipped them on, activating the interface with a touch to the frame.

The lenses lit up with a digital overlay, highlighting objects in the room and identifying potential threats. "These are impressive," she said, walking around to test the range.

Felix tried his pair next, smirking as he turned toward Marinette. "Looks like I've got a visual on our most dangerous asset."

Marinette raised an eyebrow. "Careful, Cat Noir. Flattery will get you nowhere."

"Who said I was flattering you?" he shot back, his tone teasing but his expression unreadable.

The Dinner Party Invitation

By the time they finished testing the gadgets, the sun had dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows across the room. Marinette packed the equipment back into the case, her mind already on the dinner party.

Marinette hesitated, biting her lip. "Do you think... do you think we can pull this off without letting personal feelings get in the way?"

Felix's expression softened, and for a moment, the mask of confidence slipped. "We don't have a choice."

She nodded, her heart sinking at the truth of his words.

As they prepared to leave for the briefing room to finalize their plans, Marinette couldn't shake the feeling of dread settling in her chest. They were running out of time, and the stakes had never been higher.

But for now, all they could do was keep moving forward. After all, they had an important mission for the dinner party.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

The soft glow of the setting sun cast a golden hue over their suite as Marinette stood in front of the full-length mirror, inspecting her reflection. The sleek black evening gown hugged her curves perfectly, its high slit revealing just enough leg to distract from the arsenal she had hidden beneath. She adjusted the strap of her dagger holster, making sure it was secure against her thigh but loose enough to allow for quick access.

The blade was small but razor-sharp, its matte finish ensuring it wouldn't reflect light. Alongside the dagger, she'd tucked a slim lipstick case blowtorch into her clutch, as well as a compact tranquilizer pen disguised as a decorative hairpin.

"Ready?" Felix's voice broke through her thoughts.

Marinette turned to see him leaning casually against the doorframe, already dressed in a perfectly tailored tuxedo. His blond hair was neatly styled, and his emerald-green eyes sparkled with a mix of mischief and focus.

"Almost," she replied, smoothing out the fabric of her dress. "What about you? Got everything you need?"

Felix smirked, tapping the lapel of his tuxedo. "Hidden compartments. State-of-the-art." He opened the jacket briefly, revealing a set of sleek, compact gadgets: a mini EMP device, a lock-picking kit, and a set of explosive cufflinks.

Marinette raised an eyebrow, impressed despite herself. "Explosive cufflinks? That's subtle."

"They're functional and fashionable," Felix quipped.

Marinette rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress the small smile tugging at her lips. "Let's hope we won't need them."

Felix straightened, his smirk softening into something more serious. "Let's hope. But if we do, we'll make it out. We always do."

Their eyes met for a moment, a silent agreement passing between them. Whatever happened tonight, they were in it together.

The Dinner Party

The dinner party was held at an opulent estate, its grand ballroom glittering with crystal chandeliers and polished marble floors. Guests in expensive attire mingled, sipping champagne and exchanging murmured pleasantries.

Marinette and Felix arrived arm in arm, their practiced smiles hiding the tension beneath. They moved through the crowd with ease, stopping to exchange polite conversation with other attendees while keeping their true objective in mind.

Hawkmoth was here somewhere, and if their intel was correct, so was one of the Miraculous artifacts.

"See anything?" Marinette murmured, her voice low as she sipped her drink.

Felix's eyes scanned the room, sharp and calculating. "Not yet. But there's a hallway to the east that looks promising. Shall we?"

Marinette nodded, and they excused themselves from the main party, slipping into the quieter corridors of the estate.

The Safe

The hallway led them to a study lined with dark wooden shelves and antique furniture. At the far end of the room was a large painting that, upon closer inspection, concealed a high-tech safe embedded in the wall.

Felix crouched down, inspecting the safe's locking mechanism. "This isn't just any safe," he said, his tone laced with admiration. "It has a biometrics scanner and a motion detector. We'll need to disable the sensors before we can open it."

Marinette pulled out the mini EMP device from Felix's jacket pocket, handing it to him. "Good thing you came prepared."

Felix flashed her a quick grin and activated the device, holding it close to the scanner. The small machine emitted a faint hum before the scanner's lights flickered and died.

"Motion detector neutralized," Felix said. "Now for the hard part."

Marinette knelt beside him, producing a mini bomb from her clutch. "This should do the trick."

"Impressive," Felix murmured, watching as she carefully placed the device on the safe.

"I aim to please," Marinette replied, setting the timer. "We've got ten seconds."

They stepped back, and the bomb detonated with a muffled boom, blowing the door off the safe. Inside was a single Miraculous artifact, glowing faintly in the dim light.

Marinette grabbed it, securing it in her clutch just as the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway.

"Trouble," Felix muttered, his expression hardening.

The Guards

A guard, who had apparently been sleeping outside the study, burst into the room. His wide eyes took in the scene—the open safe, the agents—and he immediately sounded the alarm.

Within seconds, more guards stormed in, their weapons drawn.

"Hands where I can see them!" one of them barked.

Felix and Marinette exchanged a glance, silently agreeing to play along—at least for now. They raised their hands, allowing the guards to bind their wrists with zip ties.

As the guards led them toward the exit, Marinette's fingers brushed the edge of the dagger strapped to her thigh. She waited until the guards were distracted, then whispered to Felix, "Get ready."

With a flick of her wrist, she unsheathed the dagger and began sawing through the ties. The blade worked quickly, and within moments, her hands were free.

Felix, noticing her exposed skin as she adjusted the holster, felt his face heat up despite the situation. Marinette caught the blush and smirked, leaning close enough to whisper, "Don't let those eyes wander too far, Felix."

"Noted," he muttered, his voice slightly strained.

She cut through his ties and handed him the dagger. Together, they moved quickly, taking down the remaining guards with a combination of precision and ingenuity.

Back to the Party

With the guards incapacitated and the Miraculous artifact secure, Marinette and Felix slipped back into the main ballroom. They adjusted their clothing, smoothing out wrinkles and brushing away dust as if nothing had happened.

Felix offered Marinette his arm, his smirk returning. "Shall we?"

Marinette looped her arm through his, her lips curving into a sly smile. "After you, partner."

As they rejoined the party, they blended seamlessly into the crowd, their masks of charm and sophistication firmly in place.

But beneath the surface, both of them knew this was just the beginning. The artifact they'd retrieved was only one piece of the puzzle, and with time running out, the stakes were higher than ever.

Still, for now, they were in sync—an unstoppable team in the face of danger.

Hi guys! Hope this was long enough for you! I really hope you guys like the story so far, and if I made a mistake or anything, feel free to let me know so I can fix it! Tsm!
