Chapter 1021: A Stack of Silver Notes Editor: Henyee Translations

The family head of the Xuan family was a skilled martial artist. He felt the pressure from the immense power displayed in the courtyard. At this moment, he sensed an unshakable force when facing Xuan Louze, but the dignity of the family head could not be violated.

He sent a wave of inner strength towards Xuan Louze. “Get out!”

Xuan Louze raised his hand to block, sending the family head flying into the wall. The impact caused him to fall to the ground, spitting out a mouthful of blood. “Can’t we talk this out? Why resort to violence?”

The family head was so angry that he spat out another mouthful of blood.

Xuan Louze stared at him for a while. “Are you leaving or not?”

The family head would never leave!

Xuan Louze dusted off his hands as if getting rid of some dirt. “Fine, I tried to be reasonable, but you don’t listen. Don’t blame me for being rude.”

He put on his gloves, grabbed the family head by the collar, and threw him out.

The family head tried to resist, but it felt like something was restraining him. He couldn’t muster any strength and was forcibly dragged to the courtyard gate.

The Xuan family members who had just gotten up from the ground were stunned. What was Xuan Louze trying to do? Was he asking for death?

Xuan Louze declared, “Remember, from now on, this courtyard is mine. Do not disturb me.”

“Oh, and don’t blame me. I asked the steward to refurbish my courtyard, but he refused. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have come here.” He then picked up the steward and hung him at the main gate.

The steward felt like dying. If he had known Xuan Louze would do something like this, he would have complied. He regretted it deeply.

As he was hung at the main gate, his regret reached its peak.

His regret wasn’t enough. The Xuan family members took Xuan Louze’s words to heart and directed their resentment at the steward, who was eventually expelled from the Xuan family.

Fifth Master Xuan shouted, “Rebellious son, what do you want?”

“That should be my question. You wrote me a letter asking me to return, then had me enter through the back door, making me look like a bastard.” Xuan Louze added, “And you’re not my father, so don’t boss me around, or I’ll hang you up too.”

Everyone assumed Xuan Louze was just angry and didn’t take his words seriously. After all, given how Fifth Master Xuan treated him, anyone would be upset. Only a few didn’t dare speak due to seniority.

Fifth Master Xuan was speechless with rage. “You…”

Xuan Loufei, Xuan Louze’s elder sister, thought he had gone mad. “Xuan Louze, he’s your grandfather. How dare you?”

Xuan Louze calmly replied, “Who is my grandfather? Someone who summons me at will, dismisses me at whim, and doesn’t care if I live or die? You call that a grandfather? Try begging on the streets for two years and see if you still recognize him as your grandfather.”

The eldest master couldn’t stand it anymore and shouted, “Shut up!”

Xuan Louze looked him up and down. “Who are you? Let me tell you, this is none of your business. If you meddle, I won’t hesitate to deal with you too.”

“And let me warn you all, don’t send your shadow assassins to disturb my peace. If they all end up dead, I won’t be responsible.”

The family head shouted, “Arrogant!”

Xuan Louze blinked. “Old man, you’re getting on in years. A fall would hurt for a long time.”

The family head felt a bitter taste rise in his throat. “You…”

Xuan Louze waved his hand. “Everyone get out. I need to rest. Oh, and prepare a feast. If you don’t comply, I’ll wreck the kitchen. And if anyone poisons my food, I’ll force them to eat it themselves. You have one incense stick’s worth of time.”

He then beckoned Zeng Huo. “Let’s go.”

Zeng Huo closed the courtyard door, shutting everyone outside, and followed Xuan Louze into the house, leaving the family in disarray.

Fifth Master Xuan looked horrified. “Father.”

The family head’s face was even darker. What kind of descendant dares to seize the grandfather’s courtyard? He couldn’t even speak of this humiliation. “Find another place to stay.”

If he fought Xuan Louze for the courtyard, it would be even more humiliating.

A maid approached. “Family head, should we prepare the feast?”

Fifth Master Xuan barked, “No food for him!”

The maid stepped back. “Yes.”

The group gradually dispersed.

Xuan Louze waited for an incense stick’s time. When no food was brought, he promptly smashed every kitchen in the mansion to bits, ensuring no one could eat.

The family was infuriated.

The family head sent shadow guards to capture Xuan Louze, but they were all annihilated. Their bodies were placed in the family head’s room.

The family head nearly fainted.

The eldest, second, third, fourth, and fifth masters gathered in the family head’s room, looking at the corpses, both shocked and furious.

“Father, what do we do now?” Fifth Master Xuan wanted to kill Xuan Louze immediately but felt powerless.

“Yes, father, if this continues, how can we hold the succession ceremony in three days?” The eldest master was the most anxious, as his son was to be the successor.

“Maybe we should postpone it,” suggested the second master. “If Xuan Louze causes trouble during the ceremony, the Xuan family will lose all face.”n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om

The third master agreed. “Father, I support the second brother. There’s no need to rush.”

The fourth master said, “We should understand why Xuan Louze returned and address the internal conflict first, then hold the ceremony.”

Each had their own agenda.

The family head pondered and asked Fifth Master Xuan, “You called him back. What do you think?”

Fifth Master Xuan retorted, “Isn’t the succession ceremony supposed to involve all Xuan family members?”

The eldest master glared at Fifth Master Xuan. If he hadn’t called Xuan Louze back, none of this would have happened. “You only cause trouble!”

Fifth Master Xuan fell silent, unsure how Xuan Louze had become so powerful.

The second master asked, “Father, what do you decide?”

“The ceremony proceeds as planned. The invitations are sent. Postponing would be a joke.” The family head made the final decision.

The eldest master was pleased. “Yes, father.”

The family head waved them off. “Prepare quickly and don’t linger here.”

They all left.

Xuan Louze went to the accounting office with Zeng Huo to withdraw money. “Give me ten thousand taels. I want to eat out.”

The accountant was terrified. “No money!”

Xuan Louze pushed him aside and broke the lock, taking out a stack of silver notes. “Let’s go, Zeng Huo. Time to enjoy ourselves.”

Zeng Huo gave the accountant a sympathetic look and followed Xuan Louze out.

The accountant quickly counted the missing money and found thirty thousand taels gone. He broke into a cold sweat and rushed to report to the family head.

Chapter 1022: Throwing Money Out the Window Editor: Henyee Translations

The head of the Xuan family immediately felt a surge of anger upon hearing the news and shouted, “Quickly, get that money back!”

The accountant, recalling how Xuan Louze had easily broken the lock, hesitated and stammered, “Family head, Fifth Young Master’s martial arts are too powerful. We can’t match him.”

Frustrated and helpless, the family head said, “Send the fifth master. He must retrieve the money.”

Finally passing the responsibility, the accountant was secretly pleased and quickly responded, “Yes, family head. I’ll go right away.”

Fifth Master Xuan was infuriated upon learning that Xuan Louze had brazenly stolen money from the family. His anger even caused his wounds to reopen. “Come, let’s go. I refuse to believe I can’t handle him.”

Leading a team of guards, Fifth Master Xuan set out in pursuit.

Meanwhile, Xuan Louze pocketed the substantial sum and strolled through the city, observing the scene. This city was the only one in Chen’an that was somewhat presentable. He wondered how it was managed.

Walking beside him, Zeng Huo whispered, “Where are we going now?”

Xuan Louze thought for a moment. “To the Imperial Hospital to inquire about my two little apprentices. With their medical skills, if they had arrived in Chen’an before the new year, the country wouldn’t be in such a state.”

They headed towards the Imperial Hospital.

With money to smooth the way, Xuan Louze handed over a hundred-tael note and learned everything about Yuan Hongjun and Bao Linjiang.

Both had indeed arrived in Chen’an before the new year but mysteriously disappeared the next day. They hadn’t been seen since, and no one knew where they had gone.

Xuan Louze pondered. They came specifically to treat smallpox and wouldn’t have willingly gone into hiding. Something must have happened.

If he could find the last person they had seen, he would likely find them.

Zeng Huo asked, “Do you have any clues?”

“None,” Xuan Louze replied. He planned to investigate his apprentices’ last known location that night. “Let’s get something to eat. I’m starving.” He hadn’t eaten all day, and his stomach was growling.

With money in hand, they asked a passerby for directions and tipped him ten taels. Then, they headed to the largest restaurant, Riverbank Cuisine.

Xuan Louze slapped a hundred-tael note on the counter. “I want the best private room and twenty of your most expensive dishes.”

The shopkeeper, who hadn’t seen such a generous customer in a long time, eagerly complied. “Yes, sir.” He promptly ordered the dishes and personally led them to an upstairs private room, serving them tea himself.

Xuan Louze opened the window, and a figure flew in, landing inside.

It was a young man in the uniform of the Imperial Guards’ commander, with a stern face and eyes sharp as knives. “Xuan Louze!”

Ignoring the man’s identity, Xuan Louze kicked him out the window.

The young man was Xuan Nanzhou, the eldest son of the second branch. He had heard about Xuan Louze causing a ruckus at home and came to confront him. He hadn’t expected to be kicked out right after calling his name.

In his impression, Xuan Louze was reserved and wouldn’t do anything so outrageous. This behavior was completely out of character.

He hit the ground, the pain snapping him back to his senses. “Xuan Louze!”

Fifth Master Xuan, arriving with his men, saw his nephew, the commander, lying on the ground and quickly helped him up. “Are you alright?” The concern in his eyes made it seem like he was his own son.

Xuan Nanzhou glanced at Fifth Master Xuan. “Uncle, what’s wrong with Xuan Louze?”

“I don’t know,” Fifth Master Xuan replied, both exasperated and angry. “He just took thirty thousand taels from home. I came to retrieve it. Since you’re here, why don’t you help me?”

Xuan Nanzhou’s face darkened. Everyone had just seen him get knocked down. Approaching again would only further embarrass him.

“Uncle, you go ahead. I have other matters to attend to.” With that, he turned and left.

Fifth Master Xuan was speechless.

What happened to standing together against a common enemy?

Bringing his men, Fifth Master Xuan headed to Riverbank Cuisine. In truth, he didn’t want to face Xuan Louze alone. Xuan Louze was like a firecracker, easily ignited and dangerous.

The shopkeeper led Fifth Master Xuan to Xuan Louze’s room. “Young master, someone is here to see you!”

“Whoever it is can wait. I’m eating now!” Xuan Louze’s cold voice came through.

“Get out here, you rebellious son!” Fifth Master Xuan shouted in anger.

There was no response from inside.

Fifth Master Xuan signaled his guards to open the door.

But no one expected the door wouldn’t budge.

Seeing his guards struggle and fail to open the door made Fifth Master Xuan’s face burn with embarrassment, as if he had been slapped.

“Xuan Louze, open the door!” He shouted, trying to save face.

Still, no response.

The shopkeeper wanted to disappear from the awkwardness.

“Money, money falling from the sky!” Cheers erupted from below. Fifth Master Xuan had a bad feeling and rushed downstairs.

He saw silver notes flying out of Xuan Louze’s window, and the townsfolk were scrambling for them.

Fifth Master Xuan felt faint. If he had known, he would never have called this rebellious son back. In less than a day, Xuan Louze had caused more trouble than others did in a lifetime.

“Why are you standing there? Get those notes back!” He shouted.

The townsfolk, hearing this, ran away with the money. Losing it now would be a waste.Nôv(el)B\\jnn

The crowd scattered, the money gone.

Fifth Master Xuan stood there, unwilling to return. How could he explain this?

Xuan Louze, full and content, left the restaurant with Zeng Huo.

On a quiet street, Zeng Huo asked, “Did you throw away all the money?”

Xuan Louze pulled out the remaining notes. “No, just half.” He handed some to Zeng Huo. “You’ve helped me a lot. Take this.”

Zeng Huo gladly accepted. This was the first time Xuan Louze had given him money. He could use it to start a business and live comfortably.

They walked away.

Meanwhile, when Fifth Master Xuan returned upstairs, Xuan Louze was gone.

In a high pavilion.

Xuan Dongsheng and Xuan Dongsi watched Xuan Louze and Zeng Huo with amused expressions.

“Brother, this Xuan Louze might be an impostor!” Xuan Dongsi said, holding a string of prayer beads, fingering a few as he spoke.

Xuan Dongsheng disagreed slightly. “If he’s an impostor, would he act so boldly?”

“That’s true,” said Xuan Dongsi, contemplating Xuan Louze’s drastically different behavior. “What could have triggered this change?”

Xuan Dongsheng was silent for a moment. “Maybe his improved martial skills have released all his pent-up frustration.”

Xuan Dongsi paused his bead-counting. “Isn’t this release a bit too terrifying?”

Xuan Dongsheng, with his calm demeanor, responded steadily, “When someone who’s been deeply repressed suddenly lets loose, it’s bound to be intense. Let’s observe for now. No matter his motives, all will be revealed during the succession ceremony in three days.”

Mentioning the succession ceremony made Xuan Dongsi anxious. “Brother, what if he disrupts the ceremony? I must kill him within these three days to prevent any sabotage.”

Xuan Dongsheng also wanted to eliminate Xuan Louze to control all variables. “Do you think you can kill him?”

Xuan Dongsi, confident, replied, “No one is invincible. He may have high martial skills, but he’s just one man. He can’t possibly fend off every attack, hidden or otherwise.”

Xuan Dongsheng nodded slowly. “Then give it a try.”

“Alright.” Xuan Dongsi slipped his prayer beads onto his wrist and headed downstairs.

“Father, how did Xuan Louze become so powerful?” Xuan Nanzhou returned home, eager for answers.

Second Master Xuan shook his head. “I’m puzzled too. Avoid confronting him directly; he even disregards your grandfather.”

Xuan Nanzhou was confused. “What do you mean?”

Second Master Xuan sighed, deeply perplexed by Xuan Louze’s newfound boldness. “The house steward didn’t repair his courtyard, so he took over your grandfather’s courtyard.”

Xuan Nanzhou’s mouth fell open in disbelief. “Did he really do that?”

“Yes,” Xuan Nanzhou confirmed. “Your Fifth Uncle called him back for your cousin’s succession ceremony.”

Xuan Nanzhou thought for a moment. “Father, something’s off. Fifth Uncle despises Xuan Louze. He wouldn’t have called him back voluntarily.”

Second Master Xuan paused. “You’re right. We should investigate further.”

“Yes.”

As Xuan Louze walked, he sensed someone following him. “They couldn’t wait to make a move.”

Zeng Huo, walking casually beside him, said, “You’re too high-profile.”

Xuan Louze chuckled. “If they don’t provoke me, I won’t retaliate. Let’s meet them.”

Zeng Huo nodded. “Okay.”

Xuan Louze led Zeng Huo to a secluded alley, standing in the middle to wait. Soon, crossbows appeared from the front, back, and above.

Xuan Louze smirked and vanished, followed by the sound of crashes. When he stopped, all the assassins lay in a heap in the alley.

He dusted off his hands. “Zeng Huo, interrogate them and find out who sent them.”

Zeng Huo, now proficient in interrogation, glanced over the captives and picked one. With just a few words, the assassin confessed that Xuan Dongsi had sent them.

Xuan Louze recalled the faces he’d seen at the mansion. “Xuan Dongsi?”

Zeng Huo nodded. “He’s the fourth son of the main branch.”

“Go invite him here,” Xuan Louze instructed. “Tell him I have something important to discuss.”

“Yes.”

Though Xuan Dongsi was a clever man, he wasn’t clever enough. Zeng Huo managed to bring him to the alley with just three sentences.

Seeing the scene in the alley, Xuan Dongsi broke into a cold sweat. “What do you want to talk about?”

“It’s not what he wants to say, but what I want to say,” Xuan Louze said, stepping behind Xuan Dongsi.

Startled, Xuan Dongsi spun around. “What do you want?”

Xuan Louze was indifferent about the Xuan family but interested in their wealth. “I want ten thousand taels of silver, or I’ll expose this incident to everyone.”

“Extortion?” Xuan Dongsi sneered.

“It’s not extortion. It’s hush money.” Xuan Louze smiled warmly. “If you don’t pay, I can ensure that within half a day, all of Zhongling City will believe Xuan Dongsi attempted to murder Xuan Dongsheng to seize the family head position.”

“Do you think they’ll believe it?” Xuan Dongsi asked, eyebrows raised.

Xuan Louze smiled faintly, calmly replying, “Whether they believe it or not doesn’t matter. As long as it tarnishes the Xuan family and creates infighting, it’s enough.”

Xuan Dongsi frowned. “You also bear the Xuan name. What’s the benefit of tarnishing the family?”

“I just want money, not the Xuan family. What happens to the family doesn’t concern me.” Xuan Louze didn’t care about the Xuan family. “You have one incense stick’s time to get the money, or I’ll hang these men at the mansion’s gate.”

Infuriated, Xuan Dongsi shouted, “You…”

Xuan Louze was done talking. “Zeng Huo, start the timer.”

Zeng Huo took out an hourglass and flipped it over in front of Xuan Dongsi. “Time starts now.”

Xuan Dongsi stormed off.

Watching his retreating figure, Zeng Huo asked, “Will he bring the money?”

“No,” Xuan Louze replied confidently.

“Then why…”

Xuan Louze interrupted, “The Xuan family married a daughter to the emperor of Xia Sang Kingdom, and she bore the tenth prince. Haven’t you considered the implications?”

Zeng Huo’s eyes widened. “You mean the Xuan family has already allied with Xia Sang?”

“Most likely,” Xuan Louze said, crossing his arms. “What if the Xuan family is also connected to the Yun Organization?”

Zeng Huo’s eyes widened in realization. “The Xuan family is a big target. By stirring things up, you’re trying to flush out the Yun Organization or even Lord Yun?”

“Exactly,” Xuan Louze confirmed. Finding Lord Yun would mark the end of this mission. She had no desire to stay in this chaotic place any longer.

“Then I wish us success,” Zeng Huo said, hoping to retire in peace.

“Get two carts and take these men to the Xuan mansion. Let them make another scene.”

“Got it.”

Xuan Dongsi returned to Xuan Dongsheng. “Brother, the men I sent to kill Xuan Louze were all defeated. He demanded ten thousand taels of silver as hush money.”

Xuan Dongsheng’s brows knitted together. “What did you say?”

“I refused,” Xuan Dongsi replied, feeling somewhat confident. He believed Xuan Louze, knowing who sent the assassins, didn’t act against him because of some apprehension.

Xuan Dongsheng was worried. He sensed Xuan Louze wasn’t one to back down. “How did he get the upper hand?”

Xuan Dongsi shook his head. “I don’t know. Anyway, my men are all in the alley.”

Xuan Dongsheng, considering the worst-case scenario, said, “Maybe you should just give him the money?”

Xuan Dongsi was silent for a moment. “No, giving in now means he will demand more later. We must not indulge him.”

Xuan Dongsheng, having witnessed Xuan Louze’s “great deeds,” knew his threats might not be mere jokes. “But what if he really hangs people at the mansion gate?”

Xuan Dongsi was confident. “He won’t. He’s just trying to intimidate us. Don’t worry, big brother. We must not give in, or his demands will grow.”

Xuan Dongsheng was still worried. “I have a feeling Xuan Louze won’t let this go.”

Xuan Dongsi, full of confidence, replied, “Don’t worry, big brother. I will handle this.”

He couldn’t believe Xuan Louze would do something so drastic. After all, he was still a member of the Xuan family.

At the Xuan family mansion’s gate, a crowd had gathered.

A banner beside the gate read, “These people were killed by me, Xuan Dongsi. They failed their mission, so I executed them all!”

“What kind of sin is this? How can they hang people at the gate like this?”

“The Xuan family is becoming more arrogant and lawless, treating human lives like dirt.”

“The ruler is still in power, and the Xuan family dares to use such brutal methods. This is too much!”

Xuan Dongsi rushed back upon hearing the news. Seeing the scene at the gate, he nearly fainted. He never expected Xuan Louze to actually do this.

Fuming, Xuan Dongsi shouted, “What are you looking at? Disperse immediately!”

The crowd, while cursing the Xuan family, began to scatter. The Xuan family’s reputation, once revered, had now turned to scorn within a single day, especially Xuan Dongsi, who was now viewed like filth.

In the study, the Xuan family head roared, “Xuan Dongsi, what is going on? Are you trying to ruin our family? Listen to what people are saying about us now!”

Xuan Dongsi tried to shift the blame to Xuan Louze. “Grandfather, we didn’t want this, but Xuan Louze is too wicked. He came back specifically to destroy us.”

The family head was exasperated. “As far as I know, you tried to kill him first, and this is his retaliation.”

Xuan Dongsi bowed his head, realizing he had underestimated Xuan Louze.

The family head was deeply disappointed in his descendants. “Can you all just be quiet for three days? After the succession ceremony, everything will be fine.”

Xuan Dongsi, quietly furious, responded, “Yes, Grandfather.” He vowed to himself that he would eliminate Xuan Louze.

The family head waved them away. “Think of a way to salvage this mess.”

“Yes, Grandfather.” Xuan Dongsi left the study and headed straight to the Fudong Courtyard. “Xuan Louze, come out!”

Xuan Louze emerged, and a sudden force sent Xuan Dongsi flying back. “What do you want?”

Ads by Pubfuture

Xuan Dongsi crashed into a tree, causing it to shake violently. “You, you…”

Xuan Louze, showing no remorse despite his words, said, “Sorry, I accidentally let my internal force slip.”

Xuan Dongsi, trembling with anger, spat out blood. “Xuan Louze, you’re not human!”

Xuan Louze smiled mockingly. “If I’m not human, but you can understand my words, that makes you something else entirely.”

Xuan Dongsi realized Xuan Louze was calling him inhuman. “You…”

At that moment, a maid ran over. “Fifth Young Master, the Fifth Master invites you to dine with him.”

“Alright, I’m coming.” Xuan Louze wondered what scheme the Fifth Master had in mind. With little to gain at the Xuan family mansion, he was curious to find out.

Following the maid, Xuan Louze arrived at the Fifth Master’s courtyard. In the dining room, the Fifth Master, a young beauty, and several children were already eating happily.

Xuan Louze glanced around. “You’ve already started eating and just now decided to call me?”

“We’re calling you to eat; you should be grateful,” said Xuan Loufei.

The Fifth Master didn’t know how to react to Xuan Louze. “Since you’re here, sit and eat.”

Xuan Louze sat down and said blandly, “You’ve already eaten. Have them prepare something fresh.”

The Fifth Master slammed his chopsticks on the table, causing the dishes to rattle. “Eat or don’t eat, your choice!”

Xuan Louze calmly placed his hand on the table, stood up, and left.

As he walked away, the table shattered, dishes and food scattering to the floor.

The Fifth Master, now filled with murderous intent, shouted, “Xuan Louze, stop right there!”

Xuan Louze flew away, vanishing in the blink of an eye, leaving the Fifth Master clutching his chest in anger.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

Xuan Loufei gritted her teeth. “Father, you must do something about Xuan Louze. He is too out of control!”

The Fifth Master, feeling helpless, said, “If you have any methods, use them. Teach your brother a lesson. He needs to know his place.”

Xuan Loufei’s face turned sinister. “Yes, Father.”

She chased after Xuan Louze, following him to the Fudong Courtyard. “Xuan Louze, come out! As the eldest sister, I must teach you some respect.”

Xuan Louze couldn’t be bothered with these people. He cast a spell, sealing the room to block any sound from entering.

Xuan Loufei shouted until she was hoarse but heard no response. She tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge. Frustrated and out of options, she yelled, “Xuan Louze, stay in there like a coward!”

As she was about to leave, Zeng Huo came out and slapped her thirty times, turning her once-pretty face into a swollen mess. “This is what you get for insulting the master!”

Xuan Louze, sensing this through his spiritual awareness, thought, “Well done.” Xuan Loufei’s face was now unrecognizable.

Zeng Huo then held up a mirror to show Xuan Loufei.

Seeing her reflection, she screamed, “A ghost!” and ran away.

Xuan Louze watched her flee in terror, unable to suppress a smile.

Just then, three maids entered the courtyard with food. “Fifth Young Master, the eldest son of the third branch ordered us to bring you this.”

“Come in,” came Xuan Louze’s voice from inside.

Zeng Huo opened the door, letting the maids in. “Put the food down and leave.”

“Yes,” the maids, having seen Xuan Loufei’s condition, dared not linger. They quickly set the table and fled in haste.

Zeng Huo couldn’t help but remark, “Look at that, those girls are terrified of you.”

“A bit of intimidation is good,” Xuan Louze replied, not fond of being bullied. He picked up his chopsticks and leisurely began eating.

“By the way, why did the eldest son of the third branch send me food?” Xuan Louze asked after eating for a while.

“In this mansion, the only bit of warmth Xuan Louze received was from the third branch’s eldest son. They had the best relationship, supposedly because Xuan Louze saved his life once,” Zeng Huo explained.

“I should meet this eldest son of the third branch. Sending me food at this time probably has some underlying meaning,” Xuan Louze said.n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om

“Let’s go and see,” Zeng Huo agreed.

The eldest son of the third branch was named Xuan Xibing, a young man in his twenties who had once been a promising talent. However, a fall from a horse had left him paralyzed from the waist down, confined to a wheelchair.

Xuan Xibing was in his room reading. It was already dark, and given his limited mobility, he spent his evenings in the study.

Suddenly, the door opened, and a handsome figure appeared at the entrance. “Cousin.”

Seeing Xuan Louze, Xuan Xibing’s expression turned excited. “You finally came to see me. I thought you wouldn’t come.”

Xuan Louze smiled faintly. “There were too many things happening during the day. I’m sorry.”

“The family has wronged you. Don’t hold it against them.” Xuan Xibing gestured for Xuan Louze to sit by his bed, but Xuan Louze chose a nearby chair instead.

Xuan Xibing’s eyes dimmed for a moment, but he quickly recovered. “How are things with that leader now?”

“He’s dead,” Xuan Louze replied honestly.

“Dead?” Xuan Xibing was visibly pleased but quickly reined in his emotions.

Xuan Louze was puzzled by his reaction.

Xuan Xibing quickly changed the subject. “How long are you planning to stay?”

“Until the succession ceremony is over,” Xuan Louze said, adding internally that he wasn’t sure the family would last until then. Despite the family’s supposed strength, it was full of bizarre individuals, leaving him exasperated.

“So soon?” Xuan Xibing’s mood clearly dropped.

“You know my situation in the family,” Xuan Louze said, feigning difficulty.

“Yes,” Xuan Xibing nodded.

“Cousin, you shouldn’t have sent me food today. Everyone in the family is against me now. Being kind to me will only cause you trouble,” Xuan Louze said, feeling no need for kindness from the Xuan family. He had come to see Xuan Xibing to return the favor of the meal.

“I knew you would come to see me if I sent food. I have something to tell you,” Xuan Xibing admitted.

“You want me to do something?” Xuan Louze sensed there was more to it.

“I want you to stop the succession ceremony,” Xuan Xibing said seriously.

Ads by Pubfuture

“Why?” Xuan Louze knew there was a story behind this.

“If the family leadership goes to Xuan Dongsheng, it means the Xuan family will align with the Xia Sang Kingdom,” Xuan Xibing said gravely.

“What do you mean?” Xuan Louze’s expression turned serious.

“Xuan Dongsheng has already allied with the third prince of the Xia Sang Kingdom, and grandfather intends to hand over the family leadership to him. Tonight, at midnight, someone from the Xia Sang Kingdom will come to the mansion and stay until the ceremony ends,” Xuan Xibing trusted Xuan Louze completely and told him everything.

“How do you know all this?” Xuan Louze studied Xuan Xibing, wondering how someone confined to his room knew so much.

“My father handles the family’s intelligence, and I help him occasionally,” Xuan Xibing admitted, hoping Xuan Louze would stop the ceremony.

“So that’s it. Why the urgency to align with the Xia Sang Kingdom?” Xuan Louze wondered.

“I don’t know either, and I’ve been trying to find out,” Xuan Xibing replied.

Aligning with the Xia Sang Kingdom puzzled Xuan Louze. “Keep investigating, cousin. I need to go.”

“Take care,” Xuan Xibing nodded.

Tonight, there were no stars or moon, only darkness illuminated by the faint lights around.

As Xuan Louze walked along the corridor, he pondered what Xuan Xibing had told him. The Xuan family indeed had secrets.

In the woodshed, Zeng Huo stood behind Fifth Master Xuan, his head slightly bowed. “Fifth Master, what do you want?”

Fifth Master Xuan did not turn around. “How did you handle the matter I assigned to you?”

“I was about to get the key, but Xuan Louze gave it to someone he liked. That person was of equal martial prowess to me, so I couldn’t get it. Later, that person was killed by Chu Qingzhi, and the key fell into Chu Qingzhi’s hands,” Zeng Huo explained.

“Isn’t Chu Qingzhi dead?” Fifth Master Xuan’s face changed, turning to Zeng Huo.

“She got the key before she died. Now, the item should be with Tang Jinghong,” Zeng Huo said calmly, almost revealing too much.

“Can you steal it from Tang Jinghong?” Fifth Master Xuan was anxious. How did it end up with Tang Jinghong?!

“Fifth Master, asking me to steal from Tang Jinghong is like sending me to my death. Sorry, I can’t do it.” Did he think Zeng Huo was foolish enough to accept such an impossible task?

“That’s a harsh statement. You’re highly skilled; what if you succeed? Think about it. If you bring me the item, I’ll give you the book ‘Shadow.’ We both win, isn’t that great?”

Nonsense, only you would win!

Zeng Huo felt he must have been out of his mind to agree to such unfair conditions in the past.

“Fifth Master, I’m sorry, but I can’t accept this. Besides, I’m planning to retire. Find someone else.” Zeng Huo firmly refused.

Fifth Master Xuan drew a long sword, pointing it at Zeng Huo’s neck. “Don’t forget who helped you back then.”

“Yes, you helped me, but do you remember how many things I’ve done for you over the years?” Zeng Huo was unafraid. “If you kill me, all your dirty secrets will be exposed!”

“You…” Fifth Master Xuan was furious.

“Fifth Master, let’s part ways amicably. Our cooperation ends here.” Zeng Huo gently pushed the sword aside and left the room.

“Stop!” Fifth Master Xuan called out.

“What else?” Zeng Huo was getting annoyed.

“If I tell Xuan Louze about our cooperation, do you think he will spare you?” Fifth Master Xuan threatened.

This matter should not be widely known. If it became public, obtaining the item would become even harder.

Chapter 1026: Wasting a Precious Resource Editor: Henyee Translations

“Say whatever you want.” Zeng Huo strode away. If Xuan Louze was the real Xuan Louze, he might still have some concerns. But now that it was Chu Qingzhi, he didn’t care anymore.

Fifth Master Xuan threw the sword in his hand to the ground with a forceful thud, furious to the point of losing his mind. Ever since Xuan Louze came back, nothing had gone right for him. This wretched star!

Meanwhile, Zeng Huo returned to Fu Dong Courtyard and directly told Xuan Louze everything. It was better to confess honestly than to be found out later, so he chose to come clean.

After listening to Zeng Huo, Xuan Louze took a key out of his bag. “This key, I got it from that leader.”

He played with it for a moment but didn’t find anything special about it. “What does this key open?”

“I don’t know either. Fifth Master Xuan just wanted me to get the key, but he didn’t say anything else.” He was also very curious about the secret, but how could Fifth Master Xuan tell him!

A key can still cause trouble? Xuan Louze waved at Zeng Huo, “You go back first. I’ll take a look.”

“Alright.” Zeng Huo left.

Xuan Louze held the key in his palm, probing it with his divine sense. “I didn’t expect this key to be made of black gold!”

Putting aside how rare black gold is, using it to make a key—isn’t that a waste of a precious resource?

Ads by Pubfuture

But this also indicated there must be a significant secret.

Xuan Louze put the key back in his bag and headed to where Fifth Master Xuan lived. His shadow flickered in the dark, moving so quickly it felt like an illusion.

After venting his anger in the woodshed, Fifth Master Xuan returned to his room to rest. To his surprise, there was already someone standing inside when he opened the door.

He instantly became alert. “Who are you?”

Xuan Louze waved his hand, and all the lamps in the room lit up, illuminating both of them.

Seeing it was Xuan Louze, Fifth Master Xuan’s anger flared. “Xuan Louze, how dare you sneak into my room!”

Xuan Louze looked at him with disdain. “Do you think I want to be here? If it weren’t to ask about the key, I wouldn’t bother coming to this doghouse!”

Fifth Master Xuan’s temple pulsed with anger, taking a long time to calm down. “You insolent child!”n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

“That’s old news. Nothing new.” Xuan Louze replied indifferently.

Fifth Master Xuan, nearly fainting with rage, thrust his sword at Xuan Louze. “You wretched brat!”

Xuan Louze slightly shifted, his palm hitting the sword, shattering it into pieces. The force numbed Fifth Master Xuan’s hand, making it fall limp.

“Don’t you want to know about the key?” Xuan Louze teased.

Fifth Master Xuan froze, then turned pale with shock. “You know about the key?”

Ads by Pubfuture

“Is it hard to know?” Xuan Louze said, “Zeng Huo is now my man. Wouldn’t he tell me?”

“That traitor!” Fifth Master Xuan cursed, not expecting to be sold out so quickly.

“Forget about him for now. Answer my question.” A light flashed at Xuan Louze’s fingertips. “What’s the deal with the key?”

Fifth Master Xuan had no choice but to explain, “The key is used to unlock the gate of the Nalan family.”

The Nalan family? Xuan Louze thought for a moment, then remembered. The ancient family was surnamed Nalan. “Do you know the Nalan family?”

“Our Xuan family originally had the surname Nalan.” Hatred filled Fifth Master Xuan’s eyes. “The Emperor of Daling deserves to die. His endless wars emptied the treasury, so he sent soldiers to rob our Nalan family. Little did he know, our Nalan family’s mastery of mechanisms was so powerful that we chose to perish together.”

This differed from what he had heard. “Wasn’t it an earthquake?”

Fifth Master Xuan sneered, “What earthquake? It was the Nalan family activating their mechanisms, causing the tremors.”

Xuan Louze, “…”

That’s indeed impressive, creating the effect of an earthquake by activating a self-destruct mechanism. “So, you know the location of the Nalan family?”

Fifth Master Xuan lamented, “No one knows where the Nalan family is. Three hundred years ago, after activating the mechanisms, our ancestors fled with some family members to Chen’an, later changing our surname. Everyone swore an oath never to speak of the Nalan family again.”

“Everyone kept their mouths shut, and no one revealed the location of the Nalan family even on their deathbeds.”

“The only clue is this key, which was taken out after locking the gate. To enter the Nalan family, you need this key. Without it, entering would reactivate the mechanisms, and you’d never get out.”

Xuan Louze thought, he didn’t expect to accidentally get the key to the Nalan family. Is this fate?

He looked at Fifth Master Xuan. “So, you wanted this key to open the Nalan family gate?”

Chapter 1027: Wasting a Precious Resource (2) Editor: Henyee Translations

Fifth Master Xuan said, “Yes, if we obtain the things from the Nalan family, our Xuan family wouldn’t need to depend on imperial power anymore and could gain freedom.”

This made Xuan Louze curious. If it was the First Emperor’s imperial seal, they would be chased by all the nations and it wouldn’t be related to freedom. Could there be something else in the Nalan family?

“Do you know where the Nalan family is?” Xuan Louze tested.

“I only know it’s near Liang City. I don’t know the exact location.” Fifth Master Xuan knew a lot, having been secretly investigating this matter.

“Liang City? A border town?” That was convenient. If it was in Liang City, he could meet up with Jinghong later.

“Yes.” Fifth Master Xuan gritted his teeth, not wanting to say these things but unable to stop himself. He wished he could sew his mouth shut.

“Do others in the family know about the Nalan family?” Xuan Louze realized that Fifth Master Xuan was quite valuable for information and knew a lot.

“I don’t know. The things I know were found out secretly, and I haven’t told anyone.” Fifth Master Xuan said, his heart pounding. Why couldn’t he control his mouth?

“Alright, that’s enough for today. We’ll talk later if there’s anything else.” Xuan Louze raised his hand and used a bit of spiritual power to knock Fifth Master Xuan out, then used a spell to suggest it was all a dream before leaving.

After leaving Fifth Master Xuan’s place, Xuan Louze went directly to the inn to investigate the whereabouts of his two disciples.

Ads by Pubfuture

The inn was currently empty, with only a few guards outside in the dark.

Xuan Louze searched around the inn but found no clues. “It seems I’ll have to ask someone.”

He went to the gatekeeper’s room. The guards changed frequently, but the gatekeeper remained, so he might know something.

A bell rang…

Xuan Louze entered the gatekeeper’s room to ask about Yuan Hongjun and Bao Linjiang.

The gatekeeper said they were taken by a group of imperial guards the day after they arrived. He didn’t know where they were taken.

Imperial guards? Xuan Louze frowned. Why were the imperial guards involved?

The trail had gone cold for now, so Xuan Louze left the inn.

Walking down the street, a figure emerged from the darkness ahead. “Xuan Louze, the Crown Prince requests your presence.”

The Crown Prince? Dong Dengyu? “Not interested.”

The man immediately drew his sword to block the way. “You must come with me… bang—”

Before he finished speaking, Xuan Louze kicked him away. He hated these dawdling people. Xuan Louze continued on his way.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

“What did you say?” Dong Dengyu was furious.

The subordinate, trembling, said, “Crown Prince, Xuan Louze doesn’t care about you at all. Before I could finish, he kicked me away.”

Dong Dengyu slapped the table. “Outrageous!”

The subordinate lowered his head, not daring to speak.

“A mere Xuan Louze dares to disregard this prince? Is he trying to overthrow the heavens?” Dong Dengyu had faced obstacles since returning to the country. Even the Empress no longer supported him, making him feel stifled every day.

“Go, call Fifth Master Xuan here. This prince wants to ask him how he raised his son!” Dong Dengyu needed someone to bear the brunt of his anger.

“Yes, Crown Prince.” The subordinate left quickly but returned soon after. “Crown Prince, Fifth Master Xuan is asleep, and we can’t wake him.”

Dong Dengyu nearly collapsed. No one took him seriously. “Get out! Get out now!”

The subordinate fled, knowing the Crown Prince was furious and would lash out if he stayed.

This news soon reached the Second Prince, Dong Denglin.

Dong Denglin laughed heartily. “My elder brother doesn’t realize he’s lost power and still dreams of a comeback. How laughable.”

An attendant asked, “Second Prince, what should we do now?”

Dong Denglin thought for a moment. “Although Xuan Louze’s actions at home are outrageous, he’s forced by circumstances. This prince thinks he can be forgiven. What do you think?”

The attendant agreed. “The Second Prince is right.”

“Prepare a generous gift and send an invitation. Invite the Fifth Young Master to Riverbank Cuisine for a drink. Say this prince only wants to drink with him, no other matters.” Dong Denglin ordered.

“Yes, Second Prince.” The attendant went to prepare immediately.

Early in the morning, Xuan Louze received Dong Denglin’s invitation. He couldn’t help but smile. An ally delivered to his door—why not accept?

Chapter 1028: Wasting a Precious Resource (3) Editor: Henyee Translations

“Zeng Huo, let’s go meet this Second Prince.”n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

“Yes.” Zeng Huo noticed the excited look on Xuan Louze’s face despite the Second Prince’s obvious agenda.

The two changed clothes and headed to Riverbank Cuisine.

As soon as they left, the Xuan family head was informed, “Family Head, our Xuan family is currently neutral. If Xuan Louze openly meets the Second Prince, we could be in a difficult position.”

“Meeting doesn’t mean anything.” The Xuan family head thought for a moment. “Send someone to keep an eye on them. If it’s just a meal, it doesn’t mean anything.”

“Yes, Family Head.”

At Riverbank Cuisine.

The shopkeeper personally greeted them at the door. “Fifth Young Master, welcome. Forgive me for not welcoming you sooner.”

“Take us to the Second Prince’s private room.” Zeng Huo stepped forward, speaking haughtily.

“Yes, this way, please.” The shopkeeper personally led them to Dong Denglin’s private room. “Second Prince, the Fifth Young Master is here.”

“Please come in,” Dong Denglin’s voice came from inside.

The shopkeeper opened the door, respectful and polite. “Fifth Young Master, please.”

Xuan Louze walked into the private room. As soon as he entered, Dong Denglin said, “I was worried the Fifth Young Master wouldn’t come. Please, sit.”

Xuan Louze sat down without any courtesy, acting superior to Dong Denglin. “Second Prince, what do you want from me?”

Suppressing his displeasure, Dong Denglin smiled faintly. “Nothing important. I just wanted to meet the Fifth Young Master. We’ve heard about your actions in the mansion and are deeply impressed.”

Xuan Louze inwardly laughed, keeping his expression unchanged. “You’re flattering me. If I didn’t resist, I’d be in a terrible situation now. It’s better to act freely.”

“The Fifth Young Master speaks wisely.” Dong Denglin poured wine. “Please, have a drink.”

“Sure. Meeting the Second Prince today makes me happy. I should have a drink.” Xuan Louze drank his wine directly.

Dong Denglin’s displeasure vanished due to Xuan Louze’s previous words. It seemed Xuan Louze was just being himself, not disrespecting him. Dong Denglin also drank his wine.

If Xuan Louze knew his thoughts, he would praise him for being good at making assumptions.

After some small talk, Xuan Louze got to the point. “I heard the little miracle doctor from Daling came to our Chenzang but has disappeared. Why?”

“Why do you want to know?” Dong Denglin asked cautiously.

“I’ve been feeling unwell and wanted to see him. It’s been a long time. I heard he can cure anything, so I wanted to try.” Xuan Louze observed Dong Denglin’s expression as he spoke.

“They disappeared. Didn’t you know?” Dong Denglin frowned.

“How could they just disappear?” Xuan Louze feigned surprise.

“I don’t know. One night, they mysteriously vanished.” Dong Denglin had been searching for them too, but found no trace.

Ads by Pubfuture

“What about the guards?” Xuan Louze thought there must be an insider.

“They were all executed by my father for failing to protect the doctors, putting our Chenzang in a dire situation. They deserved to die!” Dong Denglin said.

“Did you look for them?” Xuan Louze asked hopefully.

“I searched, but found nothing.” Dong Denglin was genuinely disappointed.

It seemed the depths of Zhongling City were more complex than he thought. Xuan Louze asked, “Is there a hidden force in Zhongling City?”

“Definitely, but I don’t associate with them. If my father found out, I wouldn’t be able to explain.” These things weren’t openly discussed.

Xuan Louze glanced at Dong Denglin, not believing a word he said, but it wasn’t his concern. “Do you know how to find these forces? If the Second Prince helps me find the miracle doctors and cure my illness, I can serve you.”

Dong Denglin was overjoyed but kept his expression neutral. “Since the Fifth Young Master said so, I will do my best.”

“Thank you.” Xuan Louze replied.

Dong Dengyu smashed everything on his table. “Outrageous! He refused to see me but went to see Dong Denglin. What does Xuan Louze mean? Does he also think I’ve lost power?”

His subordinates were silent, knowing better than to speak, but inwardly agreeing. Dong Dengyu knew his situation well enough, so why state it so plainly?

After venting, Dong Dengyu left with his guards, heading to Riverbank Cuisine.

He wanted to see what kind of wine his brother was drinking with Xuan Louze!

Dong Dengyu stormed into the private room, kicking the door open. “Haha, Brother, what are you eating without inviting me?”

Dong Denglin, still respectful, stood up and greeted him. “Greetings, Brother.”

Xuan Louze glanced at Dong Dengyu and continued eating.

Chapter 1029: First Miss is Gone Editor: Henyee Translations

“Don’t pretend. I know exactly what you’re thinking.” Dong Dengyu glared at Dong Denglin, wishing he could kill him with a sword.

Dong Denglin remained calm, “Have you eaten, Brother? If you don’t mind, join us for a meal.”

Xuan Louze watched the two, thinking that the Second Prince was much more composed than the First Prince. In the struggle for power, someone with the First Prince’s temperament would suffer greatly, no wonder he was losing.

The most laughable thing was that the First Prince didn’t even realize this, which was just exasperating.

Dong Dengyu, wanting to compete with Xuan Louze, naturally sat down. He seated himself next to Xuan Louze, “Is the food to your liking? If not, we can order something else.”

Xuan Louze put down his chopsticks, “Thank you for your concern, Your Highness. I’ve had enough. You two enjoy yourselves.”

Dong Dengyu’s rage flared up, “Xuan Louze, what do you mean by this? I’m lowering myself to please you, and you don’t appreciate it!”

Xuan Louze ignored him and waved to Dong Denglin before walking out.

“Stop right there!” Dong Dengyu hated being ignored the most. Xuan Louze’s actions were equivalent to rubbing his face in the dirt, and he couldn’t stand it.

Dealing with someone so unaware of their position was the worst. Xuan Louze simply flew away.

Dong Dengyu fumed, “Xuan Louze, you’ll pay for this!”

Ads by Pubfuture

Dong Denglin continued eating, uninterested in dealing with Dong Dengyu. With Chen’an essentially under his control, he had nothing to fear from Dong Dengyu. Keeping him around was just a distraction.

Dong Dengyu pointed at Dong Denglin, finally cooling down a bit. “Did Xuan Louze agree to your terms?”

Dong Denglin remained calm, “What exactly are you referring to, Brother?”

“Don’t play dumb. Just tell me.” Dong Dengyu was desperate, hating Dong Denglin’s evasiveness.

“Just as you suspected,” Dong Denglin replied nonchalantly.

Dong Dengyu slammed his hand on the table, “Damn it!”

“Brother, be gentle. If you break it, you’ll have to pay.” Dong Denglin looked at Dong Dengyu’s hand, kindly reminding him.

But his words felt like a slap in the face, as Dong Dengyu’s funds were nearly depleted. His face turned red with anger, and he stormed out, “Dong Denglin, I won’t let you get away with this!”

Dong Denglin continued eating as if nothing had happened, a mocking smile playing on his lips.

Meanwhile, as Xuan Louze returned home, he encountered Chen’an’s envoy from Xia Sang Kingdom—Xia Yuncheng.

Xuan Louze recognized Xia Yuncheng, but Xia Yuncheng did not recognize him, so there was no reaction from him.

Xuan Louze thought to himself that Xia Yuncheng had quickly started participating in politics. His first task was to recruit the Xuan family to Xia Sang Kingdom, a successful move that would bolster his reputation. This showed that Xia Yuncheng was more capable than he had imagined.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

Accompanying Xia Yuncheng was his senior brother, Li Yuanliang.

The head of the Xuan family personally welcomed the Xia Sang Kingdom envoy into the mansion, casting a warning glance at Xuan Louze.

Xuan Louze didn’t mind this time. He walked into the mansion with his arms crossed, thinking that if the family head knew Xia Yuncheng was his ally, his reaction would be quite amusing.

Ads by Pubfuture

Once inside, Xuan Louze noticed many unfamiliar faces. These people were likely here to witness the ceremony.

The Xuan family was indeed influential, with many prominent families attending the succession ceremony. No wonder Xia Sang Kingdom was eager to recruit them. He would do the same if he were in their position.

Back in the Fu Dong Courtyard, Zeng Huo brought tea. “A lot of people arrived today.”

“I noticed. What do you want to say?” Xuan Louze sipped his tea.

“If we killed them all, would the Xuan family become a target?” Zeng Huo casually suggested.

Xuan Louze paused. He was now sure the Xuan family harbored treacherous intentions, but he needed evidence. If he had proof, killing them would be a good option. “Your suggestion is interesting. I’ll consider it.”

Zeng Huo withdrew.

Xuan Louze drank his tea, waiting for nightfall.

A while later, Xuan Loufei came to the Fu Dong Courtyard. “Xuan Louze, I need to talk to you.”

Xuan Louze glanced at Xuan Loufei indifferently, not responding. He disliked her self-righteous attitude.

Surprisingly, Xuan Loufei didn’t get angry. “Xuan Dong’er is with our cousin in the palace. Go bring her back.”

“What if I don’t?” Xuan Louze knew there was a catch. Why take the risk? Though it wasn’t much of a risk for him.

“Cousin said if you go, she’ll give you Grandfather’s sword.” Xuan Loufei tried to entice him.

Ads by Pubfuture

Grandfather’s sword? Could it be something taken from the Nalan family? Xuan Louze was curious. “Fine, I’ll go, but you have to come with me.”

“I have to handle things at home. You can go alone. You’ve been there before.” Xuan Loufei didn’t want to go.

“If you don’t go, isn’t this a trap for me?” Xuan Louze deliberately provoked her.

Xuan Loufei felt guilty under his gaze. “It’s just fetching our cousin. How could it be a trap?”

“Then let’s go together.” Xuan Louze dragged Xuan Loufei along.

Unable to shake him off, Xuan Loufei had no choice but to follow.

As soon as they stepped out, a runaway carriage hurtled toward them, seemingly aimed at Xuan Louze. The timing of this accident was too coincidental.

Xuan Loufei was walking beside him. Just as she thought the carriage would hit Xuan Louze, he swapped their positions, ensuring Xuan Loufei faced the horses head-on.

Xuan Loufei’s eyes widened in terror. Pain exploded in her chest as she was knocked down, the carriage wheels running over her, spilling blood. It was horrifying.

Realizing what had happened, Xuan Loufei let out a blood-curdling scream, “Ah—”

Xuan Louze covered his ears. “You’re too loud. My ears hurt.”

Xuan Loufei stared in disbelief. Was this human? She was injured and should be calling for help, but he was complaining about her screaming?

The Xuan family guards had already run to get help.

Xuan Loufei’s father, Fifth Master Xuan, came out with a group. Seeing Xuan Louze, he wanted to scold him but was stopped by Xuan Louze’s expression. He opened his mouth but closed it again.

“Quickly, take miss inside.”

Carefully, they carried Xuan Loufei into the mansion. Her dignity as a noble lady was gone, and she might even end up disabled.

Xuan Louze followed them in, going to call Xuan Loulan. “Big Sister is injured. Second Sister, come with me to the palace to fetch Second Cousin?”

Xuan Loulan was fuming that Xuan Louze didn’t help Xuan Loufei. Hearing his request, her anger flared. “Can’t you go yourself?”

“I don’t dare to go.” Xuan Louze feigned a weak demeanor. “Just now, a carriage almost ran me over. Who knows what might happen if I take a few more steps? If Second Sister goes with me, I’ll be braver.”

“Stop talking!” Xuan Loulan was furious, thinking why it was Xuan Loufei who got hit instead of Xuan Louze. “Why didn’t you help Big Sister at the time?”

“I wanted to, but Big Sister pushed me away. I couldn’t help even if I tried.” Xuan Louze said, sounding aggrieved.

Xuan Loulan’s breathing became rapid with anger. “You, you—”

“Let’s go, Second Sister.” Xuan Louze grabbed Xuan Loulan’s hand and pulled her toward the gate.

Xuan Loulan couldn’t break free from Xuan Louze’s grip, so she was forced to follow him outside. Xuan Louze deliberately walked behind her. “Second Sister, can you walk faster? At this rate, it’ll take forever to reach the palace.”

Xuan Loulan knew that Xuan Loufei had set up many traps on the street, but she wasn’t involved and didn’t know which ones were traps. So, she walked slowly, observing as she went. “What’s the rush? If you’re in such a hurry, go by yourself.”

Xuan Louze chuckled inwardly. This was as obvious as hiding a tree in a forest. “Second Sister, is there something on this street?”

His words instantly pressured Xuan Loulan. She snapped, “What nonsense are you talking about? Just follow me.”

Xuan Louze was about to respond when a group of beggars rushed over, surrounding them. “Please, miss, spare some food? We haven’t eaten in a long time.”

Xuan Loulan was extremely disgusted. “Get lost. I have no food for you. Don’t crowd around me, or I’ll kill you!”

Xuan Louze’s fingers glowed faintly as he cast a subtle spell, changing their appearances. To everyone else, Xuan Loulan now looked like Xuan Louze.

The beggars were disguised assassins. After a while, one behind Xuan Loulan drew a dagger and stabbed her.

Xuan Loulan, skilled in martial arts, sensed the danger and parried with her sword.

However, the attacker was also skilled. When blocked, he switched hands and slashed Xuan Loulan’s side, drawing blood.

Xuan Louze leapt onto a rooftop, sitting to watch the fight.

Despite her injury, Xuan Loulan fought back, engaging the beggars in a street brawl.

The surrounding civilians fled, and the hidden guards didn’t intervene, just watching.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

Xuan Louze took out some candies from his sleeve, eating as he watched the show.

Xuan Loulan couldn’t understand why they were targeting her. Did her big sister want her dead? But they had no conflicts, so why kill her?

These thoughts quickly passed as she focused on the fight. The beggars’ attacks were deadly, and she couldn’t afford to be distracted.

After a fierce battle, Xuan Loulan defeated the attackers, who retreated into an alley and disappeared.

Wounded, Xuan Loulan knelt on one knee.

Xuan Louze flew down, helping Xuan Loulan back to the mansion. “So many accidents today. Now Second Sister is injured too.”

Xuan Loulan felt uneasy. Xuan Louze wasn’t stupid. Didn’t he realize these traps were set for him?

Yet, he showed no suspicion, which was odd.

Xuan Louze supported Xuan Loulan back home. After the fight and her injuries, she looked particularly disheveled, making everyone stare.

Fifth Master Xuan came out with a group to greet them. Seeing Xuan Loulan’s state, he wanted to scold Xuan Louze but hesitated. “What a disaster.”

Xuan Louze added, “Indeed, Second Sister fought so many and survived. Truly resilient!”

Everyone stifled their laughter.

Fifth Master Xuan fumed, “Get out of here and stop disturbing the treatment.”

Xuan Louze insisted, “No, Second Sister got hurt saving me. I need to make sure she’s okay, or I won’t feel at ease.”

“Your Second Sister would heal faster if you weren’t around.” Fifth Master Xuan shut the door in Xuan Louze’s face.

Xuan Louze smiled and went to find Xuan Lancheng. “Big Sister and Second Sister are injured. Third Brother, let’s go fetch Second Cousin from the palace.”

Xuan Lancheng, annoyed, said, “Get lost!”

“That pose is a bit unseemly, but if you insist, I’ll help you roll out.” Xuan Louze grabbed Xuan Lancheng’s wrist and kicked him out of the room. “Not quite round enough. Want to try rolling again?”

Xuan Lancheng, shocked and clutching his aching side, exclaimed, “What are you doing, Xuan Louze?”

“Just helping you roll, as you requested,” Xuan Louze said innocently.

Xuan Lancheng, speechless, “…”

“Get lost! I never want to see you again.” Xuan Lancheng roared.

Ads by Pubfuture

Xuan Louze approached him.

Xuan Lancheng scrambled away, “What are you doing?”

“Helping you roll again, as you seemed to want,” Xuan Louze said, his face pure.

Xuan Lancheng, feeling cursed, thought, “Why do I have such a foolish disaster of a brother?”

Xuan Louze glanced at the sky, “It’s getting late, Third Brother. We need to go, or we won’t make it to the palace.”

Xuan Lancheng didn’t want to go, “You go alone. I’m busy.”

“Weren’t you just idling?” Xuan Louze loudly protested, “Why is everyone unwilling to fetch our cousin? So heartless!”

“I’m not idling!” Xuan Lancheng was writing a letter, to whom only he knew.

Xuan Louze, tired of talking, grabbed Xuan Lancheng’s clothes and flew them out of the mansion, landing on the street in an instant. Now Xuan Lancheng had no choice but to go.

They walked towards the palace.

“Are you hot, Third Brother? You’re sweating a lot. If you’re hot, take off a layer.” Xuan Louze teased.

“Are you stupid?” Xuan Lancheng asked, exasperated.

“Yes, Uncle Wuye scolded me stupid,” Xuan Louze replied nonchalantly.

Xuan Lancheng, “…”

The clatter of hooves echoed as a group of horsemen charged from the street corner, surrounding them with drawn swords. The leader ordered, “Take them.”

Two dismounted, grabbing Xuan Lancheng.

Xuan Louze watched them take him, “Wonder where they’ll take him. Will they kill him?”

Realizing the danger, Xuan Lancheng shouted, “You’ve got the wrong person! I’m not Xuan Louze! I’m Xuan Lancheng! Let me go!”

Xuan Louze smiled at his cries, “No one will save you even if you scream. Just accept your fate.”
