It was an hour later, and my stomach still clenched at the thought of being given a worm. Was it something Blue ate that he thought I'd like, like with the salad? How could he eat that?

The giant alien refused to put me down, even as he drove to a different house. I barely noticed his arms, trying to keep from throwing up all over Blue from thoughts of my almost breakfast. It would have served him right!

Blue had kept me in his arms until the door to the house was opened. I was happy to see yellow, mostly because it wasn't a stranger, and another human would be around.

Robbie came running over, reaching out his hand to me. Blue hissed in fright as I pushed his arms away enough to slip out of his grip. My jump/slide down Blue's front was stopped by Robbie, who caught me and ran with me into the house.

When we settled on what I could only describe as a big dog bed, he turned to me, “What's wrong?”

I hugged my knees and sighed, “He tried to feed me a worm. And it was still alive!”

Robbie only giggled, “Your dad is clueless,” he said, laying on his back, “I'm sure mom will teach him.”

I shuddered at the thought of eating a worm, but my stomach was growling at me. It was empty, anything Blue had tried to give me, even another salad, I'd refused. I left the house hungry.

“Here,” Robbie handed out something that looked like a granola bar. It was a dense brick of grains, too big to be granola, but it smelled of something slightly sweet, maybe honey. “Yellow gives me these when she can't cook for me. Did you know I've only seen her eat maybe once every three days.”

“Really?” I took a testing bite. It wasn't the best, but it was better than a worm. “That's why Blue didn't eat this morning. I was afraid it was because I upset him.”

Robbie shook his head, “If he's like Yellow, he's freaking out because he freaked you out.”

"I don't know."

"Don't worry, Blue will be a good owner in time." Robbie said, patting my shoulder.

"That's just it," i said, slamming down the not granola bar. "What if I don't want an owner?" While I had been grateful at first to get away from that first monster, being with Blue had been a long list of things I didn't want to do. I did t want to be kept in a carrier. I didn't want to be put in a highchair, or made to drink from water bowls. And although Blue had gotten me clothes, I hated the colors. And he'd almost cooked me last night like those heaters!

"You can't be serious!?" Robbie said, sitting up. "Blue took you to the vet, got you clothes, and treats. He lo-"

I held a hand over Robbie's lips "Don't say love. Because even if it's true, he loves me like a pet. That's how Yellow sees you too."

Robbie pulled away, scowling, "Yellow does love me. She's my mommy. She rescued me from that horrible place." I'd never seen Robbie mad before.

"So, you're a rescue?" I asked, not adding the obvious; Robbie was a rescued pet to Yellow.

Robbie stood up, pointing a finger in my face, "You just don't know what it's like out there, how bad the beings can be."

"Exactly, so why should I trust Blue? Why do you trust Yellow?"

Robbie huffed, throwing his hands up.

Curious chittering came into the room, Yellow was there with a questioning look. Shed heard the loud raised voices. Robbie gave a faked laugh, and pounced into me, sending us back onto the bed.

Yellow coo'd and left.

I looked at Robbie with eyes squinted in question. "If she though we were fighting I'd have to go to my kennel. So, I made her think we're playing." He explained, standing slowly, making sure she didn't come back.

"See! You'd be kenneled like a dog."

Robbie let out a doglike growl. "So what if I was? Yellow is still better than I came from."

"And Blue's better than where I came from, but that doesn't mean I want to stay with him."

"You really think you're last owner and the place I came from is so rare?" He asked, "It's not. Blue and Yellow are rare. They do terrible things to us out there."

I laughed bitterly, "like what, I sat in my own filth for months!

"So did I!" Robbie yelled, "but I was taken out to be beat and injected with stuff." He turned his back, showing a back that was covered in scares. How hadn't I noticed before?
