(POV Gi-hun) In-ho and I were standing at Brussels Airport as several arrivals were announced: one machine coming from the United States and one from Seoul, both with people on board who came to see us. My heart was pounding, I really was about to see my daughter again. And my ex-wife. Ugh. But on the other machine there were some old acquaintances we decided to invite to our wedding. Since Mi-na's biological father turned out to be a public prosecutor, he had agreed to give us some special authorization and we really had a date settled where we would get married. It took a long time to convince In-ho but in the end he agreed to invite friends of ours: the surviving players from the Squid Games we had been close with. Dae-ho the ex-marine was coming, Cho Hyun-ju the trans-woman, the old lady Chang Geum-ja and her son Player 007 whose name I already forgot. But there was one more man coming, someone I had thought dead: Park Gyeong-seok, Player 246 had been part of our revolt and everyone had thought that he would've been shot when they surrendered - but it turned out that somehow he was saved and brought back from the island before the explosion. He would be coming with his daughter and also his girlfriend and I was curious to hear his story. "I'm stressed out", In-ho murmured and I could tell that he was nervous. "They don't know I was the Frontman, right? What if someone finds out? They'll surely despise me - or maybe stop the wedding." I put my arm around his shoulders to calm him down. "Baby, no one will find out. There's nobody who ever knew that you were Frontman. There's only you, me, Jun-ho and Mi-na, no one else and we'll take your secret to the grave if it's what you want." I softly kissed his forehead – something I loved to do since he was shorter than me and his forehead was at the same level as my mouth. "Maybe they'll be a little confused because your name is not Oh Young-il but I'm sure they'll get over it. Don't worry. Whatever happens I will be there."
In-ho nodded, his head resting on my shoulder, as the flight from the United Stated was announced.
(POV In-ho)
Ugh, I hated this woman. The little girl was sweet and it was adorable how happy she was to see her father again, but her mother, Gi-hun's ex-wife, was getting on my nerves from the beginning. There was never a moment of silence, she was always talking and so I decided to just stay in the background calmly while she was talking Gi-hun's ear off. It was the girl, Ga-yeong, who said something to me I found really touching: "I don't think it's weird that you're a boy, you know. I'm just happy my daddy is happy."
I smiled, relieved to hear something positive from my fiancé's family. "Thank you, Ga-yeong. I'm glad that you came here, your dad is happiest to finally see his daughter again." I wanted to say some more things to Gi-hun's daughter when suddenly the flight from Seoul was announced and just moments later I saw a group of asian people approaching us; people with familiar faces.
"Gi-hun! Young-il!" Dae-ho's yelling down the arrival's hall was unmistakable, he ran up to us, hugging us both at the same time. "You need to tell me everything how you managed to survive. We all thought you were dead. And now you're getting married? I mean I noticed a certain tension between the two of you but you really giving us a lovestory? And a wedding? I'm so curious to hear you guys' story!" I couldn't help but laugh about his enthusiasm.
"Hi,Dae-ho, it's good to see you. And my name is In-ho, not Young-il; please don't ask. I'm sorry for telling you a false name.", I instantly admitted to get it over with. Dae-ho was such a nice guy, he would understand. We also greeted Chang Geum-ja and her son 007 –damn, I still didn't remember his name – then Cho Hyun-ju and last I saw Player 246 approaching us. On his hand walked a little girl with a strawberry-hat and on the other hand a young woman, maximum 30 years old – and it hit me like a truck.
Fck no, you gotta be kidding me. I instantly recognized her face even though I had mainly seen her with a triangle-mask. I had been her employer – and this was Guard 011.
"Thank you for the invitation, I'm so glad the two of you made it out alive as well.", the father just said and I forced myself to a carefree smile. "We were very lucky indeed. My brother and my sister-in-law came to a last-minute-rescue.", I gave a vague explanation that wasn't even that far from the truth. I crossed my fingers that Guard 011 maybe had never seen my face and wouldn't recognize me – but her look piercing into my eyes was definitely saying otherwise. Player 246 didn't notice anything, he just casually answered: "My girlfriend here saved me, by chance she was a diver around the island and after I managed to escape she took me on her boat and back to the mainland."
Lie. But a good one, almost credible. Again I looked at Guard 011, we both aware who the other was and both aware that our secrets better stayed untold.
"The Frontman for sure had some insufficiency in his security concept.", Dae-ho said with a grin and I couldn't help rolling my eyes, remembering how my guards messed up to thwart the players' revolt. "He sure did.", I answered and I heard Gi-hun laugh a little.
"Relax, darling", he whispered into my ear, "everything is going to be alright." I nodded and took his hand – automatically I calmed down as our fingers intertwined.
We spent the afternoon all together in Brussels, eating ice cream and drinking beer – except Mi-na who came up with some lame excuse that she would prefer lemonade today – and chatting about our lives. Finally I caught Guard 011 alone for a moment. "Guard 011", I began but she raised her hand to stop me.
"Don't worry, I won't give you away as long as you don't give me away either. My boyfriend obviously knows but none of the others.", she said and I nodded slowly. "How did you do it? Player 246 was shot after the revolt, wasn't he?", I asked, curious how they managed to escape. She grinned a little, obviously proud of her success.
"I was the one who shot him but I deliberately missed him. I had met him before he participated in the games, I met his sick daughter, so I just had to save him. In the chaos nobody noticed that I was missing so I eliminated him by the chip in his neck and escaped with him underwater by diving. This was just 2 days before the whole island blew up somehow. Also I stole some frome the remaining cash the surviving players didn't win so he could afford the medical treatment for his daughter.", she explained and I nodded congratulatory. Not bad.
"You did the right thing and you made your decision far faster than I did. Let's say I maybe was involved with the explosion... but that's a long story. In the end just like you there was someone I couldn't let die." I looked at Gi-hun, his daughter sitting on his lap, him playing with her. Guard 011 even smiled: "Even if someone ever finds out, no one is going to believe this. Frontman marrying his worst enemy and guards and players coming to the wedding. I mean how likely is that?" She was right, it wasn't likely at all. In the end we all had been incredibly lucky. Just one day and I would be married to him, one single day until our wedding. After Min-jung's death I had never thought that I could feel this kind of love again – and here I was, as happy as I had ever been, about to marry the man I had always dreamed of.
